V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

There were a lot of ideas that popped up in April and May when the Corona virus spread far and deep and unsettled all of us. Ideas that may impact a community in times of change.

And one idea that came out of this experience was the pressing need to produce professional home workers out of our maids and attenders.

In the April to June period, we at the Mylapore Times received lots of SOS messages - on the social media and in our mailboxes, besides phone calls. Among them were calls from abroad and from Mylaporeans seeking help for senior citizens.

Is there is a hospital which can send a nurse to our home?Is it safe to get back our maid who lives in a congested colony

next door?Where can we get a home attendant for a week to attend to my

senior parents? Is it possible to get a lady who can attend to medical needs and

also cook simple meals?Looking back now, it is very evident that our communities are

in need of some key services for senior citizens. And we just do not have trained people around us to meet this need.

This is where we need to create a large pool of trained home servers. And a starting point are the women who work as maids in houses and apartments in the area.

These are women who have always been treated and seen as maids. Just that. And they also get paid only that much for the work done.

Here is the opportunity to turn maids into home service people. People who are trained to nurse elders, understand medical needs and can access medical and related services outside the home, know how to handle utilities that seniors use and smart at addressing emergencies.

This is where voluntary bodies and community groups can step in. List senior docs and nurses and hospitality professionals as train-ers for a short course. Then, sign up six or eight women who now work as maids and would like to get skilled and thus, earn more.

Put these women through an intensive training course locally at times that suit them. Then, make them available for new jobs in the neighbourhood. Repeat the course.

Trained home servers will command better pay and benefits and the community will be happy to engage women who know a thing or two about handling seniors at home.

We have bounced this idea on a few groups that are into community work in Mylapore. And one hopes at least one group seizes this idea and makes it a reality.

Maids alone are not enough for a community where seniors constitute a large group and their needs are multi-fold and most are nuclear families or some, live alone by themselves. The need is for skilled home servers.

Is your area monsoon-ready?If it is still not then you may have

to face a few serious problems if the rains come down steadily for over a fortnight this monsoon season due to break out in late October.

Mylapore has received copious rains now and then the past 3 / 4 weeks. And there have been reports of water stagnating in some streets in the heart of Mylapore where the drainage system is poor or weak.

The photo featured here was shot in the heart of Mylapore, just off Sri Adikesavaperumal Temple zone recently.

Civic workers have been seen clearing the muck and debris in storm water drains in many areas; this is to make sure the rainwater flows down the drains if the rain is heavy. But not all drains have been cleared yet.

TANGEDCO has in almost all cases raised the height of its junction boxes so the stagnating water does not affect these installations and to precent power leaks.

If there is a lacunae, you may want to ping the local TANGEDCO office now.

In some areas, workers have exca-vated sides of a street / road to work on some local drains or faults and these have been left half-done, with loose earth lying around posing a danger to motorists and pedestrians. If you come across such dangers, you can complain on the GCC web site.

Policemen are now on foot patrol in the neighbourhood

Since a fortnight, local area policemen have been carry-ing out foot patrolling in the neighbourhood. On an evening recently, we saw a group of police officers from Foreshore Estate station were on a foot patrol at Mandaveli market.

Chennai City Police re-introduced this system a few weeks ago. Said A. P. Basha, Inspector, Foreshore Estate Police station, who was leading the team, “To prevent crime and make ourselves (police) more accessible to the public, our Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal has re-started foot patrols – the oldest system of patrolling that used to be a norm in the 80s.”

“With the advent of patrolling bikes and cars, this system was discontinued.” Now, Inspector Basha says they carry out foot patrols in busy areas of the neighbourhood, regularly for two hours in the evenings.

“On our patrol, we also advise people to wear masks. And encourage them to reach out to us if they face any is-sues.” It’s a new experience for us too, he adds.

The record rainfall on Thursday across many parts of the city including the Mylapore zone caused flooding and water stagnation in many parts of the Mylapore neighbourhood.

People woke up to be greeted by flooded streets and roads which had water to levels of at least 2 feet in height. The rain, which began late on Wednesday night continued through the morning of Thursday, October 29.

Flooding was seen on Luz Avenue and in

Abiramapuram’s streets, on the busy, arterial Royapettah High Road as well as a place which always gets flooded after a spell of steady rain – P. S. Sivaswamy Salai.

In some places, the water drained off by noontime since the local area drains could channel the rainwater.

But in inner colonies where the drains are absent or weak, the water remained on the streets and created a mess.

In many areas, workers of stores located on main streets were seen trying to use crude methods to lead the flood water into drains by clearing the muck and waste that blocked the flow of water. The water was at their doorsteps.

A section of R. K. Mutt Road, at the South Mada Street junction caved in. This hap-pened at an area where storm-water drain (SWD) desilting work was being carried out.

Said one Chennai Corpo-ration’s assistant executive engineer, “We had dug up this section of road to desilt the drain here.

After yesterday’s work, we had covered the dug portion with loose sand so as to con-tinue the remaining work.

However, the loose sand could not withstand heavy rain. Hence,

this portion of a road caved in breaking the section of drain and the drainage pipe that was passing below it.”

Recovery work to set things right was undertaken on a war-footing since this arterial road is a busy one.

A few alarms went off across the city following heavy and steady rains since Thurs-day night and the flooding on many streets across Mylapore zone.

But there was one positive development in the Mylapore area – a steady torrent of rainwater flowing into the tank of Sri Ka-paleeswarar Temple.

The water was flowing in from the outlet on the far, western end of the south side of the tank ( opposite Sangeetha restaurant). Water from South Mada Street and from R K Mutt Road flowing into the channel that leads to the tank flowed in all through the morning.

The same was the case of rainwater flowing off the East Tank Street, the street

that runs parallel to the eastern side of the tank. This street was recently relaid to allow water to flow towards the tank side and into newly set up chambers and pipelines.

Rainwater also flowed furiously into Chitrakulam, the temple tank which had a big spread of plants and shrubs and vegetation which had not been cleared. The water level has now covered up much of the vegetation here.

Chennai Corporation is in the process of leading rainwater falling on streets around Chitrakulam into this tank.

If the monsoon is steady and good, there is bound to be a large quantity of water in these two temple tanks.

Ashvita Bistro re-opensits outdoor space for dine-inNew tea joints called ‘Namma Cafe’

open in Mylapore zone

Two branches of a new tea joint chain called ‘Namma Cafe’ have recently opened in Mylapore.

While one is at Venkatakrishna Road, R.A.Puram near Spencer’s supermarket, the other is located at C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet. The Alwarpet branch is operating from a space where the tea store Chai Kanth used to be there earlier.

This store is the venture of C.K. Kumara-vel, and daughter Dhamyanthi who run the

popular salon chain Naturals. The nook now offers a range of tea varie-

ties starting from Rs 10. Ginger, sulaimani and lemon are some of the tea options avail-able here. The store also sells filter coffee, karupatti and sukku malli coffee. Says C.K. Kumaravel, Co-founder of Naturals, “The speciality of Namma cafe is that proper hygiene is maintained here. Considering the current scenario, hygiene becomes very important especially at tea shops.”

“To ensure the same, we sanitise our store frequently. Our workers wear masks, and hairnet caps all the time. And tea is served in disposable paper cups.”

Snacks including veg puff, samosa, and Osmania biscuits are also sold at the store.

Namma cafe’s store at R.A.Puram has a facility to seat around 6 people. The store has also stocked vintage candies like Thengai mittai, Kamarkattu and Then mittai and sa-vouries including murukku, thattai, and kara boondi. A cup of tea is priced at Rs 10.
