Empty oil barrels, huge lengths of ropes, lorry loads of casuarina poles; this and all that is required for the annual Thai poosam teppam festival at Sri Kapaleeswar Temple in Mylapore are being stocked in spaces alongside the tank.

Soon, work on building the massive float inside the temple tank will start.The teppam festival is to be held from Feb. 8 to 10 this year. On the three evenings,

all gates of the tank will be kept open for people to watch the teppam.

The 82nd Reunion Day of alumnae of Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls Higher Secondary School was held on Sunday, January 26. Some 400 ‘old girls’ at-tended the meet held at the school’s campus in Sundareswarar Swamy Street, Mylapore.

Says P. K. Vijayalakshmi, secretary of the Reunion committee, “While for-mer students from many batches were pre-sent, this year’s meet was especially meant for ‘old girls’ who passed out in the years 1970 and 1995, those who completed 50 years and 25 years of passing out of school.”

Heading Sunday’s event was the school’s secretary Leela Narendran. Vijayalakshmi says that the 82-year old resident of P. S. Sivaswamy Salai passed out from this school in 1954. “She has been instrumental in organizing and encouraging the alumni meets. This year, despite her age-related illness, she came in a wheelchair,” says the commerce and accountancy teacher who is a 1987 alumna.

The ‘old girls’ honoured Dr. Bhooma Parthasarathy, trustee, and director, Thirumalai Char-ity Trust, Ranipet with ‘Purvavid-yarthini Ratna Award’ for being an outstanding student. An educational-ist and social worker, Dr. Bhooma is from the 1970 batch.

Another 1970 batchmate, Dr. Indrani Suresh, director of MediScan Systems, Dr. R. K. Salai

was the chief guest. The Reunion team also honoured two of the school’s staff - V. Vijay-alakshmi, Thamizh teacher and P. S. Rama, cook at the school’s kitchen, since they were retiring this year.

The ‘old girls’ also made donations for the development of the school. Says K. Revathy, biology teacher, and a Reunion committee member and a 1996 alumna, “Over the years, the funds received from our alumnae are used to provide scholarships for deserving stu-dents, helping them with uniforms, for mid-day meals and breakfast.” At the Reunion

meet, the 1995 batch students volunteered to provide funds for providing breakfast for more students.

Retired teachers were presented sarees and gift articles. The meet ended with a grand lunch.

In San Thome, some 200 ‘old boys’ of St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School took part in the 95th Annual General Body meeting and Reunion held on the campus on January 26.

Among them, were alumni from abroad – 25 from USA, Australia and UK. 15

retired teachers also participated. Among the Salesian priests present were Fr. P. J. Sebas-tian who used to be Headmaster at St. Bede’s in the 1970s and is now leading a retired life with the Salesian priests community at St. Mary’s Cathedral, George Town and Fr. Li-onel Xavier, who was a student at St. Bede’s.

The ‘Bedean of the Year’ 2020 awards were given to Kumar Sitaram and Michael Nicholas.

The Old Bedeans also organised a free eye screening camp with the help of Dr. Atheek

of Fathima Eye Clinic. School boarders as well as children who reside in the San Thome area kuppams who attend the night schools organised by the Salesians made use of this camp.

A diabetes detection camp was also held with the help of Dr. T. V. Kumar.

The annual newsletter of the Old Bedeans was released, with the first copy given to Leith Castle resident, F. J. Vincent, the oldest past pupil ( Vincent belongs to the 1940 batch). The Reunion ended with a special lunch.

Cultural fest at Luz HouseA three-day cultural festival called CUSP, offering a mix

of talks, docu-film screenings and concerts has opened at the heritage Luz House in Luz on January 31 morning.

The festival is curated by First Edition Arts and a group of Hindustani and Carnatic classical musicians and features some 50 musicians, speakers and performers from all over India.

On Saturday, Feb.1, 9 a.m.onwards, Chennai-based researcher and story-teller V. R. Devika focuses on Gandhi and the 1.30 p.m. discussion is on ‘Gender and Expression’. The evening concerts are a sarod-veena concert at 4.15 p.m., a Kuchipudi recital at 6.30 p.m. and at 8 p.m., a Hindustani concert.

