The Moorestown TownshipCouncil on June 8 authorized$80,000 from the MoorestownOpen Space Recreation, Farm-land and Historic PreservationTrust Fund to be used for envi-ronmental improvements atStrawbridge Lake.

“This is in regard to the workthat was recommended by Prince-ton Hydro after their extensive re-view of the condition of the lakethat Chet Dawson filled us in on acouple weeks ago,” TownshipManager Scott Carew said.

Dan Gutman of Haddonfield, though 59 years old, is a child atheart. One would have to be to bethe well-known author of chil-dren’s books such as “The KidWho Ran for President,” “TheGenius Files,” “Baseball CardsAdventures” and the “My WeirdSchool” series.

When Gutman isn’t writing,he gives presentations to schoolsin his free time, which is one of his favorite parts of the job. Gut-man gave one of his entertainingpresentations to Moorestown’sOur Lady of Good CounselSchool on Wednesday, June 3where he talked to childrenabout his books, the process of writing a book and followingtheir dreams.

“It’s kind of fun. You’re treat-ed like a celebrity when comingto schools. When at home, I’m

treated like a regular guy,” Gut-man said with a laugh.

“We’re very excited he is here. The kids love his books. They’vebeen looking forward to it allyear, and they’ve all been readinghis books,” Librarian KristenMcKeaney said.

When Gutman was young, hehated to read because he thoughtit was boring and hard. It wasn’tuntil fourth grade that Gutman,

who loves sports, wanted toknow more about them, and theonly way he knew how to do thatwas to read. It was then Gutman

consumed every sports book hecould get his hands on, and hislove for reading began.

    After college, when he realized

he didn’t want to be a psycholo-gist or a photographer, Gutman

This week has us thinking about

the future of our kids a lot.

    High school seniors, eighth

    graders and kindergarteners will all

    celebrate graduations this week, clos-

ing one door behind them and opening

    another in front of them.

It’s a vast new world that these kidsand young adults are living in, one

that is drastically different from the

one in which their parents lived at

    their age.

    Technology has provided plenty of

good, plenty of opportunities that the

kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didn’t

    have. It’s mind-boggling.

    And it’s also potentially dangerous.

The Internet can give a person a voice

that can reach millions of people with

a few taps on a keyboard. In terms of

civic involvement, in research and in

other areas, this is something plenty of us would have loved to have had when

we were younger. With the opportuni-

ty, though, also comes the potential for

    long-lasting damage.

Kids don’t often listen to their par-

ents and teachers when they try to

teach them lessons. So maybe they can

learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azal-

    ea.

Last week, posts that Azalea made to

Twitter four years ago have resur-

faced, with screen shots of her posts

    showing insensitive sexual and racist

remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled

    a scheduled performance at Pitts-

burgh’s LGBT Pride event last week-

    end.

The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,

    Lesbian & Straight Education Net-

work didn’t march in the Pittsburgh

Pride parade because Azalea wasscheduled to perform.

Azalea, who turned 25 years old this

month, is facing the music for things

    she posted as a 21-year-old.

It’s a lesson we can all learn from –

once you post it, it’s there forever.

    Even though Azalea deleted those

    four-year-old Tweets, they were still

    available for someone to find.

So, kids, be careful what you post.

Be careful what you do online. It may

seem innocent now, but it could come

back to haunt you years down the line.

    in our opinion

The Internet will follow youThe past is not truly the past online

    Your thoughts

Moorestown has produced a lotof talented individuals. Most re-cently is Chris Newcomer, anactor who performed in a TonyAward-nominated Broadwayshow.

The Moorestown High Schoolalumnus and son of CouncilmanGreg Newcomer, Chris recentlyperformed in “The Visit,” a musi-cal featuring Chita Rivera, which

was nominated for five TonyAwards. Although the show didnot win awards and the show hasclosed, this seems like just the

    start of Newcomer’s opera and

musical theater career.Newcomer grew up loving mu-

He got involved intheater when he was a child at hischurch in Cherry Hill and contin-ued throughout high school per-forming with MHS andMoorArts, which gave him ascholarship to pursue his dream.

One of Newcomer’s biggest in-fluences was getting to work withJeanne Haynes at MHS. She gavehim opportunities to perform big

roles at a young age and instilledin him the work ethic required toreally make those roles shine.

“She has since come to eachBroadway show I've been in, andthat has been amazing to have hersee me carry her legacy throughto adulthood,” Newcomer said.

At college, Newcomer earned abachelor’s in vocal performancefrom Mason Gross Conservatoryat Rutgers and a master’s in opera

performance from the Opera Stu-dio at the University of Mary-land. He started performing pro-

fessionally as an opera singer outof college, and in the last fouryears started to get back into mu-sical theater as well. His first bigopera role was Xerxes at the Uni-versity of Maryland, and his firstbig theater role was playing MarySunshine in “Chicago” on Broad-way.

