Sunday afternoon teas at St Mary’s Sundays 2-5pm, St Mary’s Centre Tea and homemade cakes. Why not come and relax in the friendly atmosphere and take a look around the beautiful church? Open every summer Sunday. Wendover Music, The Hilliard Ensemble Saturday 6 July, 7.30 at St Mary's Church, Wendover. The last concert in the regular Wendover Music series 2013 features the Hilliard Ensemble: one of the world's finest vocal chamber groups performs highlights of 40 years of music making and performs choral favourites from across the ages. Unrivalled for its formidable reputation in the fields of both early and new music, The Hilliard is one of the world's finest vocal chamber groups. Its distinctive style and highly developed musicianship engage the listener as much in medieval and renaissance repertoire as in works specially written by living composers. Then in the autumn we can look forward to Wendover Music Jazz Extra. Jazz Extra Saturday 19 Oct, 7.30 at St Mary's Church, Wendover The Chris Garrick & John Ethridge Quartet present an evening of jazz, including musical tributes to Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. CHRIS GARRICK is the world's leading jazz violinist and is at home on the South Bank as a soloist or in a seedy jazz club; Nigel Kennedy is his biggest fan. With John Etheridge, who tours as a duo regularly with classical guitarist John Williams and who played with Stephane Grappelli for five years in the 1970s, they recreate the famous Grappelli and Django Reinhardt sound as well as performing their own compositions www.wendovermusic.org.uk

The charity encourages local disabled folk – whatever their disability, physical or mental - to take part in the performing arts. It is based at Queen’s Park Centre in Aylesbury. This is the charity’s only annual fund raising event and provides the financing for the charity’s work. That work has been so successful and popular with its members that we have recently started a second group of performers, enabling twice as many local disabled folk to participate. For 10 years, this Garden Party has been growing and now attracts over 150 people so a bigger venue has been found at Aylesbury Rugby Club HP22 5RN

The show will be hosted by Dez Kay of Stoke Mandeville Hospital Radio (www.dezkay.co.uk) and feature Paul Megram (www.paulmegram.com) aka Colonel Custard. Over lunch you will also be entertained by the sophisticated strings of ZHL. ZHL will be followed by a short performance by both groups of Jigsaw’s actors, so that you can see who and what you are really supporting. Jigsaw’s performance will be followed by a charity auction of some great donated items, conducted by a surprise auctioneer! HS2

2013 www.wendovernews.co.uk 9

Your homework is to respond by 11 July to the EIA consultation. There are 4,500 of you within 1 km of the line. This is rushed because HS2 needs to file the Hybrid bill by the end of 2013. HS2 are “consulting” in the Memorial Hall on 29 June. WHS2 has prepared notes (see website), but the EIA draft detail is very perfunctory. Noise diagrams assume perfect trains with low noise performance. These are supposed to be “proven technology” but they don’t exist as yet. HS2 believes that the “settlement” of Wendover is in Chiltern District and has done no assessment of the impact on the village and its tourism. Construction will be over three years 2018-2020 (starting mid 2017 with footpath closures). The first thing will be digging a huge cutting along the west side of the village. A large semicircular roof is then built over the top. This is mostly above the ground level; only over Ellesborough road is it eventually buried. The option of a bored tunnel under the Chilterns is dismissed with no evidence given. Demand a real tunnel. The Wendover area has been fantastic at supporting the appeal. We donated £15,000. It is never fun paying lawyers but the government has been acting tough on costs. The appeal was on 10 June. The result should be known in July but is unlikely to be conclusive.

Finally, watch how David Lidington MP votes on the sneaky paving bill, if he does. HS2 Ltd wants to spend £1 billion cash with no oversight in this Parliament. A major Stop HS2 conference is also on 29

June - the

Wendover Group is presenting, worth going. Four days in Court: what we supported through HS2AA Day One: HS2AA argued that a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of the route options should have been done first, was legally needed and was not done (it was all rushed by Labour ahead of the election). In December, the Judge ruled that the Government did not constrain Parliament by only proposing one option as it was like a private developer.

