November 1915The cold winter weather set in on the Western Front and large scale offensives were abandoned. Even so, trench raids and other minor operations were encouraged and the casualties continued to mount. In the Balkans the German, Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian forces inflicted heavy losses on the Serbian army and Serbia fell. The fourth battle of the Isonzo started in Italy. In Britain, voluntary enlistment was failing to keep pace with army requirements. A scheme was introduced by

Lord Derby, the Director of Recruitment, whereby men between the ages of 18 to 41 were asked to state their willingness to serve. They would be called up in s u c c e s s i o n , single men first and older married men last. The scheme,

administered by local “influential and tactful men”, collapsed when it became clear that half the single men had failed to register. It was the failure of the Derby scheme that made conscription inevitable in January 1916.

In Wendover, Thomas Carter, who had served in the Boer War and was the local blacksmith, was one of the “Influential and tactful men” appointed to oversee the Derby scheme in the village. It was his job to record the population of the parish, establish the number of eligible men and encourage those who had not yet enlisted to register. The effect of the Derby scheme was, at least, to prompt a further influx of volunteers. Nine Wendover men enlisted together in November 1915. They varied in age between 15 and 45 and they came from families who, for generations, had been involved in the preparation and distribution of hay. They were known as the “Hay Tiers”. There was a desperate need for fodder for the horses in France and the nine men joined the Forage Department of the Army Service Corps. They were to serve only in Britain. A uniform was provided, but they were obliged to pay up to three shillings a week for it. The younger members of the group were allowed to be with the Forage Department for one year or until they became eligible for normal enlistment.

In November, normal Parish affairs continued. The Parish Council received a letter from the Vicar requesting three shillings per month rent for the use of rooms. The Council asked that the sum should be three shillings with light and

fire and, without them, two shillings. Counsellor Tarry thought that the Council should find somewhere else to meet, but when Counsellor Hubbard asked him if he knew of another room he had to admit that he did not. After a few weeks of discussion, it was agreed in December that the Parish Council should pay three shillings in winter and two in summer.Mike Senior & Val Moir

Wendover petitioners are still being heard and the hearings will spill into November. It is possible we may not hear what the Select Committee are going to do for Wendover before the end of the year. Good luck to those still to appear.

One of the subjects being discussed is the idea of a Wendover-only tunnel. This is being promoted by The Wendover Society who believes a Chiltern AONB long tunnel option is a non-starter given that the Select Committee were not convinced in July. Therefore they have been looking at a draft option by HS2 for a 3995m tunnel as the basis of their proposal. The northern portal of this option is actually 50m closer to Wendover (at chainage 55.000) than the current HS2 plans for the cut and cover “green tunnel” and finishes at the dip in the ground by Durham farm. The Wendover Society recognises that a tunnel portal moving closer to Wendover would not be popular, making the position worse on the north side of Wendover. They have therefore proposed that the portal could be up to 500m further north, thus protecting that side of the town, although they have not defined just where it should be or the minimum distance it should be from the town.

The challenge facing them is twofold. Firstly, like all the other tunnel promoters they believe that the costs as supplied by HS2 Ltd. are over-stated. At £267M (HS2 figure) for a bored tunnel it is not cheap and if the tunnel is being extended to the north by say 500m to protect the town, that will add to the cost. Now it could be shorter to save money but that means it would have to emerge into a cutting somewhere along the line and possibly change the cost dynamics.

Secondly, at the moment, the lack of definition is a risk. The Select Committee may consider it too nebulous – more conceptual rather than a serious proposal requiring a decision. Or they may chose to pursue it but using the more definitive HS2 proposal which does not help the north side of the town. This is probably why the Wendover Society is looking to get some engineering input.

If the Wendover Society team achieves a tunnel for Wendover with the right portal location in the north that will be a great result. Another proposal which is evolving is the idea of boring a tunnel from the south only (rather than starting at both ends). At its simplest this proposal is for the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM’s) which will bore through to South Heath to just keep going. There would be a need to increase the boring rate from the 80m a week used by HS2 Ltd. to 90m which actually is still lower than the recognised benchmarks. This idea would take longer to bore than the current proposal but the time could be recovered by fitting out the tunnel from both ends. By doing this the programme schedule would not be impacted. The beauty of this is that the incremental bored tunnel would only incur the ‘marginal costs’ and thus be much cheaper. Latest indications are it will cost an extra £215M to have a tunnel which goes through the AONB and protects Wendover. Another advantage is that you do not need a large construction camp near Wendover for the tunnel boring work.

The challenges for this approach will be to convince the Select Committee that the TBM’s can bore a tunnel 24Km long

without needing major maintenance. The argument over boring rates will also have to be won. Both approaches face the major challenge of either getting HS2 Ltd to admit they are wrong or the Select Committee to tell HS2 to just do it – give us a tunnel.

