APRIL 1915The Second Battle of Ypres began on 22 April 1915 and the Germans used poison gas for the first time in the war. Only a determined defence by Canadian troops checked the German advance. On 25 April 70,000 British, Australian and French troops landed at Helles and Anzac Cove in Gallipoli in an effort to take Turkey out of the war. Italy entered the war on the side of the Allies. At sea, the British ship the Seven Seas was torpedoed off Beachy Head and the German submarine U-10 sank three British trawlers. Zeppelins bombed East Anglia, Tyneside and some London suburbs. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lloyd George, concerned at the ill-effects of alcohol on industrial production, increased the tax on beer and spirits and persuaded King George V and his household to abstain for the duration. It was a gesture ignored by most of the population.

In Wendover the Holland Brewery in the High Street advertised its price list stating that “These prices do not include the additional War Tax”. Ale XXX cost 2d a pint and the strong Double Stout 2 1/2 d a pint. Wendover’s fifteen public houses thrived.

By April 1915 work to improve the amenities at Halton Camp was nearing completion. In the early months of the war, particularly during the winter of 1914-15, the camp area had suffered from flooding and lack of catering and hygiene facilities and these led to the spread of infection and desertion. As a result, soldiers were billeted out to homes in the area and many were found accommodation in Wendover. The tents at Halton were replaced by wooden huts and a newspaper report in April described the movement of troops back to the Camp and the great preparations for their return. A

new road, now Forest Close, was constructed from the Station to Dobbins Lane to ease the movement of troops. Now that trench warfare was established on the Western Front the training of soldiers included the design and construction of trenches and these are still in evidence in the Halton grounds.

Sailors were not forgotten and Mrs C.S. Routh, of the Manor House, organised the collection of fruit and vegetables, many gathered by school children, and these were sent to the Fleet. The German U-boat activity and the loss of British merchant ships placed great emphasis on the local production of food. Mr Charles Adams of Manor Farm relinquished his lease on a piece of land in Tring Road to provide an extra garden area for the school. The entry in the School Log Book for 12 April 1915 stated : “ Work started and continued more or less each day on the new garden”. Fourteen girls and fourteen boys were each allocated a plot of land to produce vegetables and much of their produce went to the war effort.

The soldiers from the Camp swelled the population of Wendover. Mr E. Sanders of Vine Tree Dairy was hard pressed to supply the required quantities of milk and advertised for additional milk to be brought to Wendover Station. There was full employment and an increasing demand for houses for rent. The war had brought considerable prosperity to the town.

U3A take on youngsters and win… During February half term the centre was awash with activity. There was a junior first aid course run by Bucks County Council, which gave some of the young leaders the chance to earn a qualification that benefits the centre and them as young people. This was a fun and productive day.

The centre also hosted Premier Sports activity camp. www.sport.premier-education.com lists more of those to come.

On the last day of half term, it was time for battle to commence, as several of our young people took on the giants that are the university of the third age for table tennis. The young people didn’t quite realise what they were taking on, as very quickly they were beaten in almost every game. However, heads are still held high and they are now challenging the U3A to something more physical, dodgeball. As I reflect on this event and look at the picture above, I am just inspired as these two generations came together. The atmosphere was great and the energy high

as these groups came together and shared knowledge and experience.

After the tournament the young people spent some time coming up with ideas for our Apprentice-style competition and doing Dragons’ Den-style presentations. To find out more about The Apprentice, which we are running in conjunction with Budgens and the Wendover Youth Forum, email me [email protected]. And if this wasn’t enough, we finished the day off with some go karting. The Youth Forum have now got their own go karts. If you would like to hire them for your youth group, go to www.youthforum.co.uk/wheelspin.

Rotary Technology Tournament 2015On Friday 27 February four John Colet Teams took part in the Rotary Technology tournament at Chiltern Hills Academy. The teams were made up of students from Year 7 – Year 10 and everyone was delighted as John Colet won three out of four categories at the tournament.

Technology teacher Mr Brand was also entered into the advanced level category!

Team were challenged to create a rescue vehicle powered by a motor and battery pack, which then needed to run across a one metre suspended string across a river, with no human contact with the device whilst in motion. The younger teams also had to create an on/off switch, whilst the Year 10 team needed to install a reverse mechanism for the vehicle so it could drop a rescue package and reverse back across the string! Material available included cogs, wires, wooden rods, a motor, a battery pack, paperclips, screws, string and various other items.

All teams had from 10am – 2pm to design and make their model, and all agreed the time whizzed by. All teams were thrilled as every vehicle constructed successfully made it across the string.

