Voices for Esmé Concert - 7 NovNearly everyone loves the variety of Male Voice choir singing, with its spine-tingling four part harmonies and great contrasts from quietly reflective to full-throated choruses. And you can look forward to the choir’s dynamic young Musical Director Jonathan Kilhams coaxing the very best out of this popular and entertaining choir for this very special cause. When the men of Weybridge Male Voice Choir take to the concert stage, they never fail to entertain. Add to that a

couple of solo spots by members of the choir and perhaps a guest group; it will all add up to an evening to thoroughly enjoy and remember.

Let the Chilterns Sing - 21 NovThe most splendiferous LTCS concert yet. This year Wendover Rotary and Wendover Parish Council are organising a “not to be missed” Wendover Remembers Concert at St Mary’s Church Wendover. Tickets on sale 14 October from JUST or online.

“Bette Davis on the Edge” - 28 NovProfessional Theatre comes to Wendover! Fresh from an exciting run of performances Off Broadway and throughout the US, Christine St John presents her meticulously researched play, “Bette Davis on the Edge”. On an evening in October 1962, Bette Davis awaits the reviews of her latest film “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”. OCTOBER 1915During October there was much activity in the Balkans area. The Triple Alliance – Germany, Austria and Bulgaria – attacked Serbia and the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, was virtually destroyed. Many Serbian civilians were killed by the occupying troops. An Anglo-French force landed in Salonika in Greece to support Serbia. The Montenegrin frontier was attacked by Austrian troops. On the Western Front fighting continued around Loos. Nurse Edith Cavell was shot by the Germans for helping British prisoners to escape from Belgium into Holland. World opinion was outraged.

It was in October 1915 that Samuel Harding of Wendover enlisted. Samuel was one of the 11 children born to George and Ann Harding of Dundee Cottage, Aylesbury Road - where the Health Centre now stands. In addition, George and Ann adopted Ann’s nephew, Harry Caudrey, who grew up in the Harding household. Four of the 11 children died in infancy and the mother Ann died in 1902, leaving 10 year old Annie to care for the young family. Of the surviving five sons George, the eldest, was the only one not to join the Army. The other four boys served

during the war and three of them – Edward, Samuel and Sydney were killed.

The second son, Samuel, was born in 1887 and before the war worked as a Haybinder. He enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery and fought in France and Belgium. Samuel took part in the Passchendaele offensive and it was during the final push to take Passchendaele village that Samuel was wounded. He died of his wounds on 29 November 1917.

Edward, the third son, was a Regular soldier who had joined the 1st Battalion Ox and Bucks Light Infantry in 1907 aged 19. After serving in India the Battalion was transferred in November 1914 to Mesopotamia. The 1st Battalion Ox and Bucks were among the 10,000 British and Indian soldiers who were besieged by the Turks in the town of Kut on the River Tigris. After three failed efforts to relieve Kut the British troops had no option but to surrender. They were ill-treated and force-marched towards captivity in Turkey. During the last stage of this terrible march , on or about 20 June 1916, Edward Harding died. Sydney Harding was born in 1894 and joined the 12th Battalion South Wales Borderers. When Sydney was serving at Clery-sur-

Somme in France the Battalion Headquarters, in which he was working as an orderly, received a direct hit from an enemy mortar. Sydney was severely wounded and died on 11 March 1917. The Bucks Advertiser of 24 March reported that “Sincere sorrow has been occasioned amongst his many friends in the district by the news that Pte Harding...has made the supreme sacrifice by giving his life for his country...He was 23 years of age and before the war had been employed as a gardener”.

The youngest Harding brother, Ewart, after unsuccessfully attempting to join the Army aged 16, eventually enlisted in the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He saw active service in France and Belgium and survived the war, as did his cousin Harry Caudrey who served with the 2/4 Battalion Ox and Bucks. The Harding family had gone beyond the call of duty and paid a great price. Five members had fought in various theatres of the war-Mesopotamia, France and Belgium and three of them had died. The names of Edward, Samuel and Sydney are inscribed on the Wendover War memorial.

With thanks to Graham Pare for his family history and the use of his photographs.

Wendover Youth Centre is a place for young people to learn, grow, have fun and discover who they are in a safe place that they can call their own. So how could we create a sense of space that celebrates identity and individuality, while also recognising that they

belong to different groups and the Youth Centre? We brought in Andrea Routledge, a local artist/designer, and started a Space

Creation Project. Andrea came to our three main youth sessions and worked with groups of young people. Everyone had a square of fabric to write their name and things that were important to them and why they enjoyed the group. 64 squares were then sewn together to create the banner. Andrea created the middle piece that brings the whole thing together. The banner project was an incredible piece of youth work that took a term and a half to create. Young people that wouldn’t necessarily engage with art did, and those that would sometimes feel their art work was not good enough, or never got picked to be up on a wall at school or on the fridge at home, created something that they can be proud of for all to see. This project bought young people and groups together, and demonstrates a sense of individual identity. The centre piece creates a sense of unity and belonging. Thank you to Andrea and her family, all the young people and volunteers and Dr Colin Riley for making this happen.

School’s back and the Select Committee are in business after a summer break. They started hearing new petitions on 7 September and Wendover was clearly in their sights with many local petitions to be heard on that and subsequent days. As you would expect, Wendover Parish Council and Halton Parish Council were due to be heard first especially with many petitioners associating with them. So what happened?