HS2 Ltd is holding an information event from 11.00 to 4.00 on 7 November at the Memorial Hall. So please turn up and ask them awkward questions such as:• what are they doing to protect the springs

around Wendover• why do their tunnel boring machines go

so slowly – with the channel tunnel they reached 140m a week v 80m used by HS2 (and being the wrong sort of chalk is only part of the answer).

Brian Thompson

HS2 Ltd say we will be able to “talk to experts about engineering, construction, property, the environment and more; see maps and plans of the project, and ask questions and explore the proposals in more detail” at their information event on 7 November.

Wendover HS2 Action Group will be present outside this event – regardless of the weather! Come and talk to us before you go in. We will tell you exactly what HS2 Ltd’s present proposals are, and why we think they are unacceptable for Wendover. Then tell us what you think after you come out.

We will have presented our case to the Parliamentary Select Committee earlier that week, on Monday 2 November. We will tell you what we said, and why we think a long tunnel the length of the Chilterns is the only answer.

We are privileged to be able to have our homes in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but one that is facing many and increasing challenges, from pressures for housing developments, from traffic, from increased leisure pursuits, from ever more complex infrastructures and communications...all of which represent a potential threat to a countryside that we all love so much.

There is a great need to protect the natural and in some cases fragile beauty of this countryside, not just for ourselves but also for future generations. This is where the Chiltern Society comes in, in particular the Society’s Planning Group and its teams of volunteer Planning Field Officers (PFOs) who scrutinise planning applications in their local area of, in our case, South Oxfordshire.

We are looking for volunteers...of any age, from any walk of life, whether retired or working, but with one thing in

common: a concern for the Chilterns AONB, a desire to protect and preserve it – and a willingness to devote a small amount of your time to this important and very rewarding task.

If you like working in a team, if you want to make a contribution and if you want to hear more about what being a PFO entails, please get in touch with Peter Willis-Fleming on 01491 641536 or email [email protected].

Little Acorns Kindergarten CelebratesLittle Acorns Kindergarten in Wendover celebrated 25 years in September 2015 and

would like to send a huge “Thank You” to families and staff who have supported us over the years. To celebrate we held a Teddy Bears Picnic on Sunday 19 July. Families past and present joined us for a balloon race, face painting, singing with Penny Lowe, Jelly Babies...and lots more! The winning balloon travelled 98 miles!

We also held a Black and Bling evening Saturday 12 September. Over 100 people joined us for an evening of dancing with local band, The Numbers. Some LAK ladies put together a dance routine, with the help of Amy Russell, to “Cheerleader”. They brought the house down and did an encore performance at the request of the audience.

NK Builders of Wendover sponsored the event and Dayla provided the bar and a raffle prize. Other fantastic raffle prizes included, The Point, Tres Corazones and The Dandy Kid in Wendover, The Woolpack in Stoke Mandeville and Bills of Berkhamsted.

Little Acorns Kindergarten continues to be a popular and thriving pre-school and runs from a purpose built building on the John Colet School Campus in Wendover. For many children, starting pre-school is the first big step towards independence. You therefore would want your child to be in the best possible setting to achieve this. By choosing Little Acorns, you can be assured of a happy, stimulating and safe environment for your child.

Saturday 19 September was a real success with about 60 people and 30 dogs. The dog walkers would like especially to thank Andy and Jason of Town & Country Landscaping who very kindly donated their time and skills to the project by laying the concrete slab. The bench was “Officially Opened” by Gaz’s Mum, who cut the ribbon.

Foster Homes in Wendover Sought A leading foster care provider is looking for foster homes in Wendover and across Buckinghamshire for young unaccompanied sanctuary seekers from war-ravaged countries such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under the Children Act 1989, it is the legal responsibility of local authorities to care for under 18s who arrive in the country from abroad seeking sanctuary. However, with local authorities reportedly struggling to find places for these unaccompanied children,

Foster Care Associates (FCA) are urging people with a spare room to contact them directly.

Lynn Webb, chief operating officer for FCA, said: “At FCA we have a strong heritage of working with sanctuary seeking children from many countries and religious backgrounds. These children and young people are often extremely traumatised after a dangerous and long journey. As a society we have a legal, and more importantly moral, obligation to care for them and they should not be viewed as just a statistic.

“We urgently require specialist foster carers who can provide the security and stability that these children and young people need, whilst helping them to adjust to their lives in a new country.”

For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA, call 0800 022 4012 and speak to the FCA Recruitment Team, or enquire online at www.thefca.co.uk.

Tring’s Heritage is ‘App’-to-dateContinuing the celebrations of Tring’s 700 year Market Charter but bringing it bang up to date, the town now has a Heritage Trail both on a map and an ‘app’ - probably the first in the County. These enable everyone to explore the many historic and interesting places in and around Tring.

The Heritage Trail was launched during the Apple Fair on Saturday 10 October, at 2 pm at the town’s Local History Museum, The Market Place, Brook Street. You are welcome to collect a full colour printed guide, and to begin the trail using the App for Apple or Android devices.

Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, all this is free. Tring Local History Society Chairman Tim Amsden says: “Our town is full of history and this is an exciting way for many more people to engage with it. The App has many innovative features, such as the ability to superimpose your picture onto archive photographs of the same location.

Margaret Gosling’s fascinating display and Keith Robinson’s postcards brought new insight to the history of Wendover. Meanwhile musicians from the RAF accompanied the coffee and doughnuts that were served.

In the afternoon there was a children’s party with entertainment from a Science Boffin who showed the children lots of science experiments and was extremely interesting for both the children and the adults present. Of course, there was also jelly and ice cream.

The evening event was for members only and they were fortunate enough to listen to a very interesting talk from Group Captain Adrian Burns who gave an address about the last 50 years of RAF Halton followed by questions. A splendid birthday cake was cut by him and enjoyed by all those present. Local traders, including Budgens, A Little Bird Told Me Gallery, The Forge, Scruples, Wendy Lewis of the Loft Gallery, Cornelli Sugarcrafts, Scruples and Rumseys generously donated prizes to be raffled. Thank you all.

This leads us into the next 50 years during which the Society will continue its work to preserve and protect the character of our beautiful historic Market Town.

Pearce Family Free-Range Bronze Christmas TurkeysIf you’d like a locally reared free-range turkey for your Christmas Table, you need go no further than Stoke Mandeville where the Pearce family has been producing supreme quality hand-reared turkeys for over 40 years.

Their Free Range Bronze turkeys are reared with the run of a meadow during the day and housed in spacious barns at night. They are fed only on natural feeds containing no antibiotics or growth additives. The meat develops in a more tasty way because the birds are reared slowly. Plucking is done by hand to ensure a consistently high finish.

Each turkey is carefully wrapped and packaged in a presentation box (incuding cooking suggestions). The superior conditions in which their turkeys are raised are reflected in the depth and subtlety of their flavour, a quality that brings back generations of customers every year.

One of our more mature local businesses, Chiltern Brewery, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, see article page 24. They were completely ahead of the micro-brewery game before that trend was started or named and their experience really shows. They are celebrating the 50th anniversaries of The Chilterns Society and the local AONB.

We’re lucky that several new businesses have opened their doors during the past year and they’re all eagerly waiting to serve you.

Private PumpsPump Hunt For Sewage Station Owners• Thames Water to take on the responsibility

of 4,000 sewage pumping stations from property owners and managers

• Utility will take over electricity and maintenance costs under new legislation, potentially saving customers thousands of pounds

• Firm appeals for help tracking 1,800 ‘missing’ stations

• Thames Water is appealing to customers to help identify privately owned sewage pumping stations.

The utility, which serves 15 million customers across London and the Thames Valley, will take responsibility for around 4,000 pumping stations in October 2016, but needs to track down 1,800 currently off its radar.

New legislation means sewage pumping stations, which power wastewater away from properties and out into the public sewer pipe network, currently owned and maintained by customers, will become legally owned and operated by the local water company.

The pumping stations are all shapes and sizes, and can be in places where there are a number of properties needing to connect to the public sewer network. Customers will know they have one as they’ll be paying to maintain and power them.

Jerry White, of Thames Water, said: “This is really good news for customers. We’d urge anyone who thinks they may have one to get in touch so we can check they are eligible for the transfer of ownership. In some cases, as well as electricity savings, maintaining and replacing pumps can cost thousands of pounds so it’s an excellent deal for them. We believe we know where approximately half of the stations we need to take over are, but really need help to find the other 1,800. Please get in touch if you think this applies to you and we can take on the responsibility forever.”

Anyone with a private pumping station can make Thames Water aware at thameswater.co.uk/pumphunt.

Welcome to the NEW fitness movement in Wendover, the arrival of an official Spinning® studio, with the latest and smartest indoor bikes. Spinning® CBF are an inspirational and motivating team of instructors, who are

knowledgeable c o a c h e s , passionate about cycling and

making your workout fun. With over 20 years experience teaching and running studios, Cat Booker says, “I have been waiting for this opportunity to bring Spinning to people’s lives. I ride because it makes me feel better, and I know how strong it makes people both mentally and physically. I am thrilled to have the experience of the team joining me”.

The classes at Spinning® CBF launch on Monday 23 November, and come January more will take place all week long.

A launch timetable is available to view and book in advance of the studio opening. Booking sessions is really easy on the website, and passes are available to purchase online, by card or cash at the studio also.

The workouts will be themed, based on different terrain, heart rate energy zones, and sometimes just fun times to music to let your hair down to. The timetable is always developed with the customer trends and localised interest in mind. For anyone new

to the program, you are recommended to arrive 10 minutes early or book a bike induction to get set-up. These are free to the locals, and bookable by email.

