Unfortunately seven of the lambs born to these ewes have died in a savage dog attack Farmer Edward Mogford warns ldquoAlthough I caught the dog in the act of killing those sheep the CPS look unlikely to prosecute which reinforces my view that when this happens again and it is sure to we will shoot the dogrdquo

Manor Waste RefurbishmentThe work on refurbishing our Manor Waste has upset some members of our local community and so a petition has been raised This was developed by an online community and the easiest access is to go to wwwthepetitionsitecomen-gb975654584wendover-manor-waste-redevelopmentsign There are paper

A big part of spiritual living for me is kindness or taking loving action Most spiritual paths encourage being kind and kindness is an essential building block of our local and world communities regardless as to whether you have faith or no faith When we take loving action we are increasing the far-reaching arm of loving energy - benefiting us others and the world

When I talk about loving action I usually refer to my three main ones kindness forgiveness and gratitude And Irsquom not just talking about being kind and forgiving to other people Self-kindness and self-forgiveness are just as important

Itrsquos easy to feel weighed down by what seem like such negative things going on in the world We may not be able to help directly but we can help ourselves and our communities feel more love by taking just little steps towards more loving action

So go and make someone a cup of tea forgive that driver who cut you up look up and be thankful for the sky have a long and relaxing bath hug your children for an extra second smile at the next person you see and know that when you take loving action your inner-light cannot help but shine brighter

Thanks to the TrustA rather belated but huge official thank you to the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust from the Harrison family who lived in Wendover for 22 years

The Trust kindly provided grants to assist my children buying books for their uni courses Nicholas studied psychology and Amy environmental science The books were purchased from the local ldquoHarrisonsrdquo book shop

Some time after their dad John went through redundancy he started his own antique restorations and chair covering business The Trust helped him buy tools he needed to get started

Finally after being a nursery nurse all my life an article about ldquoa day in the life of a community play specialistrdquo inspired me to become one Not in a position to fund myself once more the Trust kindly stepped in and enabled me to do the yearrsquos course After 12 frac14 years as a play specialist on the childrenrsquos ward at Stoke Mandeville Hospital I have just retired It has been a privilege a joy and great fun working with the lovely children and their families

Nicholas and his family are living in New York where he works at the UN on climate change Amy and her family live in Bristol where she works as an Education Officer at the Architectural Centre

We are all most grateful for the help of the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust What a difference they made to our family Once more thank you from us all

Farewell and thanks from Parish ClerkAs the outgoing Clerk to Wendover Parish Council Irsquod like to say farewell to all the marvellous people I have worked with in Wendover over the last few years

This really is a very special village where that elusive stuff called lsquocommunity spiritrsquo is still to be found in abundance So many of you rightly take a great deal of pride in living in Wendover and lend your time to work with the Parish Council in order to keep it the desirable place to live work and visit that it is today I am sure there are many of you who donrsquot really know what services and facilities the Parish Council provides - and in some ways that is a good thing as it probably means it is doing a good job In my experience working in different Councils (Parish and County) Irsquove come to realise that contact from residents usually comes when things arenrsquot going quite so well

I have been quite touched by the number of you who have taken the time to wish me well for the future and have been so complimentary to me as well as understanding of my decision I feel happy in the knowledge that having recently been instrumental in the Council obtaining a pound213500 grant from AVDC for the works to the Manor Waste I will leave you having brought considerably more funding into the parish than it has cost to employ me

Murder Mystery ThanksI would like to thank everyone who came along to the Murder in Wendover event on March 5th in the Memorial Hall The Quaintwood Players performed their lsquoOff the Railsrsquo murder mystery play with great accomplishment and kept everyone guessing the identity of the murderer to the very end The help of a wonderful team of volunteers

Halton Tennis Centre (HTC) was honoured to be nominated for Club of the Year at the Annual LEAP Bucks and MK Sports Awards It was inspirational to be in a room full of worthy sports coaches clubs and volunteers The awards night had an Oscars-like feel with the three nominees for Club of the Year being introduced and the winnerrsquos name in a gold envelope

Halton Tennis Centre won the award and was recognised for providing a welcoming sociable safe and inclusive environment The club embraces people of all ages abilities and backgrounds It has a dedicated team of volunteers who support a highly professional team of coaches and administrators to help the club uniquely retain a village club atmosphere yet cater for both recreational players and international athletes alike

