ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Shutting people out to avoid distractions, even under a deadline, can cause hurt feelings. Instead, return calls and emails, and explain why you need a zone of privacy for now.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Although your keen Bull’s eyes usually can discern what’s fact from what’s faux, that upcoming decision will need really solid data before you can risk a commitment.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As your confidence grows, you should be able to work toward your goals with more enthusiasm. Open your mind to suggestions. Some of them might even work for you.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Reconnecting with someone from your past stirs up that old sense of adventure. But before you do anything else, be sure to get answers to those still-lingering questions.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some people might resent the way you plan to resolve a difficult situation. But your commitment to making tough but fair decisions soon wins you their respect and support.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Mixed signals could be causing that vexing workplace problem. Before you choose to leave the project, ask for a meeting so you can get things out in the open.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your good intentions could backfire if you’re not careful with other people’s feelings. Try using persuasion, not pressure, to get others to see your side of the situation.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your dedication to finishing the task at hand is laudable. But be careful not to overdo the midnight oil bit. Take time for relaxation with someone very special.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your intuition will help you make some tough choices in the first half of the month, you’ll need more facts to back up your actions later on.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) All that hard work and research in the workplace finally pays off as you hoped it would. Ignore comments from jealous types who are out to get the Goat riled up.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unfair decision creates unnecessary problems. But avoid anger and move carefully as you work this out. Expect to get support from an unlikely source.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A fuzzy financial vista persists until midmonth, when things begin to clear up. You’ll also gain a better perspective on how to handle those pesky personal problems.

General PrecautionsWinter weather condition throughout Canada can become very severe and dangerous, sometimes with little or no warning. High wind-chills, heavy snowfall, freezing rain and extremely low temperatures all pose a serious hazard to anyone traveling or venturing outside. The following general precautions outline how to minimize the effects of winter weather.

Suit up for WinterIt’s that time of year once again when the thermometer dips well below freezing and we bundle up in many layers to stay toasty warm. ✴ Have your children dress in layers. Layers can be added or taken off as the temperature changes.✴ Protect your ears with a toque or head band.✴ Remove wet clothing and shoes as soon as possible to avoid additional freezing.✴ Be aware of the Wind-chill factor

Emergency PreparednessAs winter approaches, it is important to take a few steps to prepare for an emergency during the winter months. Have the following list on hand:

Important Wind-Chill Benchmarks✴ -27⁰C risk of frost bite while out for prolonged periods✴ -35⁰C Frostbite can occur within 10-15 minutes ✴ -40⁰C Frostbite will occur within 10 minutes

✴-60⁰C Frostbite WILL occur within 2 minutes

Infants in infant carriers should NOT be dressed in layers or in thick clothing. Instead, place warm blankets over the infant after he or she is secured in the seat. This makes it easier to regulate their body temperate to avoid over heating (a risks factor for SIDS) . The thick or multiple layers of clothing would compress in a accident and cause the straps to become loose, possibly leading to injuries.

✴ Battery operated radio✴ Spare Batteries✴ Matches/ candles✴ Flashlight✴Drinkable water (3 day supply)

✴ Non-perishable food✴Alternative source of heat (non-electrical)✴ Adequate supply of family medications

◆ “Save egg cartons for children’s painting palettes. It’s very easy to give kids a small amount of many colors, and when they are each in their own cup, they don’t get spread out and run together as quickly. Plus, they are easy to carry.” -- O.L. in Utah

◆ Remove price-tag residue off hard surfaces with hairspray. Or WD40 works well too.

◆ Make your own frozen dinners by purchasing divided trays and using them to store leftovers. Slip each into a plastic bag and label. On busy nights, you can take your favorite out and microwave it.

◆ “A beautiful but stained or worn tablecloth can find a new life at your dinner table. Cut into napkin sizes, and give any frayable ends a hemming.” -- A.S. in Oregon

◆ Here’s a great winter tip that’s double purpose: After your dishwasher has done its job, open the door and let the dishes air dry rather than machine dry. You’ll save on energy, while you add warmth and humidity to your home’s air.

