As do so many of us, Blair

Perkins credits his moth-

er with making him the man

he is today. “My mother was

one of the original landscapers

on Nantucket,” he explained

to me recently during a rainy

morning. “We lived on a farm

in Maine and I got really into

the natural surroundings in the

area at a young age.”

And by “young age,” Blair

isn’t kidding. At the age of

four, Blair and is family

packed up the farm and moved

it to what he described as “a

sleepy little town” that sat 30

miles off the coast of Cape

Cod. There, his mother built

her landscaping business, and

many of today’s horticulture

experts join Blair in crediting

his mother with fostering their

love of nature.

Blair started school on

Nantucket, and when he was a

student at Cyrus Pierce, he

was witness to what would

become the defining moment

in his professional life. “A

dead finback whale washed up

on the beach,” he said, “and

my mother took me down to

see it. That triggered a love for

whales.”

Though it was some time in

coming, that love for whales

would grow into a passion that

CONVERSATIONS

If time is the great leveler,

water is its caffeine.

At St. Paul’s Episcopal

Church at 20 Fair Street, it is

rainwater, not Lucifer, that’s

attacking this 109-year-old

stone building. It is the reason why the

church recently repaired its slate roof

around the bell tower, and its 11 stained

glass windows on the north and south sides

of the main hall with $155,900 in grants

from the Community Preservation

Committee.

“When we started working on the proj-

ect, we discovered that the problems with

the windows was the leaky roof,” said

Curtis Barnes, a member of St. Paul’s

building committee. “There is a

part where the roof comes down

(to meet the bell tower on the

southwest corner of the roof)

called a cricket to divert the water

(around the tower structure and

down the sides of the roof plain).

“What we found — or what Jim Lydon

found — was that it had been installed or

repaired many years ago incorrectly, so

instead of diverting the water, it actually

allowed the water to come in.”

To look at St. Paul’s Church, described

by the Historic American Building Survey

as “a unique example of Romanesque

architecture, standing among the typical

August 11~25 • Nantucket Property News • 11

shingled houses, which characterize Nantucket

Island,” it is hard to imagine any of nature’s elements,

even during island winters, damaging this building. Its

cornerstone set in September 1901, the church was

built of rough-hewn granite blocks and brownstone,

and was completed and consecrated in June 1902.

Inside, dark-stained oak pews, beams and trusses dom-

inate the main hall with Tiffany stained glass windows

at either end.

“Based on an early 4th century Christian church

design, there is a central high beamed-ceiling nave

with a semi-circular area at the east end for the altar,”

according to a history of St. Paul’s done by the church.

“There are clerestory windows high overhead admit-

ting light to the pews beneath.”

The church organ, described in St. Paul’s history as

“…a two-manual, tracker action Hutchins-Votey pipe

organ, is one of the finest examples of its time and part

of Caroline French’s great gift to St. Paul’s in 1902.”

A nearly timeless slate roof caps the church, and stained

glass windows on all four sides let soft, beautiful colored

light into its main hall, the sanctuary and the chapel.

Today’s building, designed by Connecticut architect

Joseph Northrop, is the second at 20 Fair St. and was built

as a gift to the island by summer resident Caroline Louisa

Williams French to honor her father, Jonathan French, a

Boston merchant. Barnes said that Northrop’s plans for St.

Paul’s third incarnation on Nantucket were also used to

build an identical church in Connecticut.

“It replaces a simple wood structure erected here in

1850,” said the history of St. Paul’s. “That building

replaced an earlier structure on Broad Street that was

destroyed in Nantucket’s Great Fire of July 13, 1846.

That fire site adjoins the Jared Coffin House and is

marked by a bronze plaque.”

Certainly the stone of this church will weather the

elements, but the wood frames of its windows and the

colored glass within them, no matter how solid they

appear from the outside, are only as resilient as the

exterior slate skin allows them to be.

The trouble began for the 11 stained glass windows

on the north and south sides of the church when the

cricket failed. Instead of diverting water down the east

and west sides of the bell tower, the poorly installed

cricket collected water, which, over time, seeped into

the roof and ran down to the window frames, rotting

them from the inside out.

Further accelerating the rot in one of these windows

was a repair job done on it a number of years ago in

which the carpenter used interior plywood in repairing

its frame. As the water and moisture buildup from the

malfunctioning cricket seeped down to the window

frame, it delaminated the plywood, which, with the

help of bugs finding their way into the frame, sped up

its rotting process, said Barnes.

Finding someone to fix the roof was easy for the

building committee because, as Barnes said, James

Lydon, Sons & Daughters is a master at installing and

repairing slate roofs and any kind of roof in general.

But repairing and restoring the stained glass windows

was another matter, and one he sought references for

from Trinity Church in Boston.

“First step was fix the roof, and that was Jim Lydon

and Wayne Morris the mason. Then, the actual frames

were done by Mason Cook, [owner of Westmill

Preservation of Halifax, Mass.],” said Barnes. “He’s

an internationally-known person and they focus on

historic structures. Roberto Rosa, from Serpentina

Stained and Leaded Glass of Needham, Mass., is the

firm that did the stained glass, and Mason and Roberto

work in tandem.”