APRIL 1916In Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) the third attempt to raise the siege of Kut failed On 29 April 1916 the British forces under General Townshend surrendered to the Turks The siege had lasted 146 days 9000 British and Indian troops were taken prisoner The Irish rebellion against British rule ndash the Easter Rising ndash began on 24 April in Dublin By the end of the month the rebellion had ended and the Irish leaders were executed German battlecruisers bombarded Yarmouth and Lowestoft The Battle of Verdun continued with much bloodshed On the Western Front small scale attacks mining and shelling were endemic

Wendover rsquos f o r m e r p o s t m a n S e r g e a n t A r t h u r T r e a d w a y of the 7th B a t t a l i o n the Duke of C o r n w a l l rsquo s Light Infantry was reported missing on 11 April 1916

The Wendover Magazine of September 1916 recorded that after he was wounded near Ypres Arthur was moved to a dressing station which was then shelled and completely

destroyed The British and German Red Cross Societies searched hospitals in the area but there was no trace of Arthur In September the War office declared Arthur ldquomissing presumed deadrdquo Arthur who left behind a wife and four small children has no known grave

Arthur Treadway enlisted as a Regular soldier with the Duke of Cornwallrsquos in January 1896 claiming that he was aged 18 when in fact he was only 15 He spent seven years in the army mainly in India and then nine years as a Reservist After leaving the army Arthur became a postman initially in London and then in Wendover In September 1914 Arthur re-enlisted in his old Regiment and became a sergeant He was posted to France in March 1916 and had scarcely been in the Ypres area for a month before he was killed

The anonymous writer of the leading article in the April 1916 edition of the Wendover Magazine proposed that a committee should be formed to ensure that the prosperity enjoyed by Wendover since the beginning of the war should continue in peace time The writer noted that men who had earned 15 shillings a week before the war were now

earning three times that mount that the hotels were full all the small apartments were rented out that there was full employment and that tradesmen had increased their turnover enormously He advised that now was the time to plan Wendoverrsquos future as a health resort ldquoThe air on the hills is as pure as any sea-side resort and is free from fog and mists A few motor and cycle trips to places of interest and a small guide book would aid the prosperity of Wendoverrdquo He advised that houses should be roomy light and well-ventilated diet must include milk fat and fruit ldquoall abounding in the Vale of Aylesburyrdquo

In April 1916 the editor of the Parish Magazine Mr Black suggested that Wendover was now of sufficient importance that it should be an urban authority rather than a parish The Chairman of the Parish Council Mr H Wood said that ldquo he did not think that the present time was opportune to apply for such powers as it would certainly mean increased expenditurerdquo

Home From Home I am Kate Reed and I have just returned from a 3 month volunteer International Citizen Service (ICS) placement to India

It was only in the September 2015 edition of Wendover News that I was appealing for support to help raise the pound1500 to go I have now experienced this amazing opportunity and feel eager to share about my time

I stayed in a host home in a tribal village of Umardha in Madhya Pradesh I was warmly welcomed by my family and settled into the daily routine of a 530 start cleaning collecting water and cooking meals for the day

As my host family went to the nearby fields to start their full day of physical work I started my volunteer work We were working with

grassroots NGOs Pravah and Synergy Their aim was to tackle the conservative thinking that propelled gender discrimination tribal exclusion caste system and child bonded labour and trafficking Our job was to set up child and youth groups that would be open to start to challenge these norms

and create a space where their voices could be heard Easier said than done

Being the first volunteer group in our community our work was initially slow keenly trying to build relationships and establish our objectives but by the end we managed to create a strong youth group who helped organise an event in their village on equality which was attended by 300 people This event included a Street Play on gender discrimination created and performed by the group with for the first time girls from the community

finding the confidence to perform in public We also met regularly with a childrenrsquos group engaging in activities such as painting rights on stones and making a wall painting with a message challenging the caste system

Volunteers Required for the Station Theatrical SocietyHalton Amateur Theatrical Society HATS have just completed a successful year and are looking forward to another one with auditions starting soon for a drama in May and The Frog Prince Pantomime auditions starting in September to go to stage in the early new year Their last presentation the pantomime ldquoThe Wind In The Willowsrdquo was sold out every night with local Cub and Scout groups

