A new search has started for future stars who will win a sought-after stage slot at one of Scotland’s major music festivals. The One Step Further contest for young artists is now an annual feature of the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival which attracts an international audience of more than 16,000 to Stornoway in the island of Lewis. The winners will join headliners Levellers, Big Country and Donnie Munro, as well as renowned acts including Duncan Chisholm and Cara Dillon, in playing on the main festival stage. Glasgow-based trio Muran won the 2012 competition just six months after forming, while female quartet Gria took the prize last year, three months after playing their first gig. Duncan Chisholm, who appeared at the first HebCelt in 1996 and has played at the festival six times since, said the contest is a wonderful opportunity for young artists - “Giving a platform to young performers is vitally important to our artistic community. Having the aspiration and opportunity to perform on a big stage will always drive musicians to practise and become better. The HebCelt One Step Further contest not only creates a huge opportunity for emerging talent but also gives the HebCelt

audience the chance to hear fresh and exciting sounds." The 19th HebCelt will be held from 16-19 July. The festival attracts interest from across the world and last year was selected as one of the Top 10 UK summer festivals by influential music publication Songlines for the third successive year. Festival Director Caroline Maclennan, said: “The One Step Further competition is now well established and generates a lot of interest among young artists who see the opportunity it presents to showcase their music to a large audience. “There is a wealth of talented artists out there and it is part of HebCelt’s mission to help develop such talent. We have been very impressed with the quality of entries over the last two years and expect to have to make another difficult choice this year.”

Search begins for Young Talent to play at HebCelt 2014

Submissions Deadline: 12 April - www.hebceltfest.com

2013 winners Gria on the HebCelt stage last year : www.facebook.com/GriaBand

The One Step Further competition is open to any young band or performer, aged between 18 and 25 at the time of the festival, playing a genre of music that reflects the general programming of the event.

To enter, artists need to prepare a promotional pack in electronic format that includes links to three good quality recordings of their music, at least one high resolution photograph and a biography. They can also include links to a live performance.

Submissions should be sent by email by 5pm on 12 April to [email protected] and marked 'HebCelt New Talent Submissions'. The winners will be announced on 3 May and will be able to perform live on either Friday, 19th or Saturday, 20th July within the main arena. They will also receive £300 towards expenses.

Wickerman, one of Scotland’s best-loved independent music festivals, has revealed that the Saturday night headliner for this summer’s event will be seminal Scottish pop-rock band Del Amitri. Also joining the eclectic bill will be Alabama 3, with other main stage acts still to be announced. On Saturday 26 July Del Amitri are set to storm the stage in what will be their first festival appearance in 12 years. The chart topping band, who have sold six million albums, will rock the crowds with their signature mix of indie art pop, folk infused ballads and Brit rock, performing hits such as ‘Nothing Ever Happens’, ‘Always the Last to Know’, ‘Roll to Me’ and ‘Kiss This Thing Goodbye’. Guitarist Iain Harvie commented: “It's been a long time, but what a prospect it is to play to a Scottish festival crowd again; we’re really looking forward to joining all the Wicker fans this Summer." Joining the line-up on the Friday will be English, alternative rock act Alabama 3. The band are famed for their fusion of styles, mixing rock, dance, blues, country, gospel, and spoken word, as well as their electric presence on stage. The group will return to the Summerisle Stage to once again wow the Wickerman crowds with hits both old and new, including ‘Woke Up This Morning’ the theme tune to hit American TV series, ‘The Sopranos’ which the band are renowned for the world over. Wickerman Festival Coordinator Helen Chalmers is delighted to reveal yet more acts for the 2014 festival. She commented: “We are over the moon that Del Amitri have chosen Wickerman to make their Scottish festival comeback, after such a distinguished and memorable career it’ll be amazing to see the original members performing live again. It will be great to see Alabama 3 return to the festival this year, they have always had such an affinity with the Wickerman crowd. The atmosphere is sure to be electric”