Day two: In court, the Government argued that it does not tell Parliament what to do so another route could be chosen. In Parliament, the Government suddenly said it will allow time in the hybrid bill to consult on the final EIA.

Days Three and Four: the government argued that it could do the SEA if needed within the hybrid bill !! HS2AA repeated that the SEA had to be done first and that the Jan 2012 decision set the framework for all future decisions on HS2 as it will be hard for Parliament to consider anything else. The three judges might refer this to Europe or they may give an opinion.

Thank you John Hampden Fun Run April 21 2013 Many thanks to all the parents, children and helpers who took part in the John Hampden Fun Run. Springtime snow put a stop to our original date of the 24 March, but we were rewarded by a beautiful sunny day on 21 April. 47 people took part in the challenging 5k and 10k run through the beautiful Wendover Woods, and over 50 children ran in the 1k event, raising almost £1500 for the school and all getting fitter at the same time. I would also like to thank the Forestry Commission for letting us run on their trails and the Harpenden Building Society for providing the refreshments. We do hope this will become an annual event. Wendover Community Lunch for Christian Aid 2013 Nearly 100 people from the Churches and Community gathered together for an excellent Ploughman’s Lunch in The Christian Centre on Tuesday 7 May. We hope, whether you came on your own, or with friends, you felt a warm welcome. When the takings were combined with what was earned with the Cake Stall and Raffle, we have been able to send

over £700 to Christian Aid. The local Committee are very grateful to all who came, and to local shops and businesses who helped with donations of money or gifts including Julian’s, Number One, The Pack Horse, Agora, Rumseys, Co-op, Budgens, Worlds End Garden Centre, No2 Pound Street, Lady Grey tea-rooms, Crumbs, Robina, Tesco, Ashco (Aylesbury), Morrisons, Marks and Spencer, Antiques at Wendover, Scruples, Costa Coffee. Plant Sale The annual Plant Sale run by Wendover Free Church on Saturday 18 May raised just over £1000, despite the cold spring weather and hailstone attacks on young plants early in May. Many thanks to all who came along, regulars or new customers. All proceeds with be sent for projects in Jinja, Uganda. Christian Aid Week The Christian Aid Committee would like to thank all those who returned their red envelopes during Christian Aid Week with donations which will benefit some

of the neediest people in the world. We are especially grateful to those who made a special effort to give in their envelope having missed the door-to-door

collection! Without a huge team of volunteers we could only cover a fraction of the streets and so special thanks are due to all who generously gave their time. We collected over £3500 which has been sent to Christian Aid. Coombe Hill Run Paul & Mel, of The White Swan, would like to thank all involved in organising the Coombe Hill Run 2013, another wonderful event & day. Congratulations to all the competitors, especially the ‘White Swan’ team whose efforts have helped raise in excess of £1200 to be divided between ‘The Aylesbury Area Disabled Club’ & ‘The Chiltern Dog Rescue Society’. A big thank-you to all who donated especially Dayla, JFC Eng , Dove Networks & W JG Distribution. Well done all! Editor’s note: a selection of photos and a short video of the Run can be seen on t h e W en d o ve r N e ws we b s i t e www.wendovernews.co.uk. Type Coombe Hill Run into the Search facility.

News from Wendover Health Centre 01296 623452 Changes to Usual Opening Hours On Wednesday 17 July we will be closed from 13:00 for staff training. Dr N Arif replacing Dr C Collier Dr Nighat Arif, who has been working with us as a locum since February, has been appointed to a six session salaried position to replace Dr Catherine Collier from 1 July 2013. We are very pleased to welcome her to the doctor team at Wendover. Making the most of your appointment Appointments with doctors and nurses are timed at 10 minute intervals. In order to make the best use of the time available when you see the doctor or nurse, please try and be clear about what it is you are concerned about and what you are expecting from the appointment. It may help to write down a few notes to make sure you remember everything that is important to you. If you have more than one problem you wish to discuss please

