FOUNTAIN VALLEY - Hyundai Motor America recently announced pricing for the all-new 2017 Elantra Eco, which comes well-equipped with a new fuel- efficient turbocharged powertrain, advanced safety features and user-friendly technology for $20,650. Assembled in Montgomery at Hyundai Motor Manu- facturing Alabama, the new Elantra Eco arrives in dealerships this month, joining the rest of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra trims including the value-packed SE and the premium-appointed Limited. "Now entering its sixth-generation, the Elantra model has always been syn- onymous with value in the highly competitive compact car segment," said Mike Evanoff, manager, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. "With the new Elantra we not only focused key development objectives on perfor- mance, ride quality and efficiency, but committed ourselves to delivering a compelling value proposition at all price points. The Eco is an all-new trim for Elantra that offers consumers enhanced fuel efficiency with a 1.4-liter turbo- charged and direct injected powertrain combined with standard high-de- mand features such as Blind Spot Detection and our 7-inch display audio system with Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ support." Exclusive to the Elantra Eco is an all-new efficient 1.4-liter Kappa turbo- charged GDI 4-cylinder producing 128 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a robust 156 lb-ft. of torque at a low 1,400 ~ 3,700 rpm. This engine is mated to a new seven-speed EcoShift® dual-clutch transmission providing dynamic and efficient driving performance through its optimized gear-ratios and seamless shifting. With this innovative powertrain, the Elantra Eco delivers an impres- sive 35 mpg combined, 32 city and 40 mpg highway on regular unleaded gasoline and could result in an average annual fuel cost of just $950 (source: fueleconomy.gov). An integrated cylinder head and exhaust manifold help to improve fuel economy at higher engine speeds, while an optimized straight intake port increases tumble flow for fast combustion, suppressing knock tendency to further enhance effi- ciency. In addition, all Elantras are equipped with a new Drive Mode Select feature that adjusts both powertrain performance and steering effort, allowing the driver to customize the driving character by selecting from three modes: Eco, Normal or Sport, simply by touching a button on the center console. TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Mark McLean announced that there were 12,870 home sales reported through TREB's MLS® System in May 2016. This result represented a new record for the month of May and a 10.6 per cent increase over the same period last year. In contrast, the number of new listings was down over the same time frame by 6.4 per cent. The decline in listings was experienced in both the low-rise and condominium apartment market segments. "Whether we're talking about existing homeowners or people looking to purchase for the first time, there is no shortage of buyers in the marketplace today. So, while the record number of home sales through the first five months of 2016 is not neces- sarily surprising, it does sometimes mask the larger story in the GTA: the shortage of listings, which has resulted in strong upward pressure on home prices," said Mr. McLean. The MLS® Home Price Index Composite Benchmark was up by 15 per cent year-over-year in May 2016. Similarly, the average selling price for all home types combined was up by 15.7 per cent over the same period. Low-rise home types, which remained in short supply in many GTA neighbourhoods, experi- enced the strongest price growth. "Widespread competition between buyers of singles, semis and townhouses across the GTA has underpinned the robust annual rates of price growth experienced so far this year. With this said, however, it is also important to understand that tighter market conditions for condominium apartments have resulted in price growth well above the rate of inflation in this market segment as well," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis.

After Circus premiers on June 12TORONTO - As children, we have all run away with the Circus,at least in our imaginations - trading in our predictable dailylives for ones full of adventure, travel, camaraderie, free-dom, creativity, per formance, derring-do and applause. Butwhat happens to real Circus ar tists "off the wire", when thewear & tear on their bodies forces them to retire after hav-ing spent their lives enter taining and inspiring us. AFTERCIRCUS, premiering Sunday, June 12 at 9pm on CBC's docu-mentary Channel, is a feature-length documentary thattakes a unique look at a tightly-knit Circus community inSarasota, Florida - winter home of Ringling Bros. Circus andknown as 'The Circus Capital of the World'.

