Bharati ' s 120th Birthday celebrations took placeat Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore was held in a grand manner. Vedam was chanted by Ganapadigal Venkatakrishnan and his students and the Vedaghosham were spiritually electrifying to the body and the soul.

Sri Krishna Chand Chordia spoke about his experiences with Kaviyogi. Swamy Omkarananda presided over the function and He released a book" Thirumandira Vilakkam". The book was written by Kaviyogi. The first copy was received by Senior Karnatic Musician Sri G.S.Mani.

Swami Omkarananda gave befitting explanations about Thirumandiram when compared with Sanskrit slokas. When Sri G. S.Mani met Kaviyogi only once at Madurai Kaviyogi had asked him to sing

some songs and he sang. Kaviyogi then blessed him. Mr.N.Rajasekaran, brother of ,,,, Mr.N.Chandrasekharan and Mr.Sreedhar, spoke about Bharatha Shakthi Maha Kaviyam which was written by Kaviyogi.

Dr.R.Ganesh (Disciple of Maharajapuram Sri.Santhanam) gave a wonderful concert, (with Bakthi Rasa) on Kaviyogi’s Compositions with Madurai S.Balasubramanian, on the Violin and Sethalapathy B.Ganapathyraman on

Mirudhangam.Ganesh started

his concert with T h i r u m o o l a r ’ s Virutham on Lord Ganesha, followed by an impressive "Karunaisevai Gajavathana" in Hamsathwani Raga, followed by a series of brisk kalpanaswaras in tandem with the accompanists. Next he rendered a Virutham on Suddhananda Bharathi and sung a soothing Bhowli, the song Karunakaranaana Gurunathan Varuginraan

in , MishraChapu .Then came the Alapana

of Aabheri, where Ganesh brought the full picture of the Raga with ease and was a delight to the ears. Followed by the evergreen Eppadi Padinaro, with good diction. The manodharma in Kalpanaswara was in line with the greatness of the krithi by placing it matching the names of Appar, Aaludaiyapillai , Sundararajan and Arumanivasakar.

Later Simmendra madhyamam came as

the Main Ragam. Ganesh gave the audience its various Dimensions with full vigour and bhava. His sruthi alignment was perfect throughout the concert. Kaviyogi’s song "Kanneduthakilum Kaneero" with Neraval and Kalpana kalpanaswaras was pleasing with good imagination. Madurai Balasubramanian on the Violin was like a shadow to Ganesh throughout the Concert. His Raga Alapana of Abheri was crisp and commendable and kalpana swaras were

befitting the singer's line of imagination. G a n a p a t h y r a m a n ’ s accompaniment was soft and supportive for the concert and thani avarthanam was brisk and pleasing. Later, T h e d i v e n t h e n u d a n , ( B i m p l a s ) A d u k i n r a n K a n n a n ( M a a n d u ) Krishna Krishna M u k u n t h a ( K a l y a n i ) were the popular songs of Kaviyogi popularised by Maharajapuram Sri Santhanam were rendered to give the concert a neat silky finish.

Ganesh has got the talent of assessing the audience pulse(which he would have got from his Guru) with his experience was evident, in the way he developed the concert. Finally, it was a very special evening at Ragasudha Hall to enjoy Dr.Ganesh with Madurai Balu and Ganapathyraman singing with total Bhakthi Bhava fitting the occasion.

Dr. R. Ganesh’s Wonderful concert at Kaviyogi Shuddhananda Bharati's 120th Birthday celebrations

– Writes Vishaal Sapuram

On Thursday, May 25th, under the auspices

of Madhuradhwani at Arkay Convention Centre, Mylapore, the legendary Chitravina N Ravikiran made a captivating scholarly presentation of a lesser-known facet of the mammoth saint-composer Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi - the earnest devotion and exalted erudition with which the world renowned Krishna devotee had composed on the entire Hindu pantheon including Shiva, Vinayaka, Subramanya, Devi but focussed this evening on Rama.

Ravikiran began by describing the gamut of Venkata Kavi’s works on Rama, including a full Ramayana opera - consisting of possibly over 100 songs, krtis on various Rama kshetras as well as associated krtis like Anjaneya Saptaratnas, and so on. Accompanied by his disciples Raghav (vocal) and Narayanan (keyboard), Ravikiran

proceeded to render Venkata Kavi’s tribute to sage Valmiki, ‘Vande Valmiki Kokilam’ (Athana) as the invocatory piece. He then introduced the main feature of the evening, a ragamalika masterpiece summarising the entire Ramayana (‘Sankshepa Ramayana’) that is set in five ragas (Nattai, Varali, Arabhi, Gaula, and Manirangu - very close to what we call the five ghana ragas today). This composition’s masterful, concise style could effectively convey each event of the story, in its full glory, with just minimal words. The pallavi, beginning with ‘Shree rama jayame jayam’, eloquently salutes the great epic, and then story itself is narrated over the first three charanams, each of which has two parts - normal and fast, covering two kandams each.

