Police are advising local schools to take extra precautionsand have security in place on campus following the kidnap casethat took place at Chettinad Vidyashram in R. A. Puram.

Police say that school managements must make sure thatsmall children are let out of campus only after properprocedures are adhered too and that caretakers, drivers andmaids be identified when they come to take the wards home.

Last week, city police cracked a case of kidnapping of a KGstudent who attends the R A Puram school.

CCTV footage from cameras placed on the campus showeda man picking up the small boy.

Police got cracking when the ‘missing’ case was reportedbut later it turned out to be a demand for ransom. Policetraced the boy in north Madras. Later, a gang involved in thecrime was nabbed but the main accused is on the run.

2013 CELEBRATIONS FROM AUGUST 18 to 25

My next two Sunday mornings will take meto an old and favourite destination -Fort St. George.

I have a date to keep with the 2013 edition of theMadras Week celebration.

For some years now, I have made sure that thepeople of this city who wish to explore its past and itsheritage have the pleasure of walking around this Fort.

Forts are small towns in themselves, with streetsand roads, living and working quarters, barracks andstores, ramparts and moats. And with some space forimagination and free spirit, these places can make avery interesting destination.

And Fort St George has all this and more, its walls, nooks and buildings bouncing off stories that need tobe retold.

A simple, free-wheeling walk around this campusby itself can be an enjoyable exercise.

Gazing at the cold cannons, taking in the Madras-terraced buildings, sitting inside St. Mary’s Church asthe pianist plays for a Sunday service, walking to theends of the many gates on all sides, walking up to theramparts to take in the environs and sighing at thedecaying, massive Kings Barracks that smells of stalerum. . . . .there is a lot to do inside this fort.

Thanks to the state government’s PublicDepartment, I am permitted to take guests in andmake the best in the two hours that we can spend herebefore the more enthusiastic walkers head to the FortMuseum, another place to discover at leisure.

Madras Week, which celebrates the founding ofthis city has provided a window for some people toexplore the city closely and many others to participatein that journey.

Walks are just part of the many events that will beheld from August 18 to 25 and beyond.

All of them are free and all have been a labour oflove and voluntarism.

Make sure you attend some of these events. This isour city. And it has a history of its own.

Unanswered questionsbehind Aadhar Card project

In a recent edition of the Mylapore Times,I read a letter from a reader about thequestions he had about UID enrollment.

There are, in fact, questions that arefundamental to the project which have stillnot been answered. TheStatesman newspaper,Calcutta, decided to run aseries which it titled‘Aadhaar Unmasked’,and 15 parts have alreadybeen published withanother 6 parts yet to run.I am the author of thesearticles and I can provideweb links to readers whowish to have them.

I am taking thisliberty because I havebeen following thisproject since 2009 andfind that there are manyproblems associated withit which the general public is not aware of,and on which unquestioning attitude theproject is steamrollering ahead.

Just as an indication of why we may needto seek those questions, consider this: itstarted out as being voluntary, and is nowbeing gradually made mandatory with thethreat of exclusion from services, even LPG,if we do not enroll. It was said that only basicdata, enough to issue a number, would becollected; now your reader says that theywant details of PAN card, bank accounts, voter ID, passport, etc. and there is noexplanation why.

Most cynically, the project has beenpromoted as an answer to corruption. But, itis the ordinary citizen whose information isbeing collated for use by the administratorand others who may have the power to accessthe collated data. In the meantime, there areregular inroads being made into the Right toInformation framework that was created sothat the corruption of the powerful could bekept in check!

This project has serious implications andit is only fair that citizens should know. Myemail ID is - [email protected]

Aadhaar Card processgets better

This is to thank Mylapore Times forpublishing the article written by K.Gopalakrishnan on “Some Nagging Querieson Aadhar Card” in the issue dated August10, 2013. I also thank Gopalakrishnan onraising queries at the apt time.

After this article was published inMylapore Times, the process has been

streamlined somewhat and we were able toget the biometrics done in a regular way. Ibelong to division 142 and went to ICICIBank’s Alwarpet branch. The token wasgiven a day before and we were asked tocome the next day by 12 noon. We went andcompleted the process within half an hour.

Division 146 residents can go toICICI Mylapore branch forAadhar card. Census slip andration card are mandatory..

Those who don’t have thecensus slip can do this - get thecensus slip copy of yourneighbours if they have it and gettheir name checked at the Aadharhelp desk. If their names are there, the person at the desk will giveyou a new number (10 digit) andproceed with registration.

One more suggesstion. Itwould be better if KYR (Knowyour Resident) forms are given atthe counter itself instead of askingpeople to go to zonal office at

Adyar. It would be better if the help desk forAadhar enquiries is located at a prominentplace at each venue.

How we stoppedhouse-owner fromcutting down a tree

My friend Marichami of Nallor Vattamwas walking down the R.K. Nagar 4th Crossin R.A.Puram at around 12 noon on Sunday11th August. when he saw a daylight atrocity- the felling of a fully grown tree.

He immediately called on the personGajendran of the house who had employedthe workers to fell the tree for silly reasonslike that of insects entering his house. He saidhe would not stop the felling and challengedMarichami. Marichami informed the workersof dire consequences of the illegal act andthey stopped just before the main trunk wasbeing cut.

Marichami called me soon after and Iregistered a complaint with ChennaiCorporation helpline at around 2 p.m.. Ispoke to the Parks Overseer of Zone 13 whopromised swift action. Police Control Room

was informed too and the patrol arrived totake us and the owner to E4 police station ataround4 p.m.. I registered a complaint with thepolice and received the CSR at 7 p.m. after along wait. Though we wasted a good part ofour Sunday we felt satisfied the we had saveda tree and took action

Authorities should respond faster to suchpublic interest complaints and help activists

Adhaar Card process: thegood and bad experience

After reading the woes expressed by aresident in the last issue of Mylapore Times Ifelt I would also share some of the issues.

ICICI Bank have taken space on thesecond floor to use for Aadhar Cardprocess..It was possible to complete theformalities for 150 persons during the dayperiod with three cameras and techniciansaround.

This has since been increased to fourcameras with four technicians accounting for200 persons to be completed in a day.

Since senior citizens were put to lot ofinconvenience of waiting the authoritiesdecided to introduce token system. Tokenswere issued at 9.00 am with instructions tocome at a particular time based on time takento complete the formalities.

Suddenly the issue of tokens was shiftedto 7.00 am without notice. However lastSaturday, I (73 years young!) went at 6.45 amwith the purpose of taking a token. On thatday it was decided not to issue tokens sinceone of the cameras broke down..So all thepeople who came stayed back and completedthe formalities despite inconvenience.

I came home at 2.30 pm totally drained;however the staff were very cooperative; oneof the technicians took just 15 minutes forlunch. The formalities include taking photo, thumb impressions of both hands, four fingerimpressions of both hands, eye impressions.PAN card number or account number of yourof bank is not being insisted on. You have totake the ration card as well as the slip whichwas given at the time of taking census.

If this slip is not available you have to goto the Chennai Corporation office at Adyar

with your ration card toget the slip. You have toappreciate the efforts ofR A Puram ResidentsAssociation to bring insome volunteers to helpthe teams here.