Why smoking puts you atincrease risk of oral diseasesNEW YORK, (IANS) Puffing cigarettes can increase the likeli-hood that certain bacteria will not only set up camp but willbuild a for tified city in the mouth and fight against the im-mune system, thereby making you vulnerable to oral dis-eases, new research suggests. Bacteria can form biofilmson most sur faces including teeth, hear t valves and the res-piratory tract. Biofilms are composed of numerous micro-bial communities often made up of complex, interactingand co-existing multispecies structures. "Once a pathogenestablishes itself within a biofilm, it can be difficult to eradi-cate as biofilms provide a physical barrier against the hostimmune response, can be impermeable to antibiotics andact as a reservoir for persistent infection," said one of theresearchers David Scott from University of Louisville Schoolof Dentistry in the US.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Asthma patients may soon do away with theirinhalers as researchers, including one of Indian origin, have devel-oped an integrated, wearable system that monitors a user's environ-ment, hear t rate and other physical attributes with the goal of predict-ing and preventing asthma attacks."We have tested the system in the benchtop and on a limited numberof human subjects for proof of concept demonstration and have con-firmed that all of the sensors work, and that the system accuratelycompiles the data," said study co-author Veena Misra, professor atNor th Carolina State University in the US. The system, called theHealth and Environmental Tracker (HET), incorporates a host of novelsensing devices, which are incorporated into a wristband and a patchthat adheres to the chest. The patch includes sensors that track apatient's movement, hear t rate, respiratory rate, the amount of oxy-gen in the blood, skin impedance and wheezing in the lungs. Thewristband focuses largely on environmental factors, monitoring vola-tile organic compounds and ozone in the air, as well as ambient hu-

midity and temperature. The wristband also includes additional sen-sors to monitor motion, hear t rate and the amount of oxygen in theblood. The system also has one nonwearable component: a spirom-eter, which patients breathe into several times a day to measure lungfunction. Data from all of these sensors is transmitted wirelessly to acomputer, where custom software collects and records the data.

elite master athletes (averageage: 47) and compared themto a control group of 33 menwho were similar in terms ofage, size and weight but whohad not done any kind ofendurance exercise. Thegroup of athletes, which

SYDNEY, (IANS) Eating the right amount of fibre from breads, cereals, and fruits can help us avoid disease and disability into old age -- abenchmark of successful ageing, says a study led by an Indian-originresearcher.Using data compiled from the Blue Mountains Eye Study, a popula-tion-based study that examined a cohor t of more than 1,600 adultsaged 50 years and older for long-term sensory loss risk factors andsystemic diseases, the researchers explored the relationship betweencarbohydrate nutrition and healthy aging. They found that out of all the factors they examined -- which includeda person's total carbohydrate intake, total fibre intake, glycemicindex, glycemic load, and sugar intake -- it was the fibre thatmade the biggest difference to what the researchers termed "suc-cessful aging."

Successful ageing was defined as including an absence of disability, depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment, respiratory symptoms, and chronic diseases including cancer, coronary ar tery disease, andstroke. "Out of all the variables that we looked at, fiber intake -- whichis a type of carbohydrate that the body can't digest -- had the strongestinfluence," said lead author Bamini Gopinath, Associate Professor atThe Westmead Institute for Medical Research in Australia. The findings were published in the journal The Journals of Gerontol-ogy, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences. "Essen-tially, we found that those who had the highest intake of fiber or totalfiber actually had an almost 80 percent greater likelihood of living along and healthy life over a 10-year follow-up. That is, they were lesslikely to suffer from hyper tension, diabetes, dementia, depression, and functional disability," she explained.

Shift work could lead tomore severe strokesNEW YORK, (IANS) Punching in for graveyard or rotating shiftscan disrupt the body clock and put you at increased risk ofsevere ischemic strokes, which occur when blood flow is cutoff to par t of the brain, warns a study. "This research hasclear implications for shift workers with odd schedules, butprobably extends to many of us who keep schedules that dif-fer greatly from day-to-day, especially from weekdays toweekends," said one of the researchers David Earnest, Pro-fessor at Texas A&M Health Science Centre College of Medi-cine in the US."These irregular schedules can produce what is known as'social jet lag', which similarly unwinds our body clocks sothat they no longer keep accurate time, and thus can lead tothe same effects on human health as shift work," Earnestnoted.According to Earnest, it is not the longer hours -- or the weirdhours -- necessarily that is the problem. Instead, it is thechange in the timing of waking, sleeping and eating every fewdays that "unwinds" our body clocks and makes it difficult forthem to maintain their natural, 24-hour cycle.