Well I have to say we were there early, ready and raring to go. Even second time around it seemed a little bit daunting, and I am sure the heart rate was up. HS2 slowed the proceedings, firstly by announcing various items and then giving a HS2 noise teach in for the new members of the committee. By the time we got going the start time had already slipped by over an hour. One of the challenges we had, as all Wendover petitioners did, was the sheer volume of data that HS2 had released the previous Wednesday. It had meant that not only did we have a lot of reading to do but some of our slides for the Select Committee were already out of date as they were submitted before receiving HS2’s tome. One of the key areas we had to address was the HS2 sound mitigation proposal in lieu of a green tunnel extension. The technical detail was addressed by our sound expert followed by HS2’s expert and cross examinations.

That took some time and then we galloped through the rest of our presentation. I believe the whole team gave a great performance as did our barrister, James, who managed to ensure all the key points were brought out. The engagement with the select committee seemed good and they certainly gave us a good hearing.

The Select Committee had set a challenging schedule of petitions to be heard and you will not be surprised that it actually did not finish until 3 minutes past midnight – a tribute to the stamina of the Wendover petitioners and the Select committee. It was pleasing to hear that they laid on a bus to take people back to Wendover at the end of the hearing. The impression I received was that everyone had a good listening to by the committee, although there may have been a bit of frustration that not all slides were shown. Without doubt the committee heard about the concerns and issues facing Wendover. I think it is a great accolade to all those from Wendover who presented to the select committee. That they took the time to prepare, travel and present to the select committee in an awe-inspiring building was really good. It showed that the “individual” can have their say.

I think it should be noted that the Select Committee are going out of their way to be

fair, patiently listening to what they say and treating petitioners courteously. As I have said before, their performance has raised my regard for MPs. Well before they hear the last of the Wendover petitions they will know we want a bored tunnel through the AONB. Let’s hope they are listening and are empowered to act.

Following the fun I had on Monday I was there again on Tuesday with Andy Band, Ian Hanson and Peter Lockett (in name) and our hydrogeologist – David Johnson. Our theme was water. Following our presentation, which went well, the Select Committee were sufficiently concerned to ask the technical experts to meet and see what agreement could be reached and report back at 2.00pm.

HS2 were their typically arrogant selves but two key agreements were reached. First, the methodology used by our expert was accepted as correct and second, that there was a hydrological risk. We reported back and while HS2 talked down the risk and said they will be addressing this later in the process, we on the other hand explained what the potential size of the risk could be and asked that this be considered when they make their final determination on a Chiltern bored tunnel.

Finally, well done to those petitioners who have been heard – you have done us proud, and Good Luck to those still to be heard.

One interesting idea that came out of the July presentations is the idea that you could bore the whole tunnel from the south all the way through the AONB. Why is this different and good for Wendover? Well first, it means there would not have to be a huge construction camp to the north of Wendover, they just utilise the one to the south for longer. That takes away the traffic and dust concerns with the current proposal. Of course the actual boring of the tunnel will take slightly longer – 5 years, with a slightly faster rate 90/m a week compared to 80/m a week assumed by HS2. Now that appears to be quite realistic given they managed to bore 140/m a week on the channel tunnel going through chalk. The slightly longer bore time is offset by fitting out the tunnel from both ends simultaneously so that it only takes a year. The net result is the time period is the same and it should be a lot cheaper – saving 2 TBM’s and one large construction camp near Wendover.

Other areas in the Chilterns are also being heard, which should add weight to our ask

of the Select Committee. I will say the Select Committee presentations I have seen from Wendover have been very good. We need to continue giving them the personal aspects of what this project is doing to people. For those yet to appear - good luck.

Brian Thompson

HS2 = The Rape of the ChilternsThe HS2 Select Committee hearings resumed on Monday 7 September with three days of presentations by Petitioners from Wendover and surrounding villages in the Chilterns. The overwhelming theme throughout was the demand for the Select Committee to recommend a tunnel right through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to replace the present proposal of six miles of embankments and viaducts from South Heath to Wendover, which would devastate the area.

There were many vivid descriptions of the harm the present proposal would bring: unbearable noise and visual intrusion,

traffic chaos, damage to the local heritage, serious effect on health and many others. But by far the most dramatic was the description by one Petitioner of the present proposal as “the Rape of the Chilterns”. He justified this unexpected use of the word by referring to the dictionary definition of “rape” – “the violation and despoliation of the countryside”. He continued: “This is precisely what the present proposal does, it violates and despoils the Chilterns AONB”. He finished by directly addressing members of the Select Committee: “Gentlemen, do you want to go down in history as complicit in the Rape of the Chilterns?”

The Select Committee has the power to recommend changes to the present proposal to improve the situation for those adversely affected by the scheme. It is hard to imagine how Petitioners could have described any more plainly the devastation which HS2 would cause to the Chilterns.Antony Chapman , Wendover HS2 Action Group

Syrian Refugee CrisisThe images of the Syrian refugee crisis that we’ve seen on television and in our newspapers have captivated the nation and much of Europe. It is a humanitarian crisis that is unfolding on our doorstep and one which demands a concerted response from all of us.

Further to its appeal for equipment in September, St Mary’s Church, Wendover, has launched a public appeal through which Wendover residents can donate financially to support refugees across Europe and the Middle East. All money raised will be divided equally between the British Red Cross, Médecins sans Frontières and Christian Aid, each of which is working in different ways to relieve the plight of refugees. You can donate online under Gift Aid via the St Mary’s website at www.stmaryswendover.org.

