TIDBITS® CELEBRATES THE
GREY CUPby Janet Spencer
Come along with Tidbits as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup!
• Albert Grey, 4th Earl Grey, was a British nobleman and politician who served as the ninth Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911. He was a big supporter of the arts and sports. In 1909 he commissioned the creation of a trophy for a total cost of $48, which he intended to donate for Canada’s senior amateur hockey championship. When he was beat to the punch by the donation of the Allan Cup for that purpose, he instead gave the trophy to the national championship of Canadian football.
• After promising the trophy, however, he procrastinated on placing the order, with the result that it wasn’t ordered until two weeks before the first championship game. The first Grey Cup game was held on December 4, 1909, and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Parkdale Canoe Club 26 to 6 before a crowd of 3,800 spectators. The trophy wasn’t ready for presentation following the game, and the victors didn’t end up receiving it until the following March.
• 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup, which is a little odd considering the first Grey Cup was held in 1909. However, play was suspended from 1916 to 1918 due to World War I, and in 1919 due to a rules dispute.

◆ Medication labels can fade, so when you get yours, put a piece of clear tape over the instructions. This way, you’ll always be able to read the instructions.
◆ “During the holidays (the height of baking season for me), I keep a large plastic saltshaker filled with flour and a bit of dry rice. The rice helps the flour to shake out without getting clumped up, and I use it to dust cake pans, rolling pins, kneading boards, etc.” -- W.F. in Canada
◆ “One of the household cleaners I prefer comes in a spray bottle, and it’s on the expensive side. I make sure to get all of the liquid out by adding some regular glass marbles to the bottle. The marbles displace the liquid, ensuring it finds the bottom of the sprayer’s suction tube.” -- T.H. in Mississippi
◆ “Stack hockey pucks in the holes of a cardboard soda six-pack carrier. Tell your coach. And to keep them bouncy, store them in your freezer (as long as your mom says it’s OK).” -- Eric, via e-mail
◆ Keep the fog off your glasses by cleaning them with shaving cream. It will prevent mist-ups when you come in from the cold.
◆ Save your citrus peels and dry them to use for kindling in your fire. They contain flammable oils, and they smell pretty good, too.
GREY CUP (continued):• The first Grey Cup was awarded in 1909. When the Hamilton Tigers won the Cup in 1915, they added their name to it not only for the year 1915, but also for the year 1908—a year before the Cup had even been invented, in order to give the appearance that their team had won the first Grey Cup.• The trophy consists of a sterling silver chalice which is attached to a large base. The original base was made out of wood, with silver shields embedded in it. Each shield listed the championship year and the winning team’s name. The base was redesigned in 1987, and is now made of black-lacquered aluminum. The engraved silver plates attached are etched with the names of each winning team’s players and executives. The trophy will run out of room for new additions following the 2012 Grey Cup, at which time the base will be redesigned, while retaining a similar look to its current design. The chalice is made of sterling silver and stands 33 centimetres (13 in) tall, while the base stands 84 centimeters (33 in) high.THE TROPHY• Members of the winning teams are allowed to take the trophy with them to celebrate, either in their home town or on tour. It’s accompanied by a designated member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame at all times, however, and it’s the trustees of the Hall of Fame who control it for public appearances and rental events. However, there have been some mishaps with the Cup.• The trophy has been broken several times: in 1978, it was dropped by celebrating Edmonton Eskimos players; in 1987, an Eskimos player sat on it; in 1993, Edmonton’s Blake Dermott head-butted it; and in 2006, the trophy broke away from its base as the BC Lions celebrated their victory.