Two of the four teams were awarded £25 each prize money and as a school the teams also won a trophy for having the most triumphs in the various categories.

Year 9 Apprenticeship AssemblyAs part of National Apprenticeship Week, Year 9 students were given a presentation about the scheme. Lauren Green, Lauren Ruta and Charlotte Bridson are all currently studying various apprenticeships and spoke about their experiences.

The presentation was organised through Bucks Adult Learning, who ran a series of presentations across the county to inform current students about apprenticeships, and inspire students to consider this career option.

Two of the speakers were former John Colet students, so it was particularly interesting to welcome them back and hear about their experiences since leaving school.

Chiltern Way FederationWendover Campus is delighted to share with you our recent educational outcomes and how they compare nationally. Using published data and comparing it to the 132 other similar schools in the country, Wendover came 8th in terms of Average

Points Score (APS) and 1st in meeting expected levels of progress in English.

Prestwood Campus, our sister school in the federation, came 3rd in the APS league tables. This is an outstanding achievement of which we are extremely proud.

We are delighted for our pupils who have worked hard to achieve such outstanding results and this in turn affords them greater life chances when they leave the school.

We have an imminent local authority review inspection and will update you on the outcome of this in the next edition. Fingers crossed!

On Saturday 14 March the Wendover POP group hosted a very successful meeting for over 50 petitioners from the Wendover area. Bob Duggan welcomed everyone and explained the idea was to get petitioners to start to think about appearing in front of the select committee, what evidence they needed and how they were going to present it. This was achieved by sharing with them the lessons learnt from observing the select committee and a short excerpt of the select committee on TV and by trying to establish what petitioners’ needs were for support and training. The idea of jointly petitioning was discussed. In addition an update on HS2 was provided by Hilary Wharf of HS2AA and Ray Payne talked about the Chiltern Long Tunnel. A big thank you to the speakers and helpers who helped make this event a success. Based on this progress Wendover HS2 plans to lead further meetings to support petitioners.

The timetable for the select committee has been announced up until the break

for electioneering. They will not start again until after the general election in May. Consequently the visit of the select committee to the area is likely to be in the second half of May or early June.

Our MPs have been lobbying for the select committee to have a 3 day visit to Buckinghamshire – one day for each constituency. Clearly the number of petitions from Wendover and the Chilterns represent a challenge to them. Deciding on a tunnel early would potentially save them time and effort, but just how to do it is still open to debate. The select committee could hear the tunnel promoters and councils between June and summer recess and then hear individuals after the summer recess. Or they could hear the Colne Valley proposals and those petitions come down from the north towards Wendover before the summer recess and then hear the Chilterns after the summer. They have a great challenge in front of them.

Here is a question for those interested in these things .The select committee started hearing Petitioners last July, by the end of March they will have heard 400. If there are over 800 in the Chilterns how long will it take to hear them all? Either way it seems individual petitioners will not be called before September.

I spent a morning last week sitting in on the select committee hearing petitioners from the Colne Valley. It was enlightening. The most surprising thing I found is that my opinion of MP’s went up after this experience. They were polite and helpful to petitioners, most importantly they listened (they may not have agreed but they were there). I could see why they get a little bit irritated by repetition and generalities. They liked personal stories – how does HS2 impact you walking your dog, weeding your garden, driving to work or sitting on your patio. They seemed interested which I thought was great.

Some other breaking news:• HS2 no longer going to Heathrow• Euston for HS2 seems to be shrinking and

costing even more• Select committee stopped hearing

petitions on 23 March. A few days of private meetings follow and then they start electioneering

• The House of Lords Economic affairs committee report on HS2 due 25 March

• Chiltern Long Tunnel scheduled to be published towards the end of March

Carers BucksCarers Bucks, the charity which supports and promotes the wellbeing of unpaid family carers, is celebrating 10 years of providing a service to carers across Buckinghamshire. Carers Bucks currently provides support to over 7300 adult carers and nearly 600 young carers, in different types of caring role, across the County from Burnham to Buckingham.

Stephen Archibald, Chief Executive of Carers Bucks says: “It’s been 10 years since we started our first support group and we have come a long way since then. Our work continues to reach out to all carers who require our support, and we look forward to the next 10 years of helping unpaid family carers in Buckinghamshire”.

There are currently over 49,500 unpaid adult carers in Buckinghamshire and each week

almost 200 people become a carer for the first time. Carers Bucks exists entirely to help and support carers of all ages and in different caring roles, including young carers, parent carers, young adult carers, older carers and carers from the black and minority ethnic community.