The Club is looking to entice more members along to their Tuesday night sessions at the Theatre where they get together for a social The club also needs children between the ages of five and 18 When at the club they will be cared for by chaperones given refreshments and there are no rehearsals through the two weeks Christmas Break in December

The Club is very much a family oriented place with military children making up half

of the numbers There is a massive wardrobe selection mostly made by the members and for the last pantomime the make up was done by Aylesbury College trainees

Luka Waycott from the Station Photographic Section said ldquoThe place

is such a comfortable and friendly place to be that we donrsquot often have problems with nerves and the script can change from performance to performance with ad-libbing

Wendover Mens FCItrsquos not all about what we do on the pitch we are always working hard behind the scenes too Most recently our Chairman has attended a meeting at the MK Dons stadium as part of the FA Charter Standard forum to discuss ways to prevent the decline in Menrsquos adult football across Bucks amp Berks which naturally as a club is hugely important to usAs a club we love to get involved in the local community so this year you will find us doing our bit on the bar amp BBQ alongside our sister club the Wendover Sparrowhawks at this years Wendover Celebrates which is set to be bigger and more fun than ever

This month we have had a new appointment within the club Aden McLaughlin who has played for the club

for a number of years is stepping into the Reserve Team Manager role replacing Richard Cairnie The committee and club would like to say a big thank you to Rich for his time as Manager Aden is also this monthrsquos player of the month in recognition of his commitment and dedication to the club

On pitch news the First are through to the semi-finals of the Marsworth Senior Cup which will be played at Fairford Leys on Saturday 9 April

The entire match lasted over 4 days and our girls played continuously for a solid hour with no subs ndash which was definitely a challenge for their fitness The Sparrowhawks played a division 2 team from Kent ndash but despite the obvious gap in divisions they put up a brilliant fight initially matching the more experienced side goal for goal The match ended a respectable 41-31 to the opposition The girls played absolutely brilliantly ndash and even got a special mention from the umpire who said our wonderful goal keeper ldquogot more interceptions than some England playersrdquo

HS2 Focus GroupsIpsos MORI have been commissioned to carry out focus groups by HS2 Ltd On Thursday 10 March two such focus groups were hosted in the Red Lion One was for over 40s the other for under 40s Catherine Waterman from The Flower Gallery was in the latter group She was appalled at the lack of knowledge of HS2 by the rest of her group Here is some of what she wrote that night As I work on the High Street I hear a lot of stories about people who are directly affected and Irsquom not sure everyone truly knows how awful it can be for some people knowing that their homes incomes and lives become dependent on the company HS2 Ltd Itrsquos easy to talk about ldquopeople who are directly affectedrdquo but itrsquos actual heartache and depression that some people are experiencing

Irsquove left feeling quite sick I think there is a severe lack of information and my opinion of this company has worsened in the space of

two hours doing this focus group I hope my message gets to them Our fate MY fate is in their hands Irsquom proud to live and work in Wendover Irsquove been here all my life

Please continue to think about what HS2 will do to our community through construction and what kind of village it may have become when itrsquos finished

Think of the route it takes and the impact it will make on your life Where do you travel to work For leisure To take a walk To visit friends You wonrsquot be able to get across this construction easily

All I can think is the number of trains that this new northern part of the network is going to need and how every single one is going through the bottleneck at the bottom where Wendover sits

HS2ndash We are not giving up yetThe HS2 Select Committee reported back to Parliament on 22 February They have ignored our request for a fully bored tunnel to protect Wendover and the surrounding AONB despite the number of petitions and strength of our request

This is disappointing to say the very least Effectively they have refused to accept that the massive benefits of reducing the blight on our properties the scar on the Chilterns AONB the noise impact and the potential risks to the hydrogeology of the area that could be achieved simply by the construction of a fully bored tunnel This at minimal additional cost when compared with predicted overall cost of HS2

The Committeersquos derisory recomendations are (i) for a 100 metre extension of the so-called ldquogreen tunnelrdquo to the South of Wendover (ii) The erection of 6 metre noise barriers from the exit of the tunnel up to the proposed viaduct at Small Dene (iii) Further noise barriers to be erected beyond

the northern portal These noise barriers will further irrevocably degrade the landscape and the environment around Wendover They will become a target for graffiti

