The event submission deadline for Glasgow's 4th Southside Fringe Festival in Glasgow is 29 February. This year there's a choice of over 50 registered venues to work with, including a range of Southside clubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, shopping centres and outdoor spaces. A sought-after stage slot at one of this summer’s most prestigious music festivals is being prepared for the winners of a national competition.
The CalMac Culture Music 2016 has now opened for entries from amateur singer-songwriters and bands across the country.
Finalists will perform at the iconic King Tut’s in Glasgow on 31 March, with acts selected to play at one of nine leading music events, including the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival.
The 21st HebCelt, which runs from 13-16 July in Stornoway in the island of Lewis, will be headlined by Runrig, Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Hayseed Dixie. Other acts already confirmed include Julie Fowlis, Astrid, King Creosote, John McCusker, Hunter & the Bear and RURA.
This year’s main arena line-up also includes Bella and the Bear, 12 months after securing a slot on the Islands Stage as finalists in CalMac Culture Music 2015.
Caroline Maclennan, HebCelt’s director and a judge at the contest, said: “I am very much looking forward to seeing the entries this year. The standard has been extremely high in the past and it is exciting to see so many talented singers and bands from all over Scotland.
“Bella and the Bear’s distinctive sound appealed to us immediately and they were such a great addition to our line-up last year we’ve invited them back for our 21st party.”
The CalMac Culture Music competition, run by CalMac Ferries Ltd, was introduced two years ago. Using the link - www.calmac.co.uk/music entrants can submit a video of a performance of
an original piece of music to YouTube and then encourage fans to view and like the video. The closing date for entries this year is 17 March and winners will be announced on 23 March.
Last year eight finalists each performed two live acoustic tracks to judges and a 200-strong audience at King Tut’s.
HebCelt’s 2016 line-up also includes Blue Rose Code, Hazey Janes, Rusty Shackle, Sink Ships, Urban Teuchtars, Whisky Kiss, Woodenbox, Something Someone, Talisk and Fara.
HebCelt has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international
showpiece for roots, Celtic and traditional music, generating more than £20 million for the local economy over two decades.
Last year, it marked its 20th anniversary by hosting its biggest number of live performances ever with more than 50 hours of music and arts events staged in the main arena in the grounds of Lews Castle, as well as an Lanntair arts centre in the town centre and other venues in rural areas.

The Edinburgh International Harp Festival announces a glittering array of harping talent. From Friday the 1st to Wednesday 6th April, harpists from throughout the world will gather to celebrate all aspects of the harp with a host of concerts, courses and workshops in a welcoming and inclusive environment at what is regarded the friendliest harp festival in the world. A DOUBLE CELEBRATION 2016 sees the significant milestone of the 35th Edinburgh International Harp Festival and the 85th Anniversary of its organisers, The Clarsach Society. Harps at 85, devised and presented by Isobel Mieras and Gillean McDougall, will trace the Society’s story from small beginnings to to-day’s powerful influence in the international harping world. Featuring a kaleidoscope of performances from well kent faces including Wendy Stewart, Alison Kinnaird, Sileas, Corrina Hewat, Catriona McKay and the harp ensemble Na Clarsairean, alongside the new voices of the next generation.
CELTIC COUSINS Continuing the annual focus on the music of a Celtic nation, the EIHF is turning the spotlight on Wales. Leading Welsh triple harpist Robin Huw Bowen will present Extrava-Cambria, featuring harpists Gwenan Gibbard, Elinor Bennett, Meinir Heulyn and Bill Taylor. Combined with harpists from Rhes Ganol (Wales’ Triple Harp Ensemble), The Clarsach Society Wales Branch, and
Clerorfa (The Welsh Folk Orchestra) an exciting programme reflecting harping in Wales through the ages will be performed on Bray, Celtic, Pedal, and Triple Harps. Elinor Bennett, acclaimed international concert harpist, is the 2016 Festival Distinguished Guest. Rooted in the traditional music, language and culture of Wales she will perform a concert programme of music by Welsh composers stretching over 3 centuries.
DELIGHTFUL DUOS Internationally renowned jazz pedal harpist Park Stickney teams up with flautist Violaine Contreras to perform a programme that will include jazz, tangos and even the odd sonata, effortlessly improvised beyond recognition with much humour. Harmonica player Brendan Power joins Irish harpist Anne-Marie O’Farrell in a stunning exploration of Irish music for harp and ‘mouth harp’ creating a new, exciting and improvisatory context for old tunes. Using the recently revived traditional Turkish harp, the ceng, as well as lever Şirin Pancaroğlu and singer/composer Bora Uymaz, will introduce a unique flavour of Turkish music from early Ottoman to new music rooted in their tradition. Scotland’s own Catriona McKay returns with her duo partner, fiddler Chris Stout, in a creative collaboration with West-African musicians, guitarist Samba Diabaté and kora player Vincent Zanetti of duo Kala Jula. This festival highlight will capture the spirit of adventure and glowing warmth of two delightful duos combining to perform as one.
CLÀRSACH, CLÒ IS CÀNAN Clàrsach, Clò is Cànan - Harp, Cloth, Language and Song: A musical Journey, will celebrate the connection between music, song and the weaving of the tweed on the Gaelic speaking islands of Lewis
Harris, marking the 125th anniversary of An Comunn Gaidhealach. With performances from the group Shine - Corrina Hewat, Mary Macmaster and Alyth McCormack - alongside harper/singer Mairi Macleod and composer Fraya Thomsen, the evening will culminate in a live demonstration of the waulking of the tweed.
SUPER SOLOISTS Spain’s Vicente La Camera Mariño, one of the finest exponents of the wire harp presents pieces by the legendary blind harpist of Ireland, Turlough O’Carolan. Appearing for the first time at the EIHF, Italian lever harpist Adriano Sangineto will perform a dynamic programme of his own original compositions, influenced by his native folk music.
WORKSHOPS AND COURSES A core element of EIHF is the chance to learn and share skills and knowledge in a wide range of
workshops and courses. Workshops, 20 in total, will explore a variety of topics including how to manage stress as a harper, Welsh gypsy harping, French dance tunes, waulking of the tweed, jazz harp, and even a guide to the other harp… the moothie! Courses, 37 in total, at every possible level, include Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Turkish and Italian harp music, how to compose and arrange on the harp, pop and film harp music, jazz, sessions with the harp, technique, wire harp, Gaelic through song and the chance to play in a harp ensemble. Taught over 30 world-class, experienced tutors, there are also harp classes for adult and child beginners with harps and the opportunity to both take part and spectate in a masterclass with the 2016 Festival Distinguished Guest, Elinor Bennett

