The sales top price of £1095 was achieved by M Benson, Horrace Farm selling a 10 month old Limx Bullock followed by M&D Hatton with a BRB X heifer at £1010 and GC & GW Taylor selling a Lim x Bullock at £1005. Buyers keen to secure replacement stock with grouped cattle selling to keen interest with CP Bateman selling a pen of 5 Charx Bullocks at £855 and a pen of 12 Charx £840 Messrs Proctor & Wareing. Native breeds saw AAx bullocks achieve £900 from Fishwick Farms, Silverdale who also sold Hereford x £780 and Beef Short- horn also at £780. Saler bullocks sold to £705. NWA J36 Show & Sale of

Suckled Calves Thursday 1st October

The Annual Show and Sale of Suckled calves saw a catalogued entry of over 400 attract buyers from throughout the northern counties with new and returning customers in attendance. The judging was conducted by Mr C Jones, Cheshire who awarded the championship rosette to a 6 month old British Blue Bullock from NA & J Temple, Ulpha which later sold for £915. The sales top price of £1095 was achieved by M Benson, Horrace Farm selling a 10 month old Limx Bullock followed by M&D Hatton with a BRB X heifer at £1010 and GC & GW Taylor selling a Lim x Bullock at £1005. Buyers keen to secure replacement stock with grouped cattle selling to keen interest with CP Bateman selling a pen of 5 Charx Bullocks at £855 and a pen of 12 Charx £840 Messrs Proctor & Wareing.

Native breeds saw AAx bullocks achieve £900 from Fishwick Farms, Silverdale who also sold Hereford x £780 and Beef Short-horn also at £780. Saler bullocks sold to £705.

Saturday 3rd OctoberSaturday 3rd OctoberSaturday 3rd OctoberSaturday 3rd October The annual hill fair sale of all classes of breeding sheep and rams plus store lambs continues to grow each year with an entry of over 1,200 forward this year. The pre-sale show of 10 Mule Gimmer Lambs was judged by Nigel Barker, Dalton Old Hall. He awarded the first place rosette to B & SE Carter, Cragg End which later went on to top the gimmer lamb section of the sale, realising £92. Also at this price was a pen of 10 Mules from FK & F Woodhouse, Fell End. A 100% clearance was achieved on the gimmer lambs, with 305 sold.

The breeding ewes and shearlings consisted mainly of mules, a sticky trade was endured as seen throughout the season. Mule shearlings sold to £120 and better types of pens selling regularly between £115 and £120. Two Texel shearlings from James Sanderson, Halton realised £150 & £130, both going home with Peter Anderton of Scorton. Mule ewes sold to a top of £86, for a pen of 10 2-3crops from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland. Tups were met by a selective trade, selling to a top of £300 for Beltex Shearlings from ME & J Swarbrick, Stalmine and £350 for Texel Ram lambs from M Berry, also of Stalmine. Suffolk lambs sold to £280 from George Riley. Leicester’s sold to £160 for the first prize in the pre-show class, a ram lamb from Bryan Carter. Thanks to our judge Tom Parker.

Store lambs at the Lancaster Hill Fair Day sale were met by a roaring trade, with buyers for all classes. Trade topped at £56.50 for a pen of 14 big Texels from J Ainsworth, Carnforth. Mules sold to £50 from A & L Huddleston, Wray. Suffolks from DM Bargh sold to £52. The annual consignment from Jim, Rachel and James Curwen saw Cheviots sell to £44.50, to average £41.70 for 114 forward. Swales from the same home topped at £40 with others at £39 and £38.50 to average £32.87 for all 280 forward.