Winter is coming – for many of us that means working out when to switch the central heating back on. For the hundreds of thousands of refugees without a home and

without a certain future, it literally means life or death. Please give generously and let’s show the world that Wendover cares.

Jump to it for PACE!25 years deserves a celebration at 10,000ft, or at least we think so.

On Saturday 24th and 31st October at Brackley in Northamptonshire, we are looking for people just like you to jump from a perfectly good airplane. You only need to look at the face of

recent PACE volunteer Jarek from London to see what a fabulous day he had up in the great blue yonder. Jarek said of his jump “When we left the plane, it was a feeling of total freedom; this is how birds must feel every day!”

A Tandem Skydive is the quickest and easiest way to experience the exhilaration of being in freefall. Strapped to a highly qualified instructor you will be jumping from 10,000 – 15,000ft falling at speeds of around 120mph before your parachute is deployed for you to enjoy the views as you float back to earth. No previous experience is necessary and it takes just one day to be trained and to make the jump!

Skydiving is considered an extreme sport, not something for the faint hearted, so it’s worthy of asking your friends and family to sponsor you to the tune of £400 (and hopefully much more). As the jumper you would contribute a £50 non-refundable deposit, securing your opportunity to “fly like a bird”! Contact the PACE fundraising team 01296 616973.

50 Great Walks in the Chilterns The Chiltern Society has produced a new walking book, 50 Great Walks in the Chilterns, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. The book comprises favourite walks from Society volunteers and includes circular walks of varying length split into three geographical areas throughout the entire Chilterns area from south Oxfordshire to north Hertfordshire.

Compiler Andrew Clark, who headed a team of volunteers to produce the book, said: “The Chiltern Society has been organising walks for nearly all of its 50 year existence so it was only appropriate that we should produce another walking book to mark our Golden Jubilee. We asked our members and volunteers to tell us their favourite walks in the Chilterns and this book is the result. The walks suit all occasions -there are family walks, pub walks, longer

distance walks and riverside walks - and all are on public rights of way or open access land. Each contains fascinating detail of the area you are walking through and they are illustrated with lovely photographs, many taken by the Society’s own photo group members. It has taken over one thousand hours of walking and research to finalise the book, but it has been a labour of love.”

The book comes 15 years after the Society established The Chiltern Way, a 130 mile long distance path, which has since had a number of extensions added to it. Society members are also part of the Ridgeway Partnership, helping to maintain and promote the Ridgeway long distance trail which runs through the Chilterns.

50 Great Walks in the Chilterns is available via the Chiltern Society website, www.chilternsociety.org and through local bookshops priced £14.95. The walks can also be downloaded via the viewranger website, www.viewranger.com.

Traces of MeTracy Kiss’s first ebook is called “Traces Of Me” because she believes that no matter what we go through in life, the ups and the downs, highs and lows, love and heartbreak, each experience and relationship makes us the person we are, and likewise we touch the lives of those we meet and leave behind a trace of ourselves. Tracy wrote the book to help and inspire others to understand that true beauty comes from within, and judging people based purely on appearances is a great shame.

Tracy says, “Nobody can work as hard for you as you can yourself, and if something is worth doing then it’s worth putting your all into it. If you’re looking for a book that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page then visit Amazon where my ebook ‘Traces Of Me’ by Tracy Kiss is just £1.99.”

Local Optometrist Pedals for PoundsIvan Cammack raises over £2000 for Optometry Giving SightLocal Optometrist Ivan Cammack has completed a mammoth cycling challenge recently, pedalling 174km (108.1 miles) to raise money for charity. Ivan, who owns eye care practices in Chinnor, Thame and Wendover, smashed his original target of £1250 and has so far raised over £2000 for Optometry Giving Sight. The money will go towards preventing blindness and impaired vision in countries where access to eye care is limited.

As part of a cycling team of six, Ivan completed

his challenge on Sunday 30 August, riding the entire 1st Stage route of the Tour de Yorkshire.

“Optometry Giving Sight is a fantastic charity that aims to help the millions of people around the world that are visually impaired simply because they cannot access an eye exam and a pair of glasses,” said Ivan from Ivan R. Cammack Optometrist. “We are lucky enough in this country to take the provision of eye care and good eyesight for granted but millions do not have that luxury. I am thrilled to have successfully completed what was an incredibly tough challenge and would like to thank all my sponsors for their support.”

The final fundraising total is yet to be announced and donations are still being collected at www.justgiving.com/Ivan-Cammack1.

Are You Good with Money? Have you got a few hours to spare each week? Lindengate is a new and growing charity and needs someone to help our Treasurer keep on top of the finances. We’re looking for a volunteer book-keeper to pay the bills, manage the invoicing and donations and deal with the “day-to-day” finances. Our expectations are that on average a day

The Chiltern Brewery & King’s HeadThe Chiltern Brewery, Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns’ oldest independent brewery, has reached the fantastic milestone of 35 years as a local family business. Founded by Richard and Lesley Jenkinson in 1980 when they decided to address the decline in the quality of British beer by starting their own brewery. Their founding principles of wholesome, natural beers using 100% British malt and hops live on today with their two sons, George and Tom Jenkinson, now in charge. The brewery has won many awards over the years which is testament to the high quality, expertise, innovation and a dedicated team. The brewery shop is well worth a visit, especially in the build up to Christmas where you can pick up your festive ale supplies, some unique foods (many made with their beer) and some excellent gift ideas.