• In 1947, the Grey Cup was on display with many other trophies at the Toronto Argonaut Rowing Club when the building caught fire. Many of the other trophies were lost entirely or damaged beyond repair, but when the shelf holding the Grey Cup collapsed into the flames, the trophy caught on a nail when it fell, saving it from certain doom in the flames. It received only minor damage.• The Grey Cup has been stolen twice. In 1967 it was taken from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as a prank, and in December, 1969 it was stolen from the offices of the Ottawa Rough Riders at THE

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your work requires increased effort during the next few days. But it all will pay off down the line. Things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and/or friends.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your genuine concern for others could prompt you to promise more than you can deliver. It’s best to modify your plans now, before you wind up overcommitted later.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A situation that seems simple at first glance needs a more thorough assessment before you give it your OK. Dig deeper for information that might be hidden from view.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Careful: Right now, things might not be quite what they appear. Even the intuitive Crab could misread the signs. Get some solid facts before you act on your suspicions.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels are high, allowing you to complete those unfinished tasks before you take on a new project. A social invitation could come from an unlikely source. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might think you’re helping, but unless you’re asked for a critique, don’t give it. If you are asked, watch what you say. Your words should be helpful, not hurtful.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your attempt at mediating disputes might meet some opposition at first. But once you’re shown to be fair and impartial, resistance soon gives way to cooperation.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Go ahead. Reward yourself for helping settle a disturbing workplace situation. On another note: A personal relationship might be moving to a higher level.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A sudden change of heart by a colleague might create some momentary uncertainty. But stay with your original decision and, if necessary, defend it.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rely on a combination of your sharp instincts along with some really intense information-gathering to help you make a possibly life-changing decision.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Instead of worrying if that new person in your life will stay or leave, spend all that energy on strengthening your relationship so it becomes walk-out resistant.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden financial dry spell could reduce your cash flow almost to a trickle. But by conserving more and spending less, you’ll get through the crunch in good shape.

Lily - 3.5 year old spayed collie crossI have been living at the h u m a n e society since D e c e m b e r
2011, but I don’t let that get me down. Like the sign says, “Be Pawsitive” and I am! I know the perfect fit is out there somewhere, we just haven’t met each other yet. I have lovely golden eyes that once I trust you, will gaze lovingly into yours forever more. Until then I am waiting patiently for you to find me, but please don’t make me wait too long. I do suffer from very mild seperation anxiety, so a home with another dog (preferably a male) would suit me best, not having someone around me is hard on my heart. I am interested in cats but would likely just be in it for the “chase” and wouldn’t actually want to catch one. I’m a high energy girl that needs her exercise but what I need the most is just to be at your side. I am a great girl!
Lady - 7 year old spayed Shepherd.I am an older girl but would love to go for
a stroll with you a couple of times a day. I do have the beginnings of arthritis but my friends here at the shelter give me glucosamine tablets twice a day. I haven’t been around a lot of kids but the ones I have met I liked just fine. Cats are a bit different and I might do better in a house without them. I get very excited around other dogs but if you are patient with me I can make friends. I wait to meet you!
Trudy - 3 year old spayed Foxhound cross. My pictures just don’t do me justice. Everyone who sees me says
I’m just the coolest looking dog ever! You know that expression, “all ears”? Well, I think it was coined after me! I do not do well with cats but I have had a few playmates during my stay so we could plan a “meet and greet” if you already have a dog. I’m house trained and walk well on a leash. Don’t forget to call....we’ll do lunch.
Doja - 3 year old neutered DSH. I am a happy, confident boy
that pretty much has it all. I’m super friendly and very social. I’m also quite curious about my surroundings. I’ll be as happy living with a family of any age as I would be just one person. I’ve spent some time in Bobby’s room with 5 other cats, so chances are that I’d be able to make friends with any friendly ones you have at home. Are you getting the idea of how awesome I am? I thought so. See you soon!
Alfie - I was recently told that black cats are the MOST affectionate
of all cats. Who am I to question this wisdom. I will give you all the cuddles and head butts you can handle. My family had to surrender me because the cat I shared my home with was a bit of a bully. I have a huge heart and just want to have a family to call my own to share it with.
