TIDBITS® TRIMS THE TREE
IT’S ORNAMENTALby Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits examines ornaments used during the holidays. Some are historical, most beautiful, many breakable, and plenty just fun! • One of the dictionary definitions for ornamental is:
decorative: serving as a decoration and having no practical use.
• Historically it is said that the holiday tradition of decorating Christmas trees started in Germany. The first decorations were simple white candles followed by roses a bit later.
• In 1605, a groundbreaking moment occurred when a tree in Strasbourg, France, a city on the Rhine River near the German border, was brought inside for decorating. It was adorned with paper roses, nuts, wafers, sweets and lighted candles. After this, more trees were brought indoors and making ornaments became a family holiday tradition.
• One of the first Christmas trees in England was an 1840 Royal Family celebration when Queen Victoria included a tree in honor of her German-born husband Prince Albert’s heritage. Being the great influence that she was, many people wanted their own trees!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make a start on that new workplace challenge. But get more information before you find yourself too deeply involved without knowing in which direction you should go.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might find things becoming tedious as your schedule slows down for the holidays. Use this time to get information about a possible post-New Year job change.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The creative Twin finds outlets for her or his ideas in the early part of the week. The practical Twin takes it a step further and rallies support to turn the ideas into reality.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s time to stop being intimidated by someone’s negative behavior. Start taking positive steps on your own to help strengthen your position down the line.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Look closely at that so-called golden opportunity. Best to be a cautious Cat who approaches things slowly, than one who pounces without knowing where you’ll land.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your apology can resolve that personal situation before it overshadows the holidays. You’ll feel better, even if you’re only partly to blame for what happened.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Avoid overtaxing yourself, even if your energy levels are high and you feel that you can do it all. Best to pace yourself so you won’t run yourself down before the holidays.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your sense of humor helps get you through a stressful period. Some of your quick quips can take the edge off any remaining negativity being aimed at you.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your artistic talents not only help you express yourself these days, but they also set up a line of communication between you and someone very special.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s fine to appreciate the importance of “proper form” for doing things. And, before you know it, you’re not alone: Others have taken the plunge with you.
IT’S ORNAMENTAL (continued):• Many of the ornaments in the early years of
decorating trees were handmade from paper, cloth or even foods, such as cookies. Hand-stitched snowflakes were also very popular.
• Special items that emerged for decorating trees in America were cranberries and popcorn. Early Americans would string the readily available, colorful foods for trimming their trees.
• President Franklin Pierce was the first U.S. president to have a Christmas tree in the White House, in 1856. The first “national” Christmas tree erected was by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. However, the first “official” tree was not switched on complete with electric lights until President Calvin Coolidge moved the tree to its location near the White House in 1923.
• Up until the 1880s Christmas ornaments were mainly handmade by families and friends and given as gifts. Many were disposed of after a season. The only ornaments sold publicly were hand-cast lead and hand-blown glass German decorations.
• German entrepreneurs saw the possibility of a market developing for mass marketed ornaments in the early1880s.
• Lauscha, Germany became the hub of the glass ornament business and had many glass companies. For years they had been producing glass articles such as marbles and bottles and soon began creating glass molds for ornaments. Their first ornaments were molds of Christian saints, famous people, children, animals and more. These new ornaments were a huge success and were in demand. Nearly every family in the

◆ Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box mix of cake on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative.
◆ Inexpensive gift idea: cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday pick or spray. Place inside a gallon-size zipper-top bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.
◆ Instead of going out and buying extra items to have on hand for guests, just borrow from your neighbors. Extra towels, place settings, silverware, kitchen appliances: It’s a pretty good bet that someone on your street has it for you to borrow. If you don’t know your neighbors well enough to ask, maybe you should start planning a get-to-know-you party right now.
◆ Inexpensive gift idea: On the front of an empty photo album or scrapbook, print out and arrange color photos of your recipient in a collage. Glue the photos to the front of the album and cover with a decoupage glaze, like Mod Podge. Let dry and glaze again. You’ve just made a one-of-a-kind gift!◆ “When holiday cookie time comes, I keep a plastic pitcher of hot water in the sink. I toss cookie cutters into it when I am done with them, so the corners are soaking. They really seem to only need a rinse and a quick brush-off afterward. Mine don’t get caked up with dough.” -- Jill C., via email