Whilst the brewery is celebrating its 35th year, historical records for The King’s Head Inn (their brewery tap in Aylesbury) date back as far back as 1455! Henry VIII is said to have wooed Anne Boleyn in the master bedroom above the Great Hall in 1533. The King’s Head is now taking bookings for Christmas Lunch and whatever the size of your party you will be dining in the festively atmospheric and historic surroundings of either The Farmers’ Bar or The Gatehouse Chamber. Their delicious menu can be viewed online at www.chilternbrewery.co.uk/christmasmenu but do book early to avoid disappointment.

Beer at No2 Pound StreetWe love beer at No2 Pound Street! All types of beer! Did you know we sell beer? Yes, we sell beer. Great beer. Hooray for beer!

There has been a huge resurgence in brewing in this country over the last couple of years with breweries popping up all over the place (despite pubs closing all over the place, boo!). There seems to be a real interest in the flavours of beer, with the craft beer movement especially, really pushing the envelope (perhaps too far sometimes, extreme hoppiness and high alcohol levels anyone?). At No2 Pound Street, we carefully select (like we do with everything!) from the best craft breweries, concentrating on beers with real “drinkability”, often just picking out one or two from a brewery’s range (we can order others in). We believe that beer, like wine, is a beautiful thing but should be balanced and delicious. And let’s not forget local beer, with breweries like XT in Long Crendon, Haresfoot in Berkhamsted, Rebellion in Marlow and Tring in, er Tring,

along with many others, making better ales than ever before.

Of course, here at No2 Pound Street, you can enjoy the beers on-site (we’re open late every night except Sunday), as well as buying to take home, so you really can have the best of both worlds!

And then of course there is cheese. Beer and cheese. Cheese and beer. Yum. Drinking beer and eating cheese is one of life’s great pleasures, perhaps even better than drinking wine and eating cheese (bit controversial!). You can order a selection of six cheeses and try them all with your beer(s) of choice and go for the scientific approach? Or simply choose a big chunk of your favourite, some fresh chunky bread, delicious chutney and your favourite beer – the purist approach? Montgomery cheddar and XT#4 for me please – heaven!

Much like we do with our fun wine tastings, we can do the same with cheese and beer; a fun and delicious way to spend an evening. Get in touch to book yourselves in – 01296 585022 – [email protected].

Tres CorazonesFollowing on from the hugely successful Grand Opening of Tres Corazones in September, things have been in full swing at Wendover’s Tapas Bar.

Now Katrina and the team are gearing up to greet you with Feliz Navidad, Happy Christmas in Spanish.

Tapas means little plates so you can enjoy a little snack with a drink or order enough to make a banquet! All the dishes are authentically Spanish because they are prepared by the Ortiz brothers, Angel and Pablo.

There are great plans afoot for the Christmas Season including a 4 course feast - just ask! Menu suggestions include some delicious tapas to whet the appetite followed by their famous cochinillo - suckling pig - or a paella party with several versions to choose from. Speciality Spanish beers, wines and other beverages are on tap as well.

David LidingtonAs readers of Wendover News will know, the HS2 Committee agreed in July to extend the tunnel at South Heath and stated that they were ‘minded’ to require an extension to the Green Tunnel south of Wendover unless HS2 Ltd were able to come up with a compelling alternative programme of environmental mitigation.

Since then, I have met HS2 Ltd to hear what they had in mind in terms of an alternative package. I have continued to lobby DfT Ministers and members of the Committee and have kept in touch with Wendover and Halton Parish Councils and other local campaigners.

In broad terms, the case that HS2 Ltd put to me was as follows. An extended Green Tunnel would bring noise relief to St Mary’s Church, Wendover House School and a fair number of Wendover residents, but the construction phase would be messy and take longer than would be needed under current plans. They argued that since the extension would have to be above ground level, it would be visually intrusive once built. They said that their alternative package included raising the height of the proposed sound barriers alongside the route and installing barriers alongside the bypass to reduce the level of underlying, ambient noise. Their

argument was that while that package would not provide the same relief from noise as a Green Tunnel extension, it would be a significant improvement on current plans while avoiding the visual impact of a tunnel extension. They went on to say that they could add to the package various community improvements such as additional land for public parking.

I told them that I would keep an open mind about their ideas but that my default position would be to support the tunnel option unless they could persuade local people to prefer their alternative. I suggested that they produce noise maps and other materials to show how the two options compared, so that local people could ask questions and come to an informed view. I am disappointed that they have not yet done so.

I have also talked to residents of outlying areas of the parish like Wendover Dean and Nash Lee Lane about how to get improved mitigation and compensation for them.

As always, I am willing to advise individuals and businesses affected by HS2 in confidence about their particular case and to make representations on their behalf. Please email me at [email protected] if I can help.