From April 2015, the Care Act will come into force and will be implemented in two stages over the next two years, and will affect everyone who needs care and support.

New rights entitle carers and the people they care for to an assessment of their needs regardless of their income and finances or their level of need. The benefit of having an assessment is that it will identify care and support needs and provide information and advice about services to meet those needs. In April 2016 the remaining parts of the Care Act will come into effect, including the introduction of the “Care Cap”.

Wendover News regrets to inform readers of the death of Gordon Newman, aged 89, on 24 February. His funeral was held in Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire, on Friday 13 March. Anyone who wishes may make a donation to The Alzheimer’s Society. Many thanks to Richard Williams who attended the funeral representing John Colet School and who provided the evocative photo.

Gordon William Newman was headmaster of John Colet School from 1962 to 1984.

Cherry-Anne Evans, who taught with Gordon in both The Grange and The Colet, writes: Prior to taking on the headship of John Colet School, Gordon Newman had been deputy headmaster at The Grange School in Aylesbury. He took over a small,

rural school and built it into a thriving educational establishment with a very good academic reputation. Pupils and staff alike appreciated his forward looking policies, his disciplinary requirements and his interest.

He was not a remote figurehead but a hands on, visible, headmaster.

Philip Mitchell adds: In 1984 I was very lucky to become headmaster to succeed Gordon Newman as headteacher of John Colet School, which was well respected in the local area. There was a good work ethic among the children and the

staff were clearly focussed on the needs of the pupils.

There has been a lot in the media recently about Lasting Powers of Attorney and how they operate. Unfortunately, many of the articles which appear either only tell part of the story or are misleading in some respect.

The Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) was introduced in October 2007. There are two types of LPA – one for Property & Financial Affairs and one for Health & Welfare issues. Before October 2007, it was possible to make an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). These are still valid and continue to be used widely but they only cover property and financial decisions and do not give the attorney any rights in relation to health and welfare matters.

An LPA for Property & Financial Affairs is a legal document in which you (the donor) give someone else (your attorney or attorneys) the authority to manage your property and financial affairs if you are not able to do so. An LPA for Health & Welfare matters gives your attorney rights in relation to matters such as access to medical records, making life sustaining decisions, where you should

live e.g. a care home. The Office of the Public Guardian’s registration fee for each type of LPA is currently £110.

If you lose capacity without having an LPA in place then your bank accounts may be frozen, bills may go unpaid and it would mean that someone concerned with your affairs would have to make an application to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy to manage your affairs. If you have no close family, it may be that the Local Authority would make this application themselves.

The costs of making an application to the Court of Protection are usually considerably greater than making an LPA.

Removing Cycle RacksThe Parish Council has decided to remove the three cycle racks from their land in front of Budgens store when the Manor Waste is refurbished later this year. The Council would place new racks at the east and west extremities of the Waste as part of the makeover of this public space. Get Wendover Cycling, the local cycling amenity pressure group, has argued forcefully against this proposed change. Arguments made included:

• That the original black “Sheffield Pattern” racks had been requested by the former owners of Budgens to bring order to the parking of bicycles in front of the store. The request was met jointly by the Parish Council and the County Council who each bore half the cost. Removing the racks now would be to waste this public expenditure.

• Bike racks are an effective solution to the problem of where to leave bicycles. Without racks cycles will be left propped against shop frontages, private property and any other handy object such as benches, trees,

litter and flower bins etc., or worse still, will be left sprawled over the pavement, particularly by small children.

• Racks provide secure fittings to padlock a bike to.• Budgens is the most frequently visited

destination in the village for cyclists and is also the source of the greatest volume and weight of purchases made.

• Motorists can lock shopping in their cars whilst returning trolleys, cyclists must leave theirs unattended.

• Cyclists would be deprived of one of the principal benefits of cycling - it represents door to door transport.

• Some shopping trolleys will be abandoned by the new cycle racks rather than being returned.

• The weather awnings along the front of Budgens offer shelter from the rain.

• If the bike racks are removed it’s likely the cyclists shopping at Budgens will default and leave their bike as near as possible to the front of the store, propped against anything to hand. Is this the untidy image either Budgens or the Parish Council wish to see imposed on the smartly restored Manor Waste?

GWC lobbied for additional racks at either end of the Waste when the project was first considered and had assurances that these would be provided in addition to the current provision. What GWC didn’t expect and deplores in the strongest possible terms was that the present racks be removed from what is public not private land. We have not lost hope that this unfortunate decision could be reversed if we could gain sufficient support from Wendover cyclists and other sympathetic residents. If you wish to support GWC, please email the clerk to the parish council ([email protected]).

