With the monsoon season ahead, Greater Chennai Corporation has started operations to desilt the storm water drains in the neigh-bourhood. This is to ensure that water does not stagnate on the roads when it rains or struggles to run off. This week, one witnessed contract workers clearing the drains on C. P. Ramaswamy Road, at the R. A. Puram end. (photo above)

There were tall mounds of silt at street corners one evening - revealing that the job of cleaning drains is not done too often.

The area engineer for Cor-poration Ward 123 says, “We have completed the cleaning-work at C. P. Ramaswamy Road. Since 2nd Cross Street and First Main Road at R. A. Puram get flooded very

Civic workers begin to desilt storm water drainsquickly when it rains, we will start working on these two streets next. We hope to get the nod on proposals for a few other streets soon.”

There are various reasons for a blockage, he says.

“The first is the flow of mud and dirt from the road. The second, are rats. The big ones often dig up the mud which blocks the flow of water. Leaves and waste also enter the storm water drain through the chute pipe”.

It can take up to four days for the workers to desilt the drains on one street, he says. The work at both the streets at R. A. Puram will be done in a week, he adds.

Mylapore’s MLA, R. Nataraj has visited and inspected tanks of four local temples this past week. Local area officers of state agencies were with him on this inspection.

The MLA says the aim of the visit is to ensure that rain water is properly harnessed and stored so as to charge the underground aquifer.

“Mylapore has a very good system of storm water draining into the temple tanks but there are some problems that need to be tackled,” the MLA said.

The MLA-led group looked at the tanks of Sri Kapaleeswarar, Sri Kesava Perumal, Sri Madhava Perumal and Sri Virupaksheeswarar temples.

The MLA has raised issues like inlets to tanks being blocked or link drains/

pipes lying damaged.“If the obstructions are removed not a

drop of water will stagnate on the road,” the MLA says.

“There is natural (surface) slope from Luz and Palathope towards the Sri Kapali Temple tank.”

He claims that the temple tanks have large inlet ways for flow of water to fill the tank when it rains.

He says he is working with officials of Chennai Corporation, Metro Water and HR and CE departments.

Also, notices are being given to all the business establishments and residents on the Mada Streets to avoid letting waste into drains and to let water flow towards the tank.

“We will closely monitor this project for proper execution before the monsoon breaks,” said Nataraj

Emotionsin the Open

If you wanted to witness the bare emotions and intense engagement of cadres of a political party of long standing, then you had to be outside the gates of Kauvery Hospitals in Alwarpet last weekend.

The DMK party leader, M. Karunanidhi, admitted at this hospital for age-related illness and in a serious condition for a while, drew hundreds of cadres to the hospital zone.

They came here from across the city and state. Men, women, youth, elders. Onlookers and ‘time-passers’ also stopped by, to look - the flyover flanking Kauvery providing a gallery position.

The cadres held up images of the leader, chanted slogans, shared their own ‘Karunanidhi’ stories and kept straining for updates on their leader. Some people stayed on all day - vol-unteers arranged for food and drink, smart food hawkers did the rounds and even the odd downpour did not dampen the diehards.

And as politicians and personalities - from Rajinikanth to Rahul Gandhi, Vijay to Nirmala Sitharaman came to visit the ailing DMK leader, the cadres had something to get engaged in. Perhaps watch the VIPs talk to the large media group.

The huge gathering forced police to cordon off a section of the road and this put off many Alwarpet residents. They grumbled. But as word came out mid-week that Karunanidhi’s condition had improved, the cadres left to mind their lives.Photos: R. Madhan Kumar

S. V. SANKARAN

Physical handicap did not stop this Mylaporean from devoting lots of time to the stageBy Our Staff Reporter

Ignorance of immunisation led to paralysis of his right leg which was soon permanently wasted. But that handicap did not stop S. V. Sankaran from pursuing a full life and indulg-ing in his passion - theatre.

Now 83 years old, this Mandaveli resident was recently decorated with an award to recognise his long contribution to Thamizh theatre - stage management He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at the top of a drama festival it hosted at its auditorium in Mylapore.