Not a Matter of Black (and White)At shelters across North America, black dogs and cats are usually the last ones to be adopted. Why, you may ask, would the colour of a pet make so much of a difference in the animal’s chance at being picked first or last? A black cat purrs just as well as an orange cat, and a black dog is just as loyal as one that is brown. You would think that a pet’s personality would trump the colour of its coat any day, however sadly, this not often the case with black animals. On average, a black cat or dog waits at the Moose Jaw Humane Society three to five times longer than a more colourful pet, in hopes of finding their forever home. There are several theories that may help to explain this phenomenon. The first and most dismissible is that superstition may be involved, especially with reference to felines. Everyone knows that black cats are historically known as “bad luck” and one should strive to not have a black cat cross their path. Black cats also have the reputation of being the familiars of witches and such, and have centuries-old associations with dark magic and secret rituals. This can easily be debunked as pure myth, as black cats are no different than any other coloured kitties, and to the best of our knowledge, possess no special magical powers. For their canine counterparts, black dogs are often portrayed in movies and television as being mean, vicious, or otherwise predisposed to unpleasantness. Again, this is Hollywood fabrication at its best! Why, small white poodles can be more ill-mannered than your average black lab cross at any given time, proving that colour is just hair-deep.Another reason that it is suspected why black animals are harder sells is because in the often dim shelter lighting, they do not show as well to potential adoptive families as pets that are lighter in colour. Have you ever tried to take a good photo of a black animal? Without proper lighting and a bit of luck, it is extremely difficult to truly show off a handsome or pretty pet’s face because of the darkness of their hair colour. And unfortunately, first impressions go a long way, so whether it is a picture of a black dog on a website, or seeing a black cat in a kennel at the shelter, the first look might be the last look too, if the animal isn’t visible enough to display themselves to prospective adopters. Also, it’s hard to be distinct and unique if you look exactly like five other cats or dogs in the adoption room. People like variety, and it seems that it may only be natural to cruise past the “sameness” of the black animals and have one’s eye caught by a brown and white spotted dog or a calico cat that is more “one-of-a-kind”. In shelter circles, there is even a name for this effect, “Big Black Dog Syndrome”; an over-abundance of large, black dogs, which look very similar in appearance and get passed over for looking too much like the dog beside them in the next kennel. “BBDS” can strike at any time, at any shelter, and it’s not uncommon to find the same predicament across the country in other humane societies. The last, and most probable reason as to why there are so many black dogs and cats at shelters, is most likely due to the fact that there are simply more black animals around in the first place than their lighter relatives. The black animal gene pool seems huge in comparison to dogs and cats that are of other colours, and it’s not necessarily that these black animals are overly prolific, but rather, they may simply be the victims of irresponsible pet owners who failed to have them spayed or neutered. The Labrador Retriever is one of, if not the most popular dog breeds in Canada, but people who breed them irresponsibly and then indiscriminately sell them to other irresponsible dog owners contribute to a large part of the problem.

The Trophy (continued)Lansdowne Park. The thieves demanded a ransom for return of the trophy, but the CFL refused to pay and announced they planned to replace it with a duplicate instead. A couple of months later, the police received an anonymous tip that led them to a pay phone. The pay phone contained a note and a key which led them to a locker in Union Station. In the locker they found the undamaged trophy. The thieves were never caught. By the time the original trophy was returned, the CFL had already commissioned a replica for a total cost of $550. The original trophy now resides at the Hall of Fame except for when it’s presented to the winning team.• In 1984, Winnipeg Blue Bombers general manager Paul Robson accidentally forgot the Grey Cup, leaving it behind following a celebration at the Winnipeg Arena. When he rushed back to find it, the trophy was still sitting right where he left it, surrounded by a dark empty stadium.
THE FESTIVAL• Every year, the city hosting the championship organizes events as part of the
annual Grey Cup celebration. Concerts, parties, parades, awards ceremonies, beauty pageants, and festivals are held in the days prior to the game.
This is now often called Canada’s “Grand National Drunk.” The tradition started in 1948. Hundreds of Calgary Stampeders fans wearing full western regalia flocked to Toronto to support their team. They brought chuckwagons and horses, square danced in the streets, and organized a pancake breakfast (a staple of the Calgary Stampede) much to the befuddlement of Torontonians. Calgary won for the first time ever, completing the only undefeated season in the history of Canadian pro football. The boisterous celebrations that followed included Calgary politician Don Mackay riding his horse through the lobby of the Royal York Hotel (an event that will be recreated for the 2012 game.) The Calgary Grey Cup Committee began hosting a pancake breakfast every year after that, and the festival grew from there. • Incidentally, the Stampeders won this game on the strength of the “sleeper play”, a touchdown scored by Norm Hill after he hid himself from the Ottawa defense by lying down on the sidelines, as if asleep. He received the pass from quarterback Keith Spaith while still on his back.