It is far from clear that these barriers (unproven as they are) will have the desired effect They are also situated at the base of a valley and so the sound contours will spread out further from the source

It is also worth remembering exactly what a ldquogreen tunnelrdquo comprises and how it will be constructed In fact it is not really a tunnel at all and involves digging out a massive cutting transporting and storing the spoil laying the tracks building the electric gantries putting a concrete lid on it and then covering the lid with the earth and rocks previously removed Once completed it will only protect the centre of Wendover from the noise generated by a train passing at some 225 mph but no-one can reliably predict the effect of a train at this speed entering and leaving the tunnel Also as part of the construction two new 60 metre

During the seven year construction phase Wendover could be subjected to up to 300 HGVs a day (at peak) along our approach roads (many of which are already at saturation point at peak times) The dust and filth that will drift over the town will make our gardens virtually uninhabitable during the summers There will be construction camps to the north and the south of Wendover All this disturbance and aggravation would be alleviated by a tunnel bored one way (ie from the South) which HS2 and the Select Committee have refused to consider

Having got this far we feel that we cannot just meekly accept this dismal outcome without a final appeal to the House of Lords whose Select Committee has yet to be appointed What this will mean is submitting petitions again employing some subject-experts and possibly a QC to present the Wendover case Whilst the

Lords cannot force a change in a Parliamentary Bill they can make strong representation (as they did with the recent Finance Bill) with so-called Transport Work Orders

For the Wendover Community to have an effective attempt at influencing their Lordships the following is required 1 Support for our fundraising campaign2 We would ask everyone to consider a petition to the House of Lords There is no need to appear in person as Role B agents can represent you We will be advising on this later The window for petitioning could start as soon as April 11 and only last for 2-3 weeks 3 Support and help to prepare the village and surroundings when the House of Lords Select Committee visits Wendover

Technology Tournament SuccessStudents celebrated a magnificent performance at the Rotary Club Technology Tournament on Friday 26 February where all four John Colet teams were victorious

The annual tournament organised by the Rotary Club of Chesham along with Rotary Clubs at Amersham and Great Missenden challenged teams to construct a bridge from card paper wood straws and cotton The bridge then had to hold the weight of a one kilogram vehicle and be raised to allow model ships to pass underneath Teams had to design their bridge and produce detailed drawings then construct their finished product ready for testing by a panel of judges all in a two hour timescale

The Coles family are sad to announce that Margaret Cecelia Coles passed away peacefully in Cherry Trees residential home on Christmas Eve 2015 aged 84Margaret was a remarkable woman who lived a remarkable life and brought love and joy to all who knew her She will be remembered as a wife (twice) a widow (twice) mother to 6 and grandmother to 13 At heart a natural communicator teacher and artist Margaret was a beautiful intelligent wise unconventional independent creative colourful free-spirited and resilient woman who experienced more than her fair share of ups and downs If life can be likened to a rollercoaster then Margaretrsquos life was a proper ldquoBig Dipperrdquo with the very highest of highs and the lowest of lows

Margaretrsquos formative years were in West London Born in Gunnersbury in September 1931 Margaret Cecelia Butler was the youngest member in a complex family structure with a brother a half-sister and brother and two step-sisters After school she worked as a secretary to the Board of Directors at J Lyons in Hammersmith before enrolling for teacher training at Digby Stuart College in Roehampton A reference from the Principal reads ldquoArt is her Special Field of Study and Margaret has done some interesting work in this subjecthellip She will be a valuable member of staff and a good influence in a schoolrdquo Indeed she was - as an Infant Teacher at Sheringdale School in Southfields between 1953 and 1957 In April 1957 Margaret married Edward Coles in Chiswick and it was not long before her life took a different direction as a very full-time mother Ted and Margaret moved out of London to Wendover in 1959 with two young children Family life was hectic and a further four children arrived with all six under the age of ten at one point

Margaretrsquos busy but relatively normal existence crashed to an end with the death of Ted in 1972