Chris Peeler, chair, Get Wendover Cycling

Doubling the Number of Cycle RacksAs many of you are aware, the Parish Council is planning a refurbishment project of Manor Waste with the main aims being to improve safety and the usability of the land. As part of the plans the Parish Council decided to give additional provision to cyclists by having

racks for cycle parking at both ends of Manor Waste, instead of the single rack currently located in front of Budgens. WPC has considered the arguments put forward by Get Wendover Cycling (GWC) to keep a rack at the front of Budgens. Wendover Parish Council (WPC) has to consider all of the users of the Manor Waste and how they will be using the land now and in the future. For example, we have a number of people who use mobility scooters and people with prams, all of whom we are sure would like to leave their valuable equipment under cover, in sight and near to hand.

By doubling the provision of cycle racks currently on Manor Waste, WPC continues to support responsible cycling in Wendover and beyond. We are currently looking at plans to install cycle racks at the Cricket Club on The Witchell. When WPC engaged with the community, through a comprehensive and well publicised

consultation process prior to developing the Manor Waste project, one of the questions asked was whether provision for cycle parking should be increased. There were 254 completed questionnaires returned in total. A great response for this kind of consultation. 32% of responders expressed the wish to have increased cycle parking provision. Statistically this was the lowest approval ratio of the four choices where people expressed an opinion. The WPC decided to take a positive view for the future and to increase the cycle rack provision. By placing a rack at each end of the Manor Waste it is believed cyclists will see them more easily and realise that they are for general use and not just for Budgens shoppers. We also want to reduce the number of cycles being ridden across what is primarily a pedestrian area to reduce the risk of a collision. The old black cycle rack was removed to facilitate Budgens in meeting its obligation to

provide an access ramp. Sweeney’s Budgens then funded the replacement of the old racks. The WPC hopes to reuse these racks elsewhere as the style of rack is not in keeping with the overall design for the refurbishment of the Manor Waste. GWC is concerned that cyclists going to Budgens will not use a rack at the ends of Manor Waste but will instead drop their bikes outside of the shop. WPC believes cyclists in the village are more responsible than this. For many, we are sure their cycles are simply too valuable to them to just abandon in this way. Cyclists leaving their bicycles in inappropriate places outside shops and businesses in the rest of the village does not seem to be a problem. Whether you are a cyclist or not, we hope that you are satisfied that the PC has done its bit to “Get Wendover Cycling” whilst at the same time meeting the needs of the wider community that elected us.

Lindengate springs into actionAs we soak up the joys of another spring and all that it heralds for the year ahead, Lindengate is very excited to be fully operational with an ever expanding and successful community of “Gardeners” and volunteers.

We have been greatly encouraged by all the amazing work that everyone involved with Lindengate has put into seeing us through our first winter and as the site starts to turn from brown to green we can really feel that we are reaping the benefits of such commitment.

Sian Chattle and Charlie Powell, Lindengate’s Co-Founders, both say, “We still have a long way to go before we are sustainable, but we have been amazed by the local support that we have received that has enabled us to get this far with this much needed resource. We can do so much to help people with mental health needs in our area.”

Our growing programme for the year includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers

and bedding plants and we have a number of plans to start work on a few of the many types of garden designs and habitats that we hope to include on the site.

Of particular interest are the 11 varieties of potato that we are trialling in partnership with Wyevale Garden Centre. We will be looking at each one’s yield and quality of tuber and then we will be doing a taste and texture trial involving the public in the garden centre and at Lindengate’s site.

One of the habitats that we will be developing this year is under the guidance of the Upper Thames Branch for Butterfly Conservation to encourage the nationally scarce Striped Lychnis Moth to join us. Dark Mullein is their caterpillars’ food plant and it has become increasingly rare in recent years. Lindengate is growing Dark Mullein from seed to introduce to the site and send to other sites.

We are also working hard to encourage our feathered friends on to the site and have

helped support the local Wendover Mars Cubs achieve one of their badges. They worked hard making an amazing array of bird feeders and boxes from recycled wood. They then spent a rather rainy and windy Saturday morning in February with some of our volunteers and their leaders on site putting some of them up.

If you would like to follow the progress of our potatoes and Dark Mullein and all the other exciting activities that we shall be doing, then please go to our Facebook page www.facebook.com/lindengategardening.

Wendover Marches On!March was an up and down month for Wendover FC 1st Team, with the “Black & Golds” winning 3 and unexpectedly losing 2 of their 5 games played. This resulted in an exit from one of the cups, but sustained their push for the title at the top of the league thanks to a quick fire season double over Bedgrove Dynamos beating them 5-2 away and 6-0 emphatically at home.