Create a timeless look in your home(NC)—Like fashion, interior design trends change with the seasons. Each month, different colours and patterns become the new “it” look, inspiring us to overhaul our home décor.
Keeping up with the latest looks can be challenging, not to mention expensive. That’s why it’s important to remember that keeping your home décor modern isn’t so much about buying trendy furniture as it is about being practical. Invest in timeless pieces that are suited to your lifestyle and create a calm environment.
Delta Faucet, a leader in beautifying home interiors, offers the following tips to make sure your space will always feel fresh:
Choose multi-functional products with hidden technology and beautiful design to create a modern feel. Think televisions hidden in cabinets, speakers mounted behind the wall, and sleek kitchen faucets with a hidden sprayer. Technology that seamlessly blends into a space will always feel new.
Consider incorporating accessories in shades such as clean green, saffron, ocean blue, and magenta to create a soothing atmosphere that will never feel tired.
“Adding sleek pieces in a colour that you’ll always love – rather than a trendy colour – makes your style timeless, not to mention wallet-friendly,” says Jo Alcorn, a Toronto-based interior design expert.
Update fabrics to those that feature timeless geometric designs, overlapping layers, or stripes. All of these can instantly make a home more contemporary without a large investment.
Sleek and simple architectural details add maximum design impact and can become the focal point in any room.
“Paying attention to your hardware including cabinet handles, light fixtures and even faucets can play a huge role in making your place look more modern,” says Alcorn. For instance, the strong, angular lines of the Vero lavatory faucet bring a sense of urban sophistication to the bathroom. See more at deltafaucet.ca. When considering furniture, look for pieces with glass or painted wood, and materials like coloured acrylic, fibreglass, and chrome. These features will ensure your choices stand the test of time.
Nothing dates a space like clutter. Organize and store - or even neatly display - magazines, newspapers, and books. Electronic cords should be off the floor and not visible to keep your room looking neat and clean.

Is your car ready for the deep freeze?(NC)—Winter is a beautiful time to experience Canada. Unfortunately, it can also be a dangerous time, particularly when you are driving. Icy roads can be treacherous, and a dead battery can leave you stranded.
“Keeping your car in top form is especially important in winter,” says Jeff Burke, president & CEO at Western Financial Group, an organization with services to protect individuals and families in this part of Canada. “Inspect your vehicle thoroughly before heading out onto the road, and make sure you have adequate insurance coverage.”
Car Care Canada’s website shares these winter maintenance tips:
Check the battery. If it is four years old or older, have it checked at a service station to make sure it will start in bitter temperatures.
Check the fluids. Top up power-steering, brake and transmission fluid; oil; and antifreeze/coolant. (Antifreeze/coolant should be flushed and refilled every two years or 50,000 kilometres.) Replace your windshield fluid with one specially formulated to cut through ice and snow.
Consider winter weight oil. Consult your owner’s manual to see if a winter weight oil is recommended for cold months, and remember to change your oil every 5,000 kilometres.
Check the function of your heater, defroster, lights and windshield wipers. Replace your wiper blades every six months, and consider the added power of winter blades.
Change to snow tires. Traction is essential when you are driving on snow and ice. Winter tires offer traction, peace of mind and – often – a discount on your car insurance premium.
Repair cracks or dings in your windshield. Freezing temperatures can turn small nicks into gaping cracks that destroy your windshield. Have them repaired before it’s too late.
Keep your gas tank at least half full. A fuller tank resists moisture/ice formation inside your gas line.
Be well-equipped. Keep these items in your vehicle in case of emergency: snow brush/ice scraper, booster cables, flashlight, first-aid kit, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, snacks and necessary medications.

Q: I love MTV’s original comedy “Awkward.” I missed some episodes of season two. Is it on DVD yet? Also, where there be a third season? A: You’re in luck on both counts. Aside from being able to watch full episodes on hulu.com and mtv.com, seasons one and two are available on DVD. The show has been granted a super-size season three, which will consist of 20 episodes instead of the previous 12 episodes each of the previous two seasons. Look for season
three to premiere in summer 2013.