There will be an OPEN Day on Saturday 28 November, so feel free to pop in and meet the team between 10 & 2pm. The CHRISTMAS Open Studios will be in partnership with Form Personal Training and CBF Functional Fitness classes.

Some history on Spinning®, the original indoor cycling brand: In 1991, cyclist and entrepreneur John Baudhuin and South African ultra-distance cyclist Johnny “Johnny G” Goldberg introduced the world to indoor cycling. Working out of a Santa Monica, California garage, they created Spinning® by uniting innovation in indoor stationary bike technology with an unprecedented cycling experience.

We are located behind Lloyds Bank in the Robert Mews Courtyard. Address: 2 Robert Mews, Wendover, HP22 6DU. The Spinning® and PT room are downstairs. The upstairs is where Form Personal Training, Pilates, and CBF Functional Fitness Classes take place. catbookerfitness.co.uk . See advert page 7.

Chiltern Double Fifty Ale to celebrate 50 golden years launched on 22 SeptemberThis year both The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and The Chiltern Society are celebrating 50 glorious years of helping to protect the tranquil landscape of the beautiful Chiltern Hills.

We were delighted to be approached by both organisations jointly and invited to brew a special draught ale to commemorate these landmark anniversaries. The resulting beer, Chiltern Double Fifty, named by Larry Griffiths, a member of the public in a free naming competition, is an autumn dark amber ale 4.2% vol with complex and rich smooth roast malt and citrus aromas.

Chiltern Double Fifty will be widely available in pubs across the local region as well as the Chiltern Brewery Shop at Terrick and 5p

from every pint sold will be donated to the societies.

“It’s definitely Double Fifty not out,” says our Head Brewer Tom Jenkinson. “We want these fantastic organisations to be around for as long as possible to help protect our wonderful rural landscape. Working and living in The Chiltern Hills is a very important part of the Brewery and those who work here. It is this foundational aspect which lends its style and character to our beers as well as being a huge inspiration for us. It’s great as well to be able to give something in return.”

The Chiltern Hills have long been one of one of England’s most beautiful landscapes and in 1965 this was officially recognised when 309 square miles of the Chilterns were designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. AONB’s belong to the same family as National Parks representing some of the finest landscapes in the UK. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body responsible for promoting and conserving the Chilterns AONB and is delighted to be working

Business Forumwith their close partner The Chiltern Society to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of both the AONB and the Society this year.

“The Chilterns have some wonderful local products and creating a special anniversary beer with The Chiltern Brewery, the oldest independent brewery in the area and itself celebrating 35 years this year, seems a very fitting way to mark this golden year for the Chiltern Hills. It’s certainly a ‘refreshing’ way to engage with the public at a time when our local countryside faces increased pressure,” said a society spokesperson.

The Chiltern Society is the only registered charity dedicated to conserving and caring for the Chilterns’ unique landscape. It has 7,000 members and 500 volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain and improve the Chilterns for the benefit of all. Over the last 50 years it has contributed 163,000 hours of volunteering, acquired and improved 12 important nature reserves and heritage sites and maintained over 7,000 miles of footpaths and cycleways.

The Chiltern Brewery is the oldest independent brewery in the area. From the very start the ethos at The Chiltern Brewery has been to brew natural, wholesome beers using 100% British ingredients - the best Class A malt and hops with great provenance and to mirror age old brewing methods. Chiltern Double Fifty uses Goldings, Fuggles and Cascade hops, Maris Otter malt, Crystal and roast barley for a truly “special” anniversary brew.

BNI DestinyWe are a new business networking group meeting at The Red Lion in Wendover, looking to help local businesses grow their business through referral marketing. Thank You Very MuchThanks to family and friends for attending my husband Derek Beecham’s funeral. Thank you to Heritage and Sons Funeral Directors and Vicar Mark Dearnley for a fitting service, and also to Pat & Pauline at The Pack Horse for the lovely food. We were able to raise a wonderful donation for Florence Nightingale Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Olive Beecham & family

Inconsiderate ParkingI find myself again pleading with drivers to be more considerate when parking around The Pack Horse PH, Clay Lane and The Poplars. Cars are continuing to park on the footpaths and blocking the lowered curbs resulting in pedestrians walking on the road. Drivers are also parking opposite residents driveways which then blocks their access as the lanes are very narrow. Some drivers are parking on the corner of Clay Lane on the path outside the Pack Horse which then blocks the line of sight needed to safely pull out onto the main Tring Road. At some point either the Parish Council or Police need to take action in order to reduce the risks associated with this type of antisocial parking.

Noise & SpeedI read with interest the Robert Duggan (Chairman WPC) article on noise and speed on the by-pass in the Wendover News September edition. It is good to know that the police are involved in the motorbike problems we all suffer from. But like everything there is a downside, at least for us in our post code along the A413, where the problem has shifted to. After all, we are still Wendover despite some forgetting on occasions. It looks as though the offenders have moved to us having been tackled on the by-pass, and the same is happening down to the Missenden by-pass according to feedback from residents living behind the railway station. After many months we have a lighting speed sign in one direction (still not convinced that it is working) but if anything, this appears to have increased the noise and speed on this section of the A413 especially at weekends.

