The annual Glasgow extravaganza of all things americana has announced it's first act and the availability of their much sought after festival passes. Louisiana's Mary Gauthier will appear at this year’s Glasgow Americana Festival at St Andrew's In The Square on Friday 3 October. The hugely popular and gloriously talented singer/songwriter headlined the first ever Festival back in 2007.

Mary's new album, “Trouble and Love,” due for release shortly, features songs of transformation, moving from being one way to another way, internally. She’s been a welcome visitor to Scotland with her challenging and critically-acclaimed catalogue of music from six studio albums since composing her first song at the age of 35. For this show, she will supported by Ben Glover who won many admirers during his performance at Glasgow Americana last year at the Gram Parsons’ tribute night.

A Glasgow Americana 2014 Festival Pass, costing £78, entitles the holder entry to all Glasgow Americana 2014 performances during the valid period of the ticket, the laminated festival pass will be issued by post, and must be presented at the box office to gain entry to the shows. Tickets for collection can be made from the box office on event days only. The festival pass is only available for purchase until Friday 26 September at 6pm.

Paisley has been paying tribute to one of the town's favourite sons with the Bring it all Home festival over the last week- inspired by the legacy of the town's own son Gerry Rafferty. The nine-day festival has seen more than twenty different acts take to the stage at 12 shows in five venues around the town. The musical events are taking place alongside a well-attended exhibition on Gerry's life in Paisley Museum, open until May and featuring artwork from his long-time friend John Byrne. Still to come though in Paisley Town Hall is 'A Celebration of Scottish Songwriting' on Saturday 19 April - with a stellar gathering of talent paying tribute to the breadth and depth of Caledonian creativity - from Robert Burns to the present day. The Pictish Trail to headline Big Day In

Edinburgh : 20 April : www.theelectriccircus.biz

In what will be the second year of the 'Big Day In Festival' at Edinburgh's Electric Circus, The Pictish Trail, aka name Johnny Lynch will headline it along with two groups bookending either side of the electro spectrum. Recently returning from SXSW in Texas, Glasgow’s Prides operate with the essence of light pop as their surgical tools, while the disturbed, turbulent beats of Roman Nose will be laid out on the table by the trio and ruthlessly toyed with. Also set to feature are the wonderfully fatalistic, genre-dipping ditties of Miracle Strip, hypnotic hybrid duo Birdhead, Man of Moon, brothers from other mothers Carbs, northerners Indian Red Lopez, and Gymnast, who are akin to London’ group Daughter post-synthesizer booster. Glasgow PodcART and female-led collective TYCI will be spinning after-hours DJ sets alongside the beats of Kitchen Disco. www.theelectriccircus.biz www.facebook.com/electriccircusedinburgh

TradFest set to celebrate the revival of cultural traditions

Edinburgh : 29 April-11 May : www.tracscotland.org/festivals/tradfest

GET TICKETS! Box Office & listings: www.tracscotland.org/festivals/tradfest/events

In its second edition after a triumphant debut in 2013, TradFest returns as Edinburgh’s only multi-arts festival dedicated to Scottish traditional, Gaelic and folk arts. Scotland will welcome the world in the Year of Homecoming 2014 providing a year-long programme of events alongside the Ryder Cup and Commonwealth Games and TradFest is delighted to be part of the celebrations showcasing traditional Scottish culture, live. Rooted in the past yet intrinsically connected to the present TradFest takes place in Edinburgh between April 29 and May 11 and boasts over eighty events and shows spread across twenty six venues. The festival features Scottish and international music concerts, talks and debates spanning Scottish cuisine to political self determination, storytelling sessions revelling in mystical folklore, Fringe theatre, puppet shows, walking tours, visual arts, film screenings, conferences and craft fairs. TradFest also falls on the May Day Parade and will feature an address by journalist and writer Owen Jones. Music: A mainstay of the festival and with a Scottish and Gaelic talent pool in abundance we’re delighted to have music acts like Kathleen MacInnes, Fiona Hunter, Alastair Savage Trio, Simon Kempston, Breabach, Adam Holmes, Nuala Kennedy, Rachel Newton, Skerryvore, Euan Drysdale and the brilliantly named Horndog Brassband plus many more performing. Equally with the international resurgence in folk arts, specifically music, we’re excited to welcome Canadians The Dardanelles and Eileen McGann, Welsh and Sengalese acts Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, European fusion collectives Mediterraneo and Nether Mind the Balkans, plus The Old Dance School from England.

