Viji Nagashwaran’s‘Affordable Art Show’ is notonly an annual event butseems to have a place of itsown in our city.

The woman behindVinnyasa Premier ArtGallery in CIT Colony hascreated a brand for art thatmany people nowpatronise.

Every year, in thesummer months of Mayand June Viji’s gallery,located in a tree-linedMylapore neighbourhoodthrows its doors open topeople who can only spendthat much on a watercolour painting or a small

sculpture.So if you walk into this

place this week, you canchoose from paintings thatrange in size from 3 ft by3ft to some that are just8 x 8 inches.

Gallery manager Irfansays that most pieces havebeen collected and slottedby Viji herself and though alarge part of the collectionis by the artists of this city,there are some works byestablished artists fromBangalore, Delhi andKolkatia too.

You will find works bysenior professionals as wellas budding talent who haveblossomed at the local artcolleges.

Says Viji, “It is also agreat opportunity for artbuyers, who have justbegun to buy art.”

Explains Irfan, “Ourprices start at Rs.500 andend at Rs.20,000. We getwellknown artists to giveus works that can be pricedat a maximum ofRs.20,000.”

That does not mean theart works are pedestrian. AIndian ink illustration or awater colour of a monsoonscene may well catch yourfancy here.

“People seem to knowwhat they want and if somework catches their eye theybuy,” says Irfan.

In saying this heindicates to a growingtrend of people who havemoved into a newapartment or redone theirhomes seeking pieces of artfor their walls.

arts passedaway on May23 evening athis residenceat MathalaNarayananStreet,Mylapore.

He was 88.He studied at P S School

and went on to run his ownbusiness for over 45 years. Hewas also a lead contractor tovarious governmentdepartments.

A classical music rasikaand patron, he founded andran the OothukkaduVenkatakavi Academy Trustas a managing trustee since1988.

He took pains topropagate the songs ofOothukkadu Venkatakavi byholding concerts and contestsfor children and gettingartistes to include the songsin their concerts.

He was also the presidentof the Sri Rama Bhakta JanaSabha at Sri ApparswamyTemple, Mylapore for30 years and led theSri Ramanavami utsavamfest here.

His family said he was a

close associate of V V Giri,former president of India

He is survived by his wife,three sons and twodaughters.

S. Sreenivasa Rao. Anextremely kind hearted andsoft spoken person, “Parvathimami “was a favourite amongpeople of all ages in her area.

“A true Mylaporean, shewas born and brought up inMylapore, settled here aftermarriage, and had alwaysexpressed a desire to breatheher last here,” says daughterKanaka.

She is survived by herdaughters MeenakshiShankar and KanakaCadambi son-in-law VinodCadambi, and grandchildrenJayendra (Babhroo),Shailendra (Yajvee) andAparna.

TMS: his times in MylaporeReported by R. Saravanan

Veteran playback singerT M Soundararajan whopassed away on May 25evening at his residence inMandavelipakkam spent mostof his lifetime in thisneighbourhood.

TMS, as he was fondlycalled in the filmworld and byhis fans was the king ofplayback singing in his time,singing for MGR and SivajiGanesan among otherfilmstars and these were hugehits, many of which havevintage value and arecelebrated even today.

His songs on Lord Murugawere also popular and areplayed to this day.

He was decorated with thePadma Shri by the Indiangovernment and theKalaimamani award by thestate.

As news of his death spreadwell wishers dropped in at thefamily’s apartment at SivamsFlats on West Circular Road inMandavelipakkam to paytheir respects and offer theircondolences to the family.

He is survived by his wifeSumitra and two sons, Balrajand Selvakumar and adaughter, Mallika. He was 91.

TMS’ career blossomed inthe Mylapore neighbourhood.

When Soundararajanarrived in the city fromMadurai in 1946, he first choseto reside with friends in a

small quarter in SeethammalColony, which is located offTTK Road.

After marriage, the TMSfamily came to stay for a shortwhile in New Street ( nearChitrakulam).