state this early in the consultation, this will allow for you and your doctor to agree on priorities for the time available. It is not always be possible for the doctor to deal with all of the problems in one appointment, and therefore she or he may ask you to return on another occasion. Changes to the NHS On 1 April 2013 the NHS in England saw its biggest reorganisation ever. Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) are now at the cornerstone of the management of the NHS. CCGs commission the majority of health services, including acute and elective hospital care and mental health services, handling 60% of the NHS budget. All GP practices are part of a CCG; Westongrove belongs to the Aylesbury Vale CCG, which covers a population of about 200,000 in the northern half of Buckinghamshire. If you have any specific concerns about your hospital treatment, please continue

to discuss them with your usual GP who is best placed to know how to respond. For more information about the local C C G , p l e a s e s e e h t t p : / /www.aylesburyvaleccg.nhs.uk/. This website includes information about how you can get involved in improving health care provision. Health cover overseas If you are travelling outside the UK for your holidays you should take out insurance that will cover you for any health emergencies that may occur. Remember to declare any long-term conditions that you are suffering from, otherwise you will not be covered for any problems that occur related to that condition. Within Europe you should also carry an up-to-date European Health Insurance Card; these are available free of charge from the Department of Health (see http://w w w . n h s . u k / N H S E n g l a n d /H e a l t h c a r e a b r o a d / E H I C / Pa g e s /Introduction.aspx).

I Wendover Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce launched its I Wendover Loyalty Card Scheme at a stall in the Manor Waste Thursday Market on 2

February 2013. It was an immediate success with over 500 loyalty cards being sold that day at the bargain price of only £1. The cards continue to be available from most participating businesses and most High Street businesses are members of WCTC so the cards are widely available where the “use it here” s i g n i s displayed. The offers for each month are always shown in an advert on page 2 or 3 of Wendover News and are frequently updated online, easily accessible at www.wendoverloyaltycard.com . For readers who do not have easy access to the internet, Wendover Community Library has computers for exactly this sort of purpose and a frequently updated poster showing all the offers is displayed in the window of Wendover Hardware. The offers are not only from retail businesses. Since launch, the number of loyalty card holders has risen to 2000. A household can own multiple cards so each household member can have one. If you give your email address to WCTC, you will be emailed a list of offers once a month. Your email address will not be used for any other purpose.

Tring Road Traffic Lights You may recall last year a young mother and her son were hit by a car failing to stop at the traffic lights on Tring Road. The same thing nearly happened again in June, but to my nearly 2 year old daughter. I was crossing the road at the traffic lights with my daughter on her trike. Just as we were about to cross two cars came from the clock tower direction, travelling at about 60-70 mph, I didn't even get a chance to see the model or colour of the cars. Since the accident last year, many people including myself, have witnessed cars failing to stop at the traffic lights on many occasions. This crossing is used by many school children and is so dangerous. I feel sick at how close I came to losing my youngest daughter and feel something needs to be done. After speaking to many departments and organisations including the Police and Bucks Transport Service, I have been told that it is not possible to have traffic light cameras installed until there have been 5 collisions at the site in 5 years! The Parish Council and new County Councillor have been helpful and are keen to carry out speed watch sessions in the area, the issue will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting on Monday 1 July.

Weston Turville Reservoir A reader has alerted Wendover News to the recent appearance of 2 parallel fences which prevent walking access on the only path that was directly next to the water’s edge, at Weston Turville Reservoir. It is now impossible to walk near enough to the water to be able to see frogspawn and tadpoles or for children to “fish” with their little nets or even see this beautiful expanse of water from the whole northern side of the reservoir which has such a calming effect on children and adults alike. There is now only one very short concrete path from where the public can view the lake at the top end near Weston Turville, but you can’t access the water’s edge from that side. You cannot see the lake as you walk round the rest of the paths, now that the whole north side path has been blocked off. It seems that a local Angling Club has erected these fences so they can fish without members of the public disturbing them. It would therefore appear that they have not considered the effect on families and others who regularly visit the reservoir as a leisure facility and for contact with nature. Local interested parties including the Canal and Rivers Trust and BBOWT have been contacted. The investigation is at an early stage, but please contact Wendover News if you have any information to add - especially if you are concerned about blocking public access to the reservoir water’s edge.