◆ A damp cloth plus baking soda should by your first weapon against stains in the kitchen and bathroom. It’s eco-friendly and a mild abrasive, which works without scratching!

Aero– I am another of the boys l i v i n g in the b a c h e l o r pad. I am

the most affectionate of them all, but please don’t tell my friends. I wouldn’t want to ruin my tough guy reputation among the dudes!

Mick– I like to consider myself the “Mick Jagger” of the bachelor pad. I have a gorgeous grey tabby coat and mesmerizing eyes.

Luka- Hi e v e r y o n e ! Do you like my new do? When I arrived at the shelter

my fur was badly matted and I required a good trim. I am feeling pretty spiffy now and ready to find my forever family. While I am waiting I will be keeping the office staff company and warming their chairs and laps!

Wrigley- I came in with my b r o t h e r Cash. I am a friendly, l o v a b l e

fella who gets along well with other dogs and loves people. I am learning my leash manners with the volunteer dog walkers and am fast becoming a favorite of theirs and the staff as well.

Trudy- So it looks like Santa didn’t get me what I asked for this Christmas. I was such a good girl this year and

all I wanted was a family of my own. I was sure Santa would pull through for me like he did for my friends Hannah, Lily and Sharmyn. They each got adopted just before their 1 year anniversary here at the shelter. I guess I will have to make it my New Year’s resolution to get a family for myself. I am such a sweet, smart girl and I know I would be an awesome addition to any family. I do not care for cats so a feline free home would be the best fit for me.

A r b o r – Hey there! My name is Arbor, I am a y o u n g

fella who spends my days in the bachelor pad with my other single buds. If you are interested in meeting me please ask a staff member to help you.

Walking Your Dog In WinterNo matter what time of year, your dog still needs to be walked. Walking your dog allows it to exercise, pee, and poop. These are all fundamental to a dog’s happiness and well-being. Can you imagine being stuffed inside a house without a toilet all winter long? I think not! However, not all dogs are adequately equipped to handle the piercing, chilly air of winter. As a result, certain steps must be taken to ensure your dog is warm and comfy during his or her daily walk. Cover Them With A JacketSome dogs have thick fur and do not need any additional cover unless you are experiencing a particularly harsh winter. But for small puppies and short-haired dogs, a small, warm jacket or sweater is highly advisable. Make certain the clothing fits your dog well. If it is too loose, your dog will feel a cold draft. If it is too tight, it may cut off your dog’s circulation.

Get Them Some Dog BootsA nice pair of cozy, waterproof dog booties will keep your dog’s paws warm and safe from salty sidewalks. In fact, the salts utilized by city officials can burn through a dog’s paws. Reported reactions to city salt include the licking of paws (should be discouraged!) to incessant barking. Choosing a fit pair of boots for your dog is very important. If they are too loose, you may find yourself having to constantly retrace your steps because a boot fell off.

Stay Away From Metal SurfacesStaying away from metal surfaces is extremely important if you are from a large city such as New York. Many metal gates and manholes have old, corroded electrical wiring underneath them. Because of all the moisture from snow and rain, your dog runs the risk of accidentally electrocuting himself. Although this may sound absurd, believe me when I say that it is a common winter occurrence in big cities throughout the country.

Avoid SnowdriftsIf you run into a snowdrift, your dog is likely to jump headlong into it and go buck wild. Although entertaining to watch, this is actually very dangerous. Snowdrifts tend to form very quickly and cover anything in their path. Of all you know, the snowdrift may be covering a trash bag or two. And trash bags sometimes contain sharp or jagged objects. If your dog really needs a run through some piled up snow, take him to the nearest park instead.

Don’t Overd Do ItKeep winter walks with your dog speedy and brief. There is no need to risk you or your dog suffering from frostbite. Once your dog has handled his ‘business’, bring him back inside.

There is no reason why you can’t take your dog out to walk during winter. All you must do is be safe, follow some basic precautions, and keep your walks brief. So next time winter comes around, don’t keep your dog stuffed inside the house. Let him out for some air!