In 1956, TMS built a housein Mandavelipakkam’s WestCircular Road and the familymoved in there.

In 2002, the house wasdemolished and apartmentswere built. Since then, theTMS family has lived inSivams Flats.

TMS and his friends hadsome favourite hangouts inMylapore - one was RajajiSeeval Shop on South MadaStreet.

The group which includedmusic director M SViswanathan and some writersand singers would munch onbetel leaves and have longchats here, said familymembers. The shop wasopposite Sri VelleeswararTemple.

There were two otherhangouts for TMS and hisfriends from the cinema world- Woodlands Drive-In onCathedral Road and ShantiVihar in Luz, both defuncttoday but busy restaurants intheir time.

The famed actors he sangfor - MGR and Sivaji Ganesan- used to drop by at TMS’ houseoccasionally. MSV was aregular visitor too.

TMS had a office onDr Ranga Road.

Last week, his funeralprocession wended throughMylapore and the final act wasperformed at the graveyard inMylapore, behind the DGP’soffice.

R. Prajesh, a P. S. Seniorstudent is also a talentedchess player and is nowmaking a mark.

He took the top spot inthe recent TN state chesstournament for under-13players. He won the Dolphintrophy. The meet was held inThiruvarur in early May.

Prajesh is 11 years oldand in Std.6 at school.

He participated in theCDCA under-13 districtselection chess tournament inChennai and was placedthird in this district and waschosen to be part of this teamfor the state tourney.

Prajesh’s father, P.Raghunadha Babu says hisson worked hard and spentlots of time and money toachieve this win.

Prajesh stood state 2nd in2011 in the under-9 category.

my first English teacher.Her end came quietly and after she had completed

her assignment here.Attending the funeral Mass at St. Luke’s in Anna Nagar

even as the busy neighbourhood opened its doors to work andbusiness around the Tower Park was my way of saying thankyou to a guru who had a bit to do with what I am today.

Ms Devotta hailed from the southern coastal town ofTuticorin and was among the early residents of Anna Nagar,settling down before the neighbourhood was populated withhouses and bungalows.

In the classroom, she gave life to Shakespeare’s plays andhelped us sharpen our essay-writing skills.

Her tips and encouraging remarks helped me gainconfidence in my writing. Much later, at a school alumnimeet she was glad to know more about my publishingventures.

How do our schools and colleges remember thecontributions that teachers make?

I guess we realise the value of their work much later inour lives. School managers would certainly value it muchearlier. How then do managements and alumni respect thememory of their teachers?

While reporting alumni meetings for our neighbourhoodnewspapers, we do find that many alumni groups make it apoint to invite their ‘old’ teachers, honour them at the eventand even share a purse if the person is in need of it.

I often wonder if our celebrated schools with longhistories behind them cannot develop a campus history space.

A room or a corner in the lobby which showcases schooluniforms and badges, report cards and trophies. A Hall ofFame of outstanding students and a Roll of Honour of allteachers and school principals.

This is the space which can make the current generationwell informed and proud. And help a school showcase itshistory.

Last week, when an ‘old boy’ of St. Bede’s came by togive an obituary note of his mom and we got to know that healso served in the school’s Old Bedeans Association (OBA) Iused the occasion to encourage him to launch the socialhistory space.

Many schools like P. S. and St Bede’s, St Raphael’s andVidya Mandir have great histories and these may well beshowcased on campus.

Mylapore police have done some smartwork to track down and arrest a womanwho committed a crime at the busy SaiBaba Temple in Mylapore’s VenkatesaAgraharam.

The woman from north Chennai hadstolen a gold key chain that a womandevotee had kept momentarily on a ledgeas she was about to pray here during arecent visit.

The victim was the mother of actorVishal and resides in Anna Nagar. Shefiled a complaint with the Mylapore police,who then looked through the CCTVfootage recorded by security cameras atthis busy temple and located the criminalact.

The police then kept a close eye onpeople hanging around the temple andzeroed in on the accused when she washere. The CCTV image helped the police tonab the thief.

