North West Auctions conducted the on farm dispersal sale of Machinery and Equipment on behalf of George & James Huddleston, Borrans Farm, Gressingham. A wide Selection of items attracted buyers from throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The sale commenced with workshop tools and items containing a wide array of lots ranging from nails, nuts, bolts to milking units and chainsaws.

The larger items attracted the keenest interest with a Claas Celtis 456 4ED Tractor c/w loader selling at a final bid of £17,400, a John Deere 3350 4WD £7300 and a MF135 £2150.

Well fleshed cows sold easily over 140ppk topping at 147.5ppk for a Swedish Red cow from EW & RM Towers of Holme Head with OTM heifers from Norbreck Genetics also achieving 147.5ppk. Black and White cows averaged 117ppk.

A smaller entry of Store Cattle forward at Lancaster met a continued strong trade with even larger cattle slightly dearer on the week with grazing cattle and younger cattle continuing to meet a strong demand from a ring full of buyers at Lancaster with more cattle could have been easily sold to vendor’s advantage. Short keep steers and heifers easily sold in excess of £1200 with better sorts selling over £1300 topping at £1360 for 19 month old Limousin steers from John and David Swarbrick of Bensons Farm with David Moorhouse selling Limousin steers for £1330. Native bred cattle of all sizes and ages always required at Lancaster and short of numbers this morning for buyer requirements. A consignment of 8 to 10 month old Montbeliarde steers sold to £690.

A strong entry of Calves this morning saw all classes sell to the continued strong trade. Eight week old Blue calves from S & IA Robinson sold to £440 for bulls and £415 for heifers. A nice run of continental calves from numerous vendors saw 9 Blue bulls average £367 and 10 blue heifers average £350. Older weaned blues sold to £480 for bulls. Black and White calves sold to a top of £160 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead, younger black and whites sold to a far faster trade this morning with plain calves £30-£50 and young yet strong sorts £60-£90, overall average of £87/head. Stirk trade just as fast, with Blue Bulls to £615 & £595 at 8months from A Shepherd, Pilling. Black and White stirks to £400 twice from W Pinder Jnr. Younger Black and White stirks to £340 at 5months from G & ME Woodhouse, Ellel.

A reduced entry this week as numbers begin to slightly dry up with better types selling 190ppk plus topping at 197ppk from AG Butler of Parks Barn with Texel Hoggs. Heavy weight hoggs sold to a top price of £94 from T & E Burrows of Throstle Grove Farm with other heavy hoggs easily selling towards £90.

A bumper entry of just short of 400 Spring Lambs in Lancaster today. Better quality lambs sold in excess of 210ppk topping at 221ppk from G & D Ball of Great Eccleston with white faced lambs easily selling over 200ppk. More interest expected in the coming weeks for prime lambs as many companies being to change over to lambs from hoggs.

A nice entry of predominately fit Cast Ewes this morning sold to an active ringside of buyers. Trade topped at £125 for a Continental ewe from RD Lambert, Out Rawcliffe, closely followed by James Burr, with a Mule ewe at £118. Horned sheep sold to £80 for a pair of Swales from JS & S Atkinson, Sykes Farm. All classes a strong trade, to average £89.53..

The spring show of Hoggs with lambs at foot was kindly judged by Joe Townley of Mearsbeck. A nice quantity of Hoggs forward saw the continental class of five hoggs with single lambs won by David and Sam France of Over Wyresdale with a pen of big hoggs. The pen of five mule gimmer hoggs suckling single lambs was won by Nick Townley of Burnt House.

Hoggs and lambs sold to a strong trade with all vendors going away satisfied. The sale twice topped at £192 firstly for the third prized pen of Continental

hoggs from Brian Carter of Ellel and the third prized hoggs from Nick Townley also achieving £192. Both first prized pens sold to £190 with other pens of Mule

and Continental hoggs selling between £180 and £190 regularly. A few older sheep forward saw mule shearlings with single lambs sell to £185 from John

Huddleston of Annasghyll and older Texel ewes with young Texels lambs from E Parker selling to £180.

All classes and weight were competitively bid for selling to £91.50 or a top price per kg of 231.1p/kg with Lambs. 38-40kg being the easiest to sell with heavier lambs being harder to place.

A very mixed show of Prime Hoggs were forward topping at £91.50 for a pen of Texel Hoggs from Messrs Thompson of Samlesbury. Good meated Hoggs were good to sell, whilst leaner grass fed sorts met with more caution.

Once again a strong show of Cast Sheep were forward and with extra buyers stood ringside. All classes sold to a strong trade with Mule ewes and plain ewes seeing a sharp rise on the week. Ewes topped at £135 for Texels from JC Dunning of Orton, Mules to £119 from TE & J Wadsworth & Son of Sedgwick and horned sheep to £100 for Swaledales from Messrs Drinkall of Over Wyresdale. A new market record of £400 for Mule Hoggs with Lambs at Foot.

North West Auctions held their weekly sale of sheep with Lambs at Foot which included the Annual Show and sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot. The show was judged by Mr Phillip Elliott of Penrith. After judging the two classes of Hoggs the Judge awarded the Champion Rosette to an outstanding pen of Mule Hoggs with single Texel lambs at foot from Messrs Winter of Clickham Farm, Appleby and these went onto sell for £400 an outfit to Messrs Holt of Lancaster.

The second prize winners from Messrs Sowerby of Terry’s Farm went onto sell for £248 to Messrs TH Gibson and Son of Kendal. A fantastic run of 80 Hoggs with Lambs at Foot from Alan Edmondson of Ulverston topped at £215 an Outfit and his run of Hoggs averaged just short of £100 a life.

The best quality Continental Hoggs proved good to sell however plainer Hoggs were harder to place. The First Prize Hoggs from Mr Tony Chapman of Kendal sold to £210 an outfit to Mr P. Elliot.

Once again a strong show of commercial Sheep were forward being made up of predominately older ewes, with fresh faces stood ringside all classes sold to a very competitive trade.