An ‘Aye’ on Scotland: As the world’s eyes and ears hone in on Scotland for what will be the nation’s most memorable year in modern times with the Scottish Independence Referendum taking centre stage, TradFest celebrates the wealth of diversity in folk arts and asks why during big moments in Scotland’s history, people have dug into folk traditions as a source of inspiration and orientation? Thus, the theme of this year’s festival is ‘Revival and Renaissance’. Events such as the piping day seminar/concert featuring Roddie Macleod, Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson and the conferences on Celtic Revival at the National Galleries and the National Library of Scotland will offer some clue as to how to unravel our adapting cultural landscape. Blackwell’s Bookshop hosts some very auspicious authors, thinkers and academics who will be talking about and debating issues concerning the revival of national identity and culture and the role of arts in fuelling Scotland’s outward cultural appeal. Guests from both sides of the independence debate include David Torrance (Scotland in a federal UK?), Gerry Hassan (Caledonian Dreaming) and Alexander Moffat (Arts of Independence). TradFest offers many contemporary performances and shows including National Collective’s ‘Project Wish Tree’ and The Nation/Live Roots featuring Wounded Knee who present a political yet distinctive sound, a hybrid representation of Scotland. There is a film screening of ‘Dolina Mclennan: A Continuing Renaissance’ a picture about Gaelic activist and actress Dolina Mclennan featuring singer Kathleen MacInnes. Transgressive North present Folk Cinema combining music and film inspired by Scottish folk music traditions. TradFest also incorporates theatre such as Crows in the Capital, an outdoor performance based around the milestones of the history of Argyll in Scotland. Literature & Storytelling TradFest caters for Gaelic and English speakers providing an

integrated cultural experience for all tastes and ages. John Francis Campbell and Alexander Carmichael preside over Storytellers of Gaelic Scotland, an event for speakers of both languages, while there’s a muckle fest of Scots language in A Braw Nicht Oot. The Young Storytellers Competition offers an opportunity for raconteurs under sixteen years old to tell their tales, showcasing the next generation and Taffy Thomas leads an inspired tribute to storytelling voices from Britain and Ireland accompanied by music and the sword wielding Newcastle Kingsmen. The Scottish Storytelling Centre offers an amazing array of shows from the mystical to the political, with stories of Scottish coalmines and their communities in Bonnie Collier Lads and Lassies just one example. Family Fun: This year’s celebrations have not been rehearsed without consideration of the bairns so we’ve organised a feast of fun, games and frolicking for toddlers and young children. The Secret Life of Suitcases (**** The Herald) is a family oriented puppetry production geared around the mysterious arrival of a magical suitcase, Tiny TradFest Tales is a mixture of stories, song and dance aimed at 1 to 3 year olds and Mrs Mash, Kail Yard Tales is back with

some amazing stories and songs about Scotland’s food. What’s more… Another addition to this year’s festival is the inclusion of a visual arts strand with exhibitions at the Talbot Rice Gallery, the Museum of Edinburgh and the Scottish Storytelling Centre. TradFest’s partnership with the National Galleries of Scotland offers an insight into the Scottish colourist J.D. Fergusson’s work. After Hours: After the success of the evening soiree that is the Festival Club, we’re this year offering music, an open mic and a convivial atmosphere every evening from Friday 2 May at Teviot Row’s Lounge Bar. TradFest raises the curtain on a summer of Festivals across Scotland bringing the Old Town of Edinburgh to life, showcasing how it was made for conviviality. Box Office: The majority of tickets are available at the Scottish Storytelling Centre Box Office. Some events are only available to purchase at other venues, all info in below link. You can buy and collect tickets in person at TradFest Box Office: Scottish Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1SRT or by telephone 0131 556 9579.