And he deserves it.Sankaran was a key member of

the well-known drama troupe, Viveka Fine Arts which was headed by the late ‘Cho’ Ramaswamy among oth-ers. And such was his involvement that besides managing the staff at all Viveka’s plays, he was the one who knew by heart the entire script and could be banked on to be the prompter backstage!

The association with Viveka Fine Arts Club was for 50 years. (Viveka’s golden jubilee was celebrated in 2005.)

Today, Sankaran still gets theatre-people seeking advice and sugges-tions. And he is glad to share them.

Sankaran lost his father at 12. At that time, the family was based near Sirkazhi. As a result of his father’s demise, his brother ( S. V. Venkataraman - father of actor-politician S. Ve. Shekher) took the responsibility of the family, even-tually moving it to Triplicane in 1949.

S. V. Venkatraman was a leading light in Triplicane Fine Arts Club and his active involvement influenced young Sankaran to develop a keen interest in Tamil drama

and theatre.In 1949,

Sankaran joined Triplicane Fine Arts as a stage assistant. “This marked the beginning of my six year asso-ciation with this great institution,” he says. “ And I also dived into the world of stage management,

an extremely important function of any drama and theatre performance.”

Parallely, he also assisted an-other famous drama troupe, ‘Madras Amateurs’. The leading actors in that troupe were ‘Major’ Sundararajan, Srikant and S. R. Veeraraghavan.

When ‘Cho’ decided to present TV serials on Doordarshan, Sankaran was his assistant director.

“He chose me because of my knowledge of the stage plays,” says this veteran.

Some of Cho’s famous stage plays adapted for TV included ‘Vandhe Mataram’, ‘Uravugal Illayadi Pappa’ and ‘Saraswathiyan Selvan’.

Today, theatre continues to excite this veteran who retired from Life Corporation of India (LIC).

“He enjoys meeting theatre ar-tistes and interacting with them,” says his son Aravind Sankaran.

The award may have come late in the day. But the choice was just right. A recognition for a man who remained backstage but soaked in it fully.

Sankaran resides at Flat No.5, Temple Rise Apartments, 261, Ramakrishna Mutt Road.

Traffic rule violators, encroachers contribute to chaos at Mandaveli Street junction

Further to S. Srinivasan’s letter in Mylapore Times on the Mandaveli market junction and the chaos there.

This is actually a three-way junction with ‘no entry’ from the Mandaveli terminus. Further, there is no ‘right’ turn from R.K. Mutt Road into St. Mary’s Road.

These restrictions are flouted with impunity. When one is driving from the north-south and has to take a left into Man-daveli Street, there are lots of unauthorised shops immediately on the left. On the right are grocery stores where many two-wheelers are parked.

Both make the street space too narrow to be a free two-way street.

While a traffic signal will certainly help, these other impediments to smooth flow of traffic have to be removed by Chennai Corporation and Traffic Police.

This is a long festering issue and remedial measures would be much appreciated.

Private stores ‘reserve’ public space

Jockey store ( which opened on East Mada Street) has put a slab in a standing position leaning on the small stone pillars on the pavement close to the power junction box near Karpagambal Mess, besides using the barricades to carve space from public space.

This prevents pedestrians from walking on the pavement (which is anyway a luxury for Mylapore residents).

Already, Mylaporeans living here have lost much walking space to shop-keepers. Action much be taken now.

- Bharathi, Mylapore

HomelessFor a few years, we have seen this old

couple living on the hardly 3-feet wide pavement off San Thome Cathedral, exposed to sun and rain.

Hundreds of churchgoers and beach-goers pass by them everyday but nobody seems to be able to persuade the aging rough-sleepers to choose either a government shelter or NGO-sponsored home for the destitutes.

When it rains, they just pull over a plastic sheet over them to prevent the splatter.