TIDBITS® PRESENTS SOME INTERESTING

WINTRY FACTSby Kathy Wolfe

Baby, it’s cold outside! As we head into the season of

cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting

and informative facts about winter.

• Forthoseofusintheno

rthernhemisphere,thefirst

day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on

either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter

Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about

9.5 hours of daylight.

• Asnowflakestartsoutas

anicecrystalthatfreezes

around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just

one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join

together. There are always six sides, and although

two snowflakes may be

very similar, none are

exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent

on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture

content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of

time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold

weather produces very fin

e, powdery snowflakes,

while temperatures near t

he freezing point cause

much larger and more complex ones. The average

snowflakefallsattherate

ofabout3.1mph(5km/

hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it

to the ground.

TIDBITS LOOKS INTO

THE HISTORY OF CURLING ORIGINS

The precise beginnings of curling will always

remain a mystery! However, it is not hard to imagine

a man, hundreds or even thousands of years ago,

who weighed a smooth, heavy rock in his hand,

then watched and listened with fascination as

he launched it along a glistening bed of ice on

a frozen river. This “first curler” must have been

intrigued by the way the rock moved and by the

grumbling sound it made as it tw

isted and turned.

Other people in the not so distant past have heard

this same sound and have applied it as a nickname

for the game of curling ... it is often referred to as

“the roaring game”.

Scots and continental Europeans have engaged

in many a lively dispute as to the true origin of

curling. Both claim to be founders. Did Scots invent

the game, or was it imported by Flemish sportsmen

who emigrated to Scotland during the reign of

James VI (James I of England)? Did Europeans

engage in some early form of curling, and did

Scots merely adopt and enhance it? The evidence,

based on works of art, contemporary writings,

and archaeological finds, has sparked a number of

theories, but nothing is conclusive.

TIDBITS® HEARS THE BELLS TOLL

BELLSby Patricia L. Cook

This Tidbits will ring some bells of history! Bells

have been around for many centuries, including

references in the Bible. Long before telephone

ringers, ambulance sirens, internet, emails and

“tweets,” bells summoned the masses for news,

happy and sad.

• Bells are rung at many major life events and

occasions, including weddings and funerals in

some religions. In earlier centuries bells were

also rung to make announcements at community

squares. Many churches ring bells at Christmas

to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

• Ringing of bells and other noisemakers may

have originated with pagans, people who have

“little or no religion.” They used the bells to

scare away evil spirits.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, KEEP IT OFF, LOOK YOUNGER AND LIVE LONGER

Toxins make you gain weight

After the big depression in the 1930’s, food started to be produced in massive quantities. Its purpose was to provide food for everyone and end the famine. But, have this been well accomplished? And how this is connected with the increase of obesity in our society today?

With the use of big machinery, bigger were produced, labor was reduced and people moved to cities. Now, food was easily available and food corporations needed to develop a way to deliver food to the consumers to ensure their profits. In other words, producers needed to extend the shelf life of their products. Every day, more and more options came to the supermarket in the form of packaged and processed food. Everyday more convenience packaged food is available; is this really convenient food for the body or is it more convenient for the food companies?

Of course, it is convenient for the companies not for the body. The body was designed to be nourish only with macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats), and micronutrients (vitamins, proteins and phytonutrients) not with

chemicals.

Processed foods have been prepared with temperatures and procedures where the macronutrients and micronutrients are sacrificed. In addition, processed and packaged foods contain preservatives, food enhancers, colorants, etc. to extend their shelf life.

The SAD diet (Standard American Diet) consists on frozen dinners, packaged and processed foods with no nutrients and considerable amount of chemicals. Since the body is not designed to recognize these chemicals as food, it will try to remove the toxins. When the body gets overloaded with many chemicals (toxins) from food or the environment it uses a secondary mechanism in its attempt to protect the body from damage; it will encapsulate toxins in fat cells.

This theory explains that the more toxic the body is, the more fat cells are needed, and the harder it is to lose weight.

My management program will help you to embrace healthier food choices to help your body rid itself of environmental and food related toxins.