Fair stood the wind for France (well there was certainly a ‘fair’ amount of it blowing in t h a t direction!), as our party of twenty four, braved the unseasonably cold and b l u s t e r y showers to board the coach at Ashbrook for the biennial T w i n n i n g Assoc iat ion exchange visit to Liffré. It wasn’t long before we found ourselves joining the M25 where (quelle surprise!), we promptly ground to a halt in the late afternoon heavy traffic around Heathrow! Oh well, time for the iPod I suppose. Now what shall it be, ‘Road to Nowhere’ by the band ‘Talking Heads’ or Chris Rea’s ‘Road to Hell?’ Managing to extricate ourselves from the congestion by escaping down the remarkably free-flowing M3, we were soon speeding past Hampshire heathland en route for Portsmouth and the waiting ferry. It has to be said at this point that if you ever get the opportunity to sample a Brittany Ferries restaurant buffet – do! You will not

be disappointed. Friday morning saw us docking at the historic town of St Malo and

after an hour’s drive, we duly arrived at our twin town of Liffré where the ‘entente’ was warmly reaffirmed with plenty of ‘cordiale!’ No time for a lie-in on Saturday however, as we gathered sleepily in the early morning sunshine for a coach tr ip to the Guérande peninsula in the département Loire-Atlantique. There in the village of Saillé we observed the age-old method of

producing sea salt from the marshes and after lunch, enjoyed a guided tour of the medieval town of Guérande with its impressive, ramparts and fortified gates. Well worth a visit!

to Liffré Sunday also dawned warm and sunny and the morning was a time for relaxing with our hosts, which in the writer’s case consisted of a walk around Liffré’s Sunday street market to buy some locally supplied French cheeses (good thing we remembered the freezer blocks!). The a f t e r n o o n s a w several of the group meeting up at the G a r d e n s o f Brocé l iande, a fascinating place conceived with the aim of creating t r a i n i n g opportunities and employment for p e o p l e w i t h disabilities. Located a short distance from Rennes, the gardens have an appeal for all age groups and are home to an important collection of irises and lilacs. The final social event of the trip was an evening of traditional ‘Gallo’ music and dance typical of eastern Brittany (as opposed to the Celtic ‘Breton’ west), organized by the twinning committee of the neighbouring village of La Bouëxière, where we mingled with their twinning counterparts from Wingrave!

Boarding the coach for home on Monday morning, yes there was sadness at having to part from our kind and generous hosts, but this was eclipsed by the warm feeling of friendship which seems to be further enhanced with each exchange. After

stopping off for lunch in Caen, we watched the coast of France recede into the distance, from the sun deck of Brittany Ferries MV Normandie, glass in hand reflecting on what a superbly enjoyable trip it had been. Next year it is the turn of our French friends to visit us, so the Wendover committee wil l short ly start

planning the programme. If this has whetted your appetite and you would like to know more about Twinning or could offer accommodation, please get in touch with one of the following committee members: we’d love to hear from you. Barbara 01296 624708, Glynis 01296 625565, Mike 01296 622778

Hundreds of people enjoyed a glorious af ternoon in the Chilterns, meeting at St M a r y ’ s , D r a y t o n Beaucham p. Four guided tours took visitors down to the restoration site to see the volunteers in action restoring the canal. Margaret Leishman and her band of volunteers made copious cups of tea and served many slices of handmade cakes. Mervyn Ramsay was on hand to take the heat out of the situation with ice lollies. The Knights of Harmony Barbershop Chorus staged two spellbinding performances in the church, a chance for visitors to sit down and get out of the sun. St Mary’s vicar Reverend Elizabeth Moxley stayed all afternoon and was instrumental in allowing the Trust to use the Church as a base, arranging for furniture to be borrowed and neighbouring farmer Bob Woodman for allowing car parking in his field. Martin Deaney and Peter Elwin did a magnificent job of shoe-horning as many cars into the field as possible.