Our Top Scorer for the month was Wendover’s new goal machine Jamie Spurden with 7 goals, closely followed by Tom Sheppard on 4 with 1st goals of the

season for Jack Thomson, Andy Tallyn and skipper Tom Newman. Tristan Nicholls was March’s star performer with some fantastic displays.

Wendover Arm TrustRecently there has been growing concern over our ability to keep our restoration going purely on a volunteer basis. We are looking at the possibility of using contract assistance with some of the work.

We are also asking volunteers to nominate days they are able to assist so that there are six on site every day and not turn up unannounced to find there is no work for them. Thank you.

Wendover Village Cup 2015The 2015 Wendover Village Cup competition is returning to the Witchell Cricket Ground for most weekend afternoons from late April through to the Final on 19 July at the Witchell. The competition is our local family friendly rival competition to the IPL 20/20 with teams of 8 players made up of local teams often scoring in excess of 300 runs from 12 “8 ball” overs. The teams include the Wellhead Old Boys, Dragons, Jolly Boys, Tradesmen, Rugby Dads, Fat Dads, WFC Young Guns, Pretenders, Sharks and Angels.

Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in entering team for this season or come down to the Witchell to enjoy a feast of cricket.

Wendover Bowls ClubThe indoor season “Short Mat” ends this month and we then revert to playing outdoors. Whatever the weather brings (yes we are daft enough to play in the rain), it is still a good way to spend time outdoors.

We have a full season of fixtures against other Clubs which are the “Friendly” fixtures and are played at Home and Away generally on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with a light meal after the match where we get to know other Club members. They are always played in good atmosphere and there are no recriminations if a “rink” loses. They just have to help tidy up!!

We will also be putting teams into various County and other Competitions. Please watch this space!

We have our Pre Season Dinner in the Club House on Friday 17 April which is the day before our first outdoor match against Kitcheners Bowls Club. This club comes from Berkhamsted and have been, for a number of years, our first competitive match.

Our Club is pleased to announce that on April 11 two of our members are celebrating their ”DIAMOND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY” in the Club House. They are both keen bowlers and play on a regular basis both indoors and out. Many Congratulations!

The Games Night went very well with 54 Members attending. A good evening was had by all.

If you want more information about the Club, which is located in Dobbins Lane just behind the Tennis Club, please come along and meet some members. We are normally open during the Summer Season on most days and at the weekend unless we are “playing away”. To check, just contact Brian Wheeler

Wendover Cricket ClubThe cricket season is nearly upon us and junior and senior training starts outside in mid-April. Meanwhile, Wendover Cricket Club is preparing to celebrate its 150th Year! It’s a milestone year for our Cricket Club and, whilst HS2 continues to cast its long shadow over the Ellesborough Road ground, the Club is casting aside such concerns in its determination to celebrate 150 Years of play. Events are being planned for Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September so watch out for news on that next month! There will be a Members evening event, as well as day and evening events to which all are welcome, so save those dates!

Leagues have been entered for all ages from 9 to 17, as well as the senior teams in the Mid Bucks League, with the first games starting on 25 & 26 April. Some age groups are already at maximum capacity, but all

The Whitchurch Morris Men – Morris On TVThe call for all dancers to The Royal Standard of England at Forty Green never came as the Grand Union Morris found they could cover it. After some negotiation, what was originally envisaged as a large gathering became a much reduced affair. Still you will be able to see it when the Hairy Bikers present “Pubs That Built England” at some time in the future.

I have had feedback from a reader who would prefer that her husband didn’t get the urge to join us as all we seem to do is eat and drink. No, no, no. The food is a scientifically balanced diet specially developed to enhance the endurance of the athletic dancer and the ale helps balance the body’s electrolytes

following extensive physical exertion. You have to be fit to dance.

Meanwhile someone suggested that Morris Men always seem to be associated with beer and pubs. Let’s not forget that in Europe you couldn’t drink the water. Remember only drinking bottled water on holiday and cleaning your teeth with the local champagne? The only way to purify water and make it fit to drink in Europe was through the fermentation process. Even during the Second World War, many farms only provided cider or perry for the labourers and many households still used grey water. Drinking potable water is a very recent practice and besides, have you seen what fish do in it? It is unlikely that we’ll ever know what dances they performed to celebrate the end of the War of the Roses but we know what they drank. It’s a tradition of water purification that many sides will continue to support.

