PUNJAB - In an era where we witness various movies ondifferent concepts, ideologies and genres, to create sucha remarkable cinema is not only the contribution of themainstream cinema Bollywood by creating movies likeDangal, Airlif t etc. but also from the other par ts of Indiaas well which generally quotes as Regional Cinema.Movies like Kurukshetra (Malayalam), Sairat and Cour t(Marathi) and of course Baahubali (Telugu) are anexample of this. These movies not only strengthened ourbelief in power of Cinema but also the potential thatDirectors, Actors, Writers and Crew showcasing in theother and remote par ts of India.Like above-mentioned masterpieces, we are about towitness a gem of a movie produced by Saga Music andSeven Color Motion Pictures- a leading production housein Punjabi Cinema on a war hero, a veteran on the vergeof retirement, a Param Vir Chakra recipient (India'sHighest Gallantry Award) (Posthumously) SubedarJoginder Singh. We have witnessed various war films inboth Bollywood like Border, LOC Kargil, Lakshya etc. butSubedar Joginder Singh will be one of a kind biopic on aGallantry Award Recipient for his Supreme Sacrifice forthe nation. In a time when India is in a close combatsituation with China over Doklam or Doka La region atIndia-Bhutan-China trijunction it will be a great signifi-cance for us to know about the War where these twocountries met each other last time and how ourunacclimated but valiant forces fought strong People'sLiberation Army of China. This movie is believed to coverthe war scenarios and valor of our soldiers with theauthenticity of languages spoken and events occurredalong side of the war. Role of Subedar Joginder Singhwill be por trayed by Gippy Grewal, Ace Singer-cum-Actor of Punjab who has been applauded for his versatileroles in the films like Manje Bistre, Carry on Jatta andlots more. Gippy believes this role to be challenging andcreative, he is complementing his belief with his sheerdedication as he has to first lose weight and then gaindouble the weight. Such a detailed storyline suppor ted bysuch a level of versatility and dedication is expected tomake this movie a wor th watch.

SUBEDAR JOGINDERSINGHPORTRAYED BY GIPPYGREWAL IN WAR BIOPIC

Gaurav (Sidhar th Malhotra), an Indian boy settled in Miami, with a secure nine-to-five job, his own sprawling house andmini-van, is every inch the "sundar and susheel" boy anyparent would want for their daughter. But alas, Kaavya(Jaqueline Fernandez), his friend and colleague, the girl hehas a soft spot for, finds him too nice, safe and boring. Maybe, then, he should be a bit risky? Enter Rishi, (Sidhar thMalhotra) an orphan, a tough guy who works for a secretagent group, Unit X, led by 'Colonel' (Suneil Shetty), and yousee the risky bit too.But Rishi wants to give up this dare-devilry and lead a normallife with a family and home. How he manages to change hislife and the extent to which he succeeds, is essentially whatthis two hours-plus action-comedy film is all about. DirectorsRaj and DK manage to infuse a lot of gloss, exciting actionand colour into the film, which is racy, but sorely lacks a plot. The drama element and emotional quotient are missing. The narrative is deliberately confusing but does not help tokeep the audience engrossed. The characters lack depth andthere is no chemistry between the lead pair, although they areattractive on screen. The humour, injected by way of somewitty lines as well as the situational comedy owing to the

mistaken identity, is the only saving grace, else the writinglacks gravitas. Sidhar th, as the quintessential good boy Gauravand the rustic and reckless Rishi, per forms with conviction andslips into each avatar distinctively. His screen presence andthe way he has delivered the high-octane action scenes are atreat to watch. However, it is the poor script that is his undoing.Jaqueline Fernandez manages to look like the smar t and hipIndian girl settled in Miami that she is touted to be. She hasgood comic timing and makes a sincere attempt to be thecharacter. Her pole dance, albeit shor t, makes for good view-ing. Suneil Shetty, af ter a long hiatus, disappoints terribly withhis dead-pan dialogue delivery and desperate attempt to lookmenacing and macho, as 'Colonel.'The other actors as par t of the Unit X deliver by way of actionconvincingly but naturally have nothing else to offer. Rajit Kapurand Supriya Pilgaonkar are absolutely wasted. The film is well-mounted and showcases upmarket locales in Miami, Mumbaiand Goa with finesse. The action scenes are well-choreo-graphed but not exactly thrilling. The music is ordinary with "OChandralekha" being well-picturised and foot-tapping. Overall, swathed in mindless but slick action, this poorly told tale ispurely risky to watch.

