NEWS REPORT

businessman George Wendall Macy, highly decorated

Brevet Major General George Nelson Macy grew up in

this house before moving to Boston in 1855 after gradu-

ating with honors from Nantucket High School.

According to Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PI:N),

The earliest known record of 123 Main, on the corner of

Main Street and Quartermile Hill, is on the 1834 Coffin

Map.

George W. Macy purchased the property from George

Clasby in 1842. At that time, it was just a simple box

shape with a borning room, dining room, living room,

three bedrooms, an attic and a basement. The house,

which Macy remodeled shortly after purchasing it, has

been owned by the Macy family ever since.

Today, the house is owned by Margaret “Tinka” Elliot

Knopf (George Wendell Macy’s great, great granddaugh-

ter), and her husband, Fernando Esteban.

A new look

It is unclear, however, whether Macy remodeled the

existing structure or started from scratch.

“According to oral history, once George W. Macy took

ownership, he completely remodeled the house,” said the

PI:N report. “A wall was removed to make the front par-

lor larger, and the Greek revival ornamentation that is

seen today was added. He expanded the dining room area

to its current size by moving the east wall about six feet,

moving the kitchen to the back addition, and moving the

front door to the right side corner as it exists today. A

two-story addition was also added to the rear of the

house, with one of the earliest indoor outhouses on

Nantucket. The basement was a full story tall with a sum-

mer kitchen and small room. The Greek revival decora-

tion on the outside was also added at this time.”

Although the building has not expanded in size, the

Macy’s have made several exterior alterations and addi-

tions. Originally, the front of the house was clapboard,

but by the 1880s, it had been shingled. The Macy’s added

a cupola sometime around 1870. PI:N believes that when

the back wing was built onto the house, the middle chim-

ney in dining room was taken out. The kitchen, which

had been moved into the existing first floor bathroom,

was gutted in 1992 as part of its renovation.

The narrow, comparatively smaller Main Street home

is rather inconspicuous amongst neighboring larger ones

just beyond the Civil War monument.

The cupola might grab your attention if the Gothic

window on the south side of the addition’s second floor

doesn’t. If totally oblivious, recalling the former 19th

century celebrity who lived in this house might give one

pause to ponder the history of the house’s inhabitants

before ambling up the remainder of Main Street.

War hero

Born in 1837, George W. Macy’s son, George Nelson

Macy, who spent his childhood at 123 Main, moved to

Boston in 1855.

“He was employed by the merchant banking firm of

Warren & Osborn on State Street, where he soon made

friends with several promising young men, mostly

Harvard graduates, who belonged to Boston's prestigious

old militia company, the New England Guards,” Mooney

cited in his article, “Nantucket Hero: General George

Nelson Macy” in the summer 2003 issue of Historic

Nantucket.

“With the advent of the Civil War, they readily accept-

ed young Macy and together they volunteered for the

Union army in, as it was called, the Harvard Regiment.”

This (Macy’s entrance into the Civil War) happened at

its beginning early in 1861 and when it was over, Macy

would be known for his bravery and distinguished serv-

ice having fought in every battle from Balls Bluff to

Appomattox sustaining three injuries fighting in the

Army of the Potomac, a Union Army military force cre-

ated to take Richmond, VA. from the Confederates.

Macy was given command of 750 soldiers in

Company I of the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

“One of the duties of a junior officer was

recruiting, and Macy was an excellent

recruiting officer,” said Mooney.

“Going home for a weekend, he

left with 23 Nantucket men in

tow. Then, he stopped at

Martha's Vineyard and

picked up five more. In

those days, part of the

appeal of the volunteer

army was the chance to

serve with one's friends

and neighbors. As the

islanders eagerly joined

Company I, the company

included about 60 island

volunteers, thanks to Macy.”

Macy first led Company I

as a lieutenant, but was promot-

ed to captain after he saved much

of his regiment at Balls Bluff near

Leesburg on Oct. 21, 1861 when, sur-

rounded by Confederate soldiers 75 feet above

the Potomac River, he swam across it to find boats for his

surviving men to escape in.

According to Mooney, accolades and ascension

through the ranks followed after several more battles,

including Macy’s and Company I’s involvement in

General Ambrose Burnside’s advance on downtown

Fredericksburg in December 1862, in which he lost 40

men in addition to seven assaults up Marye's Heights out-

side of town where seven Nantucket Union soldiers were

killed.