10 Reasons to Adopt an Older Pet1. What you see is what you get. When you adopt an adult cat, you know what you are getting. Sure, kittens are cute, but you never know what the future holds. An adorable kitten could grow up to be a really ugly puss. This is a big risk. Go for the sure thing. Take a sweet-faced old Tabby.
2. High mileage cats still run great. Used cats aren’t like used cars. They aren’t at a shelter because they are defective or worn out. They may have simply outlived their former owners or been unable to join them at a hospital, nursing home, or new apartment. Some cats get lost and end up at a shelter. And many are brought to a shelter after a family member develops allergies, or an aversion to the family cat. (In those cases, it is the previous owner that is defective, not the cat.)
3. Adult cats aren’t as “chewsy”. Kittens are like human children: everything goes in their mouths. Whether teething or just exploring bits of the world around them, kittens can be very destructive little bundles of fur. Kittens chew on shoes, the corners of books, ear lobes, carpet tassels, electrical cords, drapery strings, plants, and much, much more. Adult cats typically chew less, if at all. They tend to save their energy for more important activities, like tormenting the neighbour’s Terrier.
4. Kittens stumble in blindly, where adult cats fear to tread. Two well-known clichés about cats are: “curiosity killed the cat” and “cats have nine lives.” And curiosity usually leads to the loss of about eight of a kitten’s lives in its first year. Kittens tend to get into much more trouble resulting in accidents and injuries (see, for example, the reference to “chewing electrical cords” above). Kittens eat things they shouldn’t, fall from high places, unsuccessfully attempt to make friends with the neighbor’s tormented Terrier, and generally worry you half to death.
5. Kittens are lacking when it comes to licking. Few kittens have mastered the fine art of self-grooming. While adult cats may spend up to half their waking hours licking fur, kittens are just too busy enjoying life to clean themselves properly. When you consider that kittens are really just dust-mops with legs, and that they generally display marginal litter box etiquette, you might want to master the somewhat dangerous art of cat-bathing.
6. Einstein knew the truth about cats. The genius scientist Albert Einstein discovered an important relationship between mass and energy. He described it using the mathematical equation E=(MC) 2. This equation means that your Energy level (E) is proportional to the Mass (M) of your Cat, twice over. The equation basically shows that if you adopt a cat with more Mass, like an adult cat, your Energy level will be much higher than if you adopt a cat with a low Mass, such as a kitten. This is true because adult cats sleep more, play less, require less supervision, break fewer lamps, and don’t try to bite your toes through the blankets in the middle of the night. With an adult cat, you will sleep better, relax more, make fewer claims on your homeowner’s policy, and enjoy more Energy. There you have it. Are you going to argue with Albert Einstein?
7. Kittens and children don’t mix. Children can be rough on both cats and kittens, even when they mean no real harm. It can’t be helped. It’s just how kids are. When you tell a child that “cats always land on their feet,” the first thing the child will do is drop one from your rooftop to see if it’s true. Adult cats are better equipped to deal with pesky kids. They can generally escape from them, hide, and then contemplate revenge by moonlight.
8. You don’t need to teach an old cat new tricks. Actually, you don’t need to teach a kitten tricks either, because the truth is that neither cats nor kittens allow you to teach them anything anyway. But new parents usually feel the need to try. Inevitably, they end up feeling guilt or failure when the kitten disregards them, jumps on the counters, unrolls the toilet paper, and engages in other acts of feline mayhem. If you adopt an older cat, you avoid all this emotional turmoil. Since you didn’t raise the cat, you don’t have to take responsibility for the cat’s shortcomings. Instead, you can blame the former owner and play the role of victim and saint for tolerating it all.
9. Adult cats don’t “litter” as much. Kittens play, sunbathe, build sandcastles, and even sleep in their litter boxes. And then there’s a game called “poo-hockey,” where a piece of dried waste is removed from the box and batted around the floor until it disappears under a major appliance or piece of furniture. People who adopt older cats happily miss this stage of feline development. Adult cats understand the purpose of a litter box and will usually cooperate with your efforts to keep theirs tidy. But the most important reason to adopt an older cat is:
10. It might be their last chance. Many adult cats end up in shelters due to no fault of their own. Separated from their loved ones, surrounded by other strange cats, confined, confused, and sometimes frightened, many are emotionally devastated by their misfortune. Sadly for adult cats, most people who adopt gravitate toward the adorable, bouncy, big-eyed kittens. Older cats sit by and watch, as one loving family after another passes them over for a cute kitten from this season’s litter.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, KEEP IT OFF,
LOOK YOUNGER & LIVE LONGER
For the following weeks, I will be sharing valuable information on extensive research I have been doing on weight loss, the weight loss industry and all the physical and psychological implications on the topic.
The weight loss industry is a multimillionaire industry with many products in the market claiming to help you lose weight. There is information everywhere, magazines, books, television, internet, etc. But the reality is that every day the rate of obesity is increasing and the weight loss companies are getting richer.
The weight loss industry is taking the lead on how you spend your money to control weight, rather than you questioning what‘s making you gain extra pounds. Your health and your weight should be on your hands not on the hands of the weight loss industry.
Focusing on weight loss alone, the results are rarely permanent. While weight loss is important, it should not be the main goal. It should be a pleasant and a normal by-product of the road to the primary goal: Great Health. Superior health is marked by an exceptionally long and relatively disease-free lifespan. Countless studies reveal that people with superior health are slim.
Learning how to achieve superior health, the ideal weight will follow naturally. First, it is important to understand how physical cravings cause overeating, as well as the psychological factors that can help to change this pattern of consumption. In other words, more than following a diet, it is important to create new, healthy behaviors that will eventually become effortless. This is so highly effective that it enables you to take control of your own health destiny.
Working with my clients, I help them to embrace healthier eating choices to improve their health and as a consequence extra pounds will go away. Let’s get healthier. This week, I would like to help you lose extra pounds. If you have tried three or more different diets, you qualify for a FREE CONSULTATION! I will help you to lose weight, keep it off, increase energy levels, look younger and live longer.
Give me a call to set up your FREE consultation for a permanent change. Results are warranty!