As her family grew up in the 1970s and 80s the home in Manor Crescent was the scene of many teenage gatherings Margaret had her own particular means of bringing these events to a close ndash usually by hoovering around the various bodies dozing on the lounge floor followed by a big fry up to send people on their way at dawn Margaret had great inner strength and brought up her six children by herself She saw them off to University move away and settle down develop careers produce grandchildren and move through their own lives

Having lived in Wendover for well over 50 years Margaret became a very well-known and well-loved member of the wider village community

Try as you might some of you may not be able to forget her involvement in the more social activities of the local sports clubs - dancing on the tables at a Football Club lsquodorsquo at the Spinning Wheel or serving white onion sauce sandwiches to the Aylesbury West Indians cricket side Several generations of school children will remember her as a supply teacher who helped them to learn to read Margaretrsquos underlying passion and talent however was art At one time a very active member of Wendover Art Club her enthusiasm ebbed and flowed over the years but was reinvigorated by a printing course in later life at Amersham College Her abilities were recognised in 1993 when one of her works was exhibited by the British Society of Women Artists in Central Hall Westminster Her output came in explosive bursts and the resultant portfolio of work whilst sometimes a little hard for others to interpret and for her to share is absolutely amazing in its talent breadth and depth ndash

a wide variety of media and subject matter ndash trees abstract religious cityscapes Her ability to appreciate and discuss art remained with her until the end

Many years ago a rumour of Margaretrsquos death spread around the village prematurely and she survived a multitude of health challenges in her long and eventful life Her greatest fight was against cycles of what is now known as bi-polar disorder with long

episodes of extreme highs and lows The family are very grateful to all who got Margaret through her darkest days and learned to accept the extraordinarily creative outbursts and sometimes outrageous

energy of her highs In memory of Margaret donations were given to help the work of MIND ndash the mental health charity justgivingcomremember245232Margaret-Coles

Mauve and white tulips were chosen for her funeral at St Annersquos - in memory of Edward too as the garden at Manor Crescent came into bloom each spring with bulbs carefully brought back from his business trips to Amsterdam Mauve and white because they were colours Margaret so suited and so often wore But what clinched it for the family was when Pippa the florist said ldquothe trouble with tulips is that once in water or oasis they can behave lsquooutrageouslyrsquordquo Just perfect then

Margaret was laid to rest in St Maryrsquos where she is reunited in a grave with Ted The Order of Service at her funeral included her own water colour of this final resting place which she called ldquoJourneyrsquos Endrdquo In time the family will exhibit Margaretrsquos art work ndash please do come and share in this wonderful legacy

Jackie Buggey was a wartime baby born in Clay Lane in November 1943 Her earliest memory is before she went to school dragging wood across the fields which are now the main school campus in Wendover She remembers climbing on the back of Charlie Spittalrsquos horse and cart with other local children mostly from Clay Lane to ride down Wharf Road towards the farm buildings in The Pennings now converted into dwellings

When it was time for Jackie to start school she went to a new prefab building along Heron Path outside the main campus of Wendover School near the Clock Tower with Mr Edgington as Headmaster That school has now been turned into houses and the prefab which for many years was the Headquarters of the Venture Scouts is now but a ruin Jackiersquos family including her parents an aunt and uncle and her two sisters were thrilled to move to a new 4 bedroomed house in Woollerton Crescent Jackie was in the first intake at John Colet School with Mr Crick as headmaster She founded a dynasty as both her children attended JCS and her grandchildren Holly and Jack are there now

Nearly all Colet pupils left school at 15 in those days and along with many of the girls she found shop work in Wendover starting at Mr Rennrsquos toys and fine china shop where

the Post Office shop is now In the late 1950s the High Street was full of individually owned shops including Woodwards the Chemist where Christopher Pallet and The Barbershop are now Wheelerrsquos Grocery occupied what is now Agora and the Post Office That part of the High Street also had a wet fish shop and Webbrsquos fruiterer plus International Stores Major Allbrook landlord of the Red Lion lived with his family in what is now Hamnett Hayward There were two pubs - The Swan and The Two Brewers then a cottage with two sets of steps up and the bank - Smithrsquos Bank (Lord of the Manor) before it was absorbed into the NatWest