Glasgow Short Film Festival is delighted to announce the World Premiere of Lost Treasure, which will open the 9th edition of the Festival on Wednesday 16 March before touring to other venues in Scotland. Inspired by the work of the Dawn Cine Group, a 1950s Glasgow-based socialist filmmaking collective, Glasgow Short Film Festival commissioned musicians Drew Wright (Wounded Knee) and Hamish Brown (Swimmer One) to compose and perform a new piece of music on overlapping themes of abandoned projects and rural depopulation. In 1956 the Dawn Cine Group embarked on their most ambitious project, Lost Treasure, which was intended to tell the story of the Scottish Highlands and its people, drawing on folk song and personal testimony. Although 40 minutes of footage were shot in July 1956, the film was never finished. Drew and Hamish worked with filmmaker Minttu Mäntynen to devise a live audio-visual performance that responds to the unfinished film and goes some way towards completing the story it tells. With its unintentionally apt title, the abandoned film is in itself a reflection of the Scottish Highlands, much of it either neglected or exploited by absentee landlords, and its people, so many of whom have been forced off the land in one way or another.
With land reform in Scotland as hotly topical now as it was in the 1950s, Lost Treasure has enduring relevance. The piece will have its World Premiere shortly before the Scottish parliamentary elections, where land reform is expected to be a highly charged issue. Musician Drew Wright adds “I’m delighted to be working on this reimagining of Lost Treasure. A key strand of my work is the presentation of traditional material in new contexts, and this project gives me the opportunity to delve into sound and moving image archives in order to create a new work weaving together traditional songs, field recordings and archival recordings of oral history.” GSFF Director Matt Lloyd says “After last year’s hugely successfully 30th anniversary screening of Clyde Film at GSFF, we wanted to look back even further, to the group who inspired the makers of Clyde Film. The Dawn Cine Group were way ahead of their time, socially committed and ambitious filmmakers. Galloway’s own international roots music festival 'Knockengorroch' has made the first announcement for the events line-up in 2016, featuring live and dance music from across the world.
Organiser Liz Holmes said ‘We feel it’s a really special experience to listen to live bands, often who have travelled from quite far flung parts of the world, in the surroundings of the beautiful mountains of the Southern Uplands. We’re really excited by our line-up this year which features live and DJ artists from all corners of the globe playing some of the best music around!’

Black Uhuru: All the way from Jamaica on a rare visit to the UK, Black Uhuru, whose name comes from the Swahili word meaning “freedom,” were the first reggae band to win a Grammy award. Their track “I love Selassie” and many others have become reggae classics.
Family Atlantica: Fronted by the charismatic Venezuelan vocalist Luzmira this band move between the African and American continents with strong percussion and brilliant performers
Skerryvore: Full on hi energy trad-folk-rock from the West coast from this young, award winning band.
Niteworks: Formed on the Isle of Skye, they fuse Gaelic language and traditional music with electronic influences to create a unique and exhilarating sound.
Freestylers: After a 15 year career they have covered a full 360 degrees in the Bass music genre. Their ever-eclectic style and renegade approach to production knows no bounds.
Krafty Kuts: A DJ who has never lost his passion for music and his love to create Krafty Kuts has dedicated a lifetime to his breaks and beats.