◆ It was the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, who made the following observation: “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.”
◆ Those who study such things say that a rainbow can’t be seen at midday; the optical phenomena are visible only in the morning or in the late afternoon.
◆ In 1982, a radio station in Allentown, Pa., thought its rating could use a bit of a boost, so it came up with a contest: Three contestants, selected at random, would live on top of one of the station’s billboards (portable toilets and sleeping bags were provided). The last one to give up would be awarded a mobile home. The problem was, nobody wanted to give up. The three men who climbed to the top of the sign at the end of September were still there come March 1983. In that month, one of the contestants was arrested for dealing drugs, but the remaining two stayed aloft until May. Once the freezing winter was finally over, the radio station decided to declare both of the men winners.
◆ As the end of the year approaches, you might consider an old British tradition of fortune-telling. Light a candle, place it on the floor and jump over it. If the flame does not go out, you’re likely to enjoy good luck during the coming year.
◆ If you’re like the average American, you use between 75 and 100 gallons of water every day.
◆ The Sahara Desert is nearly as large as the continental United States.***Thought for the Day: “If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.” -- W.C. Fields
IT’S ORNAMENTAL (continued): Lauscha area became involved in the business
of making glass Christmas ornaments either in a home-based foundry or local factory
• Ornaments became highly prized possessions with the special touches of individual craftsmanship. Germany captured the world market for glass Christmas ornaments for many years.
• Another German city, Dresden, near Lauscha, started its own ornament businesses, different from the glass ornaments of their neighbors. The Dresden artists constructed brightly colored designs of birds, fish and other animals out of pressed and embossed paper. Their treasures were a hit as well; for weddings, birthdays and other occasions in addition to Christmas.
• As the decorations gained popularity in the United States, F.W. Woolworth, an early American mass merchandiser, began importing German glass ornaments in the 1880s. By 1890, he was reportedly selling approximately $25 million worth of the ornaments!
• When World War I broke out in 1914 many things, including sentiments toward purchases of Christmas ornaments, changed. There was a backlash against all things German. Sales and production of German ornaments slowed, but only for a while.
• Also, Japan started producing ornaments on a huge scale in the 1920s and took a slice out of the ornament market that Germany held. The Japanese specialized in newer and more colorful designs. The Czech Republic also became known for their fancy Christmas ornaments and shipped many to the U.S.
• More than 250 million Christmas ornaments were being imported to America by 1935, mostly from Germany, Japan, and the Czech Republic. This was when U.S. businessman and German immigrant, Max Eckhardt, an importer of ornaments, knew that America needed to be producing, not just importing.