Scruples of Wendover for the clinic’s 30th anniversary year

Wishing them continuing success with the Gentle Laser

Scruples is Wendover’s longest established hair and beauty salon and is conveniently located in the High Street, adjacent to a large car park. In May 1985, Yvonne joined Scruples as a self-employed therapist and rented a single room upstairs. Within two years Yvonne had taken over the entire first floor and had two therapists working with her. Ten years later, Mr. Cooper, the owner, retired and she took over the whole business. At this time her sister Beverley came on board to help with admin and at present her daughter Amy manages the salon making it a real family business. Scruples now employs a team of twenty one, which includes qualified stylists, beauty therapists, hairdressing apprentices and receptionists. In 2013, the salon was completely refurbished and now provides a very modern feel with light and spacious surroundings giving a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Scruples’ dedicated hair team, Amy N, Ami-Jo, Billie, Debbie, Sasha, Carrie, Ashleigh and Sarah-Jane, have chosen to work with Joico and Clynol as their professional brands. Joico is renowned for its luxury K-PAK intensive repair conditioning system and quality complementary home care treatments. Clynol provides an extensive range of beautiful colours and salon-exclusive care and styling products. Three of our stylists, Amy N, Ami-Jo and Billie have recently completed a training program with Balmain and luxury hair extensions are now available. Scruples hairdressing apprentices are Sophie, Leah and Kimberley.

Great Great Taste AwardsIt’s “ale” in a great day’s work at the annual food and drink ‘Oscars’ for The Chiltern Brewery.

Bottled beers from The Chiltern Brewery www.chilternbrewery.co.uk have won a total of 8 Gold Stars between them in an outstandingly successful year at the Great Taste Awards 2015, described by some as the Oscars of the food and drink world.

Three Hundreds Dark Old Ale 5.0% Vol. was the star of a packed show, winning a maximum 3 Gold Stars and narrowly taking the spotlight from Bodger’s Barley Wine 8.5% vol with 2 stars. Only 130 out of the 10,000 products entered are awarded 3 Gold Stars and just 597 attain 2 stars. A stellar supporting cast of Lord-Lieutenant’s Cream Porter 6.0% vol, Glad Tidings 4.6 vol and Battle of Britain Old Ale 5.0% vol won a highly creditable one Gold Star each.

From the very start the ethos at The Chiltern Brewery has been to brew natural,

wholesome beers using 100% British ingredients - the best Class A malt and hops with great provenance and to mirror age old brewing methods. 35 years on, The Chiltern Brewery remains the oldest independent brewery in Buckinghamshire

and the Chiltern Hills.

The extensive and varied range of bottled beers features fresh new vibrant branding by leading

design agency Dirty Design in Bristol, capturing the spirit and flavour of the rural splendour of the Chiltern Hills.

The beers are available online at www.chilternbrewery.co.uk, from the brewery shop in Terrick and at various independent outlets.

Welcome to Chiltern BrewniversityThroughout its 35 years, the Chiltern Brewery has been at the forefront of the revival of classic English ale styles flying the flag for proper, and revived, tasty British beer. Part of that passionate commitment to brewing involves attracting and training talented new people that the industry desperately needs.

Long time Chiltern Brewery employee Dave McGovern has been awarded a highly valued and well respected Diploma in Brewing Qualification from The Institute of Brewing & Distilling, a great and well deserved achievement which both he and Head Brewer Tom Jenkinson are absolutely thrilled about.

Dave, who has been working at the brewery now for 10 years, decided that he would love a qualification to reflect his commitment to his career in brewing, something which Directors George and Tom Jenkinson firmly encouraged him to

do. The course was split into 3 modules and to fit round his work Dave decided to do one module a year.

But Dave isn’t the only “graduate” at “Chiltern Brew-niversity”. New recruits Lloyd Ellis and Ben Collard, both from the local area, joined the brewery as apprentices this summer. Both are university graduates and have made a big commitment to a profession that needs a lot of training and hard work. “It’s wonderful to see these young lads make the decision that they want to be brewers and to acquire the age-old skills of brewing that were, at one time, in danger of dying out,” says Head Brewer Tom Jenkinson.

“We are an active local business investing in local people for the future and proud of that” says brother and Director George Jenkinson. “We would encourage all employers to follow this route and to see the pleasure and satisfaction that it brings to everyone involved.”

David PollardMy husband David died 3 months ago. It is only now that I have had the time and the courage to look through the many condolences cards and emails I received. There is a big pile from friends in Wendover and I am taking the liberty to use Wendover News to thank everyone for their love, concern and prayers. They are a great comfort. The money from all the gifts received instead of flowers amounted to over £850 which was sent to Tearfund, one of David’s favourite charities. The last Open House we ran mid-May raised another £700 which was sent to Advantage Africa. Mind boggling generosity!

Friends near and far are precious. From next year on, I will be able to have visitors. I hope to have lots of visitors from the UK!

Please clear up after your dog!!As a resident of Manor Road, I, like the majority of other residents, cut the grass verge in front of our property. I am sick of

having to clear the dog mess before cutting it. If I don’t check before starting, I run the risk of either walking in it or having to clear it off the mower after use. I thought it was an offence not to clear up after your dog, but when was the last time anyone was fined? Please, you know who you are. CLEAR IT UP. Thank you.

Church bells for the QueenMaybe you heard the bells ringing on the evening of 9 September? It was the day that the Queen became Britain’s longest-reigning Monarch and bells were rung across the country to mark the occasion. Wendover bell ringers took part in the celebration of this special milestone by ringing the bells of St Mary’s. Listen out for them again on Sunday mornings and other special occasions or better still, come and join our enthusiastic team of bell ringers! New members are always welcome and we’d be delighted to see you at our practice night, Tuesday 7.30 – 9pm.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers AssociationOn the whole this season has been a poor one for honey production; the hot dry July seemed to hold back a lot of the usual summer forage for the bees. The infestation of wasps this Autumn has been an issue as they have been robbing weaker honeybee colonies. All in all it has been an interesting but not outstanding honey year. All the same, this month there are several Honey Shows where our members compete. The Bucks County Beekeepers Association Honey Show will be held on 10 October at John Colet School. As well as the Show, the county AGM will be held plus there will be workshops and lectures covering such topics as Encaustic Art and Solitary Bees. Our AGM and Honey Show will be held on 21 October and finally the National Honey Show 29 - 31 October. Last year Bucks won the Smallholders Shield for the most points at the National Show. We are making best efforts to retain the Shield. For further information on these and other events please go to www.mbbka.org.uk.