Unfortunately the day coincided with the annual sheep shearing, so space was limited. Not all visitors arrived by car, several cycled and a number walked. We even picked up some walkers along the

towpath who wondered what was going on. Michael and Greta Wright did a roaring trade selling Grand Draw tickets and Jill Pearce sold a range of Trust merchandise. Beryl Martin deputised for Katherine taking membership applications. R e t i r e d r e s t o r a t i o n volunteers Barry Martin and Brian Lansley talked to v i s i t o r s a b o u t t h e restoration and history of the Arm. Chris Sargeant, Margaret Dunn, John Reynolds and Jenny Brice took four large groups of visitors down to the restoration site to see the work first hand. Restoration Director Roger Leishman gave a talk and answered questions, such as when will it be finished.

The Restoration team is working systematically re-profiling and lining the canal bed f rom Drayton Beauchamp back to the first wooden footbridge. Block laying was the order of the day. Their boots were covered in a few inches of sticky mud, the result of heavy rain in the week leading up to the working party. Back at the church there was plenty of time to sit down and enjoy the afternoon complete with pre-booked sunshine. We were very lucky with the weather, not too hot or wet and cold. This event wouldn’t have been

possible without the organisation lead by Katherine Deaney, John Reynolds and Jenny Brice, not to mention all the other volunteers who made the day a success.

If you enjoyed the day or would like to come to a future open day, why not

offer your services? Contact Katherine to volunteer – Tel: 07547 181857 or

email at [email protected]

No need to pre-book, just turn up. £4 per session. For more details about The Wendover Sewing Bee and Plain Stitch sewing classes at Fabric HQ, please contact Rae:[email protected] or Deb: [email protected] or drop in to Fabric HQ upstairs at The Courtyard Gallery, 25 High Street, Wendover. Wendover Tennis and Squash Club We suffered what can only be described as a mindless act of vandalism on our Clubhouse in the middle of June, when it was broken into in what looks like a search for money which is never held on the

premises. The annual Seniors and Juniors Tennis Tournaments are progressing through the early rounds, with Finals Day on Saturday 13 July: with a Hog Roast following the prize giving at 6:00pm. John Colet Students Rise to The Toyota Challenge Four John Colet students took part in the Toyota Stem Challenge, a national competition which invites students, aged 11-16, to design and build an environmentally friendly model vehicle. The John Colet team beat off strong competition from 280 other schools, and were delighted to make it to the South East Regional Final, which took place at Duxford Air Museum. ‘The Indestructible Nerds’: Jack Lucky and George Perry (year 9), and Nico Pope and Ben Frost (year 8); were thrilled to be selected for the South East regional final. This next stage asked the teams to race their model car, and give an oral presentation to the judges and other teams. Teams had to apply their knowledge and understanding from a wide range of curriculum subjects including Technology, Mathematics and English. The testing of the cars took place under the wing of concord at the Duxford Air Museum. Our team worked really well together using all our different interests and skills.

Leader required for Guides Wendover Guides gives local girls the opportunity to have fun, challenge themselves and develop and gain confidence in a safe environment. The girls, aged between ten and fourteen, are very enthusiastic and enjoy coming to the weekly meetings to try outdoor activities, crafts and badge work and to work in teams. The current leader of the Monday evening Guides is moving away from the area. There are two other adult volunteers who help plan events and run the meetings but a third adult is required. Previous experience is not needed as all necessary training will be given. If you enjoy working with young people, helping your community and are interested in volunteering to take on this very rewarding role, or would like to find out more, please phone Mary on 01296 624464 or email : [email protected] or D iana on 07932 129216 or [email protected] . Mid Bucks Beekeepers June was a good month for the honeybee, with colonies

expanding on the late spring forage and storing honey for the first time this year. This is about 6 weeks later than in a normal year and reflects the poor weather we all have experienced this year. With the delayed buildup, it is likely that swarming will continue throughout July. If you suspect that you have discovered a swarm please verify it on our website www.mbbka.org.uk and then call our Swarm Officer on 07850 085 767. This month’s Apiary meeting is on Wednesday 17 July and will be themed on products of the hive.