On July 3, 1863, Macy and Company I of the

Massachusetts 20th Regiment were at Gettysburg when,

after Colonel Paul J. Revere was killed, Macy led both

regiments against Major General George E. Pickett’s

Charge on Cemetery Ridge, the final battle at Gettysburg

on July 3, 1863.

During this fight, a minié ball — a cone-shaped bullet

hollow at its bottom — splintered Macy’s left hand forc-

ing the amputation of his left arm. Undaunted with an

artificial arm attached to his shoulder after convalescence

in Boston and, after promotion to full colonel, Macy re-

entered the war in the Wilderness where, on May 6, 1864,

Mooney said he was “ordered to lead a charge to save the

Union line of defense. Charging up the Orange Plank

Road, he was shot in both

legs, but survived.”

That August, having recov-

ered from his injuries, Macy

fought in the battle of Deep Bottom

during the Siege of Petersburg

where, leading a charge on horseback,

his mount fell on him after being shot and,

shortly after getting up, Macy passed out cold.

He made brevet brigadier general for his leadership in the

latter two battles, eventually gaining the rank of brevet

major general from General Ulysses S. Grant.

The Macy tradition lives

After the war, Macy worked as an officer at Suffolk

Bank in Boston. He and his wife, Mary Macy Hayden,

raised three daughters; Mary Macy, Louisa Macy and

Alice Macy. It is through Alice that Tinka Knopf is

related to the General. Alice married Elliot Walker in

1890. Their daughter, Margaret Elliot Walker married

Stacy Knopf in 1932 and Margaret “Tinka” Elliot

Knopf was born on Sept. 22, 1937.

Tinka and her husband, Fernando, have maintained

General Macy’s home as it was built and for the most

part, kept intact its interior right down to oil lamps on

its walls and its interesting Gothic window, according

to PI:N. The house at 123 Main St. has been in the

Macy family for five generations and Tinka is the 13th

generation of Macy’s to live on Nantucket.

As no memorial exists for George Nelson Macy on

Nantucket, to remember him, you’ll have to go check

out the house or read Mooney’s article and the PI:N

survey for these reports will surely chisel 123 Main St.

into your soul.

may have seen his funky pickup truck with its wooden red and

yellow rack, and a ladder strapped onto it with a pair of rub-

ber boots fashioned as the ladder’s feet.

A faded fedora covers tight salt-and-pepper curls that ring

a freckled face, constantly adorned with a grin and smiling

eyes. For Oates, every new day brings new adventures.

Enigmatic to say the least, and certainly eccentric — he

recently went off island for the first time in more than five

years to go to the Boston Apple Store — and, you will not find

a more positive person on Nantucket. Matt has a sleep-when-

I’m-dead attitude toward life, a guiding light during his sea-

sonal carpentry/dishwasher/travel years and a star he still fol-

lows today.

“I love what I’m doing,” said Oates. “I’m happy in my

place. New and fun things happen all the time. I don’t think if

I was 34 that I’d be as happy as I am now. It helps me in what

I do — all those years of experience.”

Oates, 50, arrived on Nantucket in 1984 and worked as a

dishwasher at the Atlantic Café for owners Bill Fish and Billy

Hunter. Over the years, he has made the rounds working at

many of the island’s restaurants.

“You don’t necessarily have to be the most presentable per-

son on the planet, you just have to do a good job,” he said.

“And if you’re a good dishwasher, nobody bothers you. It’s

great. You can sing and like, be happy washing dishes. I did

that for years and years and years.”

Dishwashing and carpentry earnings saved during the win-

ters allowed globetrotting during the summers. Favoring Asia,

he eventually alighted on Japan where his high school English

teaching gave Matt enough happiness to consider living out his

life there as a teacher.

But, after moving to the island permanently in 1991, Matt

happily returned to small carpentry projects, working in island

restaurants and, in his spare time, such as it is, making treas-

ures out of other people’s trash. If you were to poke around

Matt’s house, you’d learn that he built it over eight years from

recycled building materials, framing, fixtures, windows and

other used house parts and accessories while living in the base-

ment and building up.

Stand and stare, probably dumbfounded, across Hummock

Pond Road at the imaginative breadth of sculptures Oates fash-

ions from whatever he finds at the Take It or Leave it and else-

where to get a glimpse at his homespun genius.

Learning from his brothers, fireman father and fire buddies

who all built additions, garages and other small projects

together for extra cash, Oates adapted well to Nantucket

where, he says, “you’re either a carpenter, a painter or a land-

scaper. The three big hires.”

