FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK
There comes a rare occasion when a date remains imprinted in your memory, not because something
happened on that day but for something that did not happen. That date is Oct 12, 2014. The cyclone Hud
Hud did not happen as predicted thus sparing NIST and Berhampur the horrors of
yet another Phailin (which had happened same date same time – talk of celestial coinci-
dences!). Our sympathies are with the denizens of Visakhapatnam and people of south-
ern interior districts of Odisha. Of course during the process, we discovered the unique
achievements of our scientific community which could predict to the dot about these
impending meteorological catastrophes which has helped save human lives and property.
That almost simultaneously the successful orbiting of Mars Orbiter Spacecraft around
Planet Mars made this a moment to be really proud of our scientists and technologists. To
the scientists of ISRO - We take a bow! May more NISTians be inspired to join the
Defence and Space Organizations.
The NIST Astronomy Club recently added a new telescope to its arsenal. They viewed Planet Uranus and
Saturn with its numerous rings. I always wanted to peer into the night sky and wonder at the miracle our Galaxy
is. That we can do so from the top of the Atrium Building has been a small dream come true. In an age when so
many of our youngsters are developing inertia and early burn-out, I challenge you to come out of your shell and
learn about Nature and Environment all around us with childlike enthusiasm. Develop a hobby which will stay
with you for your entire life – NIST is the best place to do so!
We welcome all the new faculty members – we are highly enthusiastic that the new batch of students of 2014
will rise to the expectations of NIST and fulfil the mission and objectives of our Institute.
Best Wishes for the forthcoming University Semester examinations for all our students.
Sangram Mudali
FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK
NIST e_news welcomes all the new faculty members and students of the batch of 2014. The students
had exposure to different facets of life through an Orientation Program: arts and crafts, literature,
policy, politics, environment, media, etc., were taught through the eyes of experienced practitioners
and experts in those domains. This unique Orientation Program owes its origin to a similar program of IIT
Gandhinagar and has been well received by the student community.
This issue of NIST e_news has a special message: we would like to urge the readers, both students and
instructors equally that the industry has become over demanding. It is holistic learning that counts. The placement
drives have compelled us to pass on the message to the aspirants that Life is NOT
Easy. Soft Skills and especially Communication Skills share equal merit with Domain
knowledge. So Readers gear up, update and acquaint yourselves with the two Worlds:
NIST and the Industry. Happy Reading!

The Campus Placements of the TOP Multi National Companies is
being held in the 7th semester (final year) which is generally
starting in the month of September every year in the various
Institutions of Odisha including NIST. TOP companies such as Infosys
Limited, Wipro Technologies, Cap Gemini India, Tech Mahindra etc. are
visiting NIST for the campus recruitment every year. Recently the job
markets have opened up and companies are in a mood to hire students of
the graduating batch.
It’s a matter of great concern that students are becoming serious only at
the beginning of the 7th semester around June / July and are struggling a
lot to prepare for the campus recruitment. Two months is not sufficient
to get ready for the campus recruitment of the TOP companies as the
selection criteria and process is extremely tough and stringent. Hence
majority of the students are not even able to clear the simple secondary
school standard general online aptitude tests of these companies.
The career planning for Placements must start right from the 1st semester.
During the most important Technical & HR Interviews the questions are
asked from C, C++, Java, DBMS, Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating
Systems, Basic Electrical, Basic Electronics and Basic Instrumentation,
etc. These are the subjects which are mostly taught between 1st to 5th
semesters and are generally common to all the streams.
If the students want to be selected with companies during campus recruitment then they should work
for it throughout all the semesters.
Moreover, all the Recruitment Managers of the above mentioned companies have strongly recommended that
all the students must be excellent in written and spoken English. The students are poor in English and during
the 1st to 6th semester they are not doing anything to improve the quality of their written & spoken English.
The students are poor in Grammar, Vocabulary, Sentence Constructions, Reading, Writing & Speaking skills
in English. In order to improve English the following needs to be done:
1. Read all the articles published in the editorial pages of all the leading English News Papers every day.
2. The students must prepare power-point presentations & deliver talks in each subject in each semester during
the class hours to improve their communication & presentation skills.
3. The students must read the Barron’s GRE Guide & English to English Dictionaries to enhance vocabulary
and learn antonyms, synonyms.
4. Students should read the basic secondary school level good grammar books to improve the usage of
prepositions, articles etc.
5. Most importantly, all students must make it a habit to speak in English while on the campus.
Hence on behalf of the Training and Placement department I urge all the students of all semesters to stay
focused & plan to prepare thoroughly for campus recruitments held in 7th semester starting from the 1st
semester. The students must do at least THREE TECHNICAL SUMMER CERTIFICATION COURSES at the
end of 2nd, 4th & 6th semester. I hope all of you will take this message and feedback seriously and act
accordingly for your future career.