Truth to be told in a predominantly Chris-tian zone, such abandonment of helpless hu-man beings is completely contradictory to the teaching ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’

TANGEDCO junction box poses danger

The TANGEDCO power supply junction box on the footpath of 2nd Main Road in R. A. Puram, near Billroth Hospital junction has doors hanging out and the cables are exposed. They may pose a grave danger to pedestrians.

Salai Street’s civic problemSewage and rainwater (when it rains)

flows out and stagnates often at the junction of Nadu Street and Salai Street. Many complaints and reminders to the civic agency gets only one reaction - the men come here and sweep the water down the street so it can dry up! Is there no permanent solution that can be taken?

- Clement Bernard, Mylapore

Street name boards disfigured

Look at our street’s sign board. Posters and stickers are plastered all the time on it. The same situation exists in other street name boards and bus stops. Chennai Corpo-ration should punish such offenders.

Plea to Traffic PoliceI have written for this page often on

the vexing problem of auto drivers, occupying the road in front of Sowbhagya Apts on Srinivasa Avenue. The problem gets compounded during the school break when there is literally a logjam. The Traffic Police do come around to set things right off and on but we want the police to take stringent action by disciplining the auto drivers.

The first day of August.Ruminations.Many many years ago, when the ‘Madras Day’ idea

came to life; the idea that city historian S. Muthiah kept tossing about and friend Sasi Nair and I said, “Time to roll this Chief”

An idea that was simple - celebrate the city - its history, its people, its institutions. In simple ways. And voluntarily.

My enthusiasm flowed from the exciting experience of having curated, by then a few editions of the annual Mylapore Festival - which began as a margazhi season kolam contest held at the playground of Lady Sivaswamy School.

And what a significant launch that ‘Madras Day’ was.A 7 a.m. Walk inside Fort St George, followed by

daylong events at the grand Rajaji Hall, Government Estates ( for many years in the 60s and 70s our playground in the backyard of our neighbourhood).

Much to our surprise, people kept streaming in all through the day, and that night we had the families of the dubash who is said to have brokered the ‘Fort land deal’ between the English and the region’s chieftain.

Over these years, ‘Madras Day’ has evolved, expanded, veered and blossomed. It has also been sniggered at, challenged, debated. . . that’s the way it has to be! But it now has a life of its own.

I call it a work in progress.Because the way it works is fascinating for someone

who is into it but also steps away from it.All that a bunch of us, calling ourselves catalysts do it

to send out a hundred-odd e-mails to people we believe are interested in the city and love to do things. That sets the ball rolling.

Simple things happen - as they have this season. The promoter of two restaurants wants to gift Madras

post-cards to his diners that they can post to friends. A foodie wonders why she does not locate any Food Walks on our calendar and then volunteers to curate one in her neighbourhood.

The Madras Local History Group hosts a series of talks - cinema-politics, Kannadasan and trees are themes. And a architect who takes a paper on ‘Urban Chennai’ for students at a premier architecture school is arranging a lecture and a Walk for the young ones.

I am not going to list ‘achievements’. Or make claims.Madras Day/Chennai Dhinam is a celebration. And if you have to express it any which way - a city of

ours that is unique, a people so colourful - do it this month. On your Tees, in your FB posts and pictures, in your

conversation, in the way you live and work and unwind in this city.

Be proud. Why mumble and grumble ever too often?Say it - Namma Chennai. My Madras. And here - www.themadrasday.in - you will find all the

events for August.

The school’s history can be traced back to 1869 when it was first established as a primary school with three classes. It was known as Vizianagaram Maharajah’s Hindu Girls School then. The then ruler of the state Sir Vijayarama III Gajapathi, was the principal patron of the school.

In 1904, the school’s name was changed to the Mylapore Girls School. Noted lawyer and philanthropist V. Krishnas-wami Aiyar was a major contributor then. In 1910, the school’s name was changed to Vizianagaram Maharani’s Girls School.

In 1930, noted laywer and advocate general, Government of Madras, Sir P. S. Sivaswami Ayyar, donated generously to the school and also bequeathed a large portion of his estate upon his demise in 1946. To honour his contribution, the school was named Lady Sivaswami Iyer Girls School.