Call today to start your weight management program, lose weight, keep it off and feel more energize! You can achieve any nutrition goal, lose weight, increase energy, sleep better and prevent disease.

◆ It was iconic pop artist Andy Warhol who made the following observation: “Employees make the best dates. You don’t have to pick them up, and they’re always tax deductible.”

◆ The English word “toast” to describe a piece of browned bread comes from the Latin word “tostare,” which means “roasted.” The word “toast” to mean kind words spoken while sharing wine also comes from the same root, though in a roundabout way. In the Middle Ages, wine was not always of the highest quality; as a gesture of goodwill and hospitality to guests, a piece of toast was sometimes added to improve the flavor. Eventually (as vintages improved, one might assume), the browned bread was forgotten and only the words remained.

◆ You might be surprised to learn that the man who was the lead designer for the original GI Joe action figure also designed the inaugural medal for the John F. Kennedy-Lyndon Johnson administration.

◆ If you’re an arachnophobe, it you probably don’t want to know that a tarantula can live for up to two years without eating a thing.

→ On Jan. 7, 1789, America’s first presidential election is held as voters cast ballots to choose state electors. Only white men who owned property were allowed to vote. As expected, George Washington won the election and was sworn into office on April 30, 1789.

→ On Jan. 12, 1928, a young pianist from Kiev named Vladimir Horowitz makes his American debut at Carnegie Hall. Sir Thomas Beecham, guest conductor of the New York Philharmonic, was the headliner, but it was the young Russian pianist playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 who stole the show.

→ On Jan. 11, 1937, nearly two weeks into a sit-down strike by General Motors auto workers at the Fisher Body Plant in Flint, Mich., a riot breaks out when police try to prevent the strikers from receiving food deliveries from supporters on the outside. The melee was later nicknamed the “Battle of the Running Bulls.”

→ On Jan. 10, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Lend-Lease program is brought before the U.S. Congress. It gave the chief executive the power to “sell, transfer title to, exchange, lease, lend or otherwise dispose of ” any military resources he deemed in the ultimate interest of the defense of the United States.

→ On Jan. 8, 1962, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, is exhibited for the first time in America. The painting is a portrait of the wife of wealthy Florentine citizen Francesco del Gioconda.

Say You Saw It In... Five quick tips to save energy at home(NC)—As winter settles in and Jack Frost nips at our noses, energy costs tend to climb. But we don’t have to take drastic measures to reduce sky-high energy bills. Take a look at these simple changes that can be made to everyday routines to put money back in your wallet:

UnplugRid your home of phantom energy by unplugging electronics and gadgets. Even when not in use, appliances like your TV, toaster and computer are on standby mode and still suck energy. To eliminate this waste, unplug your home electronics when they aren’t in use.

Embrace the coldWash and rinse your clothes in cold water. Worried cold water won’t be as effective as hot? Think again. Detergents like Tide Coldwater are specifically designed to work in cold water conditions and are just as effective at removing stains and odours. Better yet, washing with Tide Coldwater can save you $7 per load in energy costs so consider turning down the dial next time you’re washing your clothes. More information is online at tide.ca.

Slow cookingNothing warms the soul better than a home cooked meal that has been simmering all day long. During the winter months, try using a slow cooker instead of the oven. Despite the longer cooking times, slow cookers use less energy than ovens.

Cozy upInstall a programmable thermostat in your home to reduce your energy costs. During the winter months, set the heat a few degrees lower during the day when you aren’t home. For those extra chilly nights, try grabbing a sweatshirt, adding an extra blanket or cuddling up to your loved ones. These options keep you toasty warm and put money back in your pocket.

Let it rainThough a long soak in the tub can be tempting, showers use less energy than baths. For even more energy savings, keep showers short and choose a low-flow shower head.