His innate need to not throw anything away and to fix

everything broken most likely comes from his parents, who

grew up during the Depression. When Matt was a child, his

mother kept a jar of buttons. When a shirt could no longer be

repaired, she cut off the buttons, put them in the jar and used

the shirt as a rag.

“The more I think about, I was raised that way,” he said.

“My father fixed things. People in the neighborhood fixed

things.”

Realizing now that it was a generational thing, Matt recalls

a retired postal worker next door fixing an outboard motor

(even though he didn’t own a boat) just because it was broken.

Now, in his generation, Oates finds new purpose for whatever

he pulls out the trash, whatever breaks down, building it up

again and, lately, re-tasking it to embody physical representa-

tions of the six major emotions humans experience.

“There are two forms of sculpture in front of my house,” he

said. “The first is junk — seemingly unrelated

things that I try to put together and paint and

make into something else. And, that’s the

emotion of whimsy. The spinning wheels —

the light reflects off the old CDs that I get

from the Take It or Leave It. It creates color.

It’s the emotion of wonder.”

There’s also a booth with a sign above

that reads: “Advice, 5¢” from the Peanuts

cartoon, a project Oates said teased the

emotion of people daring enough to almost

stop to ask for advice from the “crazy guy

by the side of the road.” And then, there

was his coffeemaker’s tale project to bring

out emotions in other people.

Oates’ latest is his Lost Dog project, the

emotion of living in the world. He built a lime

green and fuchsia plastic and metal dog, then

left the faux canine tied up outside at the air-

port, Nalu, the Bean, Nantucket Bookworks

and finally, Pacific National Bank where, after two days, the

bank manager called Nantucket Safe Harbor for Pets to report

a lost dog tied up to the front stair railing for two days.

“She (the bank manager) never tells them that it was a

sculpture, and they were like ‘you gotta bring that dog down

here!” he said. “So she took the sculpture, put it in her car, and

drove it to the MSPCA. Last week, I put up lost dog posters

thinking that was the end of that project, only to find out that

they have it down in the lost dog part of the kennel.”

There’s no need to question Matt’s motives, wonder aloud

in his presence about his happiness or question his station in

life. There’s really no need at all. Just introduce yourself some-

time and you’ll understand.

“I could be — instead of making something out of a broken

vacuum cleaner — out somewhere drinking a beer or listening

to my records or watching an old movie,” said Oates. “I like

doing that. I’m happy doing that. I love doing that, or, building

a birdhouse. I spend a lot of time building birdhouses.

“I’ll put it to you this way. When I’m sucking in my last

breath, the last thought I’m going to have isn’t going to be,

“Gee, I should’ve taken more naps.” You know? Do stuff. Find

what you love and do it!”

Matt Oates: “The spinning wheels — the light reflects off the old CDsthat I get from the Take It or Leave It. It creates color. It’s the emotionof wonder.”

The Nantucket Islands Land Bank gained $74,000

in transfer tax fees for the week ending May 11. To

date in the year 2012, the Land Bank gained an esti-

mated total of $3,366,020.27 in transfer fees.

Land Bank income is derived mostly from the collection of a

two-percent transfer tax on real estate transactions, subject to

certain exemptions. The Land Bank acquires, holds, and man-

ages land for open space and recreation on Nantucket. Other

revenue sources include investments, private contributions,

leasing of properties at 2 Massasoit Bridge Road, 159

Hummock Pond Road, and 22 Broad St.

Many of the property transfers recorded with the Land Bank

are exempt from the 2-percent transfer fee using one of 13

exemptions allowed by the Land Bank Act as follows: A; trans-

fer to government entity, B; transfer which, without additional

consideration, confirms, corrects, modifies, or supplements a

previously made transfer, C; transfer made as a gift without con-

sideration, D; certain transfers to and from a trust, E; transfer via

death or bankruptcy, F; transfer made in partition of land and

improvements, G; transfer to charitable organizations, H; trans-

fer to a mortgagee in foreclosure of the mortgage, I; certain

transfers made to or within a corporation or partnership, J; cer-

tain transfers out of a corporation or partnership, K; transfer due

to divorce, L; transfer of property that is partially personal prop-

erty and partially real property, M; certain first-time property

buyers (applies to the first $400,000).

The above explanations are abbreviated because the lan-

guage explaining these exemptions is too lengthy to print in this

section every week. If you’re curious about a certain exemption,

go to the Nantucket Islands Land Bank Web site for complete

information on the exemptions and the land bank’s governing

bylaws: www.nantucketlandbank.org. Or visit the office at 22

Broad. You can reach the Land Bank at 508-228-7240.
