Farm Machinery Dispersal

The final chapter in the life of the late Mr Allan Armitstead,

Hullater Farm was conducted on Saturday 29th

November at J36. It was our pleasure to have the

responsibility to conduct the sale of farm machinery and

workshop tools to a massive crowd of customers who had

turned out. This ensured every single item was sold in

excess of expectation.

The workshop tools saw a large array of both vintage and

modern farm tools sell to a packed ringside, whilst out on

the yard, farm machinery and tractors found new homes with buyers from near and far including Ireland and the

South East.

Large cattle continue to sell well at Lancaster selling to a top of £1330 from David Moorhouse of High House with a Limousin steer, another from the same home sold to £1310. Blue bullocks from DJ Casson, Slyne sold to £1290. Nelson Pye, of Scotforth showed some nice Charollais bullocks which went on to realise £1280. Angus bullocks sold to £1270 from JH Woof & Sons, Oxenholme and J & M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor. Heifers sold to £1220 for a pair of Angus Heifers from J Tattersall of Snub Snape Farm.

Christmas Store Cattle Classes for Pair of Heifers & Pair of Bullocks - Best Pair of Bullocks to win the Tom Owen Memorial Trophy. Judging 10:30am - Sale 11:15am.

OTM cattle and Cast Cows continue to come forward in good numbers this week at Lancaster with 92 forward. A sharper trade was had for cows carrying meat and straight cows, lean plain cows harder to sell with a large number of plain cows forward this week. Cows sold to a top of 141.5ppk from TW Nelson & Son of Cockrigg Farm with a Limousin cow with other beef cows selling over 120ppk. Black and whites topped at 134.5ppk from Ballacutchel Farms with well fleshed black and whites selling 105ppk plus regularly. An overall average of 98ppk was achieved.

Christmas Cast Cows, prizes for highest price continental p/kg, highest price dairy p/kg and Top Price per head overall. Sale at 10:15am.

A nice entry of 56 Calves and Stirks forward saw a mixed entry with both new vendors and buyers in attendance. A fantastic run of Angus calves from Phillip Halhead saw Angus bulls at 42days to £350 and a run of Angus heifers at 38days to £305 to average £255, Simmental heifers sold to £320 again from the same good home. Blue Bulls sold to £370 from F & E Harrison, Wray. Young Hereford Bulls sold £225 from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow. Friesian bulls were met by a brisk trade, topping at £185 at 37day old from Enchanted Holsteins, others from WN & D Smith, Cockerham sold to £128. Best B&W sorts sold £70-£90 with plainer calves £30-£60, overall average of £58.21 for all black and whites forward. Stirks forward in good numbers with Blonde Heifers from Stuart Taylor selling to £465. Limousin heifers sold to £440 and Blues to £420 again from Stuart Taylor. Winner of the monthly Dugdale Nutrition Calf competition was Phillip Halhead, selling a Blue Bull at 1month 6days to £430.

Next week sees the Christmas Show with Classes for Continental, Native bred and Dairy Bulls. Judging 9:30am - Sale 10:15am. Calves eligible for show (under 56days old) to be born on the 10th October or after.

A small entry of Store Lambs forward at Lancaster sold to a very good trade with all lambs forward averaging £67.51 selling to a top of £68.50 from JM Kelsall & Son of Low Pleasant. 187ppk. All classes of lambs were in strong demand with best sorts selling up toward the 200ppk mark topping at

205ppk from D Cockett of Wilson Wood with a pair of Beltex Lambs. The day’s top price came from George

Sanderson of Blackleach House Farm selling a pen of heavy weight lambs to £103. More hill bred lambs forward

today saw mules sell to 183ppk and average 180ppk and Horned lambs top at 183ppk averaging 176ppk.

Monday 8th December sees the Christmas Show & Sale, classes for all breeds pens of 5. Judging 8.30am sale at 9am.

Good sorts still good to sell and plenty more could of been sold today selling to a top of £375 from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall with a British Blue Bull. Limousin Bulls sold to £350 from Brian Wilson of Spout House. Young beef calves were keenly sort after today with men around the ring looking to multi suckle calves. A mixed bag of black and whites this week saw young calves to £75 from DW Cottam of Hagg Farm. A larger selection of weaned calves and Stirks forward this week selling to a good trade with Stirks topping at £480 for Limousin heifers.