Buffy Sainte-Marie, Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash to headline Southern Fried Festival

Perth : 25-27 July : www.southernfriedfestival.co.uk

Buffy Sainte-Marie, Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash have been announced as headliners for this year’s Southern Fried Festival. Other acts confirmed for Scotland’s seventh annual festival of American Roots music in Perth Concert Hall and other city centre venues from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 July include John Fullbright, Marc Ford and Cedric Watson with more to be announced.

With Perth Theatre currently closed for restoration and redevelopment, The Salutation Hotel, a favourite after show haunt with Southern Fried acts, has stepped in to host Saturday and Sunday afternoon gigs as well as the iconic Late and Southern Fried gigs. Taking place on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July after the main stage gigs in Perth Concert Hall, former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford (last seen at Southern Fried playing in Booker T's band) and Louisiana fiddler Cedric Watson are already on the bill with further Late and Southern Fried acts to be announced.

As always, there will be the usual smattering of smaller gigs in city centre venues, a Sunday Brunch, support gigs and open mics all fuelled by the famous Southern Fried soul food and served up with a warm slice of Scottish hospitality.

Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender announces first headline acts

Kilmarnock : 23-25 May : www.killieweekender.com

Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender has announce that Fatherson, Vigo Thieves, and The Ok Social Club will be headlining the Emu Bands stage at town's Liquor Lounge from the 23-25 May. Fatherson formed in Kilmarnock, and rose to prominence through supporting Frightened Rabbit, Twin Atlantic and Idlewild, amongst many others. The band received early support from BBC Radio 1, along with TV coverage of their T In The Park performance on BBC2, and this week they released their debut album, ‘I Am An Island’. In 2013 Vigo Thieves made history by becoming the first unsigned act to sell out two consecutive nights at Glasgow’s legendary King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, and were described by Geoff Ellis, CEO of DF Concerts, as “Scotland’s hottest unsigned act.” Another appearance at T In The Park followed in the summer of 2013, and momentum continued to build for the Glasgow five-piece. March 2014 saw the release of the EmuBands-distributed single,’ This Love’, which was closely followed by their biggest headline show to date – at the O2 ABC in Glasgow. The Ok Social Club released their first three singles in 2012 and quickly gained support through plays on various TV and radio shows, like MTV Rocks, Hollyoaks, Soccer AM and BBC Introducing on Radio 1. They rounded off the year in style, playing Edinburgh’s Hogmanay street party alongside The View, The Maccabees, Reverend & The Maker and headliners Simple Minds, and their debut album, Nothing In Common, followed in 2013. It was another successful year for the band, with a headline show at Glasgow’s King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, and festival appearances at Wickerman and goNorth. Festival organiser, David Hanvey says “To have these three acts come along to perform at our event is wonderful as they have each had such successful years. Especially Fatherson who in my opinion are the most successful act to have come out of Kilmarnock since Biffy Cylro. We have always done our best to give local acts a platform to perform with more established acts but for one of the established acts to actually come from the town is great for other acts from the area, I hope it gives them something to aim for.” Other acts performing include The Sunshine Underground, Alabama 3, The Complete Stone Roses Brown Bear and The Bandits and hotly tipped Holy Pistol Club. The Birthday Suit (Rod Jones of Idlewilds new project), Kilmarnocks Losing Ground, Rose Parade, The Stumblers, One Last Secret, Brave Young Red, Closer, The Mavis Project, Huxtable, Outstandifold and The Wettygrippers, All But Gentlemen, Nemecyst and there's many more still to be announced. http://facebook.com/KillieWeekender http://twitter.com/Killieweekender www.killieweekender.com
