Changing for the Better
In the world of the overly-educated writers, we throw around a lot of terms that many of don’t actually knowthe definitions for. But one term we do use periodically that I happen to know the meaning of is the word
meta. When something qualifies as a meta, it’s typically a situation where a signifier is referring back to theoriginal signifier which in the first instance signified it. I hated literary theory, too. What it means in basic lan-guage is that it’s something that’s about itself. Think of a story where you have a character telling the story ofthe story itself. It’s confusing I know, but that’s what meta means. Let me give you another example.The pieceyou’re about to read is, in fact, a meta column. More on that in a second.
For those of you who’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing yours truly’s presence for more than aboutthirty-five seconds, let me clue you in on a little tid-bit about the enigma wrapped in a riddle inside a mysterythat is Andrew Spencer: I’m a big-time college sports fan, specifically sports related to the Texas Longhorns.It’s part culture, as I grew up in Texas, and part allegiance, as I went to the University of Texas.
Now, for those of you who haven’t been paying attention to the recent media reports – and this is for thoseof you that know me as well as for those who don’t – the Big 12, which is the NCAA conference that includes,among other schools, the University of Texas, is basically at the end of its existence.The University of Coloradohas already jumped ship and moved to the Pac-10, and the University of Nebraska has decided to go aheadand commit a form of honorary hari-kari by moving themselves to the Big 10. Most of the reports say thatTexas will be following Colorado to the Pac-10.
In other words, there’s fixin’ to be a big ol’ change in these here parts. At least in these here parts that includeTexas college sports.
Stop right there. You see, kids, I wrote this column early, which isn’t my usual style. When I wrote it, the Big 12 wason its death bed and Texas was all but signed and delivered to the Pac-10. But then a funny thing happened on the wayto that ending. Some big wig comes in and saves the Big 12, such as it is, and keeps Texas as part of the conference.That’swhat I get for writing my column early, but I digress. Keep reading now.
People that graduate from the University of Texas (or just The University, as we Texas Exes are fond of call-ing it) have something of a dislike of change. Actually, dislike is the wrong word. Passionate hatred might cap-ture the essence a little more closely. Think of the average Nantucketer’s view of change, then inject it withhuman growth hormone. At that point, you’re about halfway there.
Given that information, it’s probably a safe assumption that I’m against the whole idea of switching confer-ences. But then there’s that whole saying about assuming making an ass out of you and some guy named Ming(whose last name is most assuredly not Tsai, not to worry Ming). In other words, I’m throwing my support110% behind the move, because we never give anything less than 110% where I come from.
The thing about this change is that it’s beneficial for everyone involved.The competition level is better, thenational exposure is better, the weather is better (seriously…would you rather go to some place called Stillwater,Oklahoma, or southern California?), the list goes on.
Now see, here I shot myself in the foot, because I jinxed the whole thing. Now I’m stuck going to Stillwater instead ofL.A. Or perhaps I can go to that hotbed of higher intelligence known as College Station, God help me. But anyway, noneof it matters now, because there’s going to be no change in the conference.
And while this whole change-for-the-better thing reminds me, to some degree, of fishing – after all, oldhabits die hard – I’m thinking it’s also got a lot to tell us about real estate and home ownership, don’t you think?
The fact of the matter is that change can be a good thing when it comes to your home. And it doesn’t haveto be anything drastically expensive or earth-shatteringly complex. It’s amazing to me how simple somethingas a change of paint color on a wall or just moving the artwork around on the walls can improve the overallexperience of being in a room, which in turn puts you in a better mood, at which point we all win. Additionally,even little changes can improve the value of your home,which, in the event you’re in the market to sell, is alwaysa good thing.
And those are things you can actually do yourself. And trust me when I say that, because I’ve done it myown self. And given that I’m quite possibly the least adept human being in the history of humankind when itcomes to doing things like home improvement, if I can do it, it’s certified by every certifying organizationaround that anybody can do it.
Of course, if you want to do something big – redoing the kitchen, adding a room, just knocking the wholething down and starting over from scratch – there’s nobody that’s going to tell you not to. I might suggest twothings to you, however: One, hire somebody else to do it for you, specifically somebody who knows how to dosuch things. We’ve got a ton of people out here who are exceptionally skilled at what they do, so let them do itfor you. Two, don’t hire me, just in case that’s not an already obvious point by now.