After Lydon repaired the roof, Mason Cook

removed the windows to do his work, which included

cutting out the rotted wood from the frames, filling the

spaces with new pine (the original frame material),

and rebuilding one frame completely with new pine

because of the extent of the rot.

Cook made covers for all the windows and built mesh

vents into each frame to allow moisture to evaporate from

the window frames, ensuring their longevity.

While Cook repaired and restored the window

frames, Rosa did the same for the stained glass panes

originally crafted by now-defunct Connick Studios of

Boston, Mass. to depict “certain episodes in the life of

Christ with emphases on subjects related to sea and

water,” strengthening and in some cases, replacing the

leading holding the glass in place.

“I was told, but I can’t prove it, that some of these

windows where originally Tiffany’s and someone

wanted to do memorial windows, and we’re talking in

the 50s before our time, so they took the Tiffany win-

dows out and gave them away,” said Barnes. “A

Tiffany window today would be worth something like

a quarter of a million dollars.”

Rosa also repaired and restored the northernmost of

five lancet stained glass windows in the sanctuary, the

west end of the main hall overlooking the altar, which

sustained storm damage several years ago.

“Most of these windows were not as well protected

as the side windows,” said Barnes. “Roberto and his

assistant were up here refitting the protective glass and

repairing the leading in the windows. A few years ago

in a storm, a branch from one of these trees went

through that window (pointing at the far right, north-

ern window). When it was repaired, a little different

color came out.”

Funding for this project came from two CPC grants

obtained by St. Paul’s, one for $78,000 in fiscal year

2010 and the other for $77,900 in fiscal year 2011,

said parish treasurer Dual McIntyre.

Eventually, as a second phase of this project, Willett

Studios will repair and restore stained glass windows

in the chapel, attached to the south side of sanctuary,

and repair the basement windows. Also on the facili-

ties list is a plan to build an addition to the northwest

corner of the church to make its basement space hand-

icap accessible.

ing Nantucket business. “I was always around boats

on Nantucket,” Blair explained, “and the more time I

spent on the water, the more I realized that there was

so much more to Nantucket than just downtown and

shopping.” He wanted to show visitors the “other”

Nantucket “the natural beauty of the island and all the

wildlife that inhabited it” and he began by taking peo-

ple out surfcasting.

In his free time, he was usually rooting around in

the moors and ponds and other various ecosystems on

the island. He became something of an expert at iden-

tifying the local flora and fauna, and when James

“Skip” Lazell came to Nantucket to do research for a

book he was writing about the various creepy-crawlies

that called the island home, he was immediately

directed to then 13-year-old Blair Perkins to serve as

his guide. The result was This Broken Archipelago:

Cape Cod and the Islands’ Amphibians and Reptiles.

During his teen years, when he wasn’t catching

frogs, Blair also began the process of earning his cap-

tain’s license. After he earned it, he took people by

boat around the island on fishing trips and other

nature-themed excursions. Then, in 1999, Blair offi-

cially launched Shearwater Excursions, which he

named for a bird that spends the majority of its time

away from land, keeping company with the whales

that inhabit the waters offshore.

Today, Blair spends nine months of the year operat-

ing boat tours, taking customers out to see whales, sea

turtles, sharks and, of course, shearwaters. Because he

spends so much time on the water — when he’s not

operating whale watches and seal tours, Blair can

often be found shredding the surf off Nantucket’s

south shore — meterology was a necessary skill to

learn, and today there are many islanders who consult

him on the week’s weather before making their travel

plans.

“My customers’ comfort is my utmost concern,”

Blair said, “so I pay very close attention to the weath-

er.” If the seas look rough, Blair will cancel a trip and

sacrifice the income rather than put his passengers in a

position where they will be feeling less-than-comfort-

able on the boat.

Shearwater Excursions is a family affair, like so

many Nantucket businesses. His oldest son has his

captain’s license and he runs harbor and Nantucket

history tours for his father. His younger son is working

towards his captain’s license as he accompanies his

father on the Shearwater, working with his younger

sister. “That gives me the chance to really interact with

the passengers,” Blair said, “which I love to do. I love

to be able to explain to people what they’re seeing out

there. I especially love to interact with the kids. I love

to get down on their level and talk to them about

what’s out there.”

And lest we forget the real brains behind Blair’s

success, his wife runs the office for the business.

“She’s the most important part of the entire opera-

tion,” he said. “She schedules all the trips and keeps us

running smoothly.”

Whale watches and sea tours are the most popular

options Blair offers, with humpback, finback and

minke whales filling the spots for the most oft-sighted

whale species. But whale and seal watchers are often

in for a surprise when a pod of dolphins swims by or a

giant — and totally harmless — basking shark drifts

alongside. “We had a trip recently when we saw a

breaching great white shark about ten miles offshore,”

he recalls. “That was a first for me.”

Whale watch trips run through October 20, and last

six hours. Other trips are shorter duration, and Blair

offers private charters for groups who would like to set

their own itineraries. For more information and some

great photos of past trips, check out Blair’s website at

www.explorenantucket.com.