Say You Saw It In... 10 quick tips for safe snow removal(NC)—Cleaning up after a heavy snowfall is hard work and it requires the right tools and techniques to avoid strains and other injuries.
Jim Webb, an outdoor living specialist for Lowe’s offers 10 tips to remove snow safely:
1. Consult your doctor before the first snowfall to determine if you’re in the proper health to shovel snow. Age, weight, lifestyle, and pre-existing health conditions may prevent you from being able to remove snow without risk of injury.
2. Wear layers that can be removed as you get warm. Clothes should be loose fitting and breathable. Warm, high traction footwear is imperative.
3. Warm up your body with some light calisthenics and stretching
4. Shovel snow early into the snowfall and perform a touch up later on. Removing smaller amounts of snow twice can be less strenuous than tackling the entire snowfall at one time.
5. Invest in a good shovel. Look for one that is sturdy, lightweight, and ergonomically correct.
6. Use a spray oil like Pam, or a household lubricant to coat the blade of your shovel. This will help heavy and sticky snow to slide off.
7. Instead of lifting snow and throwing it, try pushing the snow to where you want it to go. Bend with your knees, not with your back, and avoid twisting through the waist or torso.
8. Apply salt, sand or kitty litter to slippery spots, and to high foot and vehicle traffic areas. This will help prevent slips and falls.
9. Take regular breaks and stay hydrated by drinking water while shoveling.
10. Listen to your body. If you experience light headedness, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, or excessive aches and pains, stop immediately and seek medical attention.

Q: Ever since “GCB” was canceled, I’ve scoured the networks to find some of my favorite actors on other series. I haven’t seen Mark Deklin on anything recently, so I wondered if you could tell me what he is up to. Ñ- Gigi W., via email
A: Mark recently filmed a guest spot on “Castle” (it is episode 10, which is set to air in early January), where he plays a man whose girlfriend is found dead. Later in 2013 (an exact date has not been set yet), you can see Mark on the big screen in a
live-action version of “Tarzan.”Mark told me about the film and his character, John Greystoke: “It’s not the Victorian ‘Tarzan’ that we all grew up with. It’s a modern take on it. My character is almost like a Richard Branson type -- a wealthy but well-intentioned adventurer and entrepreneur. He discovers there’s a serious energy source -- a sort of meteorite, which crashed in Africa -- and he wants to find it.“He brings his family with him, which of course is a stupid decision, but I suppose in the moment it doesn’t seem stupid because he doesn’t go thinking he’s going to die. He ends up unleashing a mystical force that he never could have anticipated, and everything goes south.”
***Q: I just rented “The Queen of Versailles” and was mesmerized by the story of David Siegel, his wife, Jackie, his family, and
his struggle to save his time-share/real-estate business. Do you have any updates on how he is doing now? -- George F., Naples, Fla.
A: David recently made national news when he sent a memo to his employees encouraging them to vote for Mitt Romney in the recent presidential elections. But, politics aside, David was quoted in a Reuters interview this past summer: “We’re the most profitable we’ve ever been.” He also is continuing work on his family’s new home, which is modeled on the Palace of Versailles in France. In fact, just before the movie’s premiere, David filed a defamation suit over the film’s portrayal of his business as failing, asserting that some of the film’s scenes were staged or exaggerated.
***Q: When will “Merlin” return to Syfy? --
Felix S., via e-mailA: Season five of the popular fantasy series, which premieres Friday, Jan. 4, at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy, will be the final season of the show. Executive producers (Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy) promise fans that “Merlin” is “leading to a spectacular finale that draws on the best-known elements of this much-loved story, and brings to a conclusion the battle for Camelot.”
***Q: Will there be an “Avengers” sequel? -- Paul G., Tulsa, Okla.
A: After “The Avengers” smashed all sorts of box-office records this summer, you can bet there will be a sequel. “The Avengers 2” is set to premiere May 1, 2015, with the original cast, as well as some new faces.