Wendover Tennis and Squash ClubStarting on Friday 2 October we will be running a mixed tennis club night for all standards of play. Over the last couple of years our Mixed Pairs teams have done well in both the Winter and Summer leagues with successive promotions. September saw the start of the new membership year for our Squash section. The Club Squash and Racketball leagues continue to be popular. Details of all of our Club nights and coaching programme for both juniors and adults can be found at www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk.

Wendover Cricket Club...has been a club for 150 years. To mark this amazing feat, the club held a number of events on 4/5 September. It is a great achievement reaching 150 years and here’s hoping the club will be around for another 150!

At the end of the Kookaburra Mid Bucks League season, the 1st XI were joint Runners-Up in Division 1, whilst the 2nd XI finished 8th in Division 2.

The Whitchurch Morris Men – WassailWaes Hael. Drinc Hael. From the Anglo-Saxon tongue, meaning a toast of good health and the traditional reply. There is no single definition of what Wassailing is in all of its forms but is best described as a set of customs meant to bring good health and luck which is represented in the Wassail drink. A similar Norse blessing is Ves Heill or “be healthy” and in today’s language – Cheers!

So I can hear you say, it’s Morris and drinking again but in fact, there is no established connection other than that they are all part of our English social history. The Angles and Saxons came to Briton around 400AD and Danelaw was established around 800AD. Both came to an end in 1066AD. The first recorded Morris event was in 1137AD so it’s doubtful the Normans (French Vikings), brought Morris with them.

Whatever the origins of the Wassail, by medieval times, the symbolic toast and the drink itself was established and songs and

chants recorded the custom. It is rumoured that King John was assassinated with a poisoned bowl of ale. Henry IV is said to have survived two assassination attempts from poisoned Wassail bowls, the first in 1399 resulted in the deaths of the Earls of Exeter, Salisbury, Gloucester and Surrey and a second attempt in 1403 ended with less bloodletting. In 978AD King Edward the Martyr was murdered on the orders of his stepmother by being stabbed in the back whilst enjoying the Wassail Cup. There were some who claim that the mortal blow was actually struck by the stepmother herself.

The later custom has the Loving Cup passed from dancer to dancer and the person to the immediate left stands and turns their back to protect the recipient. I bet they didn’t teach you this at school!

We’ve started our practice nights so come and join in on Tuesdays at 8:15pm in Wilstone Village Hall and live real history. All you men and boys have to do is come along

and join us. You can contact us through our web address: www.whitchurchmorris.org.uk or just turn up. The 2015 Vale Tour is on Saturday 14 November.

23rd World Scout Jamboree in JapanFor the past two years 36 Scouts and Guides from Buckinghamshire and Anglia (including 4 from Wendover and Aston Clinton: Alex Wall, Adam Kellet, Nathan Gray and myself) have been meeting up once a month in preparation for a once in a lifetime trip to Japan. Activities included first aid training, walking, pioneering and learning to work as a team.

The whole trip was amazing and has made me realise how diverse our world actually is. I have made many friends which I will keep

for life and have learnt many valuable skills which I will carry with me throughout my life. I feel very privileged to have been able to go on this trip and would like to thank Buckinghamshire County Scouts for the support and funding, Aylesbury Vale District for their support with the fundraising and any members of the community who came along to one of my fundraising events.

I would thoroughly recommend applying to go on any Jamboree, especially the world ones, either as a participant or a volunteer. It will be an experience you will never forget.

RAF Halton Police and Security Flight played a huge part in the recent Station exercises conducted as part of the main Exercise FIVE ARROWS recently. The morning saw the reporting and reaction processes put to the test in an aircraft crash incident on the airfield. The Emergency Response Plan was followed by MPGS in calling out the necessary personnel to attend the incident. The cordon and Forward Control Point was immediately put in place by the MPGS whilst the RAF Police reacted by setting up an Incident Control Point.

The second half of the day saw the Police and Security Flight tested to the full with a Mass Casualty exercise. The scenario was based around a primitive attack at the exit gate involving a flight of marching airmen hit by a vehicle. The MPGS received the report and were first on the scene providing constant situation reports so that the right personnel were alerted to the incident. Upon arrival on scene, with Flt Lt Cotton, OC Police, as Bronze Commander, who took full control of the incident, triage was

carried out on all injured and passed on the Senior Medical Officer and Regional Medical Centre so that they could assist the local ambulance staff on arrival.

With a varied amount of experience on the Flight it was commented upon by the medical services about the professionalism of the RAF Police assessment of the scene. This is testament to the huge amount of training and experience undergone throughout the last 13 years in order to support operations abroad.

Flight Sergeant Dawn Bellingham from the Police Flight, said: “This was a busy day for the Station as the follow up work completed by Personnel Management Squadron continued long into the afternoon in regards to their casualty notification procedures. This is where we find our initial reaction and reporting of incidents is a key point in these processes. The requirement to collate accurate detail and preserve life and evidence puts the RAF Police at the core of the provision of Force Protection in the Royal Air Force.”