Advance Decisions About Your Future Care Sometimes a person becomes incapacitated by injury or illness, such as a stroke or dementia, to the extent that they are not capable of making decisions about their medical care themselves. If this happens then

the medical team caring for you will decide what treatment you should have based on what they believe to be your best interests, unless you have previously made an advance decision (or advanced directive) explaining what medical treatment you want in particular circumstances, or you have appointed a lasting power of attorney to make decisions for you about your health and welfare.

You can use an advance decision to refuse any treatment, including life-sustaining treatment. The term “living will” is sometimes used, but this is misleading in that, unlike a will, it does not deal with money or property. An advance decision is legally binding in England. To complete it you need at least one person to witness it, and it is recommended that ask your GP to sign to confirm your capacity. We will keep a copy in your medical records and flag up that you have an advanced decision. For more information see the NHS Choices website or visit compassionindying.org.uk.

If you have a serious illness and wish to discuss your future care, please make an appointment to discuss this with your GP.

Help With Losing WeightIf you are overweight or obese you may be eligible for a free 12 week subscription to Weight Watchers or Slimming World, funded by Bucks County Council. If you would like further information please discuss with your GP or a nurse. We will need to know your current height and weight to assess whether you qualify.

Changes To Our Usual Opening HoursWe will be closed for the Easter Holiday from 6.30pm on Thursday 2nd April to 7.30am on Tuesday 7th April 2015. Please note that we will NOT open on Saturday 4th April. On Tuesday 14th April we will close at 1pm for staff training. Lindengate Sausage Launchedby Annie Shutt for Loaf and LarderWhen Charlie Powell first came to introduce herself to me at our Loaf & Larder Farm Shop at Wyevale Garden Centre, I sensed her quiet strength and commitment from our first handshake. I liked her. She gave me a brief history of Lindengate’s humble beginnings and how she and Sian Chattle had decided to realise a mutual dream. They had gathered around them an ever growing team of exceptional volunteers to realise its birth, negotiate its hurdles, and benefit from its countless blessings as part of Wendover’s strong community spirit infused by residents and businesses alike.

Having a love for the outdoors myself and knowing how uplifting working with nature can be alongside the added desire for Loaf & Larder to become an active part of Wendover’s community, I immediately saw a fantastic opportunity for each of us to help one another.

We would help them with their much needed fundraising, and in return, they could supply us with fresh herbs and vegetables for the production of Loaf & Larder’s increasing deli range as well as introduce the local community to our friendly and enthusiastic staff.

Working alongside one of Loaf & Larder’s esteemed butchers, the volunteers of Lindengate have put their taste buds to the test and the new Lindengate Sausage has been created. We are very excited to announce that proceeds from every sale will be going directly into our Lindengate fund. The delicious sausage was launched on 14 March and we hope to serve hundreds of Lindengate sausages to hungry customers so do come along and try them!

Italy – The South…with No2 Pound StFollowing on from the success of February’s Sicily feature, in April we will be featuring the wines of southern Italy. A ferry ride across from last month’s featured region, you come across the strange region of Basilicata. A mainly uninhabited inland area but bordered by two seas, its main wine producing area lies in the shadows of the extinct volcano Mount Vulture. This is known as the “Barolo of the South” for good reason, and is responsible for two wonderful wines, Aglianico del Vulture and Taurasi; the

latter coming from a region to the north of Basilicata, called Campania. This is the region around Naples and beyond, and is known for producing some of the country’s finest white wines such as the wonderful Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. Finally, we hop across to Italy’s heel, where you find Puglia, known as the breadbasket of Italy for its amazing agricultural produce, wheat, pasta, olives, vegetables, and of course grapes!! Loaf & Larder Food Festival Loaf & Larder, the Farm Shop, Deli & Butcher in the Worlds End Garden Centre, is to host its first mini Food Festival on Saturday 28 March.

They’ve invited many of their artisan producers to come and host special tastings and demonstrations of their particular craft. From sausage making to cheese tasting to pie making the smells, sounds and flavours are certain to assail the senses. Chiltern Brewery will be on hand offering samples of their range of locally brewed ales in addition to chocolate, game, cheese, preserves, chutney, bread, wine and cider tastings – in fact just about the whole range of produce will be available to taste with many of the producers on hand to chat about how and what they do.

Loaf & Larder was especially designed and created with garden centres in mind by Olives Et Al, the Dorset based pioneers of speciality food, and according to Giles Henschel, Co Founder of Olives Et Al, it is more like a “restaurant without tables”.