Wendover Cricket Club Wendover Cricket Club’s 1st XI is riding high at the top of the Mid Bucks League’s First Division after winning 5 of their 6 games so far. Highlights include Jon Green’s 45, Tom McPartlan’s 36 and Dave Gulliver’s 4 for 41 in the narrow win by 5 runs v Bourne End. George Robinson’s 4 for 27 in the only defeat so far against Little Gaddesden. James Harrington scoring 67 and 65 in consecutive games, Tom Cornick 5 for 41 and Gulliver again with 6 for 35. In the Knockout Cup, an 8 run win over Prestwood was achieved in part due to

G Robinson’s 33, McPartlan 20* and Clyde Breetzke’s 3 wickets. Meanwhile the 2nd XI have found the going tough with weakened early season teams and have had 4 consecutive defeats which leaves them 8th in Division 2. George Robinson has been scoring heavily on Sundays with 76 at Farnham Royal and 53 at Long Marston, where brother Matt outscored him with 76, yet it hasn’t been enough to win games. The best bowling was Seb Barr’s 3 for 25 and Chris Hunt has twice taken 2 wickets. The junior sides are performing strongly in all age groups. In the Aylesbury District League, both U9 teams are currently second and the U15’s are also second. In the Bucks Leagues, the U11s have won both their games in Division 4, the U13s are top of games in Division 4, the U13s are top of Div. 2 after 3 games, the U14s top of Div.3 and so are the U15s in Division 2. Training for all age groups and seniors continues on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. For more information, contact Richard Peck (juniors) on 01296-624209 or Jonathan Seabrook (seniors) on 01296-623286.

Farewell our County Councillor As my term of office as a County Councillor comes to an end, I would like to thank you all for the support you have given me and the confidence you have shown in me to represent you on Buckinghamshire County Council. It has been a great privilege to represent Wendover and Halton; great fun at times, but also a real challenge in the increasingly difficult financial situation that all local authorities have had to face. I wish my successor the very best for his time as your Councillor. I sincerely hope that he will work closely with our District and Parish Councillors for the benefit of our communities. It is really important that Wendover and Halton – and now of course part of Stoke Mandeville – have a constructive voice on County Council matters. I am not bowing out completely, and will continue to do my best in other ways for the villages I have represented for the past 14 years.

Vandalism I am writing to express my shock to hear that somebody hurled a brick through the window of the car used by the Children's Centre. The Children's Centre provides a valuable resource to families like ours in the village and the car is used by staff not only to move equipment and staff members around but also allows them to provide a taxi

service for children who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend certain sessions. This mindless act of vandalism would have put the car out of action for as long as it took to fix the window and a staff member away from regular duties as they took it to be mended. The car is not only used at the Wendover centre but other centres in the local area too, so there would have been a knock on effect. I'm really saddened that a low cost, high value resource available to young families has suffered at the hands of some bored and stupid individual(s) who have nothing better to do than cause damage for kicks. The Children's Centre is run by Barnardo’s as a charity, often relying on donations and volunteers so I am sure that they can little afford extra outgoings like this. No doubt there are many other families in Wendover who appreciate the brilliant service provided by the team there and who would echo my thoughts. Let’s hope this never happens again.