Interspersing song with explanation, Ravikiran introduced various aspects of Venkata Kavi’s immense scholarship. The

first charanam is focused on the Bala & Ayodhya Kandam and Ravikiran described Venkata Kavi’s poetic skill in narrating incidents like slaying a foe through various euphemisms like ‘sending Tataka to heaven with one arrow’ rather than using the word 'kill'. Similar sensitivity is shown in subsequent charanams, where vanquishing the pride of Parashurama, Kaikeyi’s distress, Sita’s abduction, and so on are given a positive spin extolling Rama's heroism that surmounts those challenges and misfortunes.

Ravikiran also drew attention to Venkata Kavi’s masterful word choice in various situations, such as the verbs used to narrate

Rama’s calm, selfless response to Kaikeyi’s politics. Similarly, the noble Bharata is beautifully described as the very synonym for truth - ‘sattiya neri enum bharatan’, and the first meeting with Hanuman effuses devotion with ‘kande vayam kondadu’. The third charanam continues in the same vein, with the slaying of Vali described as ‘mokshattaiye tandu’. Venkata Kavi’s precise use of Tamil vocabulary was noted in his description of Hanuman’s leap to Lanka as ‘taavi’, and the causeway built on the sea by the vanaras as anai rather than paalam.

The fourth charanam is entirely devoted to the pattabhishekam of Rama, with vivid imagery

reflecting extensive knowledge of Kamban’s Ramayana as well. Ravikiran proved these points by himself invoking the Kamba Ramayanam, through verses sung expressively by his disciple Raghav. The final charanam is a phala shruti, describing all the worldly and otherworldly benefits of experiencing the Ramayana. Here, Venkata Kavi makes a powerful, seemingly-paradoxical declaration ‘maa maayai idaik kettaal taanaaha poiyum’. The song ends with Venkata Kavi’s own name as his signature, a special feature occurring in only a select few of his compositions.

At each juncture of the story, Ravikiran brought into the discussion various other compositions of Venkata Kavi, delving deeper into the saint-composer’s knowledge and experience of Rama. ‘Gamana sundara raghava’ (Bhairavi) narrates a rare episode where Vishwamitra makes multiple disguised

attempts to touch the dust of Rama’s feet. Another composition, ‘Nadaiyai Paradi’ (Jhunjhooti), expresses wonder at the scene of Rama and Lakshmana accompanying Vishvamitra into the forest, at one point imagining Rama following the sage to be Murugan with his father Shiva, then refuting that by saying that Murugan does not have a younger brother, so it could not be him. ‘Mithiladhipa Suta Vallabham’ (Kambhodhi) focuses on Rama as the beloved of Sita, and ‘Raghukulottama Rama’ (Nagasvaravali) mentions Indra offering Rama his own chariot and charioteer during his deciding battle with Ravana.

All in all, the evening gave the audience a glimpse into the great mind and great heart of Venkata Kavi, enabling his noble thoughts and divine music to continue inspiring musicians and music-lovers into the future.

In t e r n a t i o n a l l y r e n o w n e d

Population expert and Founder of United Writers’ Association,

C h e v a l i e r D r . K . T h i a g a r a j a n has been selected for conferment of PRIDE OF ASIA AWARD, engraved Gold Medal, Robe of Honour and Mahavastram by MVLA Trust and Global Literacy

Summit which will be presented at Kathmandu during June 13 at the Global Literacy Summit

on “The art of teaching is the art of assisting Discovery”. The Award is conferred annually to leading educational czars who have epitamised furtherance of education as the primary cause in their avocation.

The Insignia accompanying the Award eulogises that the hallmark of Dr.Thiagarajan’s

Writings often lies in contextualizing the measures derived without compromising on the “conceptual soundness” often engaging in useful discussion of utilization of data envisaged.

The perfectly tailored sentences, neat and elegant phrases often devoid of strong Storylines all aptly accessoried made his writings always a connoisseur’s delight.

Rated as a strong campaigner for sustained social responsibility and feted for his

Clamouring call for consistent cultivation of human excellence and unleashing human Potential in all its myriad m a n i f e s t a t i o n s , Dr.Thiagarajan for over several decades made relentless forays in Demography and Social Anthropology and has eminently succeeded in juxtaposing the social, cultural and creative human development

against the backdrop of emerging cultural and social milieu – a subtle relationship that the dominant society idealises, yearns for and even romanticises but is often unable to practice.

For over five decades and in his extensive publications while delineating inextricable

Constellation of arcane characters, Dr.Thiagarajan often designed and enriched several

I n n u m e r a b l e programs for the marginalised poor, catalysing their growth including imparting

Of education for tribal boys and girls and vividly demonstrated what a duly elected democratic Government could indeed accomplish within the framework of proverbial excellence.