Loaf & Larder focus on sourcing many of their ingredients from the best local suppliers and then using them to create ranges of cakes, pies, salads, quiches, biscuits and breads all made on site fresh every day. There’s also a fully loaded cheese counter with local, regional and international cheeses and a full butchery which sources its meat and game both locally and from nationally renowned artisans and specialists. You will also find a range of organic wine along with the full Olives Et Al range of Olives, Dressings, Nuts, Sauce and Snacks. These local ingredients get used in dishes that are created on site every day, creating an ever changing menu that flows with the seasons and reflects Loaf & Larder’s location within the Worlds End Garden Centre.

Annie Shutt, Loaf & Larder Manager and the driving force behind the Food Festival said, “Seeing Loaf & Larder develop in the few short months since we opened has been hugely inspiring and we’ve been delighted by the response of customers to the idea of hosting this mini Food Festival.” See advert page 4.

Jean Palmer was born in 1928 near Buckingham and spent her early years in North Bucks, an area she loved deeply. She attended the Aylesbury Grammar School and thereafter trained as a draughtsman in local government.

Jean met her husband Gerald in 1952 through a work colleague in the Aylesbury office where they both worked. In July 1957, they came to live in Weston Turville and were overjoyed to find a house next door to a farmyard as both she and her husband were raised in village communities and it felt like they were coming home.

Jean and Gerald had two children, Mark born in 1960 and Timothy born in 1964. When Jean left work to start the family she missed the social contact at work, so she went on to join every committee in the village that would have her as she felt she should contribute to the local community she was so proud to live in.

Over the years Jean was an ardent fundraiser for the village recreation areas, and was instrumental in raising funds for the provision of sports equipment. She was also a key campaigner in getting the tennis courts built for the local Youth Club to use and her enthusiasm to inspire others was always on show. Jean was also one of the founding members of the Weston Turville Parent-Participating Playgroup, something she was extremely proud of, as this was a first in Buckinghamshire at the time.

The Weston Turville Village Pantomime starring the “Weston Turville Players” was launched in the 1990s and went on to perform for 15 years. Jean wrote all the light hearted and rhyming scripts and the

children in the village were offered parts if they showed any interest. This of course ensured there were full houses every year with a favourite Dame making his annual appearances – something all the villagers looked forward to, whilst driving Jean around the bend as he changed the script whenever he forgot his lines.

Jean enjoyed handicrafts immensely and went on to set up the Annual Village Craft fair held at the Village Hall. This brought many people from outside of the village and many of the exhibitors and attendees went on to become lifelong friends with Jean. Jean was also a very competent gardener and flower arranger, and she organised the flower displays at the Village Church for many years. She would always be disappointed if she did not win at least 3 rosettes at the annual horticultural show which she always entered into with great enthusiasm.

In her later years her confinement to a wheelchair never dampened her joy of life, in fact she did everything she ever wanted to do, but people just had to mind their feet as she would often roll over them in her keenness to carry on as normal. She was always surrounded by cats, and even a beloved dog at one stage, which all rode around on her wheelchair to avoid being run over themselves.

Jean’s sons Mark and Timothy and her grandchildren Hayley and Richard survive her and are immensely proud of all she achieved in her very active and happy life. She will be missed by the family and all that knew her and the village will find it hard to replace such a dominant player in their local community.

Here is the main text of Kim’s tribute to Dolly Saville, her Nan, delivered in St Mary’s, Wendover, on Thursday 12 March.

From simple beginnings, born to Daisy and Thomas Oakley, Dolly’s father, who was one of the co-founder member of the Royal Naval Association, instilled in her the principle value of doing for others and gave her the courage to always stand firm for what she believed in. Gracious and generous throughout her life, Nan guided and inspired the family, teaching each generation in turn her values which at times were set pretty steep.

As a Mother, she would often go without to ensure her children Anne and Roland, did not. As a Nan, I couldn’t wait to spend all my school holidays with her, even learning to ride my first two-wheeler in the Red Lion car park while she watched on from the dining room window. Nan meant everything to me, she was my world. As Great Nanna, she was there with advice and support, and as a Great-Great Nanna, although all too short in time, Darcey

spent many happy days with her.

As Darcey grows up and new generations join the family, we will tell them just

how inspirational and wonderful you were Nan, ensuring they too, walk in your footsteps.

Nan also gave us some real comic gems like when she first flew out to South Africa to visit us and when asked how the flight was, replied, “Flight was fine, a bit stuffy in the plane, you’d think they’d have opened a window.” And when she at 91, helped a 70 year old across the road and then came into Agora saying, “Did you see that little old dear, bless her.” Or when she was given a jar of marmalade with a frilly gingham top remarking, “Fancy giving me this, its something you’d give an old age pensioner.”