Name & address supplied Raffle: Response to Vandalism You maybe aware that during half term some ne’er-do-wells put the Children’s Centre’s car out of action with a brick through the window. The impact locally was quite severe and obviously impacted on the

care and assistance that was provided to the vulnerable, disabled and families in need of support. They provide great things from Daddy Cool bi weekly group (children under 5) to baby massaging and first aid courses. Therefore with the assistance of Wendover retailers, I have decided to organise a raffle. Prizes have been very generously donated by Peach Lane Studios, The Chequers Weston Turville, Rumseys, A Little Bird Told Me Gallery, Number One, No2 Pound Street, The Shoulder of Mutton to name but a few. More prizes are arriving daily. The draw will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 25 July at the weekly market where I will be selling tickets on a charity stall. I am trying to raise enough to donate and install a CCTV for the Centre. Raffle tickets will be available through the Clock Tower, Peach Lane photography and myself ADH Window Cleaning. I will happily come to your door by your invitation to save you coming out. Please telephone me on 07777 654383. In addition to the draw, I have a signed Wasps rugby shirt which is being framed by la little bird and will be either auctioned locally or on EBay . If anyone wishes to bid locally, please contact Wendover News using the contact details on the front page or through Wendover News Facebook.

Use it or lose it You may be aware that Wendover Youth Centre (WYC) lost all funding from the County Council last year and now must become self-sustaining or face closure. WYC, geographically and metaphorically at the heart of Wendover’s youth community – opposite the John Hampden School, provides a multitude of opportunities for young people and has helped generations of Wendoverians advance socially, in sport, in play, in employability and in education in a safe and supportive environment for twenty-seven years. It now desperately needs to raise funding to run the centre and provide the best facilities for our children. Volunteer If you are able to spare a couple of hours, one morning per week, please call Emma on 07747 442375 or pop into the Café between 08.30 and 10.30. It’s fun, rewarding and very sociable.

To book WYC for your children’s party or event please call Tony on 07742 689930. See advert on p12.

What can I do? • Make a donation to the WYC appeal • Hold your child’s party at WYC • Enjoy a coffee at the Wharf Café • Join the merry volunteers at the Café • Give a small amount monthly and make a huge difference to Wendover

Friends of WYC If you can spare £5 or £10 per month to support the work of WYC please complete the ‘Friends’ form and we’ll do the rest. Wharf Café The Café is open for business every weekday morning between 0830 and 1030. We aim to provide a convivial atmosphere for parents and children dropping off siblings at the schools but would welcome a more diverse clientele.

If you would like to volunteer at the Café or run a complementary coffee

Local Face : Sandra Maizels

July 2013 www.wendovernews.co.uk 23

Sandra’s early years were spent in Willesden, London, where her father was a well known musician. She learnt piano, violin and flute but her chief love was singing with her first stage appearance at six in “The Gondoliers”. She taught music for nine years in a comprehensive school in Neasden, London as head of the music department, which brought the opportunity to mount the first ever schools performance of the abridged version of Handel’s “Passion of Christ”. She also had the pleasure of taking pupils to Covent Garden Opera House where she managed to clock up twenty one performances of “Swan Lake”. The most nerve racking part of these trips involved travelling on the tube changing at Piccadilly Circus and doing frantic head counts to make sure they were all there. At the same time she was singing semi-professionally on TV and radio. On marriage (45 years ago), she and Alan moved to the United States where they lived for five years and Sandra worked in St Christopher’s Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia, as a play therapist. Their two children were born in the States, a daughter in Philadelphia and a son in Boston. On their return they lived in Sanderstead,

Surrey where their children were brought up, and Sandra changed to primary teaching but still as a music specialist. Ridgeway Junior School soon boasted two choirs, the senior choir giving shortened performances of “Trial by Jury”, “The Mikado” and “The Pirates of Penzance.” It was during this period that, after reading an account of a narrowboat holiday by a boy in her class, they decided to try it and were soon hooked; she and Alan still spend a few weeks each year cruising on canals and rivers in a shared narrowboat.

With ageing parents this side of the river and children in university they decided to move, and chose Weston Turville for their new home where they have lived for over twenty years. They soon became immersed in local life, Alan joining Rotary in Great Missenden, and Sandra picking up the threads of her career in school music, teaching briefly in Halton and Beaconsfield, followed by High Wycombe Music Centre. The commute to work early in the morning was sheer pleasure, dr iving through the countryside which changed with the seasons, a far cry from inner London where her career began.

