TIDBITS® REMEMBERS
CLASSIC TOYSby Kathy Wolfe
At this time of year when we are bombarded with ads for a wide variety of toys, Tidbits looks at those toys that have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, as well as some of our other favorites. •America’sNationalToyHallofFame, located
in Rochester, New York, was established in 1998. It honors those toys and games that have maintained their popularity over many years. In order to qualify for admission, the toy must be “widely recognized, respected, and remembered,” and foster learning and creativity. In addition, it must be more than a passing fad and show innovation. Toys in the Hall are not necessarily brand-name items. For example, the kite, bike, jump rope, rocking horse, and jigsaw puzzles are included. Checkers, yo-yos, jacks, and doll houses are all inductees, along with an item nearly child has played with, the cardboard box, a source of endless creativity.

But try to take some quiet time ‘twixt those glittering galas to spend with some very special people.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While the current round of holiday revels has your social life on the fast track, someone special might want to keep pace with you next year, as well.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Enjoy all the fun you deserve at this holiday time. However, don’t lose sight of the need to check out some of the changes the new year is expected to bring.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) What happens during this holiday time can help clear up some of the confusion jeopardizing a once-stable relationship. Follow your instincts on what to do next.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your holidays are brightened by new friends eager to become part of your life. ◆ “Digital picture books are very easy to make these days, and they make great gifts. But here’s a way we use our digital photos to keep the kids engaged at family gatherings. Each family prints out a selection of photos. We let the kids make their own books using half sheets of paper, glue and markers. They design frames, etc. After they have several pages done, we tie them together and make a cover of heavy cardstock. It’s a great take-home craft, a special souvenir for visitors and it gets them talking about family moments.” -- R.E. in Alabama
◆ Want to mix it up a bit with your traditional chocolate chip cookies? Try rolling them in different types of chopped nuts or sprinkles. Even crushed pretzels are really good. Or change the flavor of the chip. Add minced dried fruit, quick oats or other seeds for a change of taste. Melt chocolate chips and dip one side in it, then let dry on waxed paper. Endless possibilities!
◆ At a loss for what to do with Christmas cards from years past? Why not make a wreath? Cut out a large ring from a cardboard box or other sturdy material. Arrange cards at different angles around the circle. Add decorative holiday picks or sprays, and ribbon or bow for depth.
◆ Having a holiday party? Put food and drinks in separate areas, as these are places that guests tend to linger. With different stops for each, guests will not bunch up in one place trying to do both, and it actually encourages mingling!

Cold Weather TipsBrrrr—it’s cold outside! The following guidelines will help you protect your companion animals when the mercury dips.
1. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.
2. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.
3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm, dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.
4. Thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.
5. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.
6. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
7. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.
8. Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him, and his fur, in tip-top shape.
9. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
10. Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, KEEP IT OFF, LOOK YOUNGER AND LIVE LONGER
Change your mind to change your eating choices
Neuroscience has proven that thoughts get materialized in the brain and become part of you. Your thoughts define who you are, and also influence yourdecisionmaking. If we apply this neuroscience principle to nutrition, we could say that in the brainthereareencodedthinkingpathsof how you think about food. Thesethinking paths determine your foodchoices. Think about the following, someonewho is born in Japan has different food choices than someone who is born in a westerncountrylikeCanadaortheUSA.The SAD (Standard American Diet)consists mostly of high portions of animal products, low portions of fruits and vegetables, as well as processed andpackagedfoods.Thethinkingpathson western culture are around these foods choices, unfortunately these food choices are causing obesity and many other health concerns. We need to change thewaywe thinkabout food to be able tomake bettereating choices, improve our health and lose weight.

In other words if you are convince that the way you are eating is not giving you the health and weight you desire, then change the way you think about food and you will enjoyexcellent health and manage your weight.Change your mind to change youreating choices, stop dieting, lose weight, keep it off, look younger andlive longer. As a natural nutritionist and a life coach, I have helped clients to change the way they think about food tomake betterfood choices and as a result their health improved and they lost weight. As I mentioned on our previous article, losing weight should not be the main goal, it should be a pleasant and a normal by-product of the road to the primarygoal:GreatHealth.

The crew even saw emergency flares fired from the liner, but they thought it was part of a celebration rather than a signal of distress.