I am lucky enough to be taking part in the World Challenge with 11 other Sixth Form students from John Colet School. We are heading off to Zambia for 17 days in July/August 2016. We are very excited for this trip of a lifetime as well as feeling a little apprehensive about what is lined up for us!

What is World Challenge? It is an “education through exploration” project including expeditions for schools where students travel to a third world country and make a difference, conquer personal challenges - such as very long treks - and increase global awareness. The aim overall is for the students to immerse themselves into a world vastly different from their own, develop teamwork and leadership skills and gain confidence and self-esteem – all invaluable life skills.

How will we, the students, “make a difference”? In Zambia we will have 3 days with the local community. Mid-way through

we have a 52 mile trek planned along one of the largest rivers in Zambia the Luangwa. We will end the expedition with a safari trip which we are thrilled about, especially as it’s the final phase of the trip and a nice way to end the World Challenge journey.

The total cost of this trip is £2,955 – quite a lot! We are all doing individual fundraising and group fundraising, including bag-packing at Budgens in Wendover. With Christmas creeping up on us, we all have fundraising

schemes coming up for that magical time of the year. Please spare some change for your John Colet schoolchild for our fun events planned there and if you see any World Challenge students in Wendover over the next few months, please come and speak to us and donate in any way you can. Our email is [email protected]. follow us on Twitter @JCSWorldChall – thank you!

Wendover has recently lost one of its most remarkable residents, Anthony Christopher Lake, an unassuming and intelligent man with an immense regard for humanity. A caring man who enriched the lives of so many people.

Born in 1920, his early childhood was happy if unconventional. When he was 13 years old he attended what he described as “an unusual school with about 75 other pupils who came from many different countries” which no doubt helped him become so accepting of others. When he was 14, he visited Greece and Turkey, thereby kick starting a lifelong love of Greece. The trip also inspired him to present his own plans for solving the problems in the Balkans to the Turkish Ambassador’s Private Secretary. His first steps as a committed peacemaker. Christopher left school at 15 and went into farming, but was not happy. He was drawn by the Eastern Mediterranean and travelled across Europe to Turkey, only arriving back from his second trip the day before World War 2 was declared.

Already a committed Christian, Christopher was moving toward Quakerism so military service troubled him. Christopher could not be discharged during war so, with the help of Michael Tippett the composer, he absconded and was later court-martialled as a conscientious objector and served 3 months in prison.

In 1943 Christopher became Travelling Secretary of the Friends Peace Committee and soon after joined the League for Democracy in Greece. In 1944 he married his first wife Hazel, the mother of his daughters Eleni & Tina. Unfortunately so much travelling, attending the Peace Association, CND meetings, talking

with Greek & Turkish leaders for the Peace for Cyprus Committee, including Archbishop Makarios, put a great strain on family life and they were later divorced.

Christopher continued to actively support CND, the Peace Association and the League for Democracy in Greece. He became the Chairman of the Greek Relief Fund, founded in 1968 to assist the families of political prisoners during the military dictatorship in Greece, (67-74). He even secretly delivered pamphlets hidden in his Bible until he was turned back at the Yugoslav-Greek border as an undesirable alien. After Democracy was restored in Greece, he was lauded and received as an honoured guest by the Government.

He came to live in Wendover in 1970, and began attending the Quaker meetings in Aylesbury, where he met his soulmate, Leni. They married in 1977, but far from settling into a quiet, cosy retirement, Christopher’s activities increased. He became a very committed Quaker, involved in many Quaker projects. He worked at Kenneth Roberton’s music publishers in the Wendover windmill. A perfect occupation for a music lover who regularly enjoyed concerts at St Mary’s Church and Aylesbury Music Club.

Christopher had a lifelong interest in Genealogy and served as both Vice-President and President of the Bucks Family History Society. In 1981, he published “European Rulers 1060 - 1981: a cross referenced genealogy” and produced a beautiful family tree to celebrate Prince Charles’s marriage to Lady Diana Spencer. As well as his love of books, his intellectual interests also included the Workers Education Association and he

continued to give Greek lessons, notably to Professor Brian Woledge, then in his 90’s.

He was the National Trust Warden for Coombe Hill and joined the Chiltern and Wendover Societies. He not only walked but cleared and maintained many of our local footpaths. He loved to be out in the countryside “doing” and if there wasn’t anything needing his attention on the hills, he would ask his much younger neighbours if he could prune their fruit trees.

Christopher and Leni loved to travel, especially if they could combine it with their interest in humanity. During one trip they walked the Pilgrim routes of Spain, though Leni was concerned that Christopher, whose hair was thinning, didn’t get sun stroke or burn. Even in their late 70s they enjoyed a wonderful trip to Mount Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery.

Their cottage was always full of interesting and stimulating people from all walks of life. Christopher was Leni’ s devoted companion and carer as her health deteriorated which eventually brought about the move to Cherry Trees. There, friends continued to enjoy and cherish visits with this exceptional man who gave and inspired such love.

Christopher had such a long and rich life that it is impossible to encapsulate this singular man. Perhaps Chrissie Williams comes closest: “Christopher had the wonderful knack of establishing meaningful, loving friendships. His combination of listening, wit, good humour and engagement with the world were a very special mix.”