On Sunday, Feb.2, there is a Hindustani concert at 9 a.m. and a solo theatre show at 11 a.m. – both are ticketed. Later, at 12.30 p.m. there is a talk on ‘Personal Food History of Punjab and the Partition’ followed by a special Punjabi veg. lunch ( to partake of this lunch one must pre-order/register).

That evening, concerts are a flute-violin duet ( 4 p.m.) and a Villuppatu-Carnatic music duet ( 6 p.m.)

Takeover of public spaces to raise gardens, reserve parking lots

There is an ever-growing tendency for resi-dents who live in independent houses and in apartments to appropriate public land using fences. These public spaces are used to raise a garden or grow potted plants.

There are instances also of people using bar-ricades / stones / potted plants to carve out private parking spaces outside their residences and on pavements and streets.

Nailing advertising boards on trees is violation

I find advertising and campaign boards are being frequently nailed to trees on our streets and roads. This is a violation. There is a government order wherein a violator can be fined twenty five thousand rupees fine. My photo features a public message which may be relevant to the public but the person who put it out has tampered with the trees. This must not be done.

This auto is fitted with utilities for passengers

I engaged a auto rickshaw recently in Mandav-elipakkam to ferry my friend who lives in the USA and what a surprise we had.

The auto was fitted with an array of conveni-ences for passengers - a water bottle with drinking water, a small fan, hand lotion in a bottle, ball pen and writing pad and papers and some toffees.

This polite driver did not demand the fare. When we got down he told us that we could pay what we thought was fit for the ride. This auto driver must be recognised by a club or service organization.

Traffic problems on TTK Road

Traffic chaos continues to rule on TTK Road alongside Hotel Crowne Plaza. This is because traffic from three sides entering the road have to negotiate a tricky junction which takes traffic down St. Mary’s Road and down TTK Road.

Revised polling booths located far away from voters’ residence

Residents of Baskarapuram and East Abhiramapuram have been vot-ing for various elections at booths at Jawahar Bal Bhavan, Luz Avenue the past decade.

But according to voter rolls published for the urban local body polls, these voters have been assigned the voting booth at Vidya Mandir school (Booth No. 3527) which is quite far away.

While residents of Ramachandra Road and Justice Sundaram Road have been fortunate to get the same voting booth as before, we in East Abhiramapuram have not been as-signed the nearest booth.

Can the State Election Commis-sion take a look at the proximity of the booth allotted to the voting popu-lation before publishing the rolls?

E-Seva Centre in Chitrakulam zone is often locked

Most of the time, the E-Seva centre located near the Chitrakulam side in Mylapore is locked. We never get to know when the centre is kept open. A few attempts to access some services here have been fruitless. Can Mylaporeans who reside in this area tell us if this centre is closed for good or functions now?

Over the past few years, I have been collecting and collating photographs of the school in Egmore where I studied in the late 60s and through the 70s. This task has not been easy - I have been inconsistent and sourcing rare visuals takes a lot of time. I am particularly keen to get a photo of the place where the school’s story began over a hundred years ago.

My school is run by the Presentation Sisters congrega-tion of nuns who trace their roots to Ireland. Their local histories go back to 19th century Madras. To a city which was a temporary home to many armed forces involved in the wars, to a time when European men co-habited with Indian women and whose relationships were tenuous and a time when there were a substantial number of Christian orphans.

The local church had to be the guardians of these orphans, in George Town, Vepery, San Thome and Egmore. But the priests had a lot on their hands and it fell on the bishop to look for support elsewhere. It was an Irish bishop in Madras who, on one of his trips to his homeland sought help from the Presentation Sisters and that is how a small number of Irish nuns, sailed for close to seven months and landed on the shores of our city and began their missionary work of care and education in George Town, in the area where today stands St. Columbans School.

Over time, the church in Pudupet, near Egmore sought the help of these nuns to handle the Christian orphans who attended a small school and thus, the seeds of St. Anthony’s was sown over one hundred years ago.

Now, where was this little school located? Was it in the church campus? Or was it on the street that runs alongside the church campus where today, are a convent of a differ-ent congregation and a school which share a wall with St. Anthony’s school which was raised on a new property that the runs registered?

