The great annual Show and Sale of Mule Shearlings at J36 Rural Auction centre saw a strong line up of 10 pens out for show in front of the judges Richard and Jonathan Frankland of Rathmel. The first prize rosette for a pen of 10 Mule Shearlings was awarded to Philip and Denise Elliot of Penrith who also won the JT Nelson Memorial Shield. The Elliot family also won £500, kindly donated by the Kendal NEMSA branch, for winning the first prized pen of shearlings that had been purchased from the Kendal NEMSA Gimmer Lamb sale the previous year. The Kendal branch will continue to donate this prize each year. To be eligible for this prize buyers must pur- chase Gimmer Lambs at the sale held on Saturday 12 th September and then bring them back as Gimmer Shearlings and win the Mule Shearling class. NWA J36 Breeding Ewes & Gimmer Shearlings Saturday 22nd August

The opening sale of Breeding Sheep at NWA J36 commenced with a catalogued entry of 4181 ewes and shearlings which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Midlands and Wales.

The great annual Show and Sale of Mule Shearlings at J36 Rural Auction centre saw a strong line up of 10 pens out for show in front of the judges Richard and Jonathan Frankland of Rathmel. The first prize rosette for a pen of 10 Mule Shearlings was awarded to Philip and Denise Elliot of Penrith who also won the JT Nelson Memorial Shield. The Elliot family also won £500, kindly donated by the Kendal NEMSA branch, for winning the first prized pen of shearlings that had been purchased from the Kendal NEMSA Gimmer Lamb sale the previous year. The Kendal branch will continue to donate this prize each year. To be eligible for this prize buyers must pur-chase Gimmer Lambs at the sale held on Saturday 12th September and then bring them back as Gimmer Shearlings and win the Mule Shearling class.

The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster continues to get in excess of 300 cattle forward weekly. There was less quality cattle forward this week with more plainer and mixed bred cattle forward. There was more buyers in attendance with a couple of fresh faces around the ring but the edge was slightly off the trade today. The trade topped at £1,420 from GR & A Foy of Parkside Farm for a British Blue steer which was closely followed a trio of Limousin steers from Robin and Margaret Dodgson of Kilburn House selling to £1,400. A smart pair of 26 month old British Blue heifers from Messers Carruthers of Red Scar selling to £1,330.

The weekly sale of OTM and Cast Cows at Lancaster had an entry of 85 forward. The edge was slightly of the meaty and plain cows with steaking cows a better trade then seen over previous weeks. OTM heifers sold to a top of 151.5ppkfor a Friesian from ME Wannop and Sons of Heaton Hall with other OTM Friesian selling between 135ppk and 150ppk. Heavy weight beef cows sold into the late 120’s with better black and whites selling between 110ppk and 115ppk. the OTM cattle sold to an overall average of 103ppk.

A couple of regular buyers missing ring side led to a slightly easier trade than seen in previous weeks, however, best calves sold to full value with Blue Bulls to £490 for an 8week old from S & IA Robinson, Longber, to average £380. Blue heifers to £305 from Cote Farm Partnership. Native bred calves to £315 for an Angus from TM Townley, Knowsley. Stronger Black and Whites sold well, with John & Edward Fox top of the tree at £165. Nice rearing calves £60-£82 with younger sorts a toucher cheaper. Stirks sold to a top of £560 from A Shepherd with a 6month Blue Bull. A run of Angus from Kelsall & Wood sold to £500 for Bulls and £445 for Heifers.

A small entry of only 628 prime lambs forward with many vendors purchasing breeding sheep over the previous week. Heavy weight lambs sold to £85 from CR Eastwood of Bentham and 51kg lambs from R & B Parker of Killington selling £82.50. Heavy lambs in strong demand and eagerly bid for at Lancaster more could have easily been sold to the vendor’s advantage. Better types of lambs sold to 183ppk from D & D Prickett of Farleton House. More hill bred lambs now coming onto the market with mules ranging between 130ppk and 146ppk averaging 135ppk. A good entry of 193 Cast Sheep this morning at Lancaster’s weekly prime stock sale. Buyers keenly bidding on all classes of sheep, however they were reluctant to pay over the odds for over fat ewes. Trade topped at £125 for a Texel tup from A Birchall, Dophinholme. Ewes sold to a top of £89 for a Suffolk from J Burr. Mules sold to £67 form FW Rhodes & Son, Barrow Greaves with others to £65 again from J Burr. Hill sheep forward in bigger numbers, with swales selling to £43 from Raymond and Paul Ayrton, Yates Farm. Cheviots from Ian & Simon Gorst to £44. Overall average of £49.63 for all sheep forward.

Just a single entry of Dairy Cattle this morning, from Darren Dodgson of Cracalt Farm. A sweet 3 week calved Heifer giving just short of 35 litres sold to full value, realising £1450. More Dairy Cattle required to meet buyers demand at J36.

The weekly sale of Store Lambs saw increased interest from buyers with several returning faces ringside. Lambs sold to £53, with others generally £44 - £49. Long keep lambs experienced the keenest demand at £40 - £43.50.

Best meated and export type Prime Lambs experienced the keenest bidding, with buyers showing extreme caution to under finished lambs, regardless of weight. Please draw lambs carefully to ensure that maximum value is achieved.

Heavy lambs sold to £74 for Texel X from P & TL Edmondson, with other heavies regularly £67-£70. Standard lambs achieving £10-£15 over weight depending on breed. Best grading lamb peaked at 171p/kg with others 158-168p/kg. Commercial lambs were 135-145p/kg.

An overall market average of 139p/kg was achieved for all lambs sold.
