Peace at Christmas? At this time of the year many of the advertisements on television focus on Christmas and the associated buying of gifts. Some of these adverts, particularly those for the major retailers, are mini-films!

This year is no exception and lots of us will have found our heart-strings being pulled by the penguin looking for love! However, without question the most heart wrenching of these short films is that which focuses on the 1914 ‘Christmas ceasefire’ which took place along parts of the Western Front during World War I. This advert ran the risk of using the bloodshed and huge loss of life for mere commercialism; however, created with the assistance of the Royal British Legion, it is very poignant and a continuing reminder, amid the tinsel and baubles, of the huge loss of life that the world has witnessed in the pursuit and defence of peace. At the end of the advert two soldiers, one German and one British, have seemingly exchanged gifts; they have shared with one another what they had, namely a bar of chocolate and a fleeting moment of peace.

In the midst of Advent, we will all be busying ourselves with preparations for Christmas, most notably, the buying of gifts for our loved ones. As we go about this I hope that we will offer a prayer for all those whose celebration of Christmas will be marked by warfare, conflict and violence. Let us also pray for those who will be far away from family and friends as they seek to establish peace. Finally, give thanks to God that He has shared the greatest gift of all, the gift of Jesus Christ

His Son, with the whole world.

My prayer for you is that the peace of which the angels sang at the Birth of Christ will be with you and your family this coming Christmas and throughout the New Year of the Lord 2015.

The select committee are continuing to hear petitions. We understand they hope to finish the northern half of the line by Christmas, having started at Birmingham. In the New Year they have a relatively short period of time before they have to stop for the General Election period. Consequently they are going to look at smaller self contained petitions/areas to hear during this period. Therefore the earliest Wendover petitions are likeliest to be heard is June 2015, and probably a bit later than that.

While that relieves the pressure on getting ready for appearing in front of the select committee we still need to make sure that we have the relevant evidence and facts. The POP (Petitioning Organisations Partnership) members have been working hard on various aspects of evidence.

An acoustician (noise expert) has been engaged to help us understand the impacts and help us frame our input to the select committee. A survey of businesses in Wendover will be undertaken to get a better idea of the impact of HS2 on local enterprises. BCC are undertaking some traffic modelling to better understand the impact of the increased HGV and LGV movements in Buckinghamshire. Once this is complete they will share it with the communities including

Wendover. A local volunteer is undertaking a report on the impacts of HS2 on the local heritage. In order to better understand the impact of HS2 on the local hydrology and assess if there is any risk to Wendover a hydrologist has also been engaged by WPC. A recent report on the mitigation of operational aspects of HS2 has recently been completed.

The evidence and documents that are collected will be held by the Parish Council on an information hub which will be available to all petitioners. Various documents and maps relating to HS2 and its impacts have already been deposited with them and as more documentation becomes available they will be held there. So as local petitioners start to gather information to support their petitions they should visit the hub. All you need to do is contact the Parish Clerk and give them your petition number in order to get access.

A recent BBC ‘Inside out’ investigated the health impacts of HS2 on the people living in the Chilterns. The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee are examining the economic case for HS2. This will continue through to December. It will be interesting to see what they have to say.

DECEMBER 1914Spasmodic fighting continued during December along the British-held sector of the Western Front with several German attacks on Ypres. The weather was foul - wet and cold - and many soldiers suffered from swollen feet, frost-bite and rheumatism. But on Christmas Eve the weather improved and set the scene for a truly remarkable event. Late in the evening of 24 December both sides, quite spontaneously, started to sing carols and Christmas trees appeared in the German trenches. Christmas Day was bright and frosty and neither the British nor the German troops opened fire. Then groups of soldiers moved into No Man’s Land and a sort of fraternisation took place. Gifts were swapped, pleasantries exchanged and photographs taken. For one brief period peace prevailed. The Christmas Truce was, however, short-lived and the British and German General Staffs issued strict orders that such unwarlike actions should stop immediately.

At least one Wendover soldier, Pte Charles Atkins serving with the Royal Berkshire Regiment, took part in the Christmas Truce. He wrote to his parents, Mr and Mrs Charles Atkins of London Road: “We had a very amusing time at Christmas. I expect you have seen in the papers that we were on top of the trenches, shaking hands and exchanging our bully beef for their bread! I can tell you, I shall not forget this Christmas, if I am lucky to come through it all right”. Pte Atkins also noted that he had received, as did all the British soldiers at the front, a Christmas present from Princess Mary containing “a pipe, tobacco and cigarettes in a very nice tin”. Charles Atkins did survive the war.

Back in Wendover, the Bucks Herald reported that, “ A board has been erected inside the

railings of the Literary I n s t i t u t e , facing the Town Clock, giving the names of the 110 men of the town who have joined the forces”. Cards, such as the one s h o w n on this page, were presented to the families of enlisted men who proudly d i s p l a y e d them in their cottage windows.

The Bucks Advertiser carried an article on the Christmas Services at St Mary’s Church: “The sharp frost on Christmas morning proved seasonable and quite in keeping with the picture of an old fashioned Christmas.