Several prestigious universities including Cornell, Michigan, Illinois, Hawaii, Texas, Tokyo,

P e n n s y l v a n i a and other academic organisations in Hungary, Nepal, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Bulgaria, Philadelphia, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Brazil have conferred several Sovereign Orders and honours to Dr.Thiagarajan which has been amply evidenced in his innumerable Writings and which perhaps partly explains his ubiquitous literary contributions devoted To literature and arts where there is a noticeable vacuum of enthusiasm and enlightened Encouragement.

Pride Of Asia Honour To Dr.K.Thiagarajan

In the era of social media, everyone loves to be

photographed– be it a casual selfie, pictures for facebook or instagram the word ‘say cheese’ is the new mantra in town. One can buy a pro camera gear to click great images , but only a qualified dentist can make the smile sparkle in that image. Gone are the days where people visit a dentist only during discomfort or pain. The following are some common recommendations for, be it an IT professional or a upcoming super model. Braces / Aligners:

Although orthodontic work begins while a child is growing to help produce optimal results, it doesn’t mean that adults can’t have braces. Thanks to advances in orthodontic treatments, metal brackets are not your only option. Removable aligners, or “invisible braces,” or clear plastic brackets can all be used to straighten crooked or crowded teeth and give the confidence you desire. Whitening:

When it comes to getting a whiter and brighter smile, there are a variety of teeth-whitening products you

can try. Your main options are in-office and at-home bleaching. Before starting any whitening treatment, you should speak with your dentist. Your dentist after examination will tell you what kind of whitening procedures will work best for you.Crowns:

A crown is a good way to cover a tooth that is discoloured or badly shaped. A crown can make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore the one that’s already broken. Dental Implants:

Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth. When surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. Titanium implants are

designed to hold restorations like the crowns or bridges that blend in with your other teeth, and are a long-term option for restoring your smile. With technology, their costing are coming down drastically. Talk to your dentist about implants before finalising other tooth replacement options. Bonding:

Not happy with the way your teeth look? Bonding may be the answer. For some, it can help restore the natural look of your teeth. Bonding is a process where the we attach or “bond” materials directly to your tooth. Your natural tooth enamel and dentin are fused together with bonding materials such as porcelain and resins to create a strong structure that looks great.Veneers: (smile designing):

This gives instant results. Veneers are thin shells made of tooth-colored porcelain designed to cover the front

side of teeth. Unlike bonding, it is necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your tooth to accommodate the shell. Based on a model of your mouth, they are meant to look like your natural teeth. Tom cruise and George cloony have veneers! Hmm hmm!Brushing & Flossing:

It may seem obvious, but brushing and flossing are the most important tools for keeping a healthy mouth. Brush twice and floss at least once a day to prevent cavities, and improve your oral health.Regular dental visits:

Something as simple as going to your dentist twice a year is one of the easiest things you can do to stay healthy. Apart from screening for cavities and oral diseases, doing routine cleaning by a professional is of utmost importance.

A portrait without a proper smile is like a DSLR camera without a memory card.Author :

In close continuation to our publication of an

article on “Kala Sevak” R. Ramachandran several readers wanted to know more about Mr. R. Ramachandran’s contribution in Eyal, Isai & Natak fields and due to popular demand Shri Sundar Ramachandran Secretary of Hamsadhwani and beloved son of RR was approached once again and he was kind enough to share the following details about his beloved father with this writer as follows:

“Hamsadhwani conducts every year a Purandaradasar day and presents a purse to a Teacher musician/scholar/ indigent artistes. RRC

initiated the presentation of Dramas about 15 years ago and based on Membership response and enthusiastic support this has become an Annual feature.

It was his pioneering initiative to celebrate the Centenary year of stalwart musicians and in mid 1990s when he put together a tribute to Nadaswaram Maestro T.N.Rajarathinam Pillai the then CM Kalaignar M.Karunanidhi presided and paid handsome tributes to RRC for organising the event on a grand scale.

RRC brought together many vidwans and vidushis for an Annual Thyagaraja Aradhana jointly with the Lions Club Inernational. On

one rare occasion he had the then Orissa CM Giridhar Gomang accompany Sudha Ragunathan's vocal concert at Hamsadhwani.RRC also started a Guru Sishya series when he had young students perform before their Guru

and the Guru honoured by Hamsadhwani.

The Annual Hindustani music series was part of the fare that he offered for different sections of music lovers.

Governors, Union

Ministers, Judges and many prominent citizens attended Hamsadhwani programmes and lauded the contribution of RRC and his hard work in promoting art and culture.

A rare occurrence of the audience with umbrellas listened to Bombay Jaishree when sudden rain disrupted her concert in the open air ambience and RRC ensured the concert went on because the members were all supportive and did not mind the discomfort” concluded Shri Sundar Ramachandran who is meticulously carrying on the rich legacy of his beloved father.