I always say that I admire people who can honestly

say that they do what they truly love for a living, and

Blair Perkins is high on that list of people. “This is

what I love to do,” he said with an air of certainty that

was beyond question. And it’s tough to argue with

him, given his ever-present smile when he talks about

his work.

DRIVING_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _NANTUCKET 101

Navigating Nantucket’s roadways in the middle of August can, at the very least, be a frustrating challenge. This challenge becomes compounded at the island’s major intersections when ‘mainland’ drivers, accustomed to being directed by traffic lights, are thrown into the mix.

To help you get where you’re going, here’s NPN’s quick course on some of the island’s busiest intersections.

FIVE CORNERS Where are you going today? Chances are you’ll have to go throughthis convoluted intermingling of roads:Atlantic Avenue, and Pleasantand York streets, five entrance roads altogether, to get there.Withno stoplights on Nantucket, drivers unaccustomed to plying inter-sections using the honor system of a la last-in-last-out, mess thingsup every time with a me-first mentality.

THE PROBLEMEverybody sitting there looking at each other wonderingwhose turn it is, vehicles backed up to Outdoor Power onPleasant and false starts faking everyone else out.

THE WORST-CASE SCENARIOAll five line leaders go all in at once or when drivers mistaken-ly think it’s their turn and cut each other off and or cause nearmisses.

DRIVER’S EDTake a second while sitting in line to watch the dynamic of thisjunction to see how people are getting through it and followtheir lead.As you pull up to the intersection, you go after theother vehicles have gone.Wait your turn.

THE MILESTONE ROTARYUnfortunately, those driving to the island via Sagamore and orBourne have just two chances to experience a rotary andbriefly absorb crucial skills; at the Bourne and Hyannis rotaries. Also regrettable is that when they arrive on Nantucket, whenthey encounter the Milestone Rotary, it is only really a halfrotary and can be very disorienting despite the DPW’s widen-ing of the rotary pavement by a two-foot shrinkage of the cen-ter several years ago.

THE PROBLEMSparks Avenue drivers held at a stop sign instead a yield there-by backing up that road, southbound Orange Street travelershaving free reign and cyclists trying to wend their way throughthe rotary.

THE WORST-CASE SCENARIOBikes, pedestrians and vehicles converge, all trying to getthrough it at once and when Orange Street southbound traf-fic runs in a steady stream to Old South Road.

DRIVER’S EDEven on this half-baked rotary, those on it still have the right ofway, so stay alert and keep an eye out for openings to get onit and for vehicles entering and exiting.

SPARKS, HOOPER & PLEASANT ROTARYThis intersection is probably the smoothest flowing of allthe problem crossroads on the island. Only when the linefrom the Milestone Rotary backs up is this intersection aheadache.

THE PROBLEMFlow interruptions from drivers entering the PacificNational Bank parking lot

THE WORST-CASE SCENARIODrivers charge onto the roundabout without observingand considering the activity at the other two entrancesand seeing what traffic is like on the roundabout itself.

DRIVER’S EDThose already on the roundabout have the right of way.

SPARKS - ATLANTIC - SURFSIDE - PROSPECTThree quarters of this intersection flows smoothly albeit at asnail’s pace during the summer. It’s one of two mid-island dis-tributors to Madaket and the Hummock Pond Road area.Theother quarter … not so much. No matter how many times acertain ilk of driver passes through this intersection comingeast down Prospect Street, they just can’t get through it with-out messing up the flow.

THE PROBLEMSparks Avenue backed up beyond the Boys & Girls Club, inter-lopers sneaking up Williams Lane to cut the westbound line onSparks,Vesper Lane cars entering the Surfside Road line, whichcan stretch back to the Elementary School field.

THE WORST-CASE SCENARIOOverconfident drivers coming from Prospect Street who, lackingisland driving skills other than that of a maligned traffic cop, stop inthe middle of the intersection and start directing traffic.

DRIVER’S EDOff set as it may be, this is still an intersection and as such, driv-ers should proceed through it as they would any other four-way on the island.

UNION AND FRANCIS STREETSHad voters at the 2011 Annual Town Meeting adopted Article92, the town could have purchased 50 Union St. and widenedthis extremely tight turn around which full-size tractor trailersstruggle. When the big rigs aren’t clogging things up, the inter-section itself is a guessing game for outbound drivers trying dis-cern inbound drivers’ intentions for either a right on FrancisStreet or continuing on Union Street.

THE PROBLEMTraffic backed up to the Town Annex Building on WashingtonStreet, Francis Street drivers languishing at the head of the lineat the mercy of inbound traffic and unwary cyclists caught inthe middle while bungling their hand signals.

THE WORST-CASE SCENARIOInbound drivers enter intersection without signaling. And whenFrancis Street backs up onto Washington.

DRIVER’S EDInbounders, when entering this intersection always use yourturn signal even if you’re staying straight on Union Street. Useyour left turn signal when going straight, continuing downUnion Street.Outbounders, go only when you see a clear open-ing, also using your turn signals. Because Tractor-trailers need toswing wide around this corner, if you see one coming and youcan do it, stop several car lengths from the stop sign.