Notwithstanding the bright morning the day was certainly the quietist so far as outside rejoicings were concerned, that can be remembered. The bells were unable to be rung to usher in the happy day, and the band did not play the usual midnight carols or parade the town on Boxing Day. The [Halton Camp] soldiers were away on furlough and very few people were seen on the streets. On Christmas Eve the children, whose fathers had joined the forces and were away from home, were the recipients of seasonable gifts for the stocking which

“daddy could not fill” and were not forgotten by a few kind ladies and gentlemen who contributed to the fund , the gifts coming as a pleasant surprise to them. At St Mary’s Church at morning service the Rev C. C. Sharpe preached a helpful sermon to a large congregation from the text Philippians IV 7, “The Peace of God”. The Church was tastefully decorated with holly and ivy, and the following hymns were sung: “Christians Awake, Salute the Happy Morn”, “O Come all Ye Faithful”, “While Shepherds Watched”, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, and “ O God of Love, O King of Peace”. At the close a verse from the National Anthem was sung.

Not all news items were directly concerned with the war. On December 19 the Bucks Herald reported: “The general meeting of the Wendover and District Sparrow Club was held at the Red Lion Hotel when there were present Messrs C. T. Adams, Frank Purssell, T. Thorne, R.C. Saunders, W.J. Stevens, E. Dawe, S.W.Brown and C.E. Freeman (Sec). The Secretary reported that last season about 5,000 sparrows were killed in the neighbourhood, and that the Club was in a sound financial position. It was unanimously decided to continue to carry on the Club and pay 3s per hundred for sparrow heads. It is hoped that all farmers, small holders, and gardeners will join the Club.” Clearly, there was no Christmas Truce for sparrows.

Donation to Wendover Community CarIn October, Wing Cdr Jenny Holmes of RAF Halton presented a cheque for £600 to Jeremy Stevenson on behalf of the RAF Thrift Shop at Halton.

The Wendover Community Car operates a transport service for those who find it difficult to get about on public transport for such everyday activities as shopping, visiting friends or going to organised events such as Lunch Clubs etc. The Wendover Community Car is run by volunteers who each give up a few hours of their time each week to provide this service in return for a small donation to cover running costs.

In accepting the cheque Jeremy Stevenson said, “We are very grateful to the RAF once again for their generous support of the vital work carried out by the volunteers of Wendover Community Car in providing this vital service. At present we are very short of volunteer drivers and would be delighted to hear from anyone who feels that they can help. Our Co-ordinator can be contacted on 01296 317769.”

Help for People with a Hearing LossIf you or someone you know struggles to hear clearly, particularly in noisy situations, they would benefit from joining a lipreading class.Lipreading tutor Judy Perry, who has a hearing loss herself and wears two hearing aids, runs a class at Wendover Library Community Room on Friday afternoons.

Judy says “It’s very easy to misunderstand what someone is saying if you can’t hear them clearly. Lipreading helps to fill in the gaps in the conversation you can’t hear. Although one in six of the population has some degree of hearing loss, most people don’t know anyone else who is deaf and don’t know how to cope with it. Hearing aids help, but not much in noisy situations as they magnify all sounds, not just conversation.”

If you start to lose your hearing, Judy says the

Local Newsbest thing you can do is to join a lipreading class as soon as possible. As well as learning the basics of lipreading, the classes also provide information about local services and innovations in assistive equipment which can help, for example flashing doorbells and vibrating smoke alarms. Learners find it very helpful to meet others who share and understand the difficulties too.

Deafness isn’t a joke; it doesn’t mean we’re stupid or getting old. It’s an invisible disability. People who become deafened may withdraw from social situations due to the difficulties they experience and can become isolated. Lipreading classes can help people regain confidence they may have lost.

Judy makes one final point. “If someone with a hearing loss asks you to repeat something, don’t say ‘Oh it doesn’t matter’ as that makes us feel we don’t matter. Please repeat or rephrase it until we have understood.”

Development at CDRSChilterns Dog Rescue Society recently began development on new facilities at their site near St Leonards. Chairman David Lewis made the following statement on commencement of the work:

“Last year we were granted the planning permission we had worked so hard to achieve in order to redevelop the rescue centre. The next step was to put together a full specification of all the work required and send this out to various building companies with the capacity and experience to take on a project of this nature. A number of tenders were received and we then set about the process of having detailed discussion with a short list of our preferred contractors. We are delighted to announce that a contract has now been signed with Priory Gate Ltd. They are based in Dunstable and have worked on a number of similar sized projects including work at Whipsnade Zoo.

“Work commenced in earnest on Monday 20 October and construction will take approximately nine months to complete meaning that at the end of next summer we will have the purpose built facilities we have wanted for so long. We would like to express our sincere thanks

Swan NewsOur old male (sporting the orange leg ring) has been usurped by a younger, fitter male. He knew he was beaten, his “wife” has left him and he has now disappeared.

