Sheep with Lambs top at £200 at J36 A strong entry of over 200 families of sheep with lambs at foot forward today. The trade topped at £200 for Mule Shearlings with lambs from
G & KM Atkinson of Green Farm with other pens from the same good home selling to £195. A flock dispersal from Robert and William Case of Dalton-in-Furness created plenty of interest selling to £148 for Mule shearlings and 1 crops with Suffolk twin lambs. A consignment of Continental ewes with Beltex lambs from Alistair and Bradley Thompson of Poppy Farm saw singles sell to £135 and £132.

The trade topped at 226ppk from Andy Wilson of Burrow Heights with Charollais lambs, trade was topped by WJ & L Barker of Brown Edge selling Charolais lambs to £98.
Well fleshed and in specification Prime Hoggs good to sell with a market average of 170ppk. Trade topped at £88 from R Collinge & Son of The Dingle for a pen of continental hoggs with plenty of pens of continental hoggs selling either side of £80. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £79.50 from J & H Davis of Weavers Farm. ewes sold to £64 for a pen of 8 again from FK & F Woodhouse. Overall average of £72 for all sheep forward this morning.

Following on from last week’s big entry of Ewes and Lambs for the spring show a smaller entry this morning but the trade remains very
similar. An entry of entirely old ewes and lambs sold to a top of £150 from James Burr for firstly a pen of Mule ewes with Twins Texel lambs
and then continental ewes with twins sold to £150.
Aged continental ewes with single lambs sold to
£112 from the same home.

Friday 22nd April The weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had a nice entry put before a full complement of buyers. Well fleshed, short keep cattle sold in line with the current dead weight prices. Trade topped at £1240 twice, firstly for a pen of 6 Charolais Bullocks from GR Bargh & Co and sec-ondly for 3 Charolais Bullocks from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Grazing and yearling cattle were good to sell and look dear in compari-son to bigger sorts. A bigger show of Cast Cows this morning with 84 forward. Top pence per kilo went to DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland with a Limousin Bullock at 169.5ppk. Top gross went to S Kellet & Sons, Pilling with a Friesian steer at £1060. Holstein cows sold to 119.5ppk from the same home, whilst heifers sold to 139.5ppk from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Blue calves sold to a top of £340 and £320 for Bulls from Philip Halhead, Cockerham. Native bred calves to £315 for a smart Angus Bull from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Black and White calves sold to a fast trade, topping at £205 at 1m 20days. Best Black and White calves in advance of £120, smaller sorts £50-£80 with younger calves above £30, to average £85. Strong, good conformation beef calves easily selling in excess of £300, topping at £375 B Mallinson & Son of Raven Lodge for a British Blue bull and others from the same home selling to £340. Limousn heifers from the same good home sold to £320. Black and whites, dependant on type, topping at £80 from K E Robinson of Kiln Hall.

Taking the top price was a 141kg Hog, from A Fox, realising £138, closely followed by a smart Gilt from PK & R Woof, Stainton at £135. Top price per kilo came from the same home with a 71kg Gilt at 151ppk or £110 per head. Best pigs £108-£115 for Gilts and Hogs. Boars were slightly harder to place. Please note change of date for the monthly sale of Store, Breeding & Prime pigs in May to Tuesday 17th.
The largest entry this season of Prime Lambs with over 100 forward. Lambs topped at 228ppk or £105 from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite with purer types of lambs selling in excess of 220ppk. The Majority of pens easily selling in excess of 200ppk per kilogram with a market average of 207ppk.
A larger entry of Prime Hoggs forward this week with just shy of 700 being sold. Well fleshed handy weight Continental hoggs regularly sold either side of 200ppk topping at 206ppk from George Harryman of Hawkshead. Heavy weight Continental hoggs sold to £94.50 from JE Stables & Sons of Grange-over-Sands with pens of heavy hoggs regularly mid to late eighties. Hill hoggs saw well finished Herdwick hoggs top at £81 from D Mallett of Ambleside with Cheviot hoggs selling to £77.50 from J Woodburn & Partners of Ulverston. A market average 162ppk. Over 350 Cast Sheep sold to a full contingent of buyers at J36 today. Again, trade remained strong for the best heavy ewes, topping at £100 for a Dorset Tup from MA Grant, Sedbergh. Texels sold to £99 for a trio from E Dodgson, Spital Farm. Mules to £82 from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton. Biggest Mules in excess of £75. Swales to £74 for a pair of tups from WI & A Atkinson, Bleasdale and Swale ewes to £65 from H Pumphrey Armitage, Milnthorpe.

On Saturday 23rd April UK Cycling Events held their first ‘Bowland Bowbearer’
Sportive at J36
Over 150 Cyclists set off from J36 on three routes with the shortest being 35 miles and the longest
being 103 miles!
Our own Gillian Ellis completed the 35 mile route in a fantastic time of 2 hours 59 Minutes
