    WELCOME TO MNSTER

Just what is typical of this city? Is it the imposingcathedral, the venerable churches and the dignifiedpatrician houses? Or the Gothic Town Hall with itshistorical legacy of the Peace of Westphalia? Or per-haps rather the exuberant atmosphere, the manyyoung faces everywhere in the streets and cafs andthe multitude of bicycles?

Mnster: An old city or a young one? Actually, its thewrong question. Because its precisely this contrast, this excitement, which gives the city its unmistakeableflair. Its a Hanse city, and a cathedral city, with over1200 years of rich tradition. At the same time its anacademic city with a large student population. All thismakes Mnster unique among Germanys large cities.

A rich history and todays vibrant culture, both inter-linked in everyday life in the city, are what you canexperience at first hand here. For example, a trendypub located within medieval walls, Picassos art in aWestphalian courtyard, or the gems of Baroque master-builders side by side with icons of contemporaryarchitecture.

Mnsters charm and beauty feed on this interplay.Welcome to your very own journey of discovery!

HISTORIC TOWN HALLAND CITY WINE HOUSE

Actually, to call this a tour is overdoing it a bit. Everything isvery close at hand, and when you see it youre already gettinga very concise picture of whats important in Mnster andcharacteristic of the city. Off we go!

From the Historic Town Hall to St Lamberts Churchabout 1 hour

The most important room in the historic Town Hall: The Spanish-Dutch Peace Treaty was ratified here, in what was then the CouncilChamber, on 15 May 1648, and this marked the birth of The Nether-lands as a country. A few months later, on October 24, the Peace ofWestphalia was signed here and in Osnabrck, bringing the ThirtyYears War to an end. The portraits of the sovereigns and of the mostimportant emissaries are a reminder of this event of European signi-ficance. The Hall of Peace, preserved in its original state, can be viewedfrom Tues Fri, 10 am 5 pm, and on Sat, Sun and public holidaysfrom 10 am 4 pm (except when official events are taking place).

    HALL OF PEACE

This 14thcentury Gothic building with its characteristic gable isMnsters landmark. It was almost completely destroyed in thewar but was rebuilt in the 1950s as a near-replica through privateinitiative taken by the business community and with the help of

donations made by the people of Mnster. The City Wine Housenext door dates from 1615, and it was here that the city scalesand wine stores were kept in earlier times. Decisions taken bythe city council and the courts used to be announced from thebalcony, under the citys coat of arms. The square behind theTown Hall is named after the Peace of Westphalia, the basic prin-ciple of which Tolerance through Dialogue is recalled by thebronze benches created by Eduardo Chillida.

This is the heart of the historic Hanse city. From the 12 thcen-tury onwards merchants and traders built their houses in thisarea, adjacent to the Cathedral, and sold their wares under thearcades. This collection of 48 arched houses with their Gothicor Renaissance gables was largely destroyed in the World War II,but they were rebuilt on the basis of their old forms some as

exact replicas, some in a simplified, modern style. This today iswhere a large part of the citys life takes place. This is not onlywhere visiting heads of state are received and festivities are held, but also where people take a stroll, go shopping and enjoy life.

This late Gothic hall church dating back to the 14th/15thcentu-ries forms one end of Prinzipalmarkt. This is where Cardinal vonGalen, the so-called Lion of Mnster, preached his courageoussermons criticizing the Nazis. On the church tower three ironcages have been preserved in which the bodies of the Anabaptistleaders were displayed in the mid-16th century to act as a war-ning to the population. Above this is the room of the towerwarden. Every evening (except Tues) he blows his horn everyhalf-hour until midnight. First mentioned in documents in 1481,his job originally was to stand guard and watch out for fires.

    PRINZIPALMARKT

    ST LAMBERTS CHURCH

Over 1200 years ago Liudger, missionary to the Saxons, built a

first monastery on the hill around which the city of Mnster sub-

sequently grew up. The Cathedral began to take on its present-day form from 1225 Romanesque architecture with Gothic

additions, built mainly of Baumberg sandstone. One of the speci-

alities inside the Cathedral is the Astronomical Clock dating from

the 16thcentury with its daily chimes and the three revolving Magi

(Mon to Sat, 12 noon, Sun and public holidays 12.30 pm. In front

of the Cathedral is the traditional weekly market (Weds and Sat,

7 am to 2.30 pm), considered to be one of the finest in Germany.