On Monday 3 November, I looked out of my window bright and early and a huge kerfuffle was happening on the canalside by the steps at Bankside. The two males were having a dreadful fight.

The week proceeded with the old pair being totally cowed and beaten, they skulked at the Wharf Road end. Periodically, the new family came and the new male wanted to attack again. The old pair kept escaping through the small gap by the weir into the cage. The male was a totally sorry sight, beaten and broken in spirit.

Towards the end of the week, the old pair were swimming towards The Wides. It was the FEMALE who was leading, very determined. The male was reluctantly following. When they were almost there, they stopped, pondered, and the male started swimming back up. The female followed him but only for a while, then stopped. Later on, I saw the old male FLY back in to the top of the canal but without his female. He stayed around a further day but then disappeared, I don’t know where. I was told the old female was consorting with the new family, but I’ve not seen that.

Sandy’s Trek to EdenWeston Turville resident Sandy Atfield celebrated her 60th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary by walking 300 miles for The Lymphoma Association. Sandy started at St Nicholas Parish Church, in Sutton, where she and Richard got married. She received the blessing of the Bishop of Croydon and a cheer from the congregation before setting off from Sutton to Surrey and then to The Eden Project in Cornwall. Both Sandy and Richard asked friends and family for donations to the charity instead of any anniversary or birthday presents, setting a target of £1,000 which they exceeded almost immediately!

This trek was in memory of Sandy’s brother, Malcolm, who unfortunately passed away 10 years ago. Sandy said that Malcolm “was a keen gardener and helped many church and other friends in Sutton care for their gardens. Malcolm always wanted to visit the Eden Project but sadly he became too ill to make that journey.” Sandy walked all 300 miles and raised over £4,500, more than four times her target.

Bucks UTCBuckinghamshire University Technical College (UTC) offers a new concept in education. It gives 14-19 year olds the opportunity to take a highly regarded, full time, technically-oriented course of study specialising in either Construction or IT. Responding to growing demands from the industry for well-educated, high calibre technicians, the College combines hand and mind to integrate national curriculum requirements with technical and practical elements.

Alongside the usual GCSE/A levels, students study technical qualifications supporting our IT and Construction specialism. At the end of their course, they are armed with a strong set of both academic and technical exam results, giving them an advantage over their peers as they step into work, or further education.

The UTC brings together major local employers like Taylor Wimpey, Cisco, Esri UK and McAfee in equal partnership. They helped form our curriculum and ensure our students gain valuable work-related learning to improve their employability within the Construction and IT sectors.

Through their technical skills learning, exposure to the industry and employers from day one, our young people are more used to and ready for the working world, than those in a usual school environment. They have an

excellent understanding of their specialism and the career opportunities available. Their employability skills are outstanding because they understand what is expected of them in the workplace as they’ve real experience of it.

We’d be delighted to meet anyone who might be interested in our unique offer. Please visit our website www.buckinghamshireutc.co.uk for details of our upcoming events, or call 01296 388688 to make an appointment. See ad page 9.

Caring for Local WoodlandsA team of super-fit volunteers spent a few hours on the 12 November at the popular and beautiful Hockeridge and Pancake Woods, situated between Ashley Green and Berkhamsted, opening-up and restoring a well-used ride to make access easier.

These woods are owned by the Royal Forestry Society (RFS). They were bequeathed to them in 1986 by Mary Wellesley, great grand-daughter of the Duke of Wellington. She rescued the woods from neglect in 1952 and helped create the wonderful woods you can see today.

The RFS want to work with local people and the Chiltern Society to help maintain the woods for future generations. The wood hosts a huge diversity of native and non-native trees, wildflowers, butterflies, badgers, stoats, deer

and birds, all of which add-up to a fantastic experience when you visit the woods.

The Chiltern Society is a local environmental charity with almost 7000 members based in Chesham.

This was the first work-party organised by the Chiltern Society in conjunction with the RFS. A mixture of highly experienced conservation volunteers from the Chiltern Society who were ably assisted by local volunteers. From these enthusiast individuals it is hoped to create a regular conservation group dedicated to looking after these two woods.

The work involved cutting back and coppicing self-seeded trees, removing bracken and bramble and generally tidying up the ride to encourage the movement of birds, insects and butterflies. Future work parties will carry out a range of conservation work ideally suited to people of all ages and levels of fitness.

All the volunteers enjoyed a well-earned cup of tea and slice of cake after an hour or so of hard but satisfying work and then carried on to finish the job!

If you’re a regular visitor to the wood, want to find out more or would like to join this group, contact the Chiltern Society’s volunteer co-ordinator, Geoff Wiggett on 01442 875906 or the Royal Forestry Society on 01295 678588.

Wendover Parish Council has invited many of the central Wendover retailers to stay open for Late Night Shopping, see map on page 21. There will be a Christmas Market on the Manor Waste AND in the car parks behind Lloyds Chemist and Budgens Supermarket, see map opposite.