The other thing about our little island is that we’re blessed with an abundance of skilled people who not onlycan do the job for you, but who can also help you out if you’ve got that do-it-yourself bug. I’ve asked questionsat the Marine Home Center paint counter that most six-year-olds could have probably answered, but the peo-ple there have always been nothing but professional and kind in answering them. And then there was thattime it took me six different tries to get the right piece of wood from the maze of stacks in the lumberarea, but again, the guy on duty was the picture of patience in dealing with the idiot who didn’t know thedifference between pressure-treated pine and heirloom-quality mahogany.
Change can be a good thing, even in the rarified environs of Austin, Texas, and Nantucket,Massachusetts. Whether it’s abandoning traditions or adding new ones, there’s always the potential forsomething good to come out of even a small change. Give it a chance and see what it can do for you.
So wait a minute. I haven’t explained the meta part of this thing yet. Well, the way it all shook out wasthat Don allowed me to change the column after it had been announced that Big 12 wasn’t going to diea rapid death. So you see what I did there? It’s a column about change that I was allowed to change. Andto my mind, that change made the whole column better, don’t you think? So the column itself illustratesthe point that the column was trying to make about change. I feel so much better now.

In the Fall, Kate plans to take the addi-tional 75 hours needed for full licensure. By the Spring2011, Kate plans to have her full license. After that, sheplans to receive her SRA designation from theAppraisal Institute. This requires more education, athesis and master's level courses. Meanwhile, Kate con-tinues to practice real estate, maintain herMassachusetts Broker’s license, and membership in theCCIAOR, MAR and NAR.
Governor Deval Patrick has appointed Susan BennettWitte, owner/broker of Bennett Witte Real Estate, as aCommissioner to the Commonwealth’s Board ofRegistration for Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons.Bennett Witte was appointed and sworn in this pastDecember. Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did they teach you?My grandfather, Skipper, for sure. He has taught me that material items are notnearly as important as your experiences. He has also instilled in me a love for thewater. Not to mention, he is the best storyteller you will ever hear.
If you had a crystal ball that could tell you the truth about any one thing you wished toknow about yourself, life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know?I would choose not to look in the crystal ball. Life is full of surprises, might as well wait for them…
How would you spend your ideal day?At Great Point with family and friends in September — by far the best time of year!
Who would you choose to be shipwrecked on a desert island with?For sure, my wife Julie. (Although I think I would drive her nuts!)
If you could re-live a day of your life again,which would it be and why?I wouldn't want to re-live a day. I've already had thatexperience and love new experiences.
What was the first house you bought, and why?My current home. I loved the location and the property — the house was a bonus!
What is your favorite benefit to living year-round on Nantucket?The people, the fishing, my commute, the open spaces, the ocean. I could go on and on…
What is your favorite beach on Island?Definitely, Great Point.You have access to the ocean and sound, there is some of the best surf-fishing in the world, and you can have it to yourself!
What is your Favorite Walk?I love to take my dog, Bass, to Sanford Farm, but the Cranberry Bogs in the fall are a very special place. The south shore beaches in the winter are also pretty spectacular.
What is your Favorite Island Meal? Scallops on opening day of the season — a total treat!
What do you do on a day off?Bring my boat to Esther Island with family and friends. It doesn’t get much better than that.
What do you do on a lunch break?Sneak out for a quick fish — shhh...
How do you help a buyer celebrate their new purchase?Take them fishing!
Cam grew up in New Canaan, Connecticut, and has been a long-time Nantucket resident. After graduatingfrom St. George's and Colby College he worked for several years for Vineyard Vines, most recently as the director of Retail Sales. In addition to working in real estate, Capt. Cam has been running fishing charters onNantucket for more than a decade. Five years ago he combined his connection with the fishing communityand his sales background and purchased Bill Fisher Tackle with a few partners. Cam is also a hockey coachfor Nantucket youth hockey, on the board of many charitable fishing tournaments and involved with theNantucket Conservation Foundation.When he isn't in the office, at the rink or on a boat, you can find Camwith his wife of five years, Julie Milligan Gammill, and their dog, Bass. Julie and Cam met on Nantucketalmost ten years ago and are the proud new parents of daughter, Neely.