For the first time in the Festival’s history the Glasgow Jazz Festival has been shortlisted for a Jazz FM Award! The festival has been nominated in the Live Experience of the Year category at the 2016 Jazz FM awards.
Taylor McFerrin’s performance at The Rio Club on the final night of last year’s Festival has been nominated for the prestigious award. The public will vote for the winner via the Awards website http://www.jazzfmawards.com/poll/vote-2016/. Voting opened on 24 February, and closes on 31st March. Taylor McFerrin (eldest son of vocal legend Bobby McFerrin) performed alongside drummer Marcus Gilmore to bring the final night to a close in style at 2015’s Glasgow Jazz Festival.
Jill Rodger, Director of Glasgow Jazz Festival, said: “We knew Taylor’s performance at The Rio Club on the final night of last year’s festival was outstanding, one of those unforgettable nights of entertainment that takes your breath away, but it is absolutely brilliant to know that the festival’s audiences thought the same. Comprised of Ty Taylor (vocals), Nalle Colt (guitar), Richard Danielson (drums) and Rick Barrio Dill (bass), the star-studded band released their first album in August last year, 1 Hopeful Road , to widespread critical acclaim.
During 2015 Vintage Trouble took to the road supporting AC/DC across Australia, Europe and the USA, in amongst a host of sold out headline shows (including London’s Koko), festival appearances (including British Summer Time at Hyde Park) and opening for Paloma Faith at London’s O2 Arena.
Described as the band who plays music that has
a little bit of everything and being like ‘James Brown singing lead for Lez Zeppelin’, Vintage Trouble are a very exciting early announcement for the festival’s 30th Year Line-Up.
Follow the release of their debut album, The Bomb Shelter Sessions in 2011, Vintage Trouble were soon selling out headline shows worldwide, opening for The Rolling Stones and touring with The Who, and performing on shows like “Later…with Jools Holland,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Conan” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live”– all before they had even signed to a major label.

The UK’s biggest festival volunteer company, Festaff, have opened applications for this year’s best summer events - and announced they will be accepting a record 3,700 volunteers to cope with demand. Volunteers can sign up for positions at the UK’s biggest festivals now via www.festaff.co.uk
Since 2008, the company have welcomed over 12,300 people into their team, with students looking for festival placements making up 60% of that total. With facilities including meal vouchers and a flexible shift/free time balance, Festaff provide an ideal platform to gain invaluable work experience while also having some fun.
Three extra festivals have been added to their roster for 2016, meaning for just a £15 sign-up fee, you can now volunteer and experience the behind the scenes at 32 of the UK’s favourite music events, including Download Festival, Creamfields and T in the Park. Roles include wristband issuers, stewards and bar staff.
As well as the chance to see the world’s biggest music acts, Festaff also offer the chance to move up through the ranks to become paid members of staff, with 60% of their current employees starting out as volunteers. As a result, they have seen a spike in graduate and young professional volunteers looking to forge a career in the festival and music industry.
Festaff founder, Sandy Reid, said: “We’ve seen our number of volunteers grow hugely in the last few years and 2016 is set to be our biggest and busiest year yet. We’ll spend an incredible 135 days on site at festivals this summer and need the right crew to make those days amazing, so we can’t wait to see the passionate people who apply to be part of the Festaff family this year. Wale's annual Cwlwm Celtaidd's Young Musician of the Festival competition for under 18 year-olds returns.
As part of the festival weekend on March 4-6 Cwlwm Celtaidd will welcome talented young musicians to the Porthcawl Grand Pavilion stage where the winner will receive a financial prize of £50 and a chance to play as part of the main concert on Sunday, March 6.
The festival will also welcome artists form four corners of the Celtic world with RURA from Scotland, Jamie Smith Mabon, Linda Griffiths and Sorela from Wales and dancers Perree Bane from the Isle of Man among them.
To have the chance of winning the ‘Young Musician of the Festival’ title the applicant will need to present between 3 and 5 minutes of
traditional Celtic tunes on an instrument of their choice with a short explanation.
Jamie Smith is the band leader of one of this year’s headliners, Mabon. He says: “It’s a pleasure to be one of the judges again this year for the Young Musician of the Festival competition. We had a highly encouraging turn out for the first one last year and after some tough decision-making the prize went to Welsh fiddler Dylan Cairns-Howarth, beating off some stiff competition from Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man!”
Judge Jaime Smith says: “As Dylan has his own concert spot this year at the festival, it shows what a great launchpad it is for young musicians who are interested in performing opportunities. It would be fantastic to have even more entries this year, especially from young Welsh musicians."
Jaime continued: "Although we take the judging seriously the event is warm and friendly, just like the whole festival, so it’s not too scary! The main aim is to get young musicians together to listen to each
other play and inspire each other.”
A family friendly festival, Cwlwm Celtaidd has a packed programme of concerts, dances, workshops, free street dance displays in the Town Centre and on the Esplanade as well as legendary music sessions at the bar.
The competition will be held at Porthcawl Grand Pavilion at 10am on Sunday, March 6. Those

Niel Gow Scottish Fiddle Festival Dunkeld & Birnam 18-20 March The 2016 Niel Gow Festival will be held in the beautiful Perthshire village of Dunkeld & Birnam, home of Niel Gow. The annual festival was established in 2004 to celebrate the life and music of Perthshire's fiddle legend. It is envisaged that through time the festival and other activities will gather enough funds to erect a fitting memorial to Niel Gow in Dunkeld & Birnam.