This year’s Christmas market will feature delicious hot food and drinks as well as many craft, card and gift stalls, many new for 2014. This will be the perfect opportunity to buy some original presents without having to travel too far and in a truly joyous atmosphere. There may be shops open you have never visited before or market stalls offering hand-crafted items not usually available in the chain-stores. Browsing in an evening market atmosphere will only add to the experience and ehance your gift-giving experience.

The main beneficiary of the evening will be Rennie Grove Hospice Care. For more information, you can visit the Rennie Grove Hospice Charity Shop at 5 High Street, HP22 6DU or the website http://www.renniegrove.org. This charity has developed from Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and Grove House.

This year’s Christmas Market is developing into the biggest and best yet seen in Wendover. Don’t miss it - make sure you bring your friends!

SchoolsWendover CE Junior SchoolOfsted Our school was inspected in June 2014 and was judged to require improvement. Whilst the overall judgment was disappointing, the report contained many positives. The Ofsted team was clear that some of our practice was ‘as good as they had seen in any school.’ The report indicated a number of key areas that needed to be improved and we have been working tirelessly to ensure that Wendover CE Junior School is ready for our next inspection when we will be judged to be at least Good. What have we been doing? There have been a number of key changes in our school since the inspection: •We have a new behaviour system which

is based on rewarding positive behaviour and that encourages children to take responsibility for their actions;

•We are improving our teaching and learning so that the provision for each child is at least Good

•We are developing our middle leaders so that all staff are responsible for driving standards

•We are involving children and parents far more in our school improvement work: review of behaviour system, review of the curriculum and homework, review of the reporting system and a shared approach to positive behaviour management through our positive reward cards.

The in-year progress data from last year shows that most children made good progress in Reading, Writing and Maths. Data for our Year 6 pupils shows that, in the large majority of areas, their attainment was significantly higher than the national average. For all pupils, and groups of pupils, progress in reading was also significantly higher than the national average.

Our visit from Her Majesty’s Inspector (HMI)When a school is judged to require improvement they are supported by an HMI who visits the school to assess the improvement since the inspection and work with the leaders to ensure that rapid improvement is made. We were delighted to welcome Liz Farr, HMI, to Wendover Juniors just before the October half-term. She was

Seasonal fluCommon symptoms of flu are sudden high temperature, aching, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, runny nose and a dry cough. Flu is more severe than the common cold and can last for up to a week. There have been few cases so far this season, but the situation could change at any time especially if we get a prolonged spell of cold weather.

Healthy people with flu will usually get better on their own: antibiotics are not effective. It is important to rest at home and take plenty of fluids. Paracetamol or ibuprofen will help relieve flu symptoms.

You should contact us if any of the following apply:• Your symptoms have got much

worse, or you have developed other symptoms that are not typical of seasonal flu, such as breathlessness or

a rash. • Flu symptoms have lasted for longer

than a week. • You have a significant long-term

medical condition.

Flu vaccine is still available for those in the eligible groups who have not yet received it: please contact Reception.

Safe alcohol consumptionProtect your health over the holiday season by sticking to recommended limits for safe drinking.• Men should drink no more than 3-4

units of alcohol per day (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and women 2-3 units (equivalent to a 175 ml glass of wine).

• Have 2-3 days a week when you don’t drink alcohol at all.

• If you are driving don’t drink – even below the legal limit, reaction times are significantly slower.

very impressed with the changes that have taken place and with the collegiate approach to school improvement; she confirmed that we are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the recent section 5 inspection.

The main findings included:•You, your governors and senior leaders

have reacted promptly and purposefully to the inspection findings. The improvement plan has clear objectives linked to improvement priorities. All members of staff contribute well to improving the school quickly, feeling a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

•You have appropriately revised performance management systems. Leaders have successfully created a vibrant and dynamic ‘learning hub’ for all.

•The results at the end of 2014 show improvement, with pupils attaining well above average in reading, writing and mathematics. More pupils now achieve the highest levels, particularly in mathematics.

•A new behaviour system has been introduced which focuses more sharply on learning behaviour. All pupils are now expected to ‘stay green’ by demonstrating positive learning behaviour in lessons. Pupils know that ‘staying green’ includes listening carefully to instructions and starting tasks quickly.

• Governors provide useful support to school leaders and are equally ambitious about improving the school as quickly as possible.

Colet RemembranceYear 13 John Colet student Tom Hill took part in a unique Remembrance ceremony in London on Sunday 9 November. The event was part of a project created by the government of Flanders, taking soil from each of the British graveyards in Belgium to create a memorial garden to fallen, in London, linked to the poem by Rupert Brooke entitled ‘The Soldier’. Tom was one of only 60 British students to take part in this commemorative event and was incredibly proud to be involved in such an important and humbling ceremony.

Wendover Businesses showcase at WestminsterLike a lot of us, I use supermarkets but also shop at some of our many excellent local food businesses.

I’d noticed that MP colleagues from other parts of the country had run events at the Commons to promote their local food and drink and I thought it was time we did the same for Bucks. So I got together with John Bercow and Cheryl Gillan and asked local firms to take part in a Bucks Food Day at Westminster.