Together with St Clements and the Dominican Church, the Erb-drostenhof Architect Johann Conrad Schlauns masterpiece, built between 1753 and 1757 forms the so-called Baroque is-land in the middle of the city. Unusually, Mnsters finest ari-stocratic residence stands diagonally on a rectangular site. Todayit is the seat of the State Curator of Westphalia. Visits are onlypossible on official occasions.

    Giant Pool Balls Claes Oldenburg

(Das gegenlufige Konzert)The bailey of this castle, inwhich the Gestapo executedprisoners in 1944, is transfor-med into a gripping memorial:42 metallic hammers beatagainst the walls, red lampscast flickering patches of light, water drips into a cistern a haunting experience.

The three parts of this bronzesculpture stand close to eachother but not connected. Intheir harmonious smoothness, and embedded in green park-land, they combine the experi-

ence of modern art with that ofnature.

These have become one of thecitys landmarks. A giant onceplayed billiards here and leftbehind three balls. Oldenburgachieved worldwide famethrough enlarging and thus de-familiarizing everyday objects.

As the works title suggests, the visitorshould sit down on the grass at the footof the steel mast and look up into thesky. And, indeed, 15 metres up between

22 steel antennae, there appears aflickering poetic message in delicatewire letters whose non-material natureis increased by distance. And whichmessage? Read for yourself! The bronze benches created

by the famous Basque sculptor(1924 2002) reflect the

guiding principle of the Peaceof Westphalia: a negotiatedpeace through the patientsearch for compromise butnot always easy and not alwaysunbroken.

A stroll under the colonnades of the venerable old patricianhouses is a must. Elegant fashion, exclusive jewellery, watchesand antiques in specialist shops that in many cases have beenhere for a very long time. Stop for a coffee in the shade of thehistoric Town Hall and St Lamberts Church and let your gazewander over a unique city panorama.

Here is where Mnsters history and individual lifestyle come to-

gether to provide a special kind of shopping experience. Many of

the shops here are run by the owners themselves, and there are

also popular shops for younger people. The culinary delights on

offer run the gamut from traditional Westphalian to international.

With its narrow winding streets this quarter has one of the oldest

in the city centre. Although known especially as a traditional pubquarter, with its galleries and antique shops it also has a lot tooffer art and antique lovers.

Many small, exclusive shops specializing in fashion, furniture, antiques and art provide the setting for a relaxed shopping tour.Cafs and restaurants provide opportunities for visitors to relaxand enjoy themselves during a shopping break or in the evening.

A wide range of shops, restaurants and things to see and do havemade this quarter a popular destination for locals and guests

alike, with its renowned hotels, numerous cafs and clubs andthe GOP Variety Theatre.

The place to go out in the citys harbour area. Here is where vi-sitors come across an exciting mixture of art and culture, gast-ronomy and hip clubs, in old harbour buildings and out-of-the-ordinary modern ones right at the waters edge.

Mnsters oldest commercial street is a lively mixture of fashionand shoe shops, jewellers, home dcor stores and small cafs all

flanked by cultural highlights, especially the so-called Baroque is-

land: the Erbdrostenhof, the Dominican Church and St Clement s.

Located between Ludgeristrae and Knigsstrae, this quarteris an attractive mixture of large fashion stores and departmentstores, smaller shops typical of Mnster and many restaurantsand cafs. Ludgeristrae is one of Germanys Top 10 shoppingstreets. A special attraction is the modern Mnster Arcades, ashopping mall on three levels.

The outstanding modern architecture here (Urban Design Prize2010) presents an attractive contrast to the historical Prinzi-palmarkt. Trendy chain stores for young fashion, as well as barsand cafs in plenty of space that opens up new opportunities tostroll around the centre of Mnster.

    Rothenburg05

A lively street linking Prinzipalmarkt, the Mnster Arcades andthe Aegidiimarkt. Take a stroll and enjoy the combination of high-class chain stores, local individualists and traditional hospitality.