Peter James and his wife, Liz have lived in Wendover for 32 years. Their three children grew up here, attending the local schools, including Wendover Middle School (as it was then called) where, for fifteen years, Liz was a teacher.

Peter grew up in Retford in Nottinghamshire and attended the local grammar school before Leeds University, where he graduated in English Literature. He began his career with Marks and Spencer, before joining Mothercare in the early seventies. In 1984 he moved into marketing with Aspen Television, then to Terence Conran’s empire as chief executive of Conran Design Group. In 1988 he returned to Mothercare as chief executive of their UK and European operation.

Peter has been heavily involved in local activities both before and since his retirement. In 1980 he worked with local charities to found Aylesbury’s first Gateway Club for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities. In 1983 he spearheaded the fundraising campaign to raise money for the construction of Wendover’s much needed St Mary’s Centre and, for the last twenty years, he was secretary and treasurer of the Friends of St Mary’s Church. More recently he has become an active member of Wendover U3A and now runs a monthly discussion

group covering topics such as whether or not we should get rid of Trident, to issues surrounding the funding of faith schools.

Since retirement Peter and Liz spend much of their time travelling throughout Europe, with trips as far afield as southern Italy and the Arctic Circle. Meanwhile, Peter’s main pastime is writing, which he has continued since his university days. “For many years,” he says, “I just wrote short stories, with no thought of trying to get them published. Then I decided to have a go at a novel. It took five years, but when I finally produced ‘Deferral of Guilt’, I was persuaded by family and friends to send it to a publisher. To my

surprise, Macmillan rang me back within a week saying they were keen to publish, but could I commit to producing two more novels within eighteen months, preferably featuring the same characters? Unhappy at the prospect of being chained to my computer for that length of time, I declined.”

With that door closed, in 2012 Peter decided to self publish “Deferral of Guilt” on Amazon and was astonished to see it climb their top 100 charts to reach number one in both the Crime and General Fiction categories, outselling at one point even JK Rowling! Now, three years later he has launched his second novel, “Seeds of Doubt”. Says Peter, “I was lucky with ‘Deferral of Guilt’, in that I launched it just as Kindle sales were really taking off, so I am not expecting the same runaway success with ‘Seeds of Doubt’. But my main pleasure was in writing it. If the novel gives pleasure to others, that’s a bonus.”

“Seeds of Doubt” by James Parr (Peter’s pen name) is now available from Amazon, either as a paperback or as a Kindle download.

View from the ChairOnce again the last few weeks have seen huge efforts by the POP Group and Halton and Wendover Parish Councils preparing for their appearance at the HS2 Select Committee. Thanks are due to the Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce who provided excellent input for the business side of our presentation. More detail and analysis appears in Brian Thompson’s report on page 16.

Being the first to appear after the summer recess on Monday 7 September did have its advantages – one being that we could get a train back to Wendover at a sensible hour (the session finished at 12.03am!). Again it was great seeing so many familiar faces at the Hearing. Having returned home and watched proceedings at my leisure (parliamentlive.tv), I have to congratulate everyone who appeared. There were no boilerplate presentations – it was all from the heart!

I have to congratulate in particular those individuals who appeared on their own and gave passionate presentations. Many had to wait a long time and endure a coach journey in the early hours back to Wendover (provided generously by the SC). I’m convinced that the Select Committee is listening, and will continue to listen, to the people of Wendover. Let’s keep it going.

On other matters, we welcome Kevin O’Neill as a new Parish Councillor and are looking

forward to the Christmas Lights Switch On taking place on Friday 4 December. Great strides have been made on the WW1 Commemorative Quilt which will be completed by November ready for its launch around Remembrance day. The Manor Waste refurbishment will be starting in the New Year and we hope to complete by the end of March 2016. Finally, congratulations are due to the Wendover Society who celebrated their 50th birthday on Saturday 19 September.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

New Councillor - Kevin O’NeillService with the RAF brought my family and I to Wendover in 2002 and we have been here ever since! Now retired, I see co-option to the Parish Council as an opportunity to use my range of skills and experience to help support my fellow residents and give something back to the community that welcomed us so warmly.

Annual External AuditEach year the Parish Council sends its accounts and other financial information to an External Auditor appointed by the Audit Commission. This is called the “Annual Return”. We have just received our Certificate from the External Auditor (Mazars LLP) who have given us a clean bill of health. A copy of the Annual Return for the financial year ended 31 March 2015 can be found on our website - www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/council/transparency.

Charity Stalls for 2016At the Local Produce Market each month the Parish Council allocates one free stall to a local charity. It is time to apply for 2016. If you are interested please contact the Clock Tower. The only stipulation is that no food or drink is sold as it may take trade away from other stallholders. The Markets are held on the Manor Waste on the third Saturday each month from 9am to 1pm.

New Dog BinsThe Council is always trying to improve services in response to requests and ideas from members of the public. We will soon be installing two new dog waste bins following requests received from members of the public. After careful consideration we decided new bins near Perch Bridge on Halton Lane and near the new RAF Haddington play park on Princess Mary Gate were excellent suggestions and the new bins will be arriving soon.

Community Orchard Branching Out!The WW1 Memorial Orchard planted at Rope Walk Meadow (adjacent to Hampden Meadow) earlier this year is going from strength to strength. We have been keeping it fed and watered through the summer and the trees, many of which are rare local varieties, have survived well. We have lost

a few, but fewer than was forecast. An information board will be put up soon.