Three businesses from Wendover were among those who came. Rumsey’s is now a real village institution but I remember that it started off as a tiny family chocolate-making business, with no shop front or café. Number 2 Pound Street brought some of their scrumptious cheeses. Aylesbury Escargots, whose snail farm is just off Nash Lee Road, supplies snails to some of the top

restaurants in the country – who says we can’t beat the French at their own game?

Several hundred MPs, Peers and parliamentary staff visited the event. I know from the comments I got from colleagues that they were impressed and I hope to repeat the exercise at some stage in the future.

HS2 UpdateAs many residents know, Sir David Higgins, Chairman of HS2 Ltd, accepted my invitation to come to Wendover and meet some of the leading campaigners against the project. I took him to see London Road/Wendover Dean, Ellesborough Road, Bacombe Lane, St Mary’s and Nash Lee Lane so he could get a clear picture in his mind of how people living close to the route would be affected by building work and later operations.

The Committee on the Hybrid Bill is working its way south along the route from Birmingham. They have now begun hearing

Warwickshire petitions. Their practice is to visit each section of the route before hearing petitions.

So far, no date has been announced for any Buckinghamshire visits. It’s not yet clear whether the Committee will continue to work south or whether they will deal with the London section before coming to the Chilterns last. The Committee Chairman has told me that either option is possible. He has also said that while the Committee will probe the value for money of mitigation proposals, they are not tied to any maximum financial limit. If they are persuaded by our case for the tunnel, they can add it to the Bill.

I’ve published my response to the DfT’s latest compensation proposals on the HS2 page of my website www.davidlidington.com.

Macmillan Fundraising Total 2014!Following on from a very successful Auction at The Swan, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event held at my home in Little Kimble a

week later was yet again a fantastic morning’s fundraising. Over 70 people came along to enjoy the sunshine whilst having a cup of coffee or two, eating home made cake and catching up with friends. Some enjoyed a 20 minute manicure, or tried reflexology or acupuncture. There were stalls selling jewellery, cards & gifts, homemade jams and chutney’s. The raffle was as popular as ever, with many local businesses donating great prizes. This year’s Grand Total is an astonishing £7,146.00!

Thank you so much to everyone who gave their support and made it another record year’s fundraising!

Happy Christmas for Grandparents? As Christmas Day draws closer, a day on which very many grandparents are filled with joy, it is a very tearful time of year for so many grandparents both locally and nationally, who are denied contact with their grandchildren.

It is officially estimated by The Grandparents’ Association (a national registered charity), that at least 1 million grandchildren are denied contact with their grandparents and over 68,000 children are in the care system, many of whom are denied all or reasonable contact with their grandparents. Both of these statistics are growing year after year, hence so very many grandparents in the country are experiencing heartbreaking pain and loss. The members of The Grandparents’ Support Group for Aylesbury Vale help support each other during this extremely distressing time in their lives.

The Aylesbury based support group for grandparents’ denied contact with their grandchildren has been running for almost 4

years. Grandparents are denied contact as a result of divorce, family rifts, bereavements, ‘the care system’ or for absolutely no apparent reason at all. Consequently many grandparents are suffering great loss and pain every day of their lives. We would like to see grandchildren having the right to contact their grandparents (as long as it is safe to do so) but in the meantime our group offers information, support, advice and friendship in a confidential environment and helps grandparents to manage their loss as best they can.

We regularly invite guests to our group meetings such as Family Law Specialists, mediation lawyers and Family Therapists, amongst others all of whom have valuable input and help to increase awareness of our support group and this growing issue. We also have an in-house library of helpful support books, as well as help sheets on a variety of matters that relate to grandparents being denied contact with their grandchildren.

So, grandparents, if you are denied all or

Whitchurch Morris MenDespite the weather, the Vale Tour went well and a number of people did come out of their lovely warm homes to see us dance on the Manor Waste. There is an overhead shot of the massed dance on the Wendover News Facebook page. If you want to see any more, please look at the latest photographs on our website: www.whitchurchmorris.org.uk.

We would love to get more young men involved as we are all getting on a bit and some new blood would be a great way to move on into the future. If you have ever thought that it would be fun but are not sure - come along and talk to us. We really would like to see a young revival.

During the autumn and winter, the Whitchurch Morris Men meet every Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. at Wilstone Village Hall to practice and learn new dances (and how to fly!). If you’d like to join in or would like some more information, you can contact us at [email protected].

Volunteering for GirlguidingBrownies and Guides get up to all sorts of fun, and we want as many girls in the area to be able to join in as possible. We are making an appeal on behalf of all the units in the Wendover District (which covers Wendover, Aston Clinton, Weston Turville, Halton, and Stoke Mandeville).

Because of shortages of help in Brownies and especially in Guides, girls are staying in the earlier age group units for longer periods. This means that girls are delayed in moving each term and also that the waiting list for each unit grows, potentially causing girls to miss out altogether on the opportunity to join Guiding.