Police Commissioner Georgecommended the quick and smartinvestigation of this case by the Mylaporeteam led by ACP Ravishankar and CrimeInspector Sivalingam. The team includedsub-inspectors Kumaresan, Arunachalamand Anitha and SSIs Padmanabhan andChandran and Chelladurai,.

The management, a few teachers and a group ofstudents of Sai Vidyalaya Matric School in Mylaporestaged a protest near the school’s gate in VenkatesaAgraharam on Thursday morning.

They demanded that the trustees of Sai BabaTemple that is next door and on whose land the schoolstands to rebuild rooms that had been demolished bymen hired by the temple and to restore files and schoolrecords lost or damaged in this case.

This agitation was led by the Sai Vidyalayala SchoolProtection Group.

The protest was held for an hour on May 30. Later,Mylapore police arrested the agitators and took themaway in vans and detained them in a hall nearMundakakanni Amman Temple.

Recently, the school managers found a section oftheir hall/room demolished by men contracted by thetemple, run by a Trust.

This school stands on the temple’s land, leased outto it but temple managers say that they need morespace for devotees and for annadhanam purpose.

But it is not clear yet if the temple gave notice tothe school on the issue.

Pavements outside Airteloffice ‘taken over’

This is a photo above taken near theBharti Airtel office in Mandavelipakkamnear the Alphonsa Corporation play ground.

The entire pavement is treated like aparking lot for two wheelers and one part ofthe road is used as parking space.

Bunk shops now occupy another sectionof the pavement here.

This needs some action by ChennaiCorporation since public space has beentaken over completely by office goers andbunk shops and the public cannot use thepavements.

Tribute to TMSFor all those, who are perpetuating the

memories of the golden period of TamilCinema, the recent passing away of TMS isyet another shock, especially for theresidents of Mandaveli, who alwaysconsidered themselves as fortunate to be inhis neighbourhood.

His glorious years of supremacy dictatedthe trends of the golden era of the cinema ofthe 60s and 70s. That voice would keepreverberating in our minds, as most of uswould have grown up listening to hisinnumerable immortal melodies capturingthe moods and matching the voices of the

great actors, whom he sangfor,, especially SivajiGanesan and MGR.

His fans and musiclovers would find it verydifficult to come to termswith the loss. Even today,while watching TV andbeing indecisive aboutstaying on one channel,one factor that could makethe decision easier, is whenhis songs are played.While, praying for his soulto rest in peace, the

remaining treasures amongst us of the sameera need to be well preserved.

Another tribute to TMST M Soundararajan is like a Nadigar

Thilagam to me and like our MellisaiMannar, TMS was a noble soul who neverresorted to any gimmicks and he did the jobwith the greatest devotion.

When he wept , I wept too and when Iwept he did it. When he was in joy I toowas. That is TMS - he sang once for a filmrecording and then, the world sang manythousand times.

I am glad that I was born here and was apart of the air which he breathed and in thearea he lived in. I paid my last respects andsaw him in a glass case; can we haveanother TMS? I want to weep alone now.

After she and her school inLuz celebrated this milestone,Aishwarya was busypreparing for the IIT JEE advanced exam this weekendsince she is aiming to get into IIT and pursue a coursethat is close to her first love - physics. She scored a centumin math. Aishwarys says she split her study time betweenthe CBSE exams and the IIT JEE preparations.

Guru Peyarchi was observed on May 28 at Sri Sakthi VinayagarTemple of Kesavaperumalpuram ( off Greenways Road, R A Puram)with a grand homam by sivacharyas and abhishekams to LordDakshinamurthi and the Navagrahas. The deities were adorned withsilver kavachams and pujas were performed.

During the Agni Nakshatram period Sri Sakthi Vinayagar wasdecorated with a cool Vlamichaver canopy and a Dharapatra wasprovided overhead with constant flow of rosewater over the deityday and night for the entire period.

On May 29, to mark the conclusion there was a grandannappavadi offering to Sri Sakthi Vinayagar decorated with fruits,sweets, dryfruits and eatables.
