Alan Blair (Thornfleet), took 1 st and 2 nd place with his ewe lambs. The 1 st place ewe lamb, sired by Carony Columbo also later took Reserve Champion. Overall Champion was won by Keith Denby, Carnforth Suffolks, with his Shearling Ewe, pictured below. North West Suffolk Breeders Club Show

at Lancaster Auction Mart Saturday 30th May

NWA Lancaster hosted the North West Suffolk Breeders Club Show on Saturday 30th May with club members from throughout the North West present. A fantastic line up of sheep were put before the judge, Mark Evans of the Jubilee Flock, with some classes having as many as 13 sheep forward.

The aged and shearling tup class was won by Keith Denby (Carnforth Suffolks), with a homebred shearling tup, Carnforth Patriot by Tomcroft TSB which later went on to win best male and was part of the 1st prize group of 3. Alan Blair (Thornfleet), took 1st and 2nd place with his ewe lambs. The 1st place ewe lamb, sired by Carony Columbo also later took Reserve Champion.

Overall Champion was won by Keith Denby, Carnforth Suffolks, with his Shearling Ewe, pictured below.

Top price this morning was £1220, realised by three different vendors, firstly from SJ Brass, Ingleton with a pen of four Limousin Bullocks, followed by R & E Ladds, Benson Hall with an Angus Bullock and finally by JA & R Geldard with a Stabiliser Heifer. Messers Ladds also sold a pen of 8 Angus Heifers pictured below, realising £1090. Fiesians to £1040 from James Lamb, Old Glasson.

A smaller show of Cast Cows this morning, topping at 164.5ppk for a Fri Cow from G & AS Whitaker, Carnforth. Also at the same money was a Fri Heifer from WD & RD Walmsley, Cockerham. Beef cows sold to 149.5ppk for a Sim Heifer from G, GU & D Swarbrick, Grange-over-Sands. Top gross came from Malcolm Fell, Newton, with a Fri Cow totalling £1166. Overall average for all OTMs forward was 119.6ppk with Friesian Cows averaging 110ppk.

More Calves forward than previous weeks this morning were met by a ringside full to capacity. All classes of calves sold to their full potential, topping at £485, twice, for Blue Bulls at 1m29days from Stephen Robinson of Longber Farm. Charolais heifers sold to £360 from Chris Lund of Pump House and Angus heifers to £290 from the same home. Black and White calves dearer than expected, regularly over £120, topping at £160 for a 5week old from Wallbank Farms, oth-ers to £155 (x2) from Messers Drinkall and £148 from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth. Younger rearing calves £45-£65. Black and Whites averaged a strong £81/head. A run of 13 stirks followed the calves, topping at £610 for a pair of Blue Heifers at 6months from A & L Gardner, Quernmore and the same price for a pair of Blue Bulls again at 6months from A Shepherd, Pressall.

All Stirks sold above and beyond vendors expectations with the vast majority being blues 6-7months old selling between £550-£610.

Winning the May Dugdale Calf Competition was RT Halhead, Cockerham selling a Blue bull at 21days old achieving £398, purchased by H & MI Pye, Chipping.

Prime Hoggs now fast drying up with many meat companies moving onto spring lambs. Heavy weight Texel hoggs sold to £100.50 from CR Eastwood of Bentham.

A larger entry of 1174 Spring Lambs forward sold to a slightly better trade than the previous week with many more meat companies looking to buy them although with plenty of lambs now forward nationwide and the lack of export, all factors affecting this year’s lamb trade. Better quality bred lambs sold easily in excess of 200ppk topping at 236ppk from David Prickett of Farleton House with smart handy weight ¾ Beltex bred lambs. Heavy weight lambs created plenty of interest selling to £97 for 46kg lambs from BR & S Carter of Scronky Farm. Light weight lambs between 32kg and 35kg sold between 190ppk and 200ppk regularly.

