In 1923, a challenge was sent tothe people of Moorestown that if they raised enough money to op-erate a community center for thetown, an anonymous donor, laterrevealed to be Eldridge Johnson,would donate $250,000 to build thecenter. The residents came to-gether and raised just more than$106,000 to operate the center, nowknown as the Moorestown Com-munity House.

Since its conception, the Com-munity House has continued toserve the original purpose it wasbuilt upon, as its mission to serve

the community has not changed.The original operating budget,which has since been called thepermanent maintenance fund,grew until recently when, due tothe changing trends in society,and the recession in 2007, it dwin-dled. The 1920s building is nowalso in need of a restoration.

Moorestown High School’s In-teract Club is hosting the thirdannual Acappella for Autismshow on April 25 from 7 p.m. to 10p.m. at Moorestown High School.This is an interscholastic singingcompetition created to benefit the

nonprofit organization AutismNew Jersey. Seven high school acappella groups from the areawill compete for several awardsin this exciting musical night.

“The show serves three purpos-es. It provides a way for local highschool a cappella clubs to per-form, raise money for AutismNew Jersey and raise awarenessof autism for Autism AwarenessMonth,” said Jessica Fan, MHS

junior and Acappella for Autismcommittee member.

Three years ago, Acappella forAutism was started after the In-teract Club did a talent show formany years and wanted to dosomething new. It wanted to getmore people and high schoolsfrom the area involved for a goodcause.

“We decided to try somethingnew and involve more highschools within the area. So basi-cally, high school a cappellagroups come from around thearea, and they compete againsteach other. It is a competition aswell as a performance,” Fan said.

I wrote this note out of frustration withthe road conditions on and near the 600block of North Church Street. It is truly aconcern with how much our house shakesand vibrates along with the window rat-

What’s that? It’s Church Street ground giving way.

Holes and gullies all around,

Heavyweight trucks speeding down.

“Just flying though,” I hear them say,

With kids around in danger’s way.

Windows cracking, furniture shaking,

Feels like there’s a quake awakening.

Who’ll address the problem at hand?

Someone must, someone can!

County or township – where do I go?

Which extension? How the heck do I know?

No! Call this bureau. No! Call that man.

Someone help… surely someone can!

Five years ago, back in 2010, Gov.

Christie won a political battle,

enacting a 2 percent cap on mu-

nicipal tax levies. The law limited

property-taxing budget increases to a

maximum of 2 percent –with some ex-

ceptions – down from 4 percent, lest

they be subject to public vote.

While some argued at the time

whether the cap would work, or

whether it was another political ploy,

the data says it has had a positive ef-

fect.

Since the cap was enacted, property

taxes rose 2.4 percent on average in

2011, 1.6 percent in 2012, 1.3 percent in

2013 and 2.2 percent in 2014. From 2004

to 2006, property taxes increased at

least 7 percent each year.

That’s data we can stand behind, but

now, five years after the cap’s enaction,

more needs to be done. It’s not simply

good enough that property tax increas-

es have leveled off; we need to find a

way to reduce the property tax burden

on our residents.

While the increase last year was

only 2.2 percent, New Jersey’s average

property tax bill rose to the highest its

ever been – to $8,161 on average, ac-

cording to Department of Community

Affairs data. The average property tax-

payer paid an additional $173 in prop-

erty taxes last year, up from an average

total of $7,988 in 2013.

Here’s some more ugly data...

• Only 0.2 percent of homeowners in

the U.S. paid more than $8,000 last year

in property taxes – which is lower

than our state average.

• New Jersey collects $3,000 per capi-

ta in property taxes. Seventy-nine per-

cent of American homeowners paid

less than $1,750 last year, and only 3

percent paid more than $4,000.

Christie’s property-tax cap was

never going to fix the problem of New

Jersey’s high property taxes; it wasn’t

designed to do so. It has helped keep

local taxing entities in check, but that’s

only a start.

Step 2 of property tax reform should

be initiatives to lower property taxes.

Some of these are in place, such as in-

centives to bring new business to the

state’s barren wastelands such as

Trenton and Camden.

But that is not enough. We need to

bring more business and more jobs to

this state, more ratables for our towns

and school districts to offset the taxes

these entities need to operate. Taxes

aren’t going up too much, and that’s

good, but now they need to start going

down.

I met my husband while doinga photo shoot for Cuisine maga-zine in West Hollywood. Tom was

a video editor for MTV. One week-end, I had to go out of town,which allowed Tom to put his“Casablanca” proposal into ac-tion.

He rented an upright piano,then borrowed a camera andlights from his studio. In Los An-geles, they rent out lookalikecelebrities for events, so Tomrented Humphrey Bogart, com-plete with white suit and LuckyStrikes. A makeup woman fromUniversal made Tom to look likeSam the piano player.