Save the Children ThanksA big “thank you” to everyone who donated during our street collection in Wendover on Saturday 6 September. We collected £243 and this has been forwarded to this year’s Refugee Crisis Appeal.

In response to “What is a U3A?”Wendover U3A endorses the article about “What is a U3A?” and fully agree that joining a U3A gives a whole new dimension to a retirement life, but would like to clarify the position as regards Wendover U3A. To become a member of Wendover U3A, a person would need to contact our Membership Secretary through the Wendover U3A website to discuss vacancies.

Wendover FC are set for an exciting season with both the 1st and Reserve Teams being promoted to the Premier and 2nd division of the ADL respectively. With a great 2014/2015 season, which held some really exciting football, we are pumped for the 2015/2016 season.

First games were played at the end of August which saw some new players join our current talented players to make us a club to be reckoned with. With strong leadership in place with our managers and two new captains along with the induction of a new Chairman we are looking at a strong and committed task force both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

A great thing was witnessed in our last season, a flurry of new and existing supporters attended both our home and away matches which we feel was a huge contributor to the success of our teams. We are now looking for this to continue for this season and would

love to see some new faces down at the club. There is a home game every Saturday with matches kicking off at 14:00, unless it’s a cup match which kicks off slightly earlier at 13:30, at the John Colet playing fields. You will also find our clubhouse there offering hot and cold beverages to keep you refreshed during and after the game.

All fixtures can be found on Football Mitoo at football.mitoo.co and by selecting the Aylesbury District Football League you will also be able to keep track on our league placement for both teams. We also have a Facebook & Twitter page where you can read the popular weekly match updates, keep track on fixtures, see our latest match photos and learn more about the club. Please follow us at:Facebook: www.facebook.com/wendoverfc.towersTwitter: @fc_wendover

Here’s to another exciting season and a big thank you for all your support.

Successful Open DayThe Wendover Arm Trust held their second Restoration Open Day of this year on Sunday 6 September at St Mary’s Church, Drayton Beauchamp by kind permission of the Vicar.

Hundreds of people attended the event and six conducted tours of the current restoration site were arranged throughout the day. They were able to see volunteers working on restoration and to gain an insight into the methods involved, whilst on the restored section opened last April, some paddle boarders displayed their expertise. Display boards were also on show outside the Church with volunteers answering numerous questions posed by the public. The Grand Draw was held at 3pm.

Throughout the day the Tea Tent was fully staffed by volunteers and the delicious cakes on offer were fully sold out by the close at 4.30 p.m. The Trust had one of the best ever days for new memberships and a range of new merchandise was available at the Sales Stall.

A meeting of supporters is being held on Tuesday 3 November, at 7 p.m at Green Park Activity Centre, Stablebridge Road, Aston Clinton. This will be hosted by the Canal & River Trust and WAT. If any readers of “Wendover News” would like to support our efforts by attending please give us advance notice by telephoning 07547 181857. Additional members and volunteers are always needed and further information can be obtained from the website, www.wendoverarmtrust.co.uk.

This month sees Everyball Tennis take over the management of tennis coaching at our Club, they will be running a series of free taster sessions to introduce the new coaches. The sessions are open to members and non-members and further information can be found in the coaching section of our website, www.wendovertesnnisandsquash.co.uk.

Wendover Bowls ClubThe outdoor season has now ended with the last matched being played on the last weekend in September.

The Club is now ready for the Short Match Season, with matches being played in the Clubhouse during the winter. This is a busy time with not only matches being played at home but also away at various venues around the area. There also “Spoon Drives” (friendly roll ups for Club Members) on most Mondays Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the season and also on the 2nd and 4th Sunday in each month. All matches start at 2.15 pm, so members should arrive at 2.00 pm at the latest.

A programme of 11 Social Events has been prepared which commenced on 17 October; these continue throughout the Winter, finishing with the Pre Season Dinner on 17 April.

Finally, the Club is again hosting the Village Quiz so why not come along and see what the club has to offer in terms of its facilities. If you want any further information, contacts are as follows: Brian Wheeler 01296 622605, Brian Harrison 01296 630669, Ann Smith 01494 569377.

Wendover Cricket Club The club is gearing up for its long-running annual fundraising auction on Saturday 14 November (see advert page 4). It raises valuable funds as well as being a fun day out and all are welcome, whether or not they’ve been before. Bidding starts at 11.30 and usually ends around 4.30 p.m.