Tis’ the season to get organized
(NC)—Resolve to de-clutter and organize your home in 2013. Starting the New Year with a clean, defined space will make your home seem bigger and improve the efficiency of your household.
“An organized home can help streamline day-to-day tasks – from preparing meals to getting dressed to paying bills,” said Anikka Foster, Associate Vice President, Home Décor, Home Organization and Electronics, Canadian Tire Corporation. “Home owners often think that they don’t have extra space for storage, but with a little creativity and the right products, you can maximize the space and efficiency in any home whether it’s a house or an apartment. From bins to totes to closet systems, Canadian Tire has stylish and affordable home storage and organization solution for all Canadians.
Many homes lack the space needed to properly store items that are only used once or twice a year. Here are some tips on how to creatively store off-season items that will maximize every inch of space while making it easy to quickly retrieve what you need.
Look up. Maximize wall and ceiling space by using shelves and ceiling racks. This is particularly useful in the garage and basement where it’s important to keep tools, sports
equipment and lawn and garden accessories off the ground to make space for the family vehicle(s).
Don’t get boxed-in. Use modular storage systems to create customizable storage that’s unique to each space throughout the home. You can easily adapt the system to your changing storage and organization needs.
Identify untapped storage spaces. Is there space under the stairs or under the bed? If so, these are perfect spaces to store items that are used less frequently. Look for storage bins specifically sized for these hard-to-fit areas.
Find double-duty furniture. When purchasing new furniture for the home, look for pieces that offer functional storage like ottomans with lids, benches with baskets, wardrobes or closed entertainment units. You can get the style you’re looking for while also creating more places to store your things.
Start small: Build your organizational confidence by tackling one space at a time. Start with something simple like organizing the junk drawer and slowly move your way around the rest of the room.

Q: When will “Portlandia” return for another season? -- Susanna Y. in FloridaA: The third season of the ingenious comedy premieres on IFC on Friday, Jan. 4, at 10 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back episodes. The 10-episode series stars Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein and Kyle MacLachlan. They’ll be joined by a slew of notable guest stars, including Chlo‘ Sevigny, Roseanne Barr, Rose Byrne, Bill Hader, Juliette Lewis and more.
***
Q: I can’t wait to see what’s next when “Revenge” returns from its winter break. Do you have any scoops? -- Bridget W., via e-mailA: Everyone involved with “Revenge” is either very good at keeping secrets, or they don’t know what’s going to happen from week to week. I spoke recently with series guest star Michael Nardelli (as Trey Chandler), and he wasn’t divulging much.“So far, I’ve done the three episodes, and it seems like it’s going to go on,” Nardelli said. “I have no idea what they have in store. ... They’re very secretive, but I am hopeful that Trey will return.”You can catch Michael on the big screen in “The Collection,” which comes from the people who did “Saw,” so you can bet that sucker is pretty scary. He also produced “The Giant Mechanical Man” -- starring
Jenna Fischer (“The Office”) and Chris Messina (“The Mindy Project”) -- which is available on DVD. I watched it the other day, and I can say that it’s one of those breath-of-fresh-air indie movies that deserves more of an audience.
***Q: When will “Southland” return? -- Jimmy U., ChicagoA: The fifth season of TNT’s hit police drama returns Feb. 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Joining the show as a series regular is former guest star C. Thomas Howell. Also, “One Tree Hill” star Chad Michael MurrayÊis set to guest star in a two-episode arc.
***Readers: I have had numerous inquiries as to when season three of “Downton Abbey” premieres on PBS, and I am happy to say that the date has been set: Sunday,
Jan. 6. According to the folks at PBS, “The Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues and personal crises grip the majestic English countryside.”And one of the reasons I love my job is that I recently received my press screener of the series, and I can tell you that this season is one not to miss. Not only is guest star Shirley MacLaine -- portraying Martha Levinson, Cora’s mother -- a welcome addition, the rest of the cast is back and better than ever. So, it’s no wonder that the series has been renewed for a fourth season, which will begin shooting in a few months and will air in January 2014.

The Gift of Travel Keeps on GivingLooking for a holiday gift that lasts, strikes a chord with the recipient
and whose newness doesn’t wear off before the gift wrap lands in the recycle bin? Think travel! Create an adventure in 2012 for your family and meet up at your destination with grandparents and other relatives who share with you the excitement of discovery and making memories together.Multigenerational travel is on the move. Just ask Wendy Weigel, a seasoned traveler with her own family and vice president of travel services for AAA Minneapolis. “The gift of travel with the extended family is also a gift of family time,” she says. “In this challenging economy, people want value in what they spend and give. The opportunity to play, learn about other cultures and experience closeness with far-flung family members is important. And when the trip is over, the stories live on forever in the minds of the kids.” To get started, she suggests families talk about their top interests as a group and how they want to spend their time together: Do we want to go rafting? Stay at a condo at a ski resort? Visit a dude ranch? “When all is put on the table, taking a cruise is currently a top vacation pick for bringing everyone together and providing unfettered
family time,” she says.I discovered the multigenerational trend recently as we sailed away from Port Canaveral, Fla., as a guest on the new Disney Dream to historic Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, in the Caribbean. Infused with Disney magic, the nonstop fun offered on-board entertainment for every age. “The cruise director sets the stage with limitless
creative activities, and it’s the families that make the fun,” said Arlene Moore from Kansas, as she toasted her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband, two sons and their families. “It’s a thrill seeing my grandchildren enjoying themselves with their
cousins, aunts, uncles and grandfather. We can do whatever interests us during the day, meet at the theater for an early-evening, Broadway-style performance, then gather around a big table for dinner to share all of our experiences ... oh, and no one has to wash dishes. For me, that’s magic,” she adds.If the gift of multigenerational travel is stirring in your mind this holiday season, take a look online for opportunities that fit your interests, and visit a professional travel agent to help you coordinate the details.