For his role in “The Visit,” it al-most didn’t happen as he was onthe road with “Chicago” and hiscontract conflicted with theschedule. Luckily, they found a re-placement and Newcomer wasable to be a part of “The Visit.”

“The Visit” is a musical basedon Friedrich Durrenmatt's satiri-cal Swiss play of the same name.It is the story of the richestwoman in the world who returnsto her destitute hometown offer-ing financial assistance at whatturns out to be a terrible price. Itstarred Rivera and was the last

collaboration between John Kan-der and the late Fred Ebb, whowrote “Chicago,” “Cabaret,”“Kiss of the Spiderwoman” andmore. Newcomer played Jacob

    Chicken, a 70-year-old blind eu-nuch.

“The whole cast is amazing, but the best part for me has beenworking with Chita Rivera. She isa legend and is also one of themost genuine and giving artists Ihave ever known. She also lovesto laugh, just like me, so we havea blast backstage,” Newcomersaid.

“The Visit” was nominated forTony Awards in the categoriesBest Musical, Best Performanceby an Actress in a Leading Role ina Musical, Best Book of a Musi-cal, Best Original Score (Musicand/or Lyrics) Written for The-atre and Best Lighting Design of a Musical. When Newcomerheard about “The Visit” beingnominated for these awards, hewas thrilled. He even got to per-form at the Tony Awards.

“To be recognized by our the-

ater community in that way is avery special thing. When I got toperform on the Tonys, that wasone of the greatest highs of mylife. Performing alongside Chita

on one of the most visible plat-forms our art form has to offerwas mind blowing,” Newcomersaid.

Unfortunately, “The Visit” did-n’t win any Tony Awards. Tolearn that they didn’t win washeart-breaking for Newcomer.Another sad event was after theTony Awards it was announcedthat “The Visit” closed on Sunday,June 14.

“Sadly that is the rollercoasterthat is show business,” Newcom-er said.

However, Newcomer is notcompletely downtrodden. He ishopeful people enjoyed the showwhile it lasted. Also, he is lookingforward to continuing to do“beautiful thoughtful produc-tions like this one.”

The Environmental AdvisoryCommittee would like to take outthe spatterdocks, start educatingthe public, remove the algae, do afish study and study what is en-croaching on the lake. It alsowould like to take a look at thethree sediment tanks and fourrain guards to see what conditionthey are in. And finally, the Envi-ronmental Advisory Committeewould like to do chemical andphysical testing on the lake.

    Council unanimously ap-proved the resolution.

traumatic, but he didn’t realize itright away.

He moved to Baltimore afterleaving the Marines and foundhimself stuck between the gap of his military life and civilian life. Not knowing how to cope, hewent to the gym and drank, and itended up being counter-produc-tive.

When a friend and former vet-eran who lost his leg and half of his arm suggested and showedhim yoga, he found he was blownaway by the experience. Helearned the positions and breath-ing that was used in yoga could beused in everyday life to help

power through discomforts andstress in a more organic and posi-tive way.

Over the course of a coupleyears, it took him from a “frag-mented alcohol abuser with anxi-ety and depression” to a connect-ed and put together personagain.

In 2011, Keller decided hecouldn’t keep his experience tohimself and decided to train tobecome a teacher. That summer,he started teaching Yoga for Vets.He spent four years building acommunity there and created anew sense of purpose and con-nection to veterans, others andhimself.

“It saved my life. I was spiral-ing down an emotional roller-coaster, and then I learned I couldactually take charge of my ownhealing organically without med-ication or alcohol. I could savemyself and empower others to do

the same thing. My life had takenon purpose,” Keller said.

Keller moved to Moorestownlast month after he graduatedfrom Towson University with hismaster’s degree in occupationaltherapy and accepted a job in thelocal area. He decided to start theYoga for Vets classes in South Jer-sey as he feels all veterans canand should benefit from yoga.

Yoga for Vet classes have grownand are becoming a nationwidemovement, according to Keller.

“Since I’ve been doing it, it hasabsolutely grown. It’s more ac-ceptable and accessible now forveterans to do yoga. I’m trying toget the word out and make op-tions available, showing vets thatit is OK to do yoga. It’s the wayyou deliver it. I was ready to moveon from Baltimore. I’m here andI’m happy,” Keller said.

The classes are held weekly, with no current end date, asKeller is planning to teach theyoga classes for as long as he is inthe area. Anyone can join at anytime as long as they can verifyservice, which Keller can identifywith some questions. There is noneed to sign up online or have amat. Drop-ins are allowed andmats can be provided. All vetsneed to do is come and wear com-fortable clothing for yoga.

Shine Power Yoga is located at112 E. Main St. in Maple Shadeand classes began on June 6.Moonshine Power Yoga is locatedat 484 E. Evesham Road in CherryHill and classes began June 10.

For more information, visit thePhilly Yoga for Vets Facebookpage or email Keller at [email protected] [email protected].
