Long keeping and good grazing Cattle were the dearest trade today, selling to a good ringside of buyers. Stronger cattle were still a nice trade, considering the Prime Cattle prices. Top price was £1210 for a Limousin Bullock from AE Atkinson & Son, Stubb Farm bought by David Barker. NWA Two Day Grass Day J36 Rural Auction Centre Today we had a catalogue entry of 824 Store Cattle at our Annual Grass Show and Sale. Long keeping and good grazing Cattle were the dearest trade today, selling to a good ringside of buyers. Stronger cattle were still a nice trade, considering the Prime Cattle prices. Top price was £1210 for a Limousin Bullock from AE Atkinson & Son, Stubb Farm bought by David Barker.

The Bank Holiday May sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot had a good entry and a good trade for the sheep forward. Correct mule ewes with strong lambs regularly around the fifty pound a life mark with broken mouthed ewes selling slightly less.

The April sale of Stirks saw an entry of 70 forward to a full ringside of buyers and selling to a 100% clearance. Smartest strong stirks sold in excess of £600, topping at £670 for a nice Limousin Bull from MJ & LC Lund, Quernmore. Blues sold to £660 for Bulls from the same home

and bullocks to £660 from JR & J Gorst & Sons, Quernmore. Heifers sold to £590 for Blues again from John & Dick Gorst. A trio of younger

Blue bulls sold to £475 from Anthony & Lindsey Gardner, Quernmore. Black and White stirks not quite as fast, selling to a top of £355 for a

pair from JW & C Metcalfe, Quernmore at 8months and 4month olds to £240 from Kelsall and Wood.

British blue weaned bull calves sold to £435 from C & AJ Woodhouse of Millom with British Blue heifers selling to £360 from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall. A consignment of one month old British Blue bulls from WR Clarke & Partners of Cinder Barrow sold between £300 and £325, with heifers from the same home selling to £280. A strong Stirk trade especially, in comparison with the store cattle trade, with plenty of vendors around the ring, looking to purchase hard grazing stirks, fit to turn out to graze. Plenty pens of bullocks selling in the late five hundreds, topping at £615 from PW Clarke of Woodside Farm. Heifers sold to £550 from R Gibson & Son of Singleton Park. Black and White trade was hard work, reflecting in the current store cattle trade for black and whites.

There was a strong entry of Sheep, Cattle, Goats and Donkeys. A fantastic crowd of people filled the Ring with two consignments of Valais Black Nose Sheep creating a lot of interest. A Valais Black Nose Ram Lamb and its surrogate mother hit the headlines, selling to a top price of £2,000 from Tim Dunne of Appleby. A Ryeland x Jacob with twin lambs sold to £170 from Susan Atkinson of Scorton. Goats met a strong demand selling to a top price of £130 for a goat with kids at foot from C Wright of Carnforth. Also In-kid Saanen nanny goats selling to £115 from Fred Carr of Arkholme. An entry of Rare Breed Cattle, mainly consisting of of Yearling and Bulling Heifers, saw Pedigree Galloway bulling heifers from B & D Willison of Cinderbarrow sell to £700. The Saturday sale of Poultry at J36 saw a nice entry forward, with all birds well bid for. Large-fowl Chickens were in the most demand, topping at £75 for 4 Silkies from CF Cooke. Chicks sold well, topping at £72 for 6 White Silkies at only 6 weeks old. In the dead stock section, an Automatic Incubator from Ted Longton, Gressingham sold well at £75.

Young sheep saw Mule Gimmer shearlings with twin lambs sell to £175 from G & KM Atkinson of Green Farm and again from Matthew Atkinson of Low Underbrow. Continental shearlings with twins to £182, with shearlings sucking smart single lambs selling to £152 all from G & KM Atkinson of Green Farm. The first consignment of hoggs today saw continental hoggs with single Texel lambs achieve £168. A large number of splitting families forward with old Texel ewes and twins selling to £155 from TJ Beaty with hill bred Cheviot ewes selling to £145 from W & W Patterson of Appleby. Ewes with strong single lambs where easily sold today and created plenty of interest. An entry of just shy of 600 Prime Hoggs forward saw better continentals selling in the region of 190ppk, with lightweight continental hoggs selling over 200ppk from MW & MR Black of Scroggs Farm. Well fleshed hoggs continue to be easily sold with more needed to meet the demand from a busy ring of buyers. Many end of season hoggs forward today, which were eagerly bid for and sold well. Heavy weight hoggs sold to £102 from AR & C Fawcett of Silverhow Farm, with plenty of well fleshed hoggs 50kg plus selling in the nineties. Hoggs weighing between 39kg - 45kg, averaged 172ppk with a market average 165ppk. There was more interest in Spring Lambs today as more companies look for them. A market average of 215ppk. Nicer types of lambs were selling between 230ppk and 250ppk topping at 250ppk or £110 from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite. Suffolk or Texel lambs out of mules selling either side of 210ppk.