The Manor Waste offered Sargeantrsquos Chemists Friar Tuck Restaurant and Alex amp Co a TV shop In Pound Street were Nicholls Stores and the Anne Boleyn Bakery Starting again at the bottom of the High Street were Hampshires the Ironmonger and Hardware store Danielrsquos paper shop Ivattrsquos shoe shop Where Brown amp Merry is now was a private house Next to the Red Lion were greengrocers and Smith the butcher Hogarth House was another greengrocers next to a bank and allotments before the Kingrsquos Head pub Then a linen clothes and haberdashery shop Bellrsquos Antiques at Wendover was the Post Office then private houses Godwinrsquos the newsagent and Burkersquos Jewellery

The local girls had plenty of boys to choose from extras supplied by RAF Halton and in 1962 Jackie met Victor Sambucci from Brighton who was a chef at RAF Halton They married in 1964 and soon moved into a small cottage in Clay Lane now replaced by The Maples Richard was born in the RAF Hospital in 1969 and Kim in 1971 Jackie was able to return to work part-time as Victor had moved into civilian work so he could look after the children on Saturdays and they moved to a 3-bedroom house in Tring Road in 1972 then downsized to Vinetrees in 2005

By now Jackie was working part-time at the Chemistrsquos with her Clay Lane childhood friend

Jenny and stayed 17 years She saw a notice in 1988 for receptionist at an optometristrsquos opening a branch in Wendover and that is when she first met Ivan Cammack She has

been with the company since they started in Holly Court and is now on the High Street During that time she has moved with the new technology and become computer literate Jackie loves her work and has no plans yet to retire

View from the ChairWork is well under way on the modernisation and upgrade of the Manor Waste Not only is the surface being re-laid to make walking and mobility safer but services are being incorporated to allow for the needs of Market traders and others who use the Manor Waste

Planning started a number of years ago and consultation with the Wendover Community was undertaken to ensure the design was sympathetic to users of all ages Plans and designs were presented at the last four Annual Parish meetings and a survey available in the Clock Tower for 6 weeks was undertaken to gauge the views of market traders users of the Manor Waste local shopkeepers and the community in general The survey was undertaken manually we spoke to many more people than those who actually wanted to take part and through Survey Monkey with a link promoted in Wendover News Local organisations such as the Wendover Society were made aware Although a petition has been drawn up since work began comparisons cannot be drawn between surveys and petitions

I will not comment or respond to posts on Facebook other than to say it has prompted me to confirm what an incredible job our Parish Councillors do for Wendover day in and day out Parish Councillors are elected unpaid volunteers Our meetings are well publicised and open to the public who can put forward any view they wish Our minutes are well publicised too I have agreed to meet with the lady who set up the petition to discuss ways in

which the Parish Council may develop its consultation and engagement methods

It is with great sadness I must tell you Gary Thorne died recently Gary was a popular local man and was the mastermind behind many things that just seemed to happen in Wendover He served on the Parish Council and just got involved with doing things be it footpath maintenance or anything else that needed doing A few years ago Gary was an ardent member of the Chairmanrsquos Snow Patrol He was also the power behind the team that volunteered to clean up the New Years Eve mess at 6am on New Yearrsquos Day He was a real star and will be missed by a lot of people The attendance at Garyrsquos funeral was testament to how well he was liked loved and respected Our condolences and thanks go to his family especially Toni and his son Elliot

Hampden PondIf you were wandering past the Hampden Pond in early March you may have witnessed our intrepid contractors working on pond improvements The Wendover Parish Council commissioned a report on the pond back in 2013 and are using that report as a blueprint for improvements that will benefit anglers and make the area a haven for wild creatures

Current works include the refurbishment of 7 fishing pegs the clearance of some water lilies undergrowth and overhanging branches from the swims and the replacement of two benches This should address some of the issues that fishermen have drawn to our attention and improve the pond side views and access for everyone Future works will enhance biodiversity by introducing reed beds and some new bank side planting

Clean for the QueenThe Queenrsquos 90th birthday will be celebrated on 21 April There has been a countrywide lsquoClean for the Queenrsquo during March We are asking everyone in Wendover residents and businesses to join in the clean-up effort and tidy the back and front of properties including the grass verges etc An ideal opportunity to spruce up Wendover and celebrate the Queenrsquos birthday