A larger entry of Cast Sheep this morning at Lancaster with 116 passing through the ring. Topping the sale was H Birkett & Son, Overton with a Texel tup to £166. Ewes sold to a top of £123 twice, firstly with a Texel ewe from BR & S Carter, Pilling followed by a pure Suffolk from TA Blair, Thornton Cleveleys. Mules sold to a top of £99 from JM Sanderson, Halton, plainer mule ewes a fraction easier on the week, overall average of £78/head for mules. Mashams to £103 from E & N Wright & Sons, Allcocks. Texels sold to a top of £123 with other big ewes in excess of £100. Horned sheep to £83 for Swales from Drinkall Bros and £78 for Dalesbreds from BD Gill, Ingleton. Buyers cautious of over fat ewes and leaner sorts very dear in comparison.

Hoggs twice sold to £182 per outfit both lots from JA Chapman of North Lodge first with a couple of strong Texel’s and then with a pen of bonny mules. Pens of strong continental hoggs sucking their lambs sold easily in excess of £170. Mule hoggs with lambs from hill farms sold in the early £160’s. A small entry of shearlings from Bill Pinder of Longstripes saw mules with twins selling to £180 and singles to £160.

An entry of half a dozen Prime Bulls forward of all dairy bred cattle. British bull blue of dairy cattle sold to 167.5ppk from JM & AG Swarbrick of Bensons Farm

with Montbeliarde bulls from GA Haston & Son of Lane House selling to 147.5ppk.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 28th MayThursday 28th MayThursday 28th MayThursday 28th May The sale of Store Cattle saw a top price of £1075 achieved for a Limousin Cross heifer from D Clark, Challon Hall. The entry of mainly yearling cattle saw Limousin steers £965, £955, £950 and heifers £950, £890, £865. Native Breeds topped at £875 for Aberdeen Angus Heifers with Hereford steers £880 and heifers £800. Young bulls sold to £735 for yearlings from JH Barker. The next sale of store cattle is Thursday 11th June, catalogue entries by 4th June.

Black & white cows to 141.5p/kg from R J & K R Wilkinson of Levens. Continental cows to 139.5p/kg, first for a Limousin x cow from T A Chapman & Son of Helsington, selling to Dawn Cumbria and secondly for a Limousin cow from D Nicholson of Blawith, selling to J Bowling.

As seen in the North West this week, a reduced number of Calves and Stirks forward as many people busy with silage as 54 went under the hammer. Good quality well grown beef calves easily sold £400 plus with a Limousin Bull from TA Chapman and Son of Lane Head Farm selling to £425 and British Blue bulls making £420 from JW & TE Sharpe of Flodder Hall, with British Blue Heifers from the same home selling to £405. Young good types of Continental beef calves sold into the mid £300’s topping at £370 for Limousin heifer from Brian Wilson of Spout House. Black and whites continue to sell in line with other centres at J36 with calves selling to £92 from Messrs Wilson of Wykes Farm for a 3 week old, with other young rearing types selling easily £70 plus.

A larger entry of 25 stirks attracted plenty of attention with purchasers around the ring for all shapes and sizes with a strong trade throughout. British Blue bullocks sold to £740 from HG Spensley of Barnard Castle with heifers from the same home selling to £640. Black and white steers at 8 month old sold to £505 with four month old black and white steers making £315, all from RH & RA Fawcett of Green Dragon Farm. Well finished and three quarter bred lambs were keenly competed for selling to a top price of £96 for Texel x from TW Nelson & Son and 195p/kg for Texel x from TE & A Galbraith with most generally 180-190p/kg. Buyers perhaps showing caution towards under finished lambs

Prime Hoggs now drawing to an end selling to £89 (173p/kg).

The Cast Sheep trade saw buyers very cautious of over-fat ewes, with lean ewes and plain ewes looking very dear in comparison. Big continental and Suffolk tups sold in excess of £130 topping at £141 for a Suffolk from MA & JA Winn of Burneside. Big cull ewes saw a slightly easier trade as more come available on the market. Continental ewes selling regularly in and around £100 with all Texel ewes averaging £87. Mule ewes sold to £94 from S Park of Highfield Farm, with other pens of big fit mule ewes in the mid-eighties. Rough Fell ewes sold to £81 with Swales selling to £69, with fitter Swales selling in the sixties.