But we all know her best from her time at the Red Lion as do the thousands of regulars she

served and quite a few celebrities too. From Dame Margot Fontaine to Piers Brosnan, Nan loved being part of the crowd and enjoyed a tot of whisky with many. Those old enough will remember her calling, “Time ladies and gentleman, its time to go home to your feather beds” and then she would stay on late to party with staff members.

Her time at the Red Lion was special and her one hundredth birthday, who many here today shared with her, was a fitting celebration of her life and as much as she would have loved to have made her one hundred and first birthday (giving all of us a real problem on how to top that), sadly it was not to be.

So Nan..... the almighty landlord now calls time on you to go home to your feather bed, you’ll get your legs and freedom back and also, a new pair of wings. An era has ended, but I can honestly say that having you as my grandmother, is one of the best things in my life. In our hearts you will always be irreplaceable and unforgettable.

Dolly SavilleTribute

Local FaceRoger was born and brought up in Hendon, NW London and educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in Hampstead and Elstree. Are there any other Old Habs out there?

Aged seven, Roger joined his Parish Church choir, where he met Susan (Local Face December 2011) some years later. They married there before moving to Tring. His mother, a trained tailor, made vestments and mitres for many bishops and cathedrals, including the new Coventry Cathedral, where some of her work is still on display.

After four years in Tring, Roger and Susan moved to their present house in Aylesbury, where they have been for 43 years bringing up their two children who have now married producing four grandchildren, aged three to nineteen, all with strong musical talent.

For twenty years, they attended St Mary’s Church, Aylesbury, where Roger was in the choir and was Parish Treasurer for twelve years. Susan was a server. They then moved to St Mary’s, Weston Turville, where Roger is again in the choir and Susan is Director of Music and assistant priest. It is at Weston Turville Church where Roger has been organising concerts and other fund raising events which he regularly advertises in Wendover News and with the familiar posters in Wendover shops and elsewhere.

St Mary’s Weston Turville has great plans for an extension to the Church, providing a meeting room for community events, with wheelchair-accessible toilets and baby-changing facilities. The PCC committee which is spearheading this project is called SWIFT (St Mary’s Weston Turville Improving Facilities Team). Roger was a founder member of this team and is the treasurer. The

architect hopes to apply for outline planning permission soon. Funds are coming in but the campaign will be intensified shortly. Roger is hoping for support from individuals and local businesses as well as grants. Roger’s picture shows him sporting a beard which was grown as part of a fund raising competition in 2013, raising over £4,000 for SWIFT.

Roger has been a churchwarden for a year and finds that the SWIFT project and the ongoing responsibility for maintenance and repair of the existing Church building are closely inter-related. He was also a governor of Weston Turville School for eight years.

Retiring after a career as an accountant and auditor, mainly in the public sector, Roger says he has never been so busy, but is enjoying his varied lifestyle. In his “spare time”, as well as many pleasurable family activities, Roger is a member of Wingrave Singers and Kingsbury Singers, which was formed in Aylesbury but has members all over the country. With both choirs, Roger sings in various cathedrals when the resident choirs are on holiday. He has notched up some thirty different cathedrals so far and these breaks, weekends or longer, are a wonderful way of experiencing these beautiful buildings and the lovely cities where they are situated as well as keeping up the centuries-old tradition of religious music in this country.

If you would like information about SWIFT, or can offer your support, please contact Roger on [email protected] or 01296 424982. The SWIFT website is at www.swift-wt.co.uk. You can donate on-line at www.make-a-donation.org.

View from the ChairThe Government Select committee are hearing Petitions against HS2 and I had the experience of going to Parliament to hear Petitions from residents of the Colne Valley.

It is expected that Petitions from Wendover could be heard during the Summer/Autumn onwards. However anything can happen and timetables change. The key thing I learnt was preparation, preparation, preparation. Use your best skills but prepare well. It was obvious to me that if MPs on the Select Committee get bored they will terminate or shorten your presentation. The resource that you are up against could be quite daunting – fleets of HS2 folk, MPs, admin staff, IT staff etc, etc, who are all paid to do their job against little old you, a humble individual untrained in presentations and merely a volunteer in these matters. It is therefore key that you prepare and practice your argument and your performance.

Following a suggestion by a petitioner to the POP Group, it was agreed by representatives

from Wendover PC, Halton PC, Wendover Society and Wendover HS2 that a series of events would be held to gauge what Petitioners needs might be. Several sessions have been planned with this aim in mind – the first, on 14 March, at Halton Village Hall was very well attended.

This is likely to be the last Chairman’s ‘View’ prior to the Parish Council Elections so I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank those who have supported me through thick and thin. You know who you are!