My friendships in Bollywoodhave survived: Arjun Kapoor

BY DURGA CHAKRAVARTYNEW DELHI, (IANS) Actor Arjun Kapoor says his friend-ships in the industry have survived as competition in Hindifilmdom is very external. Before venturing into acting in2012 with "Ishaqzaade", the son of producer Boney Kapoorserved as an assistant director and associate producer onseveral films, including "Kal Ho Naa Ho" and "Wanted".There's so much competition in Bollywood. Don't friend-ships get affected by it?"The competition is veryexternal. People per-ceive that there mustbe a lot of compe-t i t i on i n t e r na l l y,but everybody isjust making eachday count. Nobodywakes up lookingat competition in themorning," Arjun toldIANS ove r phone f romMumbai. "It is an external force, but within ... the friend-ships that I have had, survived. They have lasted forfive years and it's not been such a big issue," he added. His filmography has been a mix and hits and misseswith films like "Ishaqzaade", "2 States", "Gunday", "HalfGirlfriend", "Ki & Ka" and "Mubarakan"."I think it (his journey in Bollywood) has been a goodstar ting point, foundation and most impor tantly, it's beena filmography of different films. When I look at my ownwork, I do feel l ike I am pushing in terms of tryingdifferent genres, working with different people and learn-ing in the process," he said. However, he says he hasn'tachieved it all yet. "I am very happy with the first fiveyears of my career," he added.Bollywood celebrities are now opening up about theirpersonal lives and issues like depression. Arjun sayshe is at ease about sharing cer tain aspects of his life, but would only do it if he feels it's necessary. "De-pends on what your personal life or issues you want totalk about, how relevant it is, if the need is there to put itout.... A lot of things also get misconstrued by people. Youmight be speaking honestly and the other person might notinterpret it correctly." Arjun, 32, says it cannot be a "ma-nipulative share."

Not practical on workingwith three Khans: BalkiNEW DELHI, (IANS) Filmmaker R. Balki, who has workedwith Amitabh Bachchan in all his movies, doesn't think it'spractical for him to plan a project with Bollywood's leadingKhans. At an interactive session on Harnessing the Powerof Creativity from Ads-Shads to Films-Shilms for FicciLadies Organisation (FLO), Balki was asked if he'd be giventhe option to work with Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan andSalman Khan, who would it be at the top of his list. He saidhe's working with Akshay Kumar in "PadMan", and wouldlove to keep working with Amitabh.Prodded why he does not work with the Khans, he said:"No, not like that..It's just that if I star t thinking of making afilm with them right now, I will get quite old by the time Istar t... I'd rather be more practical." Balki was presentwith his filmmaker wife Gauri Shinde, both of whom havecontributed significantly to the Indian adver tising field aswell brought a freshness to Hindi cinema with their mov-ies. While Balki is known for movies like "Cheeni Kum"and "Paa", Gauri has carved her niche with hear t-warmingfilms like "English Vinglish" and "Dear Zindagi". In a fieldwhere 'nepotism' is the hot debate, the two are examplesof outsiders who have cemented their space.Gauri, who is junior to Balki in the ad and filmmaking world, quipped: "He got there first... So, there's a bit of nepotismthere... I think it's tough until you prove yourself, and youneed something success.`Balki said that "it's an industrylike most other industries... They celebrate success. It'sreally simple. There can be camps and other things, but allcamps form around successful people... It's very strange. But to achieve that, you need something very interesting tostar t with and more impor tantly lots of luck... There aresome brilliant people out there who haven't had the chanceto be famous and it's not getting any easier... Once youhave all that, it's not that tough to survive in the industrybecause there are camps."