Please, if you, or anyone you know (female or male and over 18), can help at Brownies or Guides, register your availability at www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved.aspx. We don’t mind how often you can help, as long as we know when you will be there so we can plan. It will help everyone, in the long run, and may even help your own daughter.

RAF HaltonPlay Park ProjectWork has begun on the RAF Halton Play Park Project that will see the play parks at Tedder Road and Haddington Close completely refurbished and a brand new Multi-Use Games Area installed at the Haddington Close site.

The project will cost a total of £437,000 and has been financially supported by RAF Halton, the Armed Forces Community Covenant and Aylesbury Vale District Council. When complete it will ensure that RAF Halton will have excellent, safe and inclusive play areas at the busiest SFA sites at the Station.

The diggers rolled in on Monday 20 October to begin the demolition of the current play park at Tedder Road and the Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns, was on hand to inspect the plans for the coming weeks. Whilst on site the Station Commander said, “It is great that work has begun on the much needed refurbishment of our play parks. When complete, these new facilities will provide a state of the art play area to be

enjoyed by children of all ages, both military and civilian, improving our already strong ties with the local community.”

Work is expected to finish in December with the facilities ready to use by Christmas (weather dependent). The Tedder Road Play Park is being tackled first, followed by work at Haddington Close. If you have any questions regarding the project please contact Flight Lieutenant Eamonn Leacy on 01296 656470.

Halton Recruit Training Staff Raise Money for Royal British Legion Training staff at RAF Halton embarked on a 48 hour non-stop treadmill challenge in the station’s Findlay Gym to raise money for the Royal British Legion. They expected to cover at least 296 miles in that time, the equivalent distance from RAF Halton to Dunkirk.

Physical Training Instructor, Corporal Ryan Hepworth, who came up with the idea, said: “I wanted to contribute to the remembrance commemorations so chose the Royal British Legion over the wealth of other charities out there.”

Halton Apprentices Celebrate 70th Anniversary of the Great Escape The Annual Remembrance Service was held at St George’s Church, followed by a short Act of Remembrance at the Tribute to the Halton Apprentices in front of Kermode Hall at RAF Halton. The theme of this year’s Remembrance Service was The Great Escape and 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of this major event in RAF history, when 76 allied POWs made a daring escape from Stalag Luft 3, through one of three tunnels named

‘Harry’ which they had constructed in Hut 101. Most of the escapees were caught and subsequently shot on the orders of Adolph Hitler. Three ex Halton Apprentices who were among those shot after recapture were: Flt Lt Edgar Humphreys 25th Entry, Flt Lt William Grisman 23rd Entry and Flt Lt Thomas Leigh 32nd Entry.

VIP guests who attended the Halton Apprentice event were Air Commodore Charles Clarke, a former RAF Prisoner Of War who was imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3 in 1944 when the Great Escape took place. Now aged over 90 he is still the President of the POWs Association, and Air Vice-Marshal Nick Kurth CBE a former Halton Apprentice, who was the senior British representative in 2009 at the 65th anniversary of the Great Escape, and attended the commemorative event at Zagan in Poland where he laid a wreath for the three aforementioned ex Halton Apprentices. AVM Kurth addressed the Service, saying: “As we approach Remembrance Day on 11 November, our minds turn to the pain, the human conflict, the suffering and the loss

and moreover, we consider the sacrifices involved. Poignantly, this year marks 100 years following the outbreak of the First World War, often called ‘The Great War’. Losses endured by all involved were simply awful. However, we must not forget sacrifices in many wars since then. Indeed, the 13 year British campaign in Afghanistan has just finished with the loss of 453 lives.

“I should, however, like to focus on just one element of the Second World War – Stalag Luft 3 and the related Great Escape. But before I do, we must recognise that The Halton Apprentices have played their part in many many campaigns during the 20th and 21st Centuries. First a little about the camp: Stalag Luft 3 was a bleak, inhospitable camp built inside an edge of a sandy pine forest that stretched for 20 miles. Located near Zagan, formerly in Germany, it was 600 kms from Switzerland and 300 km from Baltic ports, run by Luftwaffe for allied airmen. In addition to being miles from anywhere it had a number of design features to prevent escape; buildings were raised to assist detection of tunnels,

and built on sandy soil so it was easy to see spoil from digging so the integrity of a tunnel was difficult to maintain. Lastly, seismograph microphones were installed around the perimeter of the camp.”

After the service, which included the Halton Apprentice hymn and prayer, the Apprentices were formed up by Station Warrant Officer George Mifsud, and marched to the Tribute to the sound of the Golden Oldie Pipe and Drum Band, where the Act of Remembrance took place led by The Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns. Next stop was Halton House for the reception where Air Commodore Clark was interviewed by local and national TV saying: “When we heard how many of the escapees had been shot it was an unbelievably bad day after all the hard work and hope, and at that stage the British Senior Officer decreed that there would be no more escaping. It was a very sad time but too many lives had been lost.”