Wearing deodorants canmake men more masculineLONDON, (IANS) Want to appear more masculine? Wear adeodorant, says a new study suggesting that men whoare perceived low in masculinity can significantlyincrease their standing by applying deodorant. Thefindings showed that females are more sensitive orattentive to odour cues than males.Men who were low in face masculinity significantlyincreased their odour masculinity by applying a deodor-ant. However, for men who already had high levels ofmasculinity, wearing deodorant did not show an in-crease after deodorant application. "This means thatmen are able to use deodorant to ar tificially raise theirgame so to speak, levelling the playing field by makingthemselves comparable, at least as far as odour isconcerned, to more masculine men," said CarolineAllen, researcher at University of Stirling in Britain. Also, all women who were wearing deodorant were ratedas more feminine smelling by men compared to whenthey had no deodorant on. "Our study found that whenwomen apply a deodorant it does increase their ratedbody odour femininity," Allen added. For the study, published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, the team analysed 130 female and male par ticipantswho rated facial masculinity and femininity usingphotographs. Fur ther, 239 men and women also ratedodour samples of 40 opposite sex individuals.

Treat sunspot with oatmeal, cider vinegarNEW DELHI, (IANS) There are times when flat brown spotsshow up on some par ts of the skin that have been exposedto the sun. Use cider vinegar or oatmeal to treat sun-spots, says an exper t. Seema Malik, a skin and cos-metic surgeon, shares a few tips:* Place a cool compress on spotted skin.* Take a cool shower or bath.* Add one cup of cider vinegar to a bath to help balancethe pH (acid or alkalinity) of spotted skin, and promotehealing.* Soak in an oatmeal bath. This is especially helpful foritchy sunburned skin.* Use lotions that contain aloe vera to soothe andmoisturize skin.* Apply cool, not cold milk with a clean cloth to yourskin. SMOKING WEED UPS RISKOF TOOTH LOSSNEW YORK, (IANS) Smoking marijuana for a long timecan put you at increased risk of gum diseases that canlead to tooth loss, says a study that found no otherserious adverse physical effects of pot-smoking. Thestudy tracked nearly 1,000 New Zealanders from bir th toage 38.Tobacco users in the study were found to have gumdisease as well as reduced lung function, systemicinflammation and indicators of poorer metabolic health."We can see the physical health effects of tobaccosmoking in this study, but we don't see similar effectsfor cannabis smoking," said Madeline Meier, AssistantProfessor of Psychology at Arizona State University inthe US.The international research team assessed a dozenmeasures of physical health, including lung function, systemic inflammation and several measures of meta-bolic syndrome, including waist circumference, HDLcholesterol (good cholesterol), triglycerides, bloodpressure, glucose control and body mass index. To measure cannabis use, the researchers asked studypar ticipants to self-repor t their use at ages 18, 21, 26,32 and 38. While study par ticipants who had usedmarijuana to some degree over the last 20 years showedan increase in gum disease from age 26 to 38, they didnot differ from non-users on any of the other physicalhealth measures."We need to recognise that heavy recreational cannabisuse does have some adverse consequences, but overalldamage to physical health is not apparent in this study,"study co-author Avshalom Caspi, Professor at DukeUniversity in Durham, said.

NEW DELHI, (IANS) As the mercury continues to soar in the capital, foodaficionados can now indulge in fruity delights with a specially crafted menuboasting of savoury desserts and coolers that aim to "encourage healthyeating". Curated by chef Namrata Sanwal of luxury boutique hotel The Park, the menu boasts of delicious desserts like the Honey and Melon Parafait,Jamun Brule and Litchi Mousse among others. The desserts will be finalised and will be included in the menu of Cha Barcafe here by next month. If you are looking to incorporate summer fruits intoyour diet in a novel way, then this menu is something that you should try.Containing egg yolk, caster sugar, whipped cream, honey and melon, theHoney and Melon Parafait is an incredible dessert to indulge in 40 degree-plus heat. If you are a jamun (Indian blackberry) lover, then the Jamun Brule-- which is made using fresh jamuns, egg yolk, milk, cream and caster sugar-- is an apt dessert to have after an afternoon meal. "The concept is to not onlyencourage healthy eating but also to create desserts that are not very heavy. You don't want to feel sleepy, heavy or lethargic (after having the desserts),"Sanwal told IANS."We have desserts for each person. Someone who likes a particular type ofdessert, for example cheesecake, he or she can go for it," she added. Askedabout the preparation for the Honey and Melon Parafait, Sanwal said that it isakin to a mousse, but slightly heavier."It is like a mousse, but heavier. There are no egg whites in it. In the Parafait,we basically add eggs that are cooked in a double boiler with a sugarsyrup," she said. But it is not only the desser ts that are wor th one'sattention. Cha Bar has also introduced special summer drinks like JalJeera, Green Apple Soda, Pink Lemonade, Japanese Matcha Shakeand, most interestingly, the Sattu Cooler. Sattu is a type of flour, whichconsists of a mixture of ground pulses and cereals.