Sparrowhawks Netball Team is 1!Whilst they may not be the oldest sports team in Wendover, the SparrowHawks netball team are certainly starting to make their mark on the village in an eventful first year for the club. Following on from the example set by the football team, the players are proud to wear the Wendover sporting colours of Black and Gold when they play in the Aylesbury District Netball league. Their training is certainly paying off so far, as they hold an unbeaten record of three wins from three games and are currently sitting at the top of the division 5 league table.

Having been up and running for just over a year, the Sparrowhawks held a celebratory dinner at the Red Lion in early October which was well attended by the whole club. Looking much more glamorous than usual,

and following the Black and Gold dress code, the team had a fantastic evening celebrating their successes and receiving awards which had been voted on. Every single player received a medal, but certain players also received special awards:Supports Player – Lucy AdlerCoach / Captain Player – Liz BraithwaiteChairwoman’s Cup – Leisl BowesMost Improved Player – Alice SymondsPlayers Player – Amy Hodson

The Sparrowhawks are always open to new players joining, and train every Thursday evening in Aston Clinton. Further details, including match fixtures and match reports can be found on our website www.wendovernetballclub.weebly.com.

The Vale Tour - Whitchurch Morris Men14 November will see the last of the large public dancing out occasions of the year, The 2015 Vale Tour for the Whitchurch Men. We have sides coming from Leicester, Sarratt and Enfield as well as representatives from Durham, Leeds and elsewhere. The itinerary is:• 11:00 Manor Waste, High Street, Wendover• 12:00 The Bell, Hardwick• 12:50 The White Swan, Whitchurch • 14:30 Friars Square Shopping Centre,

Aylesbury • 16:05 Upper High Street, Aylesbury• 17:00 The Rose and Crown, Wingrave• 18:00 The Half Moon, Wilstone

We’re hoping for some nice weather, but this year we’ve arranged a first by having an opportunity to dance in Friars Square so at least one venue will be warm and dry. Of course, having danced all day, the evening lends itself to the usual feast with a chance to rest the weary joints and the replenishment of vital fluids in the traditional manner.

Our practice nights are on Tuesdays at 8:15pm in Wilstone Village Hall so all you men and boys have to do is come along and join us. You can contact us through our web address www.whitchurchmorris.org.uk, just turn up on the night or come and meet us on tour.

John Colet Welcome RAF VisitorJohn Colet school staff and students were delighted to welcome Group Captain Adrian Burns, Station C o m m a n d e r of RAF Halton recently. The school invited the Group Captain as part of a commitment to developing and maintaining links with the local RAF base. Group Captain Burns enjoyed a tour of the school to see the facilities on offer and to view a specially created display on life as a Service Child. He then met with several of the service children who attend the school.Seven per cent of students at the school live at RAF Halton and the school offers support to them in a number of ways. All Service Children are able to access one-to-one support with the school’s Service Children Network support officer. This provides those

that need it a confidential person to talk to regarding any issues they are facing, including dealing with the deployment of a parent, which can make for a very difficult time.

Head teacher Christine McLintock said: “We were delighted to welcome Group Captain Burns to John Colet. He was able to see the school that many of the young people living at RAF Halton attend, the support that we have in place for them and to hear their first-hand experience. “We are very pleased to work with RAF Halton in a number of ways; team building sessions for Year 12 and Work Experience placements for Year 10. We are always looking at ways to further develop the links.”

Road Safety Petition Follows FatalityJohn Colet students are overwhelmed by the huge response they have received following the petition they started regarding road safety. Form 11C decided to start the petition calling for improvements to Brook End road in Weston Turville following the tragic death of former John Colet student Ben Roberts.

11C decided to start the petition as their MAD (Make A Difference) Week activity. MAD week is an initiative run by the John Colet where each form has a dedicated week to “Make A Difference” through either fundraising for charity, highlighting issues within society or making community visits. In light of the sad news last week the form agreed this was an important issue to highlight and so set up an online petition which they promoted through social media. Students hoped to receive 1000 signatures and are thrilled by the response which saw them reaching their target in less than a week, with more signatures still being added.

Head teacher Mrs McLintock said: “This is such an important issue and one which is close to the hearts of everyone at the John Colet. I am proud of 11C for starting this petition and delighted at the response it has received.”

You can sign the petition at: www.ipetitions.com/petition/more-safety-by-aylesbury-rugby-club

IntroductionAfter years in the corporate world, travelling for business and pleasure, Ravi Maheswaran, a local Wendover resident of fourteen years, decided to leave corporate life and turn a hobby into a new business venture. In July this year Ravi became a travel consultant and set up Simply Luxurious Travel Ltd, based out of his home office in Wendover.

Ravi’s aim is to be the go-to travel consultant for people residing in Wendover, Weston Turville and the surrounding villages who are looking to plan a bespoke holiday or trip of a lifetime - this could be anything from a cruise, a safari, a sun and beach holiday, a sport based holiday or a trip to see any iconic destination.