RAF Halton Team Win Equestrian EventOn 29 September 2014 the RAF Halton

Equestrian Team won their first two rounds of the Inter-Station League (ISL), in their competitions against RAF Northolt and RAF High Wycombe at Hideaway Farm, Aylesbury. The ISL is an RAF-wide competition broken down into two geographical areas and the equestrian teams who are successful in the preliminary rounds will then compete in the finals and runners-up round in November 2014.

The winning team consisted of: Flt Lt Rosie Brooks, Cpl Heaton, Cpl Russell and Harriet Ditchburn. The competitions consist of a dressage test and a show jumping round where the marks are then combined to find the individual and team winners. All competitors had the added challenge of riding horses they had never ridden before for each phase of the competition.

RAF Halton Graduation ChangesThe RAF Halton Basic Recruit Graduation on the afternoon of 2 December will be the first time that RAF Reserves and RAF Regulars graduate on parade shoulder to shoulder. We wish all the graduates well in their Royal Air Force careers.

LindengateLindengate was delighted to announce its opening on Monday 17 November just 5 months after taking control of its 5-acre site. A full gardening programme is now operational. Application forms for both agents and self-referral are available on their website www.lindengate.org.uk. Lindengate is happy to talk with providers or potential gardeners to provide further information. Prices start at £25 for a half-day session. If you have any concerns about being able to pay, please talk to Lindengate about them on 020 8144 4291 or email [email protected].

The opening followed on from their successful Community Open Day on Saturday 15 November. This was an opportunity for local people to see the variety of projects available at The Old Allotment Site, adjacent to the Worlds End Garden Centre, HP22 6BD.

Lindengate is a Wendover-based charity dedicated to providing gardening/horticulture-based programmes to help those dealing with mental health issues on their road to recovery. They are doing this by creating an environment

that encourages a structured process of recovery where activities support them in becoming more self-confident and able to take those first steps towards recovery.

As a community project we are keen to involve as many local people as possible. Whether you are able to offer specific skills or just enthusiasm, anyone will be able to help us. It is the largest facility of this type in the Bucks area and can cater for up to 40 people per day.

Lindengate’s start-up has been made possible by many private donations and a great deal of hard work alongside some significant grants from AVDC, Heart of Bucks Community Foundation, the Paradigm Foundation, and Buckinghamshire County Council as part of the Prevention Matters programme.

Patricia Birchley, cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing at Buckinghamshire County Council is pleased to support a programme

specifically designed to help people with mental health issues. She said:

Local charitable groups are key to the success of our Prevention Matters programme, which brings health and social

care services together with the voluntary sector to support people who are finding it difficult to maintain their independence. The programme identifies community-based opportunities for activity and support that can address each person’s individual needs.

This was endorsed by Jane Gellatly who travels from the Oxford area to be involved:

I’ve been involved in this from the outset and it is so obviously beneficial to those with mental ill-health – working outdoors in a friendly and positive environment is great!

If you would like to support us or benefit from Lindengate please contact us, details above.

Do you need a Helping Hand?If you are looking for an alternative to residential care or extra support for those everyday tasks that are becoming difficult for you or a loved one – then we’re here to help - from 30 minutes per week to Live-in Care.

Dee Lucas

t: 01296 623560m: 07747 796200e: [email protected]/dee lucasDream*Believe*Achieve - Results!

Debbie Hekkink came to live in Wendover 10 years ago when her husband’s job moved to Hemel Hempstead and they didn’t want him to have a long commute. They moved down from the Midlands where most of Debbie’s family live, but Jurgen had left his family behind in the Netherlands.

Jurgen and Debbie met whilst back-packing in Australia. They got engaged and then married on their return. They first lived in Berlin for 4 years where Debbie was able to teach in a British military primary school and then at the Berlin British School when the military moved out. During their 3 years in the Netherlands, she also taught part-time in 2 international schools, in Rotterdam and The Hague.

They moved to the UK in April 2000 because it was difficult living in the Netherlands for Debbie with small children and no supportive network. They also didn’t want the children to start school in the Netherlands and then have to move to a different system in the UK. They had both grown up in small towns and wanted that environment for their own children. Jurgen was able to transfer to the UK with the company he was working for. Debbie and Jurgen fell in love with Wendover when they first visited. It’s such a pretty village tucked into the Chiltern hillside. They hoped to be moving into a welcoming community for the sake of their children, too - and so it proved

Their first home was on Halton Camp so their children attended Halton Community Combined School. They witnessed first-hand its transformation from a school in special measures to an outstanding

school under the leadership of Su Scrimshaw. Their children thrived there and loved the fact that they knew everyone because it was so small.

Wendover and Halton have provided them with what they needed as a family e.g. good schools, church, community, pubs and eating places, local shops and post-office. They are happy to drive out to larger shops and recreational activities.