Edinburgh's Northern Streams Festival prepares to sail the seas

Edinburgh : 25-26 April : www.northernstreams.org

This April celebrates the eleventh year of Edinburgh's Northern Streams Festival with a feast of music, dance and song from Norway, Sweden, Shetland and the North of England. Guests include Norway’s dynamic ‘rock and roll’ Storm Weather Shanty Choir, award-winning Kevin Lees, Dave Wood & Noa Shamir (Denmark/Britain); Shetland’s premier duo Maggie Adamson & Brian Nicholson and innovative Swedish musicians Kristin Borgehed & Nathan Bissette. Fiona Campbell, Festival Co-organiser said “I’m especially delighted this year to be able to bring Storm Weather Shanty Choir over. I first saw

them in Oslo in 2008 and have wanted to bring them to Scotland ever since. They’re just one example of the great performers and tutors that will be in Edinburgh for a packed 2 days!” The Northern Streams programme includes workshops on sea shanties, Shetland music, Swedish songs and Scandinavian folk dancing; a sharing session and 2 evening concerts - all at its new festival venue, the Grassmarket Centre, a community social enterprise which helps build skills and confidence in people. Much of the festival is suitable for both adults

and children, including a children’s workshop on Scandinavian dance. Northern Streams is organised by the Traditional Music and Song Association (TMSA) Edinburgh & Lothians Branch and supported by bodies including the Enterprise Music Scotland Traditional Arts Small Grants Programme (distributing funds from Creative Scotland) and the Nancie Massey Charitable Trust. Finn's Crowd Funding challenge to put Scottish musical 'Alba' on at the Edinburgh Fringe festival

Edinburgh : 11-23 August : www.facebook.com/albathemusical

21 year old Finn Anderson has spent the last 18 months making his mark on the London Fringe scene but his latest musical, Alba, will premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August.

Alba tells the exhilarating, heartwarming story of a young man whose reluctant return to rural Scotland sparks an emotional rollercoaster of self-discovery, triggering him to rekindle his love for his home country and its people. Infused with traditional Scottish influences, the original score will be performed live by a cast of actor-musicians. Finn said "I want to create something that combines my passion for musical theatre with my deep rooted love for Scottish traditional and folk music. With the independence referendum and commonwealth games looming, 2014 feels like an exciting year to be in Scotland" Although still only 21 Finn's 'Streets' has been nominated for two Off West End Awards including ‘Best New Musical’ and a Broadway World Award for 'Best New Musical in Fringe or Regional Theatres'. It has been described as “Breathtaking” by The Stage, “groundbreaking” by West End Frame and has been seen and supported by the likes of Idris Elba and Ed Sheeran. Finn grew up in the East Neuk of Fife and produced his first full length musical aged 14 at The Byre Theatre. Finn said that working on Alba is making him feel closer to home: “London is a brilliant place for musical theatre but there isn’t the same folk tradition there. The way the Scottish people celebrate and maintain that tradition is something I really miss” In order to get to the Fringe, Finn has to raise £4,000 and has launched a crowd funding campaign on 'Kickstarter'. "Taking a show to Edinburgh is extremely expensive and so we need all the help we can get! Crowd funding draws support from our audience enabling us to create work without commercial producers or big financial investment.”

By giving anything from £1, supporters will receive unique rewards for their contribution – plus Finn will be writing an original song for anyone who gives £100 or more. Finn answered two commonly asked questions: WHAT IS THE MONEY GOING TOWARDS? "Taking a show to Edinburgh is extremely expensive. The vast majority of productions struggle to break even and profit is extremely rare. However, it is one of the best and most exciting places on the globe to showcase new writing and so we are determined to get there! The money raised on Kickstarter will predominantly go towards the hire of the performance venue for 2 weeks, the hire of rehearsal space and the Edinburgh Fringe registration. £4,000 is the absolute minimum we need to cover those costs. We're lucky to have one of the most attractive, unique venues in Edinburgh, Surgeons' Hall - but no big financial investor or production company backing us." WHAT DO YOU GET IN RETURN? "We have got some pretty special rewards lined up for you ranging from signed CDs to a private house concert or original song written especially for you. Check it out on our Kickstarter page - http://kck.st/1kqZMLY Also you get to play a part in furthering the creation of innovative new musical theatre in Scotland and the UK. With the West End awash with 'jukebox musicals' based on films or existing songs, it is more important than ever to support new, adventurous writing. Alba runs from 11-23 August at The Grand Theatre at Surgeons Hall, Nicolson Street. To back the project, visit kickstarter.com and search ‘Alba’ (direct link http://kck.st/1kqZMLY) www.facebook.com/albathemusical https://twitter.com/