TIDBITS® PRESENTS SOME INTERESTING
WINTRY FACTSby Kathy Wolfe
Baby, it’s cold outside! As we head into the season of
cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting
and informative facts about winter.
• Forthoseofusintheno

day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on
either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter
Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about
9.5 hours of daylight.
• Asnowflakestartsoutas
anicecrystalthatfreezes
around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just
one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join
together. There are always six sides, and although
two snowflakes may be
very similar, none are
exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent
on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture
content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of
time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold
weather produces very fin

while temperatures near t

much larger and more complex ones. The average

to the ground.

TIDBITS LOOKS INTO
THE HISTORY OF CURLING ORIGINS
The precise beginnings of curling will always
remain a mystery! However, it is not hard to imagine
a man, hundreds or even thousands of years ago,
who weighed a smooth, heavy rock in his hand,
then watched and listened with fascination as
he launched it along a glistening bed of ice on
a frozen river. This “first curler” must have been
intrigued by the way the rock moved and by the
grumbling sound it made as it tw
isted and turned.
Other people in the not so distant past have heard
this same sound and have applied it as a nickname
for the game of curling ... it is often referred to as
“the roaring game”.
Scots and continental Europeans have engaged
in many a lively dispute as to the true origin of
curling. Both claim to be founders. Did Scots invent
the game, or was it imported by Flemish sportsmen
who emigrated to Scotland during the reign of
James VI (James I of England)? Did Europeans
engage in some early form of curling, and did
Scots merely adopt and enhance it? The evidence,
based on works of art, contemporary writings,
and archaeological finds, has sparked a number of
theories, but nothing is conclusive.

TIDBITS® HEARS THE BELLS TOLL
BELLSby Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits will ring some bells of history! Bells
have been around for many centuries, including
references in the Bible. Long before telephone
ringers, ambulance sirens, internet, emails and
“tweets,” bells summoned the masses for news,
happy and sad.
• Bells are rung at many major life events and
occasions, including weddings and funerals in
some religions. In earlier centuries bells were
also rung to make announcements at community
squares. Many churches ring bells at Christmas
to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
• Ringing of bells and other noisemakers may
have originated with pagans, people who have
“little or no religion.” They used the bells to
scare away evil spirits.

IT’S ORNAMENTAL (continued):• Eckhardt and Bill Thompson of the F.W.
Woolworth Company worked together to convince the Corning Glass Company of Corning, New York to enter the ornament market. Corning had been making thousands of light bulbs out of very thin glass using a “ribbon” glassblowing machine. The machine could produce 2,000 bulbs per minute! Eckhardt believed the machine could be altered to produce Christmas ornaments instead of light bulbs.
• Corning began trials with their equipment and employees, making ornaments in various shapes and sizes. Soon, it was clear they had the equipment and abilities for the job. Woolworth’s requested production of over 230,000 glass holiday items for their stores. In 1939 they began selling the American-made ornaments.
• By 1940, Corning Glass was producing nearly 300,000 decorations per day and shipping them all over the U.S. Corning actually sold most of their ornaments to Shiny Brite, a company owned by Max Eckhardt. Eckhardt’s business was so big, he had four New Jersey locations and his main office and display room in New York City.
FRUIT CAKEFruit cake has been baked as a holiday treat since at least the 16th century – and maybe before. Some
think the same cake has traveled the globe many times and no one wants to eat it!• Fruitcake, sometimes spelled as one word, other times as two, is defined as: “ 1) a rich cake containing
nuts, dried or candied fruits, and spices; also as: 2) a foolish, eccentric, or crazy person.” • The earliest known recipe for fruitcake that exists was from ancient Rome. Among the ingredients
were pomegranate seeds, raisins, and pine nuts, mixed in a barley mash. Later, honey, preserved fruits and spices were added.
• Because fruitcake’s dense consistency and its longevity allowed for it to be held for many days, early hunters and warriors took it with them on long journeys.
• In 16th century Europe, fruitcakes were baked at the end of the nut harvest and saved until the beginning of the following year’s harvest. The thought was that this would help bring another successful harvest the next year. Europeans also referred to fruitcake as plum cake and it was reserved for special occasions because it was so “sinfully rich.” It later became an essential serving for Victorian tea time.
• In 18th century England, a belief arose that if unmarried wedding guests put a slice of fruitcake under their pillow at night they would dream of who they were destined to marry.
• December is National Fruit Cake Month and Claxton, Georgia is the Fruit Cake Capital of the World.