One smoggy Sunday afternoon,Tom sat at the piano while Bogieleaned against it. Lights, camera,

action, take one. The fake Bogierecited his famous line, “Play itagain, Sam.” Then Tom lookedsquarely into the camera andsaid, “Jean Marie, will you marryme forever?” He edited his modi-

fied scene into the original movie.The next night he invited me

over for dinner. When I arrived,he poured some champagne, andthen hit the play button on theVCR. “Casablanca” was fast-for-warded to just before the crucialscene. As I sipped my drink, Iwatched the TV in utter disbelief.Seconds after his proposal, I no-ticed a diamond ring in the bot-tom of my champagne glass. Of course I said yes.

The Third Floor Café – Live Music Night, will host someof the most talented new artistsin the area. The Church StreetRecreation Center, Third Floor is

the venue and local musicianscan showcase their talents.The Third Floor Café Live is

“At the same time as it gave usan opportunity for more revenue,it also gave us an opportunity to

serve nonprofits even more,which is our mission. So that is ahuge positive thing,” Kenneysaid.

The ballroom change has in-creased revenue to help create amore balanced budget. However,there is still much to be done. TheCommunity House needs work onits roof, heating and air-condi-tioning, parking lot and renova-tion of the rooms for this genera-

tion, just to name a few.The Restoration Campaign is

asking for $2 million and is al-

ready 33 percent there. It is ask-ing $1 million for the restorations,$675,000 to satisfy the mortgagecreated from the ballroom and$325,000 to add to the existing per-manent maintenance fund, whichwill restore this fund to its origi-nal level with inflation adjusted.

The Moorestown CommunityHouse has just started its out-reach to businesses with the Busi-ness Leader Breakfast/Lunch.Businesses are invited to come tothe lunch to learn more about the

Restoration Campaign as well asthe Community House’s EldridgeJohnson 10-in-5 Challenge. Thischallenge is asking businesses, orindividuals, to pledge $10,000 to bepaid over five years. The cam-paign is looking for 100 pledges,which is only 5 percent of the1,800 businesses in Moorestownalone. The next one is Tuesday,April 28.

However, not just businesses,

anybody can help the CommunityHouse in its Restoration Cam-paign. If they can’t do the 10-in-5

Challenge, they are encouraged tomake a contribution of any sizeas well as something peoplemight not often think about – hosting an event at the Communi-ty House. Hosting an event helpsraise funds for the CommunityHouse as well.

The hope is to finish the lastpush of this campaign by mid-2016, but Kenney said he wouldlove to be done by the end of 2015.

Based on the InternationalChampionship of Collegiate ACappella, all the high school

groups performcontemporary/pop-music a cap-pella in a mixture of fun and en-tertaining compositions and per-formances. The groups competeto win awards in categories aswell as the grand prize of bestoverall performance. Categoriesinclude group size awards, bestchoreography, best soloist andbest vocal percussionist.

“It’s really unique. The groupsare usually really on point. It’s re-ally entertaining, and you can get

a feel for what a cappella is. Ithink that it has been branded asa geeky thing, but ‘Glee’ and‘Pitch Perfect’ showed that it is areally cool thing,” said Maia Mir-chandani, MHS senior and Acap-pella for Autism committee mem-ber.

While the judges tally theirvotes is when Deep Treble will

perform. Also during the compe-tition, there will be a representa-tive from Autism New Jersey to

talk about the organization andautism. Concessions will be forsale during intermission, andthose proceeds will also benefitAutism New Jersey.

“It is for a good cause, and it isreally interesting to see how allthe groups put together theirmusic. It is like an introduction tothe a cappella world and themusic world in general. Most peo-ple are moved by music, and Ihope they feel moved to come.The groups are really good,” Mir-

chandani said.This is one of Interact Club’s

major events for the year. Lastyear, the club was able to donate$5,600, and it hopes to do the sameor better this year. Tickets are $10and can be bought online atwww.showtix4u.com or at thedoor. Tickets sold out last year,and the Acappella for Autism

committee is hopeful to do soagain, so be sure to get tickets inadvance. Ordering early will

allow for good seating as well, astickets are reserved.

“We keep increasing, and wehope to keep cutting down oncosts and getting more donationsfor Autism New Jersey. If we sellout again this year, we might lookfor another, bigger venue nextyear,” Fan said.

Before the performance, Acap-pella for Autism is also holding afundraiser on Friday, April 17 atJersey Mike’s Subs, when 20 per-cent of the proceeds made from 5

p.m. to 8 p.m. on that Friday willgo toward Acappella for Autism.

“We had the fundraiser therelast year. Their subs are reallygood,” Mirchandani said.
