First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-9

Deacon 1 Hear the vision of the Prophet Isaiah.

Reader ! On this mountain

the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples

A feast of rich food

A feast of well-aged wines.

God will take away the disgrace of the peoples

from all the earth,

and wipe away the tears from all faces.

On this mountain God will destroy

the burial shroud that covers the nations

and swallow up death forever.

This is our God, whom we have waited for;

God will come and will save us.

Tomorrow we will fast, but today we feast. So we

thank you for the abundance of gifts you shower upon

us. We thank you for one another. We thank you for

the gifts we share together. As our feasting fills us with

gratitude so may our fasting make a place in us for

deep desire to hear the cry of the poor. We ask with

confidence in the name of Jesus the Lord.

ALL: ! AMEN.

Reading: Luke 14:7 – 14

CUE after 20 minutes of dinner conversation:

Deacon 2 shakes sistrum

Hear a reading from the Gospel of Mark

Reader When he noticed how the guests picked the places of

honor at the table, he told them this parable: "When

someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take

the place of honor, for a person more distinguished

than you may have been invited. If so, the host who

invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this

man your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take

the least important place. But when you are invited,

take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he

will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.'

Then you will be honored in the presence of all your

fellow guests. For everyone who exalts himself will be

humbled, and he who humbles himself will be

exalted."

Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon

or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or

relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may

invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when

you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the

lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they

cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the

resurrection of the righteous."

Presider observes one minute silence, then rings hand bell.

Cleanup & Dismissal

Deacon 1 The gospels tell that after dinner, Jesus and his

disciples sang a hymn together. So we will sing a

psalm as they did, and clean our dining room as

tradition requires.

Deacon 2 • Please bring food dishes to the serving tables.

• Put trash into the garbage bags that are coming

around

• Load folding chairs onto dollies under the BEAR

• Pile tablecloths on the table under the HORSE

• Fold up tables and roll them into the room under the

TIGER.

• We’ll save sweeping and kitchen clean-up until

AFTER the final prayer.

• Once the tables and chairs are all cleared out, we’ll

need a few people to replace the altar table.

Everybody join in singing as you work – like a sea

chanty – to focus energy on work. Save your

conversation for later. When we’re finished

straightening this room, EVERYONE will gather here

around the altar table for the final prayer.

Cantor leads alleluia refrain and sing verses from Psalm 118 (and

Psalm 117 if needed)

PART ONE

1 We give thanks to you O Lord for' you' are gracious:

and your love en'dures for'ever.

2 Let the house of Israel say:

God's love en'dures for'ever.

3 Let the house of Aaron' say:

God's love en'dures for'ever.

4 Let those who fear the' Lord' say:

God's' love en'dures for'ever.'

5 I called to you O Lord in' my distress:

and your' answer • was to' set me' free.

6 The Lord is on my side, I' will not' fear:

for what can human' power' do to me?

7 The Lord is on my' side to' help me:

I will' triumph' over • my' enemies.

8 It is better to take refuge' in the' Lord:

than to' put • any' trust in' people.

9 It is better to take refuge' in the' Lord:

than to' put • any' trust in' princes.

10 The nations' all sur'rounded me:

but in the name of the Lord I drove them' back.

11 They hemmed me in,

they hemmed me in on every' side:

but in the name of the' Lord I drove them back.

12 They swarmed around me like bees,

they blazed like fire a'mong the' thorns:

but in the name of the' Lord I drove them back.

Maundy Tuesday 2005 ——17 of 18 —— rev. 7/12/07

13 They pressed hard upon me, so that I' almost' fell:

but the' Lord' came • to my'help.

14 The Lord is my strength and' my de'fence:

and has become' my deliverer.

15 There are shouts of joy and deliverance in the' tents •

of the' righteous:

the right hand of the' Lord does' mighty' things.

16 The right hand of the Lord raises' up:

the right hand of the' Lord does' mighty things.

17 I shall not die but'live:

and pro'claim • what the Lord has' done.

18 The Lord in'deed has' punished me:

but did not' give me' over • to' death.

PART TWO

19 Open to me the' gates • of the' temple:

that I may enter and give' thanks' to the' Lord.

20 This is the' gate of the Lord:

through which the' righteous • shall enter.

21 I will thank you because' you have' answered me:

and you have be'come' my de'liverer.

22 The stone which the' builders • re'jected:

has be'come the' head • of the' corner.

23 This is the' Lord's' doing:

and it is marvellous' in our' eyes.

24 This is the day which the' Lord has' made:

let us re'joice' and be' glad in it.

25 Save us O' Lord we' pray:

Lord we' pray • you to' give us • suc'cess.

26 Blessed is the one who comes in the' name • of the'

Lord:

27 The Lord is God. and has' given • us light:

with branches in your hands.

Go forward in procession up to the' horns'

Presider !O Lord, support us all the day long, until he

our work is done. Then in your mercy, grant us a safe

Jesus Christ our Lord.

AMEN.