It took a while to feel settled. They started to feel more a part of the community when they got more involved with life at St Mary’s Church and in the community. Both Debbie and Jurgen helped out with Junior Church and the Youth group. Debbie also volunteered in @stmary’s Fairtrade shop and worked for a while in the church office while the children were in primary school. Debbie still volunteers for a monthly slot in the shop on a Saturday, which she thoroughly enjoys.

Jurgen was also a governor at Halton School and Debbie supported the PTA. Once all three children were in Secondary School and Debbie had more time on her hands she wanted to do something more with her life. She saw an advert asking for volunteers in the local Children Centre run by Barnardos. She volunteered there for 18 months which then led to being offered a job. She now works 3 days a week in a Barnardos Children’s Centre in High Wycombe.

Debbie thinks that it took a good 4 years to feel settled and probably another 3 to feel embedded in Wendover, including moving to Grenville Avenue in 2009 into a house that was

big enough for their growing family and a dog too. She has discovered in her moves around the world that you have to make the effort to get involved and then be patient while you and your new community get to know each other, before you feel you are at home in a place.

Wendover Community was very supportive when Debbie first discovered a course at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. She completed a certificate in exploring Theology and Ministry, which gave her the opportunity to study more about the Christian Faith. She was kindly given a grant for books by the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust Fund. St Mary’s church also supported her with some of the cost of the three year part-time course.

This course has equipped her for her latest adventure: she has recently started as a volunteer lay chaplain in Wendover Junior School. This year she will be running a lunch-time club on a Monday, in which she aims to offer children a time to chill, chat and create. She provides games, books, a craft activity and the opportunity to talk.

She is also supporting Becky Murgatroyd, Wendover’s youth worker in running a self-esteem course at the John Colet School. Debbie can relate to not having much self-esteem while at school and is excited about the opportunity to support young people in this way.

Debbie and Jurgen have made a lot of really good friends in Wendover, and have found it to be a great place for raising their family.

View from the ChairSeason’s greetings to one and all.

The Christmas Lights switch on takes place on Wednesday 3 December. There are more details on pages 18-21. A lot of people have been involved with the organisation, special thanks to the PC events working group, Sarah and all the PC staff, everyone involved from Rennie Grove Hospice Care – especially Penny and Claire – and the IRGH Wendover Fundraising Group. As I said earlier a lot of people involved. I would encourage everyone to make the most of the Christmas Window Competition. We have many and varied local shops which have been attractively dressed and are well worth a look. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 3 December, not only the Lights Switch on but also Late Night Shopping.

Don’t miss Carols Round the Tree at 6.30pm on Friday 19 December. A perfect opportunity for us to gather as a community.

As we enter a new year which will include important events such as the General Election (and PC elections which are far more important!) we can reflect on a period where Parish activities have improved greatly. We have good staff, good councillors, a good structure and a positive plan for moving forward. If anyone in the Parish wishes to stand as a Councillor in the May elections now is the time to think about putting your hat in the ring. If you have not considered standing before please think about it seriously now, we need representation from the whole of the Village, ideally enough people to ensure an election – more than 13!

January MeetingAs the usual date for the monthly Parish Council Meeting is rather close to the Christmas Holidays the date has been changed to Tuesday 13 January at 8.00pm.

Works to the Clock Tower continueThe clock, made by Field and Sons of Aylesbury, was installed in 1870 and has been hand wound once a week since then, currently by our groundsman Andy! To reach the clock involves two ladders and very tight spaces which present a real safety risk. As part of the project to improve the Clock Tower we will be installing an auto-winding system.

You may not have noticed (unless you have been looking up recently), that we have replaced the leaded glass windows at the top of the Clock Tower. Having found broken panes and varied efforts to repair the windows over the years (some of the leading being ‘drawn on’ in pen!) we decided it was time to return the windows to their original condition. Each of the eight new leaded panes have been handcrafted and installed by Richard Collins Property Maintenance. We would like to thank Richard for his craftsmanship and dedication to his work, which has resulted in beautiful windows which will no doubt outlast most of us.

Audit of Accounts 2013/14The Council is happy to report a positive outcome to the annual external audit. A copy of the ‘Annual Return’ signed off by the auditor can be found under ‘Financial Information’ at www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/council/transparency/

Notice Boards and ‘Banners’Please be aware that if you or your organisation currently put banners on the railings at Ashbrook Park, there are new Council regulations which only permit banners for ‘not for profit’ events and for regular group activities in the park. Anyone wanting to put up a banner must contact the Parish Council to seek permission first. A copy of the regulations can be found at www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/advertisingashbrook/ The Council will be installing a new Public Notice Board at Ashbrook Park next to the Council Notice Board. This will give the community more opportunities to share information. The board will be protected from the weather but the public will be able to open the doors and add notices. We will also be refurbishing the notice board on Library Approach with a new ‘self-healing’ recycled material for the back of the board. The board will be out of commission for a short while but any relevant notices will be replaced once the work is finished.

Volunteer Drivers NeededThe Wendover Community Car takes up to six passengers so can help groups as well as individuals. The scheme urgently requires more volunteer drivers. To help please call 01296 317769.