Great choice and independenceSimply Luxurious Travel Ltd is an authorised agent for over 450 tour operators, including well known brands such as Sandals, Kuoni, Mark Warner, Inghams, Thomas Cook etc

but also destination specialist operators and tailor-made holiday operators who deal solely with commercial agents and not the public. Giving you exclusive access to a vast array of options, Simply Luxurious Travel will be able to obtain quotes from the best suited operators to get you the perfect travel itinerary.

Great value for moneyWith a background in accountancy, Ravi is a firm believer that offering great value for money is a key selling point of any business. The travel industry is completely commission based and high street travel agents will often increase commissions to pay for office overheads, staffing costs etc. With neither

of these factors to consider, Simply Luxurious Travel offers great value for money.

Professionalism guaranteedCustomers can be assured of a professional, friendly and honest approach with Ravi’s experience and background. As a family man with three children, he also has first-hand experience of some of the nuances travelling with children can bring, but holds a firm belief that travel and seeing different cultures offers the best education for the young.

Security Security and customer satisfaction are at the forefront of the company’s mindset. Simply Luxurious Travel Ltd is a member of ABTA and all holidays sold by the company are ATOL protected, giving customers complete financial protection.

For more information or any enquiries, Ravi can be contacted on 07849 965468, 01296 326114 or email [email protected]. See advert page 13.

International Defence Rugby CompetitionThe first groups of the International Defence Rugby Competition have been battled out at RAF Halton with the Royal Air Force taking on foreign military teams South Africa, Tonga and Georgia.

The Navy were hosts to Japan, Fiji and New Zealand and the Army hosted France, Canada and Australia.

Each team brought their own management, medical and coaching staff. On 19 October, the teams played their quarter finals at Halton with the semi finals at the Stoop, Harlequins RFC on the 23rd and the final at the Stoop on 29 October. Sadly, the result of the RAF quarter final on 19 October was RAF 13 - France 29.

The IDRC 2015 Semi Final Draw is:Fiji v France, KO - 15:00 British Army v New Zealand, KO - 18:30 hrs Tickets for the matches on the 23rd were available to buy online at: tickets.quins.co.uk/PagesPublic/Home/home.aspx or on the gate for only £10. Details tbc for Finals.

Most of the games have had a fly past by a Tornado or Chinnook and spectators have been treated to the Hakka by the visiting teams.

The Royal Air Force Rugby Union (RAFRU) was formed on 15 January 1920 and has continued to administer the game within the Service ever since with a few ups and downs over the years. It has won the overall Inter Services competition 15 times and shared the title twice.

The History of the IDRCThe Inaugural competition was held in 2011 in Australia and New Zealand. Pool matches

and quarter finals took place in Australia with the semi finals and final taking place in New Zealand12 teams competed: • Royal Navy• Royal Air Force• British Army• Tongan Defence Services• French Armed Forces• New Zealand Defence Force• Samoa Police• Papua New Guinea Defence Force• Peoples Liberation Army (China)• South African National Defence Force• Australian Federal Police• Australian Defence ForceThe Samoan Police beat the Tongan Defence Services 22-17 in the 3rd/4th play off. The competition was won by the British Army who beat the Australian Defence Force, 62-17 in the final.

Halton House Open DayThere were at least 1500 visitors to the Halton House Open Day. Halton House was the “party” House for Alfred de Rothschild until the House was purchased by the War Office in 1918 and became the Officers’ Mess for RAF Halton. The Grade II* listed House was built between 1880 and 1884.

The weather was kind, with people sitting on the Terrace eating cream teas, strolling through the House and commenting on the amazing decor.

There were both civilian volunteers and RAF personnel on hand to expand on the history of the House and its decoration. The illustrations showing the occasional use of the House for filming in modern times created a great deal of interest. Of special focus to some was the exact spot where Colin Firth stood during the filming of “The King’s Speech” - in the Gold Room.

Trixie Brabner, one of the hosts and tour guide, said: “An exhausting day for some as there was so much to see. On hand were coaches to take people to the Trenchard Museum, the reconstructed Training Trenches and the Halton Village Festival. The hosts all went home happy but exhausted, with ideas for the Open Day next year.”

Remco van den Heuvel and his wife Elly moved to Wendover in September 2015 just in time for Remco’s induction as the new minister of Wendover Free Church. Remco and Elly have just finished three years theological study at Regent’s Park College in Oxford and Remco has completed three years as Minister-in-training at Salem Baptist Church in Hillingdon. Remco is now a Newly Accredited Baptist Minister and Wendover Free Church is Remco’s first church as ordained Minister.