She took up handbell ringing which was introduced to schools and soon had the largest junior handbell team in the country, even performing in the Royal Albert Hall at the millennium. The Thame Concert Band, in which she played, lost their conductor and, for two years, she had the pleasure of conducting them, creating the Kids

-Aid concerts which raised thousands for charity. Both Alan and Sandra were founders of the Weston Turville Historical Society, and support the Wendover Arm Trust, hoping to see the project completed so they can do their shopping by boat! Sandra has been active in Wendover ever since the Rotary Club of Wendover & District was formed and this year has the privilege of leading them as their president and is often to be seen on the Manor Waste selling cakes on a stall to raise money for local charities. She is looking forward to supporting PACE and School-Aid as the major charities, and hopes to complete the international project of providing a school library for Tembisa Secondary School in a township in South Africa, with help from other local clubs and schools.

View from the Chair A big welcome to Charlotte Hewes, our new Clerk, who we welcome to Wendover. Charlotte is getting her feet firmly under the desk at the Clock Tower and with only a week gone (as I write) it seems that Charlotte has been a familiar face for a lot longer.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

Hello: your new Parish Clerk Having started in my new role just over a week ago (as I type this) I’m getting to know the area better and meeting with local contacts. I have come to Wendover from Hughenden Parish Council so ‘Clerking’ is not new to me, but even so, it is surprising how much the role differs from Parish to Parish. Moving to Wendover I have ‘lost a burial ground but gained a market’ and there is certainly plenty to learn! I am proud to be working in such a beautiful Parish with so many excellent shops and facilities literally on the doorstep and a clear sense of ‘community’. As well as a new job I am still getting used to a new name, having married my husband Paul on 19 May. I have a number of hobbies that keep me busy outside of work including making silver jewellery, birdwatching (though I don’t class myself as a ‘twitcher’) and coarse fishing. I’m keen to see what fish we have at the Hampden Pond so I hope all you regular anglers will welcome a lady to the pond! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Parish Councillors who have made me feel so welcome as well as the fantastic team of staff at the

Parish Council who remain very patient with me asking numerous questions.

Charlotte Hewes

Drummer Lee Rigby It was a sobering sight to see the flowers left at the War Memorial on the Manor Waste honouring the soldier who was so brutally murdered in Woolwich recently. On Wednesday 29th May women and children associated with RAF Halton held a two minute silence in his memory and laid flowers in his honour. The Parish Council would like to state its deep respect for Drummer Rigby and its sadness at his cruel and unnecessary death. This death will not be forgotten. Manor Waste/Illegal Parking Further to the WPC article on the front of last month’s Wendover News, it is necessary to emphasise the danger cause d b y veh ic l es pa rk ing thoughtlessly in an area where people expect to walk freely and safely. Bollards around the perimeter of the Manor Waste are removed for the weekly market on Thursdays, the Local Produce Market, Charity Markets etc., it is unfortunate that it has become a habit with some motorists to take advantage of this on a regular basis. Apart from the danger to pedestrians, disabled scooters, children with scooters etc., damage is being caused to the paved surface. The Manor Waste is already in a poor

condition and plans are in progress to rectify this when the area is refurbished, but the constant illegal parking does not help the situation. WHS2 Grant A request for a £5000 grant towards the costs of the appeal following the Judicial Review was received in May from Wendover HS2. Although the HS2 Action Alliance has now raised the money they need, the request has been granted to show the Parish Council’s continued support and help in the general fight to save our Village and the surrounding countryside. Volunteers Volunteers are needed to work with Thames Valley Police in helping to identify speeding motorists in the Village. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and being trained to use the detection equipment, please contact the Clerk’s office. Litter on Station Approach We are pleased to be able to report that, before any action could be taken by WPC, Chiltern Railways have acted of their own accord to resolve the problem. We would like to thank them for their action and hope they will be able to keep the problem at bay. Community Information Office The opening hours for the Community Information Office at the Clock Tower, are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 4pm.
