Local News Support for Service Children A community organisation that supports children of service personnel and veterans in Buckinghamshire has used a grant from the Libor fund to increase its support capability The Service Children Support Network (SCSN) was awarded pound280000 in June by David Cameron enabling it to employ five new family coordinators to work in local schools Andrea Lovejoy Paula Florey Diane Pringle Karen Thorley and Jane Wright have joined the team to provide support to children affected when their parents are deployed away from home SCSN founder Joy OrsquoNeill said ldquoThe new coordinators are settling in really well Being a service wife and parent like myself they have developed the skills to help the children cope with upheaval and parental detachment We have trained them so they can now work with early years primary and secondary school children Their work will create a lasting legacy and help many more people in the futurerdquo

Card Skimmer Found on Budgens ATM The Wendover Neighbourhood Policing Team is asking residents to be extra vigilant after a card skimming device was found on the cash point outside Budgens in the High Street Wendover

It is unknown how long it has been there for and Officers are working with the staff at Budgens to look through CCTV to try and identify the offenderoffenders

The device was in two parts One was above the screen pointing down towards the keypad This was a piece of plastic the same colour as the machine and it had a very small hole in it and a small camera behind The second part was a piece of plastic which was again the same colour as the machine with a card slot on it which had a small device in it which took the details from any cards This was stuck over the part where you put your card in

The Petitioning Period has arrived 29 April to 23 May The HS2 Hybrid Billrsquos important Second Reading which despite all the evidence against is expected to be passed by a large majority as all three main parties are whipping their MPs is scheduled for on Monday 28 April It will be very interesting to see how our MP David Lidington votes and whether he considers that his position as a Minister in the Government is the most important factor in how he votes

The Wendover HS2 Action Group has already held five public meetings about Petitioning and hundreds of residents organisations and businesses in Wendover Dunsmore and Halton have indicated that they will be Petitioning against the Hybrid Bill The period in which Petitions have to be delivered to the House of Commons is from Tuesday 29 April to Friday 23 May For businesses the period ends on Friday 16 May

Petitioning is the method by which anyone ldquodirectly and specially affectedrdquo by HS2 can send in a written Petition to the House of Commons and it will be considered by the Select Committee considering the Bill If you havenrsquot yet considered Petitioning please do so now and please ask your neighbours to do so This is your last chance to get a better deal for Wendover Halton and Dunsmore That better deal is a bored tunnel right through the Chilterns AONB

Ancient woodlands are irreplaceable The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) report on High Speed 2 (HS2) calls for the Government to do much more for wildlife and habitats such as ancient woodlands which will be severely damaged by the project Responding to the report Matt Jackson head of conservation strategy at the Berks Bucks amp Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) commented ldquoIt highlights many of the issues wersquore concerned about in the way HS2 is being pushed ahead In our submission to the Environmental Statement BBOWT pointed out all the gaps in the assessment of ecological impacts Now the EAC states HS2 Ltd must carry out outstanding environmental surveys on the 40 of the route yet to be examined In spite of this lack of information MPs are being asked to make a decision on whether or not to go ahead with the project when the Hybrid Bill has a second reading on 28 Aprilrdquo

The EAC is also critical of the confusion and states ldquoThe HS2 Environmental Statement must be revised to distinguish clearly between lsquomitigationrsquo and lsquocompensationrsquo measures in respect of biodiversity and to explain the factors determining in which cases these should be applied If biodiversity loss is genuinely unavoidable and also cannot be mitigated compensation should be applied to the fullest extent possiblerdquo

If the Hybrid Bill proceeds a select committee will be formed to hear petitions from members of the public or organisations concerned about specific aspects of the proposals

BBOWT will be petitioning the select committee in respect of the two nature reserves Calvert Jubilee and Finmere Woods which will be directly impacted by HS2 and the wider issues of wildlife and habitats affected along the route

Protecting the Chilterns is number one Minimising the impact of HS2 on the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was the greatest single issue of concern to people who responded to the HS2 Environmental Statement says a report by the assessors Golder Associates

The report which was being sent to MPs before the Second Reading of the HS2 Hybrid Bill on 28

