The annual prize show and sale of Terminal rams at Lancaster had a strong entry of rams forward met by a ring full of buyers with rams selling to a strong trade with buyers keen to purchase best sorts of rams.

Thanks goes to our pre-sale judges for their time and expertise and a special mention must go the vendors on a quality show of rams forward especially in the Suffolk shearling ram class. A thank you goes to our sale sponsors North West Suffolk Breeders Club, Road runners Tyres and Diane Pickles of Northern Nutrition. The overall Champion was awarded to the Beltex x Dutch Texel from the Wannop Family of Heaton Hall with the reserve Champion being awarded to the Texel from Ken Kelsall of Brown Brook.

Suffolk rams sold to a strong trade with buyers looking for good confirmation powerful rams selling to a top price of £850 from JH Tower & Son of Tunstall Hall with other shearling rams from the same home selling to £800 with all Suffolk shearlings forward average £463. Aged Suffolk rams from GI Richmond of Oakfield Farm sold to £450. A nice selection of Suffolk ram lambs forward sold to a top price of £480 from S & G Mellor of Windicott Farm.

Beltex and beltex cross rams were in strong demand. The champion ram a Beltex x Dutch Texel from the Wannop family of Heaton Hall selling to £820 to one of the Judges Thomas Aryton of Bambers Farm. A lot of lambs on the market in the local area over the last week and a lack of export trade caused a drop in trade this morning. Topping today’s sale at 213ppk from D & DW Prickett, Farleton House with 32kg Texels. Top price per head came from Alan Blair with a heavy Suffolk lamb at 54kg realising £84. Overall trade averaged 160ppk. Suffolks sold to 164ppk from WTC Farms. Once again vendors are reminded to draw lambs on finish rather than weight with buyers seeking meaty lambs.

Black and White calves sold to £120 from new vendor, TD & V Whitaker, Winmarleigh. Black and Whites averaged £49 with all in. More continental calves needed to meet demand. Stirks sold to £650 for Charollais Bullocks and £500 for Charollais Heifers. With a younger Angus bullock selling to £400 from RM & JL Whitton.

Lancaster Champion Sells to £2620

The largest entry to date of New Calved Cows and Heifers saw buyers in attendance from Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire and Shropshire.

Judging was conducted by Matthew Harper, Maryport, who had an exceptional show of cattle presented before him. The championship rosette was awarded to Lordsplain Steady Brandy from FG & MR Martin, bred from two generations of VG/EX and sired by Stantons Steady, she later sold for the sales top price of £2620.

Reserve Champion was awarded to the first prize cow Witherslack G Jordan Rose from Strickland Hill Farming, one week calved and giving 46lts, she reached a final bid of £2080.

A further five sold in excess of £2200 and 14 over £2000. An overall average of £1810 was achieved with prices in line with other nation sale centres.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36, with 2,694 head forward. This comprised of 1,753 lambs and, again, a large show of 941 cast sheep.

Commercial first cross Prime Lambs were 160-170p/kg, with smarter sorts 175-180p/kg, topping at 181.6p/kg for Texel x lambs from W A & G R Sedgley of Barbon. Overall, a plainer show of lambs were forward today with buyers very cautious of lean under-finished lambs.

The opening weekly sale of Calves and Stirks at J36 Rural Auction saw an entry of 33 calves forward mainly made up of Black and Whites. The handful of beef calves forward saw JM Barton & Son of Lupton Hall sell a 15 day old Limousin Heifer to £170 and a 14 day old Limousin bull to £165. Black and White bulls sold to £95 twice for good one month olds ML & SM Dobson of Espford Farm with younger rearing sorts around £40 mark and killing sorts a slightly sharper trade.

Calves and Stirks sale next on Thursday 21st August 2014 at 10.15am.
