Stop and smell the flowers

Spring seems to have sprung up around us so much so that it’s actually turned intosummer. And like so many summers before this one, the Memorial Day weekend

really serves as the signal for the beginning of the summer season. This year’s holidaycelebration seems to have gone off pretty much the way it always does — we had anattempted bank robbery on Friday, winds gusting to 40 knots on Saturday, blistering (atleast by Nantucket standards) heat on Sunday, and smoke from Canadian wildfiresenveloping the island on Monday. So yeah, all in all, a pretty typical Memorial Dayweekend on Nantucket.

Yours truly sailed in the oft-maligned Figawi, despite the fact that I’d been nursinga bad back all week. We had a good race, finishing fourth in our division despite thefact that our first mark rounding was anything but good. But I’m not here to gloat aboutour finish position, but rather to talk about the cause of my bad back.

You see, kids, the weekend before Memorial Day weekend found me working in theyard. Digging up areas for flower beds, shoveling mulch, cutting down dead trees, thatsort of thing. Every so often, I get in one of those moods when I just start landscaping,and those moods strike so seldom that I like to do as much as I can when they hit.

One of the chores I assigned myself on the weekend in question was the removal ofa small tree that was growing in what is otherwise a bed of hydrangeas. “Tree” is per-haps an optimistic term; “sapling” might be a more apropos title. Regardless of whatwe’re going to call it, though, it required being dug up and then extricated from theground, roots and all.

So I dug, and dug, and dug some more. I had the roots exposed, so I thought that itwas about time to start yanking the thing out by hand. So I started pulling. Nothingmoved. I pulled harder, but still nothing moved. So I really put my back into it andyanked for all I was worth. Just as I felt the roots giving way underneath the dirt, I alsofelt something give way in my back. Fortunately enough, my back ended up faring bet-ter than the tree, but it did take a little rest and relaxation for me to get it back into sail-ing condition.

This whole experience taught me a couple of valuable lessons. First off, lift with yourlegs. That’s lesson number one, but it’s not even remotely tangentially related to realestate. So let’s move quickly to lesson number two, which took a little time to get pastthe blinding pain in my back to really sink into my brain. Lesson two is that landscap-ing makes your property look better, and the better the landscaping, the better lookingyour property.

There’s no doubt about it that bushes of flowers and winding paths through beauti-ful gardens create something amazing. It doesn’t matter if it’s randomly scattered wild-flowers we’re talking about or some heirloom rosebush that once belonged to yourgrandmother. Regardless of the actual genus and species of the plants in question, theflowers really do add a great deal to the attractiveness of the property.

It’s not just flowers that can make your yard look that much better. Green grass —organically fertilized, of course — is a no-brainer. And mowed grass is even moreattractive. Throw in some trees here and there, maybe a bush or two, and you’ve gotyourself a full-fledge lawn worthy of all the neighbors’ envy, not to mention a healthylittle bump to the overall worth of your property.

Keep in mind, though, that it’s not quite as simple as just throwing some seeds in theground and staring intently at them until they produce beautiful flowers. There’s much,much more to the whole process, which starts with nurturing the soil to create a viablebed to planning the plantings to take advantage of natural lighting conditions andchanging seasons to a host of other considerations. And all of that brings us to valuablelesson number three in this whole thing: Hire somebody who knows what they’re doingto do it.

On Nantucket, we’re blessed with an abundance of very talented and very knowl-edgeable landscapers who can help even the most black-thumbed amongst us createbeauty with plants. It doesn’t matter how modest the yard size or how abysmal youmight think your growing conditions are. These men and women can create and imple-ment a plan that takes into consideration all of the natural conditions afforded by yourspecific piece of land. So give one of them a call and watch them work their magic. It’samazing to see what they can create if you give them half a chance. Both the landscap-ers and your back will appreciate your willingness to let them do the job for you.