April says that tunnelling was the highest rated issue raised by the 21833 respondents and in particular a demand for a full tunnel under the entire Chilterns AONB

Chiltern Society urged all MPs to stop and think before agreeing to the Second Reading of the Bill which if passed will determine the London to Birmingham route of HS2 across the Chilterns AONB The Society has written to all 650 MPs saying the Bill sets a dangerous precedent for all protected landscapes in Britain The HS2 Environmental Statement paid little or no heed to the fact that AONBs are protected landscapes that require special consideration said Society HS2 spokesman John Gladwin Now the response to the Environmental Statement has shown that protecting AONBs is at the top of the agenda among people concerned about the environmental impact of the railway Parliaments Environmental Audit Committee took on board a number of points raised by the Society and other groups about HS2 proposals Committee chairman Joan Walley concluded The Government needs to show real commitment to dealing with the impact that HS2 will have on our countryside and wildlife Ancient woodlands and other hard to replace sites of natural value should not be subordinated to crude economic calculations of cost and benefit

Wendover Youth Forum As readers may be aware the youth forum was commissioned by the Local Area Forum to carry out a local priorities survey The full results can be found on the Wendover News website and Facebook page

The Youth Forum is led by Dave Rollins of Aylesbury Vale Youth For Christ and gathers together young people from the Wendover Deanery Anna Zoe Gavin Sarah and Zac all got involved with the Youth Forum originally through the help of Paul Hammett to help raise funds for the Amazing Donkey Youth Club and for their own personal development

The young people didnrsquot fully realise quite what was involved at the start as their journey took them from speaking to their peers canvassing opinion on youth activities to presenting to Wendover Parish Council At a Produce Market they found the courage to approach a variety of people They all processed the results of the survey together

Becky Murgatroyd the Wendover Youth Centre and St Maryrsquos church youthworker recently caught up with two of the young leaders from Amazing Donkey Youth Club to find out how the process was for them Anna and Zoe found the prospect of meeting with

Parish Council quite daunting whilst feeling very privileged to be invited to present As they completed the different tasks they grew in confidence and awareness of community needs When meeting the girls they talked about the process with excitement and there was a real buzz as they conveyed their experience They felt like had been involved in something bigger than them Both girls really benefited from the process and were glad to make a difference in their community

Wendover Youth Centre WYC held their AGM on 31 March and revealed some exciting new developments

Tony Playle welcomed a healthy number to the proceedings at the Youth Centre and announced that a huge amount of progress had been made since last yearrsquos AGM at which he was inaugurated as Chair of the Trustees

ldquoLast year we announced that Bucks County Council had withdrawn financial support and that we at WYC must stand on our own two feet or face closure We also announced an aspiration to employ a Youth Leader to spearhead the care for Wendoverrsquos youth and we are now two months into Beckyrsquos tenure which has breathed life into the Centre and put flesh on the bones of the Trusteesrsquo vision

ldquoThis has only been made possible by the people of Wendover who answered our plea for support and I would like to thank the LAST LAF Parish Council St Maryrsquos church those who have become lsquoFriends of WYCrsquo Kings Farm and the Shoulder of Mutton and the people of Wendover for contributing to our campaigns and eventsrdquo Following the financial report Tony introduced new Youth Leader Becky Murgatroyd who in turn introduced some of the young people she has been working with Mark Anna and Sarah spoke enthusiastically about the Duke of Edinburgh Award training and the many other activities that their three respective youth clubs allowed them to experience After a presentation from Premier Sport who now base themselves at the Centre and run beforeafter school activities and holiday clubs a further appeal for sponsorship was announced to build upon the success of the last year - please contact martinwyccomuk or call 07742 689930 WYC have announced that they will be throwing their doors open on 25 May for the day of the Wendover Celebrates event so if you are planning a party why not pop in and see if the Centre fits your needs