ADVERTISE IN OUR 3 WEEKLY DIGITAL

PUBLICATIONS

We are delighted to reveal the first round of acts for this year’s Big Beach Ball Festival in Aberdeen. Taking place in and around the city’s iconic Beach Ballroom across 5 stages of music – BBB ’14 sees fantastic live bands and artists from across the country plus some of the world’s biggest DJs line-ups – and with The Beach Ballroom celebrating it’s 85th birthday on the same weekend, BBB '14 is kicking off the UK festival season with a bang. BBB welcomes back MUNGO’S HI-FI alongside CHARLIE P once more to bring a whole heap of reggae fun to the festival. This sound system crew have won fans the world over playing as far afield as Peru, Croatia and Brazil this year, with their forward thinking approach to music and ever popular releases on in-house record label, Scotch Bonnet. It wouldn’t be The Beach Ball Festival without them. Upping the game again, live music fans will be pleased to see big performances on the cards by a variety of bands from around the UK, leading their respective fields with distinction. ADMIRAL FALLOW will supply epic indie pop and swaying anthems on the outdoor stage recalling Elbow, Frightened Rabbit and Animal Collective. The band touted last year as “headed for the top” have certainly lived up to their billing with Q Magazine and Uncut giving their latest album an outstanding 8/10. Distinctly catchy Aberdeen born indie rockers THE LITTLE KICKS will complete their Scottish Tour at The Big Beach Ball Festival, playing one of their only shows in the city this year. Headlining our Peace & Jam Live Lounge at the top of the Ballroom, we have a bit of a coup with former Arab Strap member and beloved post-folk musician MALCOLM MIDDLETON taking to the stage. Elsewhere, making waves in the Scottish music scene following a string of supports for Frightened Rabbit, Panic! at the Disco and Twin Atlantic, Glasgow 4-piece FATHERSON will add The Beach Ball to their festival appearances which include RockNess and Stage & Dagger. Completing the live line-up for BBB's first announcement and having run Fence Records for over 10 years from a sleepy fishing village on the east coast, lo-fi troubadour PICTISH TRAIL and Glasgow pop band TUFF LOVE will perform a mini LOST MAP RECORDS showcase in the Peace & Jam Lounge. Sunny rockers OK SOCIAL CLUB, recently crowned ‘Best Live Act’ at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards kick things off early inside, while expert local support comes from movers and shakers the MARIONETTES, FOREST FIRES and Dundee’s THE MIRROR TRAP. One of house music’s originators - KERRI CHANDLER - an iconic figure in the electronic music world, brings his inspirational and instinctive 4/4 beat to our outdoor stage; a perfect setting for what will be one of the most exciting performances Aberdeen has seen in recent years.

Detroit born techno pioneer GREEN VELVET, another Aberdeen favourite, returns to Scotland under his alter-ego guise of CAJMERE, ready to lay down some trademark hypnotic house and jacking grooves - headlining our special ‘10 Years of Snafu Stage’ inside the Ballroom. Nominated as ‘DJs of the Year’ 2013 by DJ Mag, Glasgow based duo OPTIMO make The Big Beach Ball Festival journey together for the first time. Revered by clubbers and critics in equal measure, no one unites a dance floor like Twitch & Wilkes as they set about seamlessly pulling together every genre under the sun. In addition another Sub Club pair, fountain of youth and long term Subculture residents HARRI & DOMENIC will bring a touch of class to proceedings this year; their DJ skills respected the world over for pushing boundaries in every direction. Indeed, the same can be said for Irish youngster KRYSTAL KLEAR, graduate of the Red Bull Music Academy and RinseFM radio host, who makes his Aberdeen debut at this year’s festival. Effortlessly sliding from boogie to funk to hip-hop, Krystal Klear is one act you HAVE to get down early to catch, not only touted as one of the UK’s most on point selectors, but a producer hyped by everyone from Hudson Mohawke to Brodinksi via the likes of Skream, Jackmaster and Joy Orbison – he certainly has a bright future in this game. BBB are also extremely pleased to deliver heavyweight DJ sets from BIGFOOT’S TEA PARTY, MINIVAL, GREG GIBB, DSR SOUNDSYSTEM and JUNGLE NATION. With all this and more to come, plus BREAKNECK COMEDY, POP UP SHOPS, BEACH BARS and FOOD MARKETS, 2014’s Big Beach Ball Festival is set to be one of the biggest music events in Scotland this year. www.thebigbeachball.co.uk www.facebook.com/thebigbeachball