School annual reports or campus magazines are secondary sources of information. And when the content is more on academic milestones, campus celebrations and the like, collating detailed information is frustrating. And as for photographs, all you get are group photos of each class, shot by the neighbourhood photographer: and in black and white of that era.

I could however locate one key photograph printed in the golden jubilee souvenir of the school. Of young women, mostly Anglo-Indians who attended the short-hand, typing and secretarial course that the nuns ran on this campus and was hugely popular in that time when jobs for personal secretaries were well-paid opportunities, standing alongside the school campus gate and walls, with creepers running all over. With the help of recollections of an ‘old boy’ of the 60s batch I could flesh out the school’s early facade and layout.

January is a time when many schools host get-togeth-ers of their ‘old boys or old girls’. These are occasions when a school’s campus history can be enriched - asking the alumni/alumnae to share photos and mailing their schooltime experiences. And all this can make for great archives we must have and expand.

The residents of Mandaveli’s Raja Street came together to celebrate the commu-nity’s sixth annual Pongal celebration on January 12.

The hosts said that the purpose of the event was to instill the feeling of unity among the residents and imbibe this quality in the younger generations.

The cultural event was launched with the singing of Ganesha stuti and Thamizh thai vazhthu by a group of residents. Then, the BEAT choir led by guru Raja Rajeshwari sang a few Thamizh songs themed on Thamizh heritage and culture.

Mandaveli’s Raja Street community hosts Pongal carnival

Students from Atmalaya presented a dance performance titled ‘Senthamizhnadu’.

This was followed by a storytelling workshop for the chil-dren of this colony - the theme was on Indian and Thamizh traditions and the workshop was hosted by Srividhya.

The signature event of this celebration has been the kolam/rangoli competition. 14 teams took part - Naalaya Valamai was the theme for this contest. Teams from neighbouring colo-nies were allowed to take part. The judges were Shiv Kumar of ‘Karam Korpom’, an NGO, Radha and Anitha.

Mylapore MLA Dr. R. Nataraj was the chief guest and actor and scriptwriter Suresh was the special guest at the finale.

Team Thanga Thamarai from Tondiarpet, which was led by Niroja, bagged the first prize is the kolam/rangoli con-test. Teams Karpagambal, Nachiyar Kolam, Akai and Falooda were chosen for the other prizes.

In their designs, the teams chose to highlight the themes of harnessing rainwater, reducing pollution, maintaining communal harmony and driving energy conservation and waste management.

Residents were also invited to take part in the tradition-al uriyadi game in which the pot that was hoisted on a pole had to be hit blindfolded. Games of tug of war were held.

A small carnival hosted young entrepreneurs who sold terracotta products,

organic seeds and plants, artificial jewel-lery and clothes. Sugarcane juice and pongal was served to all visitors.

Community groups from R. K. Nagar, TAKSRA, Adyar, Mylapore, Sivaraman Street and MRC Nagar dropped by to take part in the Pongal carnival.

The multi-faceted Manohar Devadoss of San Thome has been chosen for the Padma Shri award this year.

A resident of Papa-nasam Sivan Road, that runs west from San Thome High Road near Dominic Savio School, Manohar Devadoss has been chosen for this national award for his contribution to art.

So what has been this contribution to art?

For over five decades Manohar, who hails from Madurai has been drawing and painting illustrations of all kinds – of Madurai, its life and its landmarks, of Madras and Chennai, its life, its people and its landmarks and on many other subjects that interest him.

But he has been doing this and more despite his failing sight.

Even more remarkable about this man is that he has used his creative

energies to raise lots and lots of funds that have been donated to charity. Manohar, for many years produced unique greeting cards based on his signa-ture illustrations and gave them to business houses in return for monies that were channeled to social agencies that needed funds badly.

Manohar, now 84 has also written a few interest-ing books that also carry his signature illustrations. His most popular book is

on Madurai.Even in this day,

Manohar has not al-lowed his disability to discourage him at-tending in the city and outside. Such is his zest for life.

Nor has he allowed the loss of his wife Mahema, who was re-stricted to a wheelchair after a nasty accident and paralysed and who was the love of his life stop him from associat-ing with projects that interest him and enjoy-ing the company of a large number of friends and well-wishers.