School News Paralympic Torch Visits John Colet Year 7 and 8 students at the John Colet School enjoyed a special assembly last month when they were visited by Chris Rattenbury Chris brought the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch with him and spoke about Stoke Mandevillersquos role as the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement Chris a wheelchair user has represented the UK in his chosen sport of Powerlifting He spoke about his inspiring journey into Powerlifting and the importance of rehabilitation through sport The talk was arranged through local charity Wheelpower and Chris explained the support the Charity provides to disabled athletes starting out in their career by supplying vital expensive equipment Sandy Whitehouse teacher of PE arranged the visit She said ldquoIt was a fantastic and unique experience for everyone involved and one thoroughly enjoyed by all Chris spoke brilliantly completely engaging all the studentsrdquo

The Big Pedal 2014 After reading about The Big Pedal in a recent edition of Wendover News Get Wendover Cycling decided to find out how well local schools performed The Big Pedal is a national competition designed to encourage children to scoot or cycle to school Information on the organisers website shows that in their category (primary schools with more than 150 pupils) the John Hampden Infant School scored 23147 points and was the top school in Buckinghamshire and 127th nationally Wendover C of E Junior school having fewer pupils were lower down the table but with a magnificent 18197 points

Congratulations to both schools - hopefully more pupils will be encouraged to scoot and cycle to school as a result of the Big Pedal event

Club Corner Another sporting opportunity Rounders I just wanted to let you know about a great volunteering opportunity that we are offering to any fun and enthusiastic people who can help us to get more families playing a great all inclusive sport Rounders After an extremely successful first year ldquoFamily Roundersrdquo is back this summer and is taking place in two locations in Aylesbury ndash Fairford Leys and Bedgrove

Fairford Leys Starting Tuesday 20 May and running for 8 weeks Bedgrove Starting Wednesday 21 May and running for 8 weeks 630pm - 730pm open to all (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult) We need people like you to help us with a range of roles including signing people in setting up the games umpiring score keeping and promotion Theres no need to have previous experience of delivering or playing the game as we will provide you with a briefing before the sessions start and you will be supporting a qualified coach or activator at every session All we need from you is a commitment to help us bring Rounders to local families in the Aylesbury Vale District and a passion for making sport happen We will provide you with any training you need and we will set up the Rounders eveningsall youll need to do is turn up

New Yearrsquos Eve Rebuttal In your February edition on the Wendover Parish Council page the Council says ldquoIn a meeting with Thames Valley Police and AVDC it was highlighted to the Parish Council that the New Yearrsquos Eve Anti-social Behaviour problem is worse in Wendover than in Aylesbury and seems to be increasing each yearrdquo A Freedom of Information request has elicited the following numbers of reported incidents of anti-social behaviour on New Yearrsquos Eve Aylesbury Town Wendover 200910 18 3 201011 15 2 201112 15 3 201213 18 2 It would seem from this that neither of the above comments are true as the problem is not worse in Wendover and the figures are not increasing

Cycling on Footpaths I refer to the two letters in the April newsletter Cycling on footpaths is not legal if the paths are not signed as shared Pedestrians and cyclists need to be considerate to each other On shared paths pedestrians need to be aware that cyclists may overtake them and allow for this while cyclists need to exercise due care when overtaking

could be encouraged in Wendover ndash at the same time as making Wendover a safer place for everyone For example it would be helpful if the High Street had a 20MPH limit combined with traffic calming (A survey conducted by GWC indicated strong support for this) Some time ago the John Hampden School supported by the Junior School prepared plans for a boardwalk across the canal hence providing access to the school campus via Victory Road This would have enabled cyclists scooters and parents with buggies to avoid Wharf Road In the April issue of the newsletter there is a request from the schools to parents and carers to park away from the school entrance and not to drive onto the campus There are plans to implement this regime The schools like GWC want to encourage walking and cycling We would be pleased to welcome as members anyone who wishes to support us in striving to achieve these objectives

