Summer Dairy Show Thursday 9th June

The Summer Show and Sale of Cows and Heifers at J36, had an entry of 12 put before the judge, Mr J Powley of Penrith. Taking first place in the heifer class from J & J A Burrow, Thursgill, 7days calved and giving 5.5gal, she later realised £1,380 selling to the judge. First prize cow came from R & J Dodgson, Cracalt Farm, she realised £1,350, selling to Messrs Batty of Quernmore. A run of heifers from new vendor, AO & TO Laycock, Lawns Farm, sold to a top price of £1,150 for a sweet pedigree heifer, a month calved, giving 25litres.

An overall market average of just shy of £1,000, due to a mixed entry forward, resulting in a buyer’s trade.

Dairy sales are fortnightly at J36 with the next sale on Thursday 23rd July.

A flying trade throughout for Store Cattle at this morning’s sale, with all vendors leaving with broad grins. Topping the sale was JA & LR Wilson, Millom with a single Limousin Bullock at £1460. Followed by a pen of 4 Lim bullocks at 22months from MJ Whitworth, realising £1430. Native bred bullocks topped at £1380 for a pair of Angus from J & H Davis, Cabus, also at the same price was R Escolme, Bay Horse, again with an Angus Bullock. Herefords to £1300 for a pair from Sarah Jackson, Overton. Friesians sold to £1090 for a pen of 4 from F Barton & Son, Mellor Brook

Heifers sold to £1190 for a Montbelliarde from WR & CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. A trio of Limousin Heifers from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland, realised £1180. Blues to the same money from AG & GM Rowlinson, Killington. Native breds to £1120, for a trio of Angus from JH Woof & Son, Oxenholme. Herefords from the same home to £1100.

Younger grazing cattle were equally as good to sell, with Charolais Bullocks at 11months realising £960 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Blues at 11-12months from T & J Parkinson, Kirkham selling to £800. Overall averages of £1106 for Bullocks and £1001 for Heifers for all forward.

A strong entry of 81 Cast Cows forward this morning, with a good trade for all forward. Trade topped at 209.5ppk for a Cast Limousin Heifer from Nether Hall Farms. Top price per head came from F & IM Potter, Grayrigg, with a cast Charolais Bullock totalling £1178. Beef cows topped at 174.5ppk from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton. Black and White heifers sold to a top of 149.5ppk from DJ & KA Gardner, Quernmore. Black and White Cows sold to a top of 139.5ppk, on four different occasions, from P & M Crackles, Burrow (twice), JJ Pennington & Son, Hurst Green and SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Dairy cows sold to a good trade with only the very plain sorts a fraction cheaper on the week. Black and White Cows averaged 112ppk, with an overall sale average for all OTMs forward of 127ppk.

A nice entry of 54 Calves and Stirks this morning were met by a ringside of active buyers. Topping the calf trade was Steven Birkett, Stubb Hall with a 9week old Blue Bull realising £475. Blue Heifers sold to a top of £335 at only 4weeks. Black and white calves topped at £302 at 12weeks from Ken Kelsall, Chipping. Best black and whites a fraction cheaper than previous weeks, selling between £120-£140, again from T &CM Kelsall, Wallbank Farms Ltd and WN & D Smith & Sons. A shortage of younger rearing calves forward, selling between £40-£60. A fast trade for all stirks, saw black and whites from Stuart Close sell to £410 at 8months. Beef bred stirks to £645 for 6month blue bulls and £540 for 6month blue heifers from A Shepherd, Pilling. Limousin Bullocks at 5months to £490 from A Coates, Calder Vale.

All buyers in attendance at Lancaster for Prime Lambs, which sold to an average of 10 ppk less than previous week with a market average of 152ppk. All buyers keenly bidding on lambs but only to a price. Better types of lambs and light lambs sold in excess of 170ppk topping at 185ppk from D & DW Prickett of Farleton House with a pen of light weight lambs. Heavy types of lambs around 50kg sold to a top of £80.50 from Mrs E Hartley of Hazel Brae. Texel cross lambs weighing in the early forties generally selling into the mid-sixties.

The biggest show of Cast Ewes at Lancaster for some time with 296 forward. A full complement of buyers ensured all sheep sold to their full potential. Trade topped at £125 for a big Texel Tup from AT Alcock, Inskip. Ewes topped at £117 for a trio from James Sanderson, Halton. Mules sold to £77/head from A & E Clarkson, Cock Hall and MJ Ayrton, Bambers Farm. A run of hill sheep saw Swales sell to £51 from S Park, Aughton and Cheviots to £87 from KM & KJ Curwen, Marshaw. Leaner ewes were the dearest trade of the day, with buyers still cautious of over fat sheep. Overall average of £66/head for all forward.