GOOD CONTENT WILL ALWAYSRULE: AMITABH BACHCHAN

MUMBAI, (PTI) Megastar Amitabh Bachchan said content matters the most and that no amount oftechnological advancement will hinder the growth of television. "With each passing month, anew technology is coming out but good content will always rule. I feel if the content is strong, pure and good and no amount of technological advancement will hinder that," Bachchan toldrepor ters here last evening when asked if web series are a threat to conventional TV.He was speaking on the sidelines of the media conference of the 9th season of "Kaun BanegaCrorepati". Bachchan said he is honoured and humbled every time he is approached for theKBC. "For me and Sony Television it is like family, we don't look at this show as commercialproposition. 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' has been a life changer for many contestants. I don't haveany qualms in admitting that it has been a life changer for me as well," he added. The 74-year-old star said "Kaun Banega Crorepati" celebrates the dreams and aspirations of thecommon man and their tryst with knowledge. Theshow, which is returning after three years, will have 30-35 episodes and themakers said it was a deliberate decision to come up with small season."The brief this time was that we make it a small season, the game playingshould be fast, the duration of the episode should be tight so that we canhave a classical game play and we can come every season. We want tomake it a calendar event," said Danish Khan, EVP and Business Head atSony Enter tainment Television (SET).

Have stopped doing films out offriendships, emotions: AjayMUMBAI, (PTI) Having been in the industry for over 25 years, Ajay Devgnsays his process of choosing a movie has become "more clear" today andhe now goes forward with a project only if its script is good. Devgn thinkstoday the stakes have become too high for an actor to say yes to a film outof emotional reasons. "Earlier we would just listen to an idea and say 'lets do it.Films were releasing left right and centre, we were doing 12 films at a time, so wedid a lot of movies purely out of emotions and for relationships."The process of choosing a film has become more clear today. Now, it reallymeans business. Stakes are too high, there is too many pressure," Devgn tells PTIin an interview. Though initially he did choose cer tain movies for the friendship's

sake, Devgn insists he never took on a film just tosurvive in the industry. "There was never a phase whereI chose a film purely to survive as there was too muchwork. There has always been too much work and I'vebeen lucky that ways. There was no need of 'survival'.It was either you liked a script or you do it for friendsand for the emotions." The 48-year-old National Award-winning actor says the change in selecting a film cameabout with time as the audience has evolved. "For me,it has become clear (to choose a film) not because ofthe external pressure but because the audience hasevolved a lot. You can't ever judge the taste accuratelybut you do have a barometer. "I should enjoy doing afilm, which is very impor tant. Filmmaking isn't just theprocess of a release, it is 100 days of shooting beforethat. If I don't enjoy that, I will not be able to work." The"Shivaay" actor, who has teamed up with Milan Luthriafor the four th time in "Baadshaho", says working withfriends help a lot as they all are on the same page. Hislatest period heist action thriller is directed by Milan, who has previously given hits such as, "Once Upon ATime in Mumbaai", "Chori Chori" and "Kachche Dhaage".

'QAIDI BAND': TUGS AT THE RIGHT CHORDS

CAST: AADAR JAIN, ANYA SINGH, MIKHAIL

YAWALKAR, ANNA ADOR, CYNDY KHOJOL

DIRECTOR: HABIB FAISAL

RATING: ***

Director Habib Faisal's "Qaidi Band", inspired by real lifeevents, is a sugar-coated tale. Citing the case of MachalLalung, the longest arrested under trial, the film revolves arounda group of young individuals who are arrested for variouscrimes. Due to lack of funds and family suppor t, they are lef t torot behind bars. By happenstance, the Superintendent of theprison Mr. Dhulia (Sachin Pilgaonkar) -- to enter tain a politicianduring his visit to the prison -- orders his prisoners to form aband. After duly auditioning, a group of seven -- three girls andfour guys: Bindu, Tatyana, Sange along with Sanju, Rufi,Maskeen and Ogu -- are selected to per form.On the eventual day, the attending media, enamoured by thegroup's per formance before the politician, broadcasts the show. And soon, their song, "I'm India", grabs the attention of themasses. They become a phenomenon. How this group thenuses their popularity to gain freedom forms the crux of the tale. The plot is simple, straight-forward and by mid-point predict-able. Never theless, its enduring appeal stands on three sturdylegs.Firstly, it captures the nasty atrocities meted out to theunder trials in a no-nonsense and unpretentious manner. Also, the camera work along with the fine production values isnotewor thy. The film has the confidence and a sense of purposethat warms the hardest hear t. Its second strength lies in theper formances of the cast. The seven protagonists may not beconventional heroes. But their por trayal of their characters is