Operation Raleigh I live in Wendover and work as a nurse in

Intensive Care at Stoke Mandeville Hospital In June I am flying to India to take up the position of Volunteer Leader with Raleigh Internationals ICS programme For three months I will be leading a group of young people from the UK as we live and work alongside rural villagers in remote India With the villagers and young people from India volunteering we will work on a sustainable project for the community This could be a school classroom or an eco toilet block - whatever the community requires Although it is not a nursing role I will be working with young people which is something I enjoy having been involved as a teenager in various youth projects locally such as campaigning for the skate park and volunteering as deputy member of the Youth Parliament for the local area As part of my volunteering role I am required to fundraise pound800 to go towards future Raleigh expeditions and raise awareness of the organisation I have planned a cupcake stall on Wendover market on 1 May and a quiz night on 10 May at St Annes Hall (696776 for tickets) Additionally I have a Just Giving page wwwjustgivingcoukHannah-Bysouth I am very passionate about this charitys work in sustainable development and the opportunities it gives young people Please visit their website for more information raleighinternationalorg

At the reception prior to their Annual Meeting on 9 April the Trustees enjoyed meeting with 20 people who represent various organisations in Wendover Shannon Kitson who received a grant from the Trust to help her develop her gifts in the Performing Arts spoke about her experiences and her hopes for the future Photos can be seen on the Wendover News website The Trustees are always supportive of ways in which they can help to develop and encourage the talent of our local young people Since last yearrsquos AGM the Trust awarded a total of pound2005238 in grants to individuals and organisations in Wendover At their meeting the Trustees considered a further 39 applications and a total of pound57600 was paid in grants as a result These were distributed as follows- Education pound747550 Elderly pound3650 Individuals pound6625 Medical Areas pound 9500 including pound5000 for the new charity Lindengate

Organisations pound30350 which included pound13000 to Wendover Swimming Pool to enable three boilers to be refurbished and a secondary heat exchanger purchased In addition the 2nd grant of pound6000 for Wendover Youth Centre promised a year ago was paid making the total grants awarded pound63600 The Trustees agreed to petition against the HS2 Hybrid Bill on the grounds that HS2 will result in a drop in the value of the Trustrsquos properties Although the majority of grants are awarded at the Annual Meeting applications are considered and grants are awarded throughout the year Anyone who lives in the parish of Wendover or the Moor Park Estate who wishes to know more about the Trust or to apply for a grant should consult the website wwwwendovertrustorg and contact The Clerk at 14A Vicarage Close W e n d o v e r H P 2 2 6 D S o r e m a i l clerkwendovertrustorg giving a contact

View From The Chair As we near the end of the Parish Year I would like to thank all staff and Councillors for their support and help not forgetting the two Councillors who resigned We have achieved many positive things over the last year and one of the best was the appointment of our clerk Charlotte I would like to publicly thank her for all her hard work and endeavour

The Clock Tower repairs are underway and the plan is for all works to be complete by Wendover Celebrates on 25 May

Car parking is still high on the agenda Constructive discussions have been taking place with AVDC and will continue

Plans for commemorating WW1 are also underway An open meeting will take place on 30 April and as soon as plans have been firmed up they will be published

The Parish Council has decided on the points it wishes to emphasise for the Petition against the HS2 Hybrid Bill currently going through Parliament Discussions continue with the Wendover Society Halton PC and Action Against HS2 the Petition will be submitted shortly

Councillor Co-option We still need another Councillor but unfortunately the two people who did not win the election have not put themselves forward for co-option Everyone has the right to call an election but should be aware that the cost to the Parish Council was pound348782 We hope to have more interest from individuals for a co-option in June currently we only have one candidate Please consider joining us we are a dedicated group of local people working for the Community

Hanging Baskets Last year the flower baskets in the High Street were a great success hopefully to be repeated this year They should be put up in May once there is no further risk of frost

Clock Tower Progress Now that the scaffolding is erected the builders and conservation experts have been able to thoroughly inspect the damaged structure for the first time and the news is good Much of the damage can be repaired using tried and tested methods that donrsquot require the drastic dismantling that was at first thought necessary This means that the project will proceed to schedule and that budget over-runs should be avoided In fact we might find a small saving results from this new approach

There was a concern that we may have bats in the belfry which could have delayed the start of the work but that has proved to be unfounded

The Clerk has now relocated to a small office above Twist should you need to visit please telephone first and make an appointment The phone number is the same The CIO office has relocated to the Library

Defibrillators There are a number of defibs already in Wendover apart from the two being installed at each end of the High Street If you know of any please tell us their location so we can produce an up-to-date list