Seven Prime Beef forward sold to a trade in keeping with national average with prime cattle prices lifting. Dairy bred British blue bulls from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Eagland Hill sold to 194.5ppk with British blue bulls from the same home topping at £1197.64. Native bred bulls saw Hereford bulls sell to 164.5ppk for a Hereford from P & A Bell of Village Farm.

Store Cattle continue to sell to a buoyant trade at NWA J36, with buyers ringside for all types and eager to bid. Steers reached £1,135 for Lim x steers from D W Clark, Challon Hall, with a run of yearlings from N Cooper & Sons peaking at £1,060, with others £1055. Young sucklers sold to £955 for 8 mo Char x steers from N J Strickland & Son, with BA x £815 from R Keith. Heifers reached £1,030 for best suckler sorts from N Cooper & Sons, with others £1,010 from J T & J Kelsall. A trio of young Lim x heifers from J A Airey sold at £835 with Char x £795 from J A & S M Allen. An entry of young bulls sold to £880 for 6-8 mo Lim x from D Mallet.

The Beef Breeding cattle saw keen bidding peak at £1,550 for a pure Lim cow with bull calf from T, L, B & J Knowles and others £1,520 from J H Barker, Stribers.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had a very selective trade today. Best types of beef calves still a strong trade, regularly selling in excess of £400. Black and white bull calves very good to sell, especially decent rearing types, but young beef calves and plainer types harder to place. Those types were definitely a buyers market today.

Selling to the top of £470 was a good, April born, British blue bull from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons of Sowerby Lodge, with heifers from the same home selling to £435. J W & T E Sharpe of Flodder Hall’s consignment of Calves sold to £430 for a British Blue bull. Rearing black and whites sold to a top of £185 from H J Robinson & Son of Elm Tree Farm, with other, well grown rearers, selling over £150. Black and whites sold to an average of £90.25.

The trade for stirks was strong for what was forward, with all eagerly bid for, with five month old British blue steers selling to £500 and £490 twice from R J & K R Wilkinson of High Foulshaw Farm.

Once again, a full ringside of buyers competed strongly for a good show of meated Cast Cows, which went on to average 127.55p/kg. Black and white cows topped at 154.5p/kg from H W Robinson & Son of Gatebeck, selling to L Fell of Settle. Plenty of cows were selling between 130 and 140p/kg. An exceptional show of Continental cows met a fierce trade, with the majority selling between 140-160p/kg, topping at 171.5p/kg from Andrew Cottam of Kendal. The top grossing cow on the day went to a pure Charolais cow from R A & L Hodgson of Patton, selling for £1,329.40 to Dawn Cumbria.

Prime pigs experienced the keenest bidding selling to £176 for a trio of prime Pietrain x gilts from PK & R Woof with others £151 from B & D Willison and £149 from R Strong. Prime pigs generally £92 - £145. Store pigs sold to £66 for best 12 week old white pigs from KF Sweeting with others £51 & £46. Weaners sold to £41 from DE Metcalfe with weaners regularly selling for between £18 - £30.

Next Pig Sale – Tuesday 11th August with another good entry required to meet buyers demand.

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw a ringside of 13 buyers in attendance with several new and returning faces which result-ed in all classes of lambs selling ahead of vendors’ expectations and the quoted average of the previous day with SQQ lambs averaging 160ppk. A top price of £83.50 was achieved for a pen of Texel x lambs from D Dixon, Grayrigg selling to Westmor-land Ltd with others at £83 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Heavy lambs experienced keen bidding generally achieving £22 - £26 over weight. Texel x lambs from TE & J Wadsworth & Son topped the market at 184p per kilo with a further 15 pens over 180p per kilo. The first draw of Mule lambs now coming forward selling to £66 from R I Dixon and 164p/kg from J & AJ Coates & Son. An overall market average of 158p/kg was achieved for lambs ranging from 33kg-54kg.

A reduced entry of 532 Cast Ewes forward compared to the previous week with additional buyers around the ring. A solid trade throughout with a lot of smaller hill bred ewes forward. Buyers continue to be cautious of over fat ewes with lean and fit ewes in strong demand. Strong continental ewes sold in excess of £90 with Charollais ewes topping at £109 from S Middleton of Dale View. Mule ewes sold to a top of £76 from MJ Waller of Carlingwha with strong Mules selling in excess of £70 and all Mules averaging £65. Cheviot ewes in strong demand, selling to a top of £93 from J Allonby & Son of Green Head.