Celebrate More, Stress LessIs the rush, rush, rush of the holiday season giving you a bah-humbug attitude? Now
is the week to take a breather, relax and enjoy what already awaits you and your family in your own community. Discover how busy local elves have been, working all year long to plan a cultural feast of crafts, concerts and colossal events for us all. You also might be inspired to create your own simple versions of holiday delights when you get back home. Here are some ideas to warm up the season:--Treat your family to an early Christmas gift with tickets to a holiday performance in your area.Traditional favorites include “The Nutcracker,” Handel’s “Messiah,” “Amahl and the Night Visitors” and “The Little Match Girl.” Before you attend the performance, familiarize your children with what they will see and hear. Visit your public library for a version in the form of a book, CD or DVD, or check for excerpts online.Enjoy discussing the background of the work, including the historical period it represents. If you are preparing for a musical, listen to a recording and notice your children begin to hum
their favorite melodies. After you attend the performance, encourage your children to produce their own version by pulling out clothes and hats from a dress-up box and re-enacting a favorite scene.--Take in holiday events at historic sites and museums. Make a traditional craft from another country
to decorate your home, prepare a tasty treat that the early pioneers made on wood-burning stoves, or discover how Christmas was celebrated in a 1900s logging or mining camp while you breathe in the brisk winter air on a horse-drawn wagon.--Let music soothe holiday stress right at home.Heat up cups of hot cider and create your own version of “The Twelve
Days of Christmas.” Now hundreds of years old, this yuletide carol continues to delight all ages. Spice up the familiar version and make your own verses such as: 12 grandmas baking, 11 children singing, 10 dads a-shoveling, 9 pairs of mittens, etc.--Let visions of sugar plums dance in their heads.Gather quilts and pillows, and let kids sleep beside your twinkling Christmas tree.

IT’S ORNAMENTAL (continued):• Eckhardt’s Shiny Brite factories continued making glass Christmas balls and
decorations throughout World War II. They used innovative solutions when products were rationed. When metal paints and varnish were not available, the company would use lighter paints and cardboard instead of the usual metal tops and heavy paint.
• In the post-war era, Shiny Brite began using vibrant hues and used metal tops again for their ornaments. They were stamped to show that Shiny Brite ornaments were U.S.- made! The boxes were even marked “American made.” These are valuable collectibles today.
FRUIT CAKE (continued):• Even though fruit cake is and has been the butt
of many jokes for years, Albert Parker saw a fine product with a future when he purchased the Claxton Bakery in 1945.
• The Claxton Bakery was opened in 1910 by Savino Tos, an Italian immigrant who had moved to Georgia from New York City. He operated the bakery until 1945 when he sold the business to Albert, who had worked there since he was 11 years old.
• When Albert noticed that grocery stores were starting to sell fresh bread and other bakery items on their shelves, he knew that he needed to do something to set his bakery apart. He decided to specialize in the “high quality fruit cake” that townspeople had been enjoying during the holiday season each year. In the first year that his company mass produced fruit cakes, Parker and his small crew of employees baked 45,000 pounds (20,412 kg) of Claxton Fruit Cakes!
• Even if you think you don’t like fruit cake, maybe you should try a Claxton specialty. Look for the cakes with a unique horse and buggy label. They are sold by mail order and in many stores every year during the holidays. They are also used for fundraising by more than 1,000 civic organizations in the U.S. The Civitan Club of Tampa, Florida first started the fundraising tradition in the early 1950s.