***Q: I just heard about the death of one of my favorite directors, Tony Scott. I couldn’t find any information on the definite cause or reason for his death. Do you know what happened? -- Felix S., Vancouver, British ColumbiaA: The results of Tony’s autopsy were recently released, with the cause of death being multiple blunt-force injuries, which were sustained when he jumped off a Los Angeles bridge on Aug. 19. The official ruling is suicide, as no foul play was suspected or discovered. There was also no evidence of an inoperable brain tumor -- as some sources were citing as the reason he killed himself -- putting to rest those rumors that his family vehemently denied from the get-go.
Tony, who was 68 at the time of his death, had recently announced his intent to develop a “Top Gun” sequel, and was with Tom Cruise just days prior to his death scouting locations for the movie. There is no word yet on whether the movie will be made without Tony.
***Q: “Assassin’s Creed” is one of my favorite video games, and my roommate heard that it’s going to be made into a movie. Is that true? -- Douglas W., via e-mailA: Development of a big-screen version of the popular video game is moving forward, with Michael Fassbender set to star as Desmond Miles, a man who comes from a long line of assassins but tries to lie low and maintain a more common lifestyle as a bartender. Since it’s still early in the development process, there’s no word on
co-stars or a release date. However, I can tell you that it will be shot in 3-D.
***Q: My husband and I are curious as to what happened to Lisa, who was one of the “Ice Road Truckers” on the History Channel last year. We’re hoping she didn’t crash. -- Bonnie and George H., via e-mailA: Lisa Kelly is alive and well, and taking a year off. Producer Thom Beers told a group of reporters: “We offered her a contract to return, and she chose not to. (We’d) love to have her, (but) she’s taking a year off. The thing we liked about her more than anyone else -- she’s the one person of them all who showed real fear. I wish her luck, and I wish she was back.”

• A 2012 survey found that Canadians consider the Grey Cup to be the most important annual event to attend. The influx of people from across the country is estimated to have an economic impact of over $120 million for the region hosting the championship game.
THE WIND BOWLIn the 53rd Grey Cup in 1965, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats were up against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but the weather wasn’t cooperating. With wind speeds up to 64 km/hr (40 mph), the team punting with the wind was at a great advantage. Officials enacted a new rule on the spot: Punts going into the wind would be ruled dead as soon as they were touched, in an enforced Fair Catch rule. Still, all scoring occurred with which ever team was going with the wind. Hamilton won, 22-16.
Punched-Tin Can Candle Holders It’s time to start saving tin cans for this gift-giving idea for the holidays. Your eco-friendly school-age kids
not only will like the recycling aspect of this punched tin tealight candle holder, but they’ll also have a great time pounding nails into the tin and ice to create an imaginative design.Think Thanksgiving home decor, too. Choose fall-themed images to create, like a maple leaf, gourd and pilgrim ship to brighten your Thanksgiving centerpiece. Here’s the stuff you’ll need for one candleholder:--Plain tin can with label removed and all rough edges pinched flat and smooth. I use the smooth-sided 11-ounce Geisha brand mandarin orange cans for this project because they don’t have multiple ridges or grooves.--Nail--Hammer--Water--Towel--Permanent black felt-tip marker --Thin ribbon to decorate the outside of the can. --Household glue
Here’s the fun:1. Fill the can near to the top with water and place in your freezer to freeze.2. When frozen solid, remove, wipe off frost on the outside of the can and dot design on the outside opposite the seam using the permanent marker. You may wish to draw the outline of a leaf or pumpkin for Thanksgiving. For December holidays draw a pine tree, holly, star, bell, menorah, 2013 or other festive holiday symbol. Choose shapes that are easy to create dot to dot. Leave space near
the top rim and base for adding ribbon.3. Place the can on its side on the towel. Carefully hammer out the design by positioning the nail on each of the dots and hammering it through the tin until it hits the ice. (The ice prevents the nail from bending the tin,) Continue punching holes until you have completed your pattern.4. Run warm water over can until ice melts. Remove ice and dry can.5. Attach ribbon to the can with glue.
Set a t-light candle in the center of the can and light.Note: Adults should be present when lighting candles.