Q: When can I see my favorite actor, Kevin Bacon, on the big or small screen again? -- Holly T., via emailA: Kevin Bacon can be seen next on the small screen, where he’ll be starring in “The Following” on Fox, which premieres on Monday, Jan. 21, at 9/8c. The series is described as an “intense, spellbinding drama that follows Ryan Hardy (played by Kevin), an ex-FBI agent called out of retirement to track down Joe Carroll (James Purefoy of ‘Rome’), a devious and diabolical

serial killer, and the mastermind behind an ever-growing web of killers.” The series is created, written and executive-produced by Kevin Williamson (“Scream,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Vampire Diaries”), and also stars Maggie Grace (“Lost,” “Taken” and “Breaking Dawn”) and Natalie Zea (“Justified” and “Dirty Sexy Money”).

***Q: Since “Cougar Town” is returning to TV this month on TBS, is there any chance I’ll see my favorite “Scrubs” alum, John C. McGinley, make a guest appearance? -- Mark W., BostonA: I recently spoke with the multitalented actor (who finishes up a run on Broadway with Al Pacino in “Glengarry Glen Ross” this month), and I asked him just that. He told me: “I love Billy Lawrence (‘Scrubs’ and ‘Cougar Town’ creator) more than

anything. Maybe it’ll happen down the road.” For now, if you’re in New York, you can see him treading the boards in person. Or you can wait until Feb. 5 to catch him in the DVD release of the feature film “Alex Cross,” or you can see him on the big screen April 12 in “42” playing Red Barber.Of his role as the legendary baseball announcer, John told me: “Red Barber was an iconic radio pioneer who was kind of the co-inventor of the live [play-by-play sports] broadcast. The film is as much a celebration of one of the great civil-rights stories of the last century as it is a sports story. I’ve seen about 20 minutes of the film, and I just thought it was phenomenal. I haven’t seen the whole film yet, but I can’t wait.”

***Q: With the passing of Larry Hagman in

November, what will become of J.R. Ewing and the future of “Dallas”? -- Marianne E., West Palm Beach, Fla.A: I am sure you agree with me that recasting this iconic role would be pure folly. Larry had filmed several episodes of the new season before he died, with “TV Line” reporting that “Dallas” will bid farewell to J.R., with his funeral taking place during the season’s eighth episode, which is set to air in March.

***Q: When will HBO’s “Game of Thrones” return? -- Paul R., via emailA: The hit fantasy-drama series will return on March 31 with 10 all-new super-size episodes. Each episode will be a few minutes longer than previous seasons’ episodes, with the season finale expected to exceed the allotted 60 minutes.

Make Your Own Jewelry With Paper Beads

Beading your own jewelry continues to be a trend rolling its way back and forth across the country. Stop at most any art fair or peek into a glimmering bead store, and you’ll see exquisite beads from around the world in all shapes and sizes that inspire us to be creative. Actually, there’s nothing new about beading. The popular art form has been around for centuries, passed from one generation to the next. I remember making beads from glossy magazine paper back in kindergarten class. We rolled the bright-colored paper into narrow beads, and wore them around our necks on shoelaces. If you and your kids would like to create some dazzling designs for your own jewelry, here’s how to make paper beads and fashion them into necklaces and accessories. It’s easy!1. Tear out illustrated pages from a magazine, or save a sheet or two from the Sunday comics in your newspaper. Gift-wrap paper also works well. The more colorful the paper, the brighter the beads.2. Cut the paper into long, narrow triangles, approximately 5 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide

at the broad end. 3. To form each bead, carefully roll the triangle around a pencil or sturdy drinking straw (use a large nail or toothpick for narrow beads), beginning with the broad end of the triangle and ending with the pointed end. Glue the point to

the rolled paper. Remove the pencil or straw. Continue until you have a nice collection. Young children may prefer rolling several at a time and coming back to the project later. Let glue dry.To make necklaces, string beads onto bright cording, yarn or string.

Knot ends together. For variation, add buttons, aluminum washers and craft beads between the paper beads. For a brooch or hair clip, use a glue gun to glue several beads together in a row on the top of a jewelry clasp or a plain, flat hairclip.Note: To protect the beads and give them shine, paint over them with non-toxic water-soluble varnish before you string the necklaces or make accessories. It’s also fun to add dots and designs with craft paint from squeeze bottles.