realistic and believable. The depth they bring to what couldhave been a one-dimensional character is impressive.Anya Singh and Aadar Jain wow us as Bindu and Sanju withtheir sincerity. Though Aadar has a strong resemblance to hiscousin Ranbir Kapoor, he does manage to leave an imprint withhis histrionics. Ana Ador sways us as Tatyana with her dancingand sense of rhythm. Cyndy Khojol impresses us as Sange withher resolute strength and defiance. Mikhail Yawalkar, PeterMuxha Manuel and Prince Parvinder Singh as Rufi, Ogu andMaskeen are charming. Their demeanour and personality suitstheir character and each one of them por trays their role con-vincingly.Sachin Pilgaonkar, as the dictatorial Superintendent of Prisons,is refreshingly honest. He makes you cringe and hate him whenhe tries to extract information from the family of the under trialsor tor tures those who are captured af ter escaping from theclutches of the police. Ram Kapoor as an eminent lawyer, Mr.Vachchani, lacks the persona and is the only odd one among thecast. And finally, of course, there are the songs -- the lyrics arestrongly worded and magnificently structured. And theyseamlessly integrate with the narrative. What is missing in theplot are scenes that emotionally elevate the tempo of thenarrative. Though it has its fair share of melodrama, theexuberance needed for a musical is missing. 'SNIFF': AMOLE GUPTE SERVES UPAN OLFACTORY DELIGHT

CAST: KHUSHMEET GILL, MANMEET SINGH,

SUREKHA SIKRI, SUSHMITA MUKHERJEE

DIRECTOR: AMOLE GUPTE

RATING: ***1/2

The best thing about "Sniff" is the wonder ful children -- God blesstheir untarnished souls -- who play detectives to a car thief in Mumbai. But wait. This is much later. This is where our interest in the goings-on begins to flag. The minute Sunny Gill (the wonderfully solemn andwise Khushmeet) turns super-snooper the plot loses its flexibility andmomentum and falls prey to a kind of hushed rush of juvenile activi-ties that don't really add up to much. But this absence of a hefty payoff is not what we are looking for ormissing in this film. Straight out, "Sniff" is a charming ode to thetastebuds and the olfactory nerves, both co-related as one gives youa yummy feeling in the mouth and the other in the nose. But what ifyou are born with no sense of smell? Little Khushmeet plays onesuch unfor tunate child of fate. Born into a family of pickle makers, hecan't smell the aroma of the spices that forever emanates from hislovable grandma Surekha Sikri's kitchen. It's not so much in the way the film tickles the tastebuds that the filmgathers its vigour and strength. It's in the way the film celebrates thesmells and sounds of food. Not since "The Mistress Of The Spices"has any film given us such an aromatic view of food and cooking. The camera manned by the magician of the lenses Manush Nandan, glides with sly smoothness over edibles, creating for us a kind ofheaven on the palate. For me the best, most cherishable moments in

the narrative are those where smell-proof Sunny sits stoically atthe family meal watching other family members 'ooh' and 'aah' overfamily pickles.Sunny can't smell, you see. Once Sunny finds his sense of smell, thenarrative creates a big stink over a stolen car on the society apar tmentpremises. Nonetheless the film's ar tless charm holds till the end. Allthe child actors are wonderful, far superior in their ability to hold to-gether the proceedings by the lapels of their own convictions than theadult performers who are way too conscious of their obligation to letthe children take the forefront.Luckily for us, editor Deepa Bhatia allows the children more space inthe goings-on than she does to the tantrum-throwing adults. In spite ofa weak denouement the kids amply hold the plot together. Sound de-signer Avinash Sonavanve keeps the frames vibrant with extraneousnoises. Very often I found myself listening to the sounds of silence thatsurround little Sunny's serene presence.Once the noise takes over he withdraws into a world of his own faraway from our inquisitive eyes. Which is a pity. Because Sunny's worldand his charming friends show director Amole Gupte in pursuit of thosesimple little pleasures that we lose as we grown older. Pleasures likelicking the pickle from a jar and smacking the lips. Thank you, Amole, for giving our childhood back to us.