As the name suggests, Remco is not originally from England. He was born and raised in the Netherlands and came to England in 2001 for the first time on a placement as part of his engineering physics degree. Remco’s student placement was at the Brunel Institute for Bioengineering at Brunel University, London where he met Elly. Remco and Elly were married in 2003 at Slough Baptist Church and Remco became a UK resident. Remco continued to study first for an MSc in Biochemical Engineering at UCL and then he returned to Brunel for His PhD studies that involved a technique called Counter-current Chromatography which can be used to process pharmaceuticals. Do ask him to explain what that is all about if you are interested! After obtaining his PhD, Remco was employed as a research engineer in Bioengineering at Brunel. During this time Remco and Elly were hosting a home group and very involved in children’s

work at Slough Baptist Church. Remco became more and more involved in leadership positions at Slough Baptist and at Brunel University. Having completed a growing leaders course at Slough Baptist Church and tried (and failed) to complete an online Theology degree Remco was challenged by a talk at the Spring Harvest Christian conference to get off the fence and start moving. This made him think about his future and what the best way forward would be. In 2011 Elly and Remco started to explore whether they should enter Christian Ministry in the Baptist Church. As a first step Remco spoke to his minister who said something like “What took you so long!” In 2012, Remco left science behind to start his ministerial training, but r e m a i n e d involved at Brunel by serving as a volunteer chaplain with the chaplaincy team. Elly remained as Research Fellow at Brunel but reduced her working week to three days to enable her to study alongside Remco. After three years of combining study, church ministry and chaplaincy Remco is pleased to be able to focus his attention on ministry and the Wendover community and is hoping to find

time to enjoy some painting, music, walking and swimming; hobbies which have been on the backburner since starting training in 2012.

Remco and Elly have received an incredibly warm welcome from the people of Wendover and Wendover Free Church already feels like family to them. Remco has started to become familiar with Churches Together and is getting to know local ministers. He is looking forward to getting to know the people of the village and he plans to visit local businesses and make connections in the community. Remco and Elly love working with children and Remco plans to

contact the local schools to find out what help and support Wendover Free Church could provide.

Remco gave up working in scientific research because he felt that building strong communities, drawing on the good news of God’s love was a better way to make a difference in the world.

He is committed to being an integral part of the Wendover community and he would love to chat to local people to help him understand what makes Wendover tick.

Do say hello to Remco and Elly when you see them. They would be very pleased to chat with you and get to know you.

View from The ChairI hope some of you saw the Memorial Plaque displayed in our window recently. The Plaque marks the Council’s appreciation to all those people who gave generously to help fund the restoration of the Clock Tower roof. The plaque is made from a section of the recently removed bell tower ladder, which was climbed at least once a week when winding the Clock. This is now done by an electrical autowinding system and the ladder replaced with something safer for our staff to climb when occasionally having to adjust the time. There were many anonymous donors who gave to the fund in various ways, such as entering quiz nights, dropping change into collection boxes and running events. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who contributed to restoring our iconic landmark.

Although the major works to the Clock Tower are complete, the Council is still looking for ways to improve its facilities. We now offer the Clock Tower window to clubs and community groups advertising for new members, events and fund raising. The Council recently decided to improve this facility and it will be having a proper display case made for the window.

We are of course continuing our campaign to reduce the impact of HS2 on this Village and we would like to congratulate everyone who has attended the Select Committee in the Houses of Parliament. Having stood in front of the Committee myself, I know

what a daunting challenge this is. Seeing so many of you up there has made me proud to represent this Village as Chairman of the Parish Council. Good luck to all of you yet to appear.

Robert DugganChair of Wendover Parish Council

Reporting Faulty Street LightsAt this time of year we start to see problems with our street lights. The Parish Council maintains all the street lighting in the village with the exception of the High Street, Aylesbury Road, Tring Road and South Street/London Rd. If you see a light that needs attention please report the identification number (every column should have one!) by calling us or reporting it online - www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/residents-information/street-lighting-faults/

30mph Wheelie Bin Stickers We have purchased 30mph reminder stickers for residents to put on their wheelie bins. If you would like to remind drivers to keep to the 30mph limit on your road you can pick up your FREE sticker at the Library from Tuesday 3 November. The

Library can also give out small quantities to residents who would like to help us by handing them out to neighbours and friends. A maximum of two stickers per bin please, and do not leave your bin out any longer than usual. Library Opening Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 9.30-17.00, Friday 9.30-19.00, Saturday 10.00-16.00.

Christmas This year’s celebration will be on Friday 4 December on the Manor Waste and will include Craft and Christmas stalls, hot food, a bar and switching on the Christmas Tree lights by a very special guest. It is also late night shopping evening. We are hoping that Father Christmas will bring some reindeer to say hello to the children who come to see him. This year’s charity is The Wendover Swimming Pool. Look out for the December Wendover News for full details!

The small Christmas Trees put up outside the shops will be dressed with new energy saving LED white lights. Any shops wishing to have a tree are reminded to contact the Parish Council as soon as possible.

Twinning Stone Face LiftMonday 1 August 2016 will be the 40th Anniversary of the Twinning Agreement between Wendover and Liffre. The Twinning Stone, located outside the Library, is to be cleaned and re-grouted as part of a WPC/Library project to mark the occasion.