A smaller entry of new calved Dairy heifers this week sold to a similar trade as seen over previous weeks at J36, Heifers sold to a top price of £1850 from E & K Bland of Cotegill Farm with an overall sale average of £1670 achieved today. A consignment of Dairy weanlings from Langley Park Farms sold to a strong trade with plenty of buyers around the ring eager to buy. All the heifers forward sold to an average of £415 topping at £500.

Store Cattle continue to sell to recent high prices at J36 selling to a top price of £1070 for a pen of three Continental steers 10 month old from FW Park of Bannerigg Farm with others from the same home selling to £1040. Heifers sold to £980. Just a few suckler calves in the market today selling to a top price of £820 from AG & ME Clarke of Ashes.

A selection of Beef Breeding cattle forward today mainly made up of older cows sold to a strong trade with vendors going away pleased with the trade. Cows

and calves sold to £1,000 for an old cow and a young Hereford calf at foot from WE Nelson of Low Sorbies. In calf cows sold to £900 with a six year old

Limousin breeding bull selling to £1120.

A Plain show of Cast Cows were put before a full ringside of buyers at the fortnightly sale at J36. Well fleshed cows were good to sell but fell short of buyers requirements. Black and White cows topped at 139.5p/kg from Messrs RA & E Edmondson of Levens, but leaners type cows were 80-90p/kg. Continental Cows topped at 169.5p/kg for a Simmental Cross Cow from Messrs E Tuer of Windermere. Only a few Clean Cattle forward today topping at 189.5p/kg for a Simmental Heifer again from Messrs E Tuer.

A sharp trade for Store Lambs today at J36 with plenty of buyers around the ring eager to buy every type of lamb forward to the market today. Short keep lambs in strong demand selling to a top of £72.50 for a pen of Charollais x lambs from Coward Brothers of Kirkby Hall. Plenty of pens of short keep lambs continental lambs sold between £65 and £70. Mid keep lambs sold in line with other markets and long keep lambs seeming the dearest on the day with plenty of people looking to buy them this week. Store lambs sold to an overall average of £59.26.

Tuesday 2nd DecemberTuesday 2nd DecemberTuesday 2nd DecemberTuesday 2nd December North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime sheep at J36 where 2,500 Prime Lambs and cast sheep were put before a full ringside of buyers and, as with other centres, numbers were much tighter than the previous week which drove the prices up considerably across the board. Lambs topped at £95 per head for a pen of Suffolk x lambs from Tom Parkin of Sedbergh and top price per kilo of 219.5p/kg for a pen of Charollais lambs from David Dickinson of Haverthwaite. The smarter end of lambs were regularly 210-215p/kg, commercial lambs 195-205p/kg. Once again a strong show of Hill bred lambs were forward with a top price of £83 per head being paid for a pen of Mules from Colin Bateman of Docker. The first significant show of well fed Horned lambs were forward with Swaledales to 193.2p/kg and £71.50 per head from Fishwick Brothers of Longsleddale and top price of £75.50 from Messrs Hodgson of Rydal Farm. Rough Fell lambs sold to £80.50 from Colin Bateman of Docker.

A fantastic overall average of 186.33p/kg was seen with a SQQ of 188.57p/kg.

All classes of Cast Sheep saw a much sharper trade on the week especially the better end of sheep with these seeing a rise of £10 to £12 per head. The top price went to J C Dunning of Orton for a pen of 3 Texel rams at £120 per head with plenty of Texel x ewes at £110 - £115. Mule ewes sold to £86 with the majority £78 - £82. Horned ewes topped at £68 for a pen of Rough Fells from RJ & OB Simpson of Longsleddale and Swaledales to £54 with plenty of lean Horned ewes £25 - £30. North West Auctions also held their Christmas Prize Show & Sale of Prime Pigs. The judge, Mr George Hodgson, awarded the Championship rosette to a pair of Pietrain x gilts from C Dean & LJ Brennand which later sold for £155 per head and were purchased by W Taylor & Son. The second prize pigs achieved £135 for Welsh gilts form A J Horn with 3rd Prize pair of Saddleback x £102 from DC Miller.

Store pigs sold to £72 with others at £60. A large entry of weaners saw an increased demand with best white weaners £40 & £35 with coloured weaners to £28.