Best quality beef calves still getting away nicely with middle types slightly harder to sell but still eagerly bid for and in keeping with other local centres. Black and whites in strong demand once again at J36 and eagerly bid for by many active buyers. The calf trade from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall selling British Blue heifer calves with cow making potential to £420 and British Blue bull calves to £410 with other good quality beef calves still selling £370 plus. Plenty of other beef bull and heifer calves selling around the £300 mark with all British blue bulls averaging £323. Plenty of strong well grown black and whites forward easily selling £100 plus topping at £155 from RJ Holden of Syke House Farm with young rearers regularly selling between £40 and £70. A consignment of Montbeliarde calves from JJ & MA Park of Low Sizergh selling to a top of £165 and easily selling £150 plus.

A strong entry of Stirks this week sold to their value with a varied types and quality forward. The trade was topped by M Gibson of Mouse Syke for a 6 month old Angus Steer with British Blue heifers selling to a top of £540 from the same home.

Over 100 Store Cattle saw a top price of £1235 for a Charx Bullock from P&SA Edmondson with £1195 achieved for a trio of Limx Bullocks from JM Case & Son with other stronger bullocks £1135, £1095. Heifers sold to £1035 For a Limx From Messers Pearson & Jackson with others regularly £950 - £1000. Younger stores keenly competed for with a run of Herefordx steers and heifers from G Atkinson & Son £600-£700 peaking at £785.

An improved entry of 97 Cast/OTM Cattle were forward selling to a market average of 108p/kg. Well fleshed cows a stronger trade whilst leaner cows perhaps a little harder to place. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 134p/kg from Jenkin Crag Farm, with well fleshed types 110 -120p/kg and parlour type cows 80-90p/kg. Best beef cows 135-155p/kg topping at 181p/kg from A&E Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. OTM clean cattle peaked at 184p/kg for a BRBx from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.

Three Dairy Cattle forward today at J36, topping at £1400 for a fresh calved heifer giving 35 litres from JH Woof & Son, selling to Richard and Johnny Hoggarth. A second calver from the same home realised £1200.

A very disappointing number of Prime Lambs forward today, many more could have been sold as trade was better than expected and vendors leaving pleased with their trade. More needed next week at Lancaster to fulfil the buyers’ requirements. Once again lambs of all sizes that were well fleshed were good to sell and eagerly bid for with lambs lacking finished penalized. A market average of 143ppk with SQQ averaging 144ppk. A lot of heavy lambs in the market with standard weights between 40kg and 42kg short of requirements. Lambs twice sold to a top of £74.50 with heavy weight lambs from J & R Waller of Hallbeck and C & B Lowther of Lower Castle o’Trim. Heavy weight lambs in strong demand and good to sell with plenty of pens between 47kg and 50kg selling £20 above their weight. Better types of lambs continue to sell in excess of 160ppk topping at 168ppk from D & DW Prickett of Farleton House. Less mules in the market today but sold to £61 for 43kg from T Ayrton & Son of Yates Farm.

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw a rise in trade selling to an overall market average of 148.5p/kg. A top price of 172p per kilo was achieved for light weight Texel lambs from EC & JG Potter with others 155-164p/kg. Standard lambs peaked at 171p/kg from SP Pease, Kirkby Lonsdale with well fleshed lambs 150-165p/kg. Heavy weights to 163p/kg and generally 148-155p/kg. A top price of £84.50 was achieved for heavy lambs and standards to £72. Mules sold to £60.50 (144p/kg). Ten buyers ringside throughout the sale competing for all types ranging from 34kgs – 61kgs.

The Cast Ewe numbers continue to come forward at J36 with an entry of 652 forward this week, buyers commented on the strong trade for the sheep forward. Cast tups sold to a top of £100 from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite. Pure Texel ewes sold to £96 from RG Blackburn of Chapel House with Leicester ewes selling to £85 from RS & BA Harker of Overthwaite. Three quarter bred continental ewes generally easily selling £80 plus with plenty of continental ewes selling in excess of £70 with all continental ewes forward averaging £65. Not as many pens of strong Mule ewes forward as seen over previous weeks, with stronger Mules today selling over £60 topping at £63. Swaledale ewes sold into the fifties for strongest types with plenty of big ewes easily selling between £38 and £42.
