Lacrosse tourney runs smoothly By Kevin [email protected]

The Dick’s Sporting GoodsTournament of Championspresented by Pasco County, which wrapped up on Dec. 31,drew favorable reviews fromcoaches, spectators and ven-dors.

The event featured 73 pre-collegiate lacrosse teams from15 states, including Canada, which made the trek to WesleyChapel to compete in thethree-day tournament.

The warm Florida weatherwas a pleasant feature formany out-of-state spectators who spent sev-eral hours outdoors, watching lacrosse atthe Wesley Chapel District Park.

“It’s a good time of the year,” said RodHidusky, who drove from Roanoke, Virginia,to see the tournament. “The weather’s beenreal good. It’s a little chillier up there (inRoanoke).”

While Hidusky acknowledged, “parkingwas tough,” he said the event was well or-ganized.

“I think the fields are really good,”Hidusky said, noting the fields are markedand well maintained. “They’ve got some ven-dors and stuff, so it’s a pretty good time.”

Todd Anderson of Bucks County,Pennsylvania, said the experience is greatfor youth lacrosse players being able tocompete against opponents they’ve neverseen before.

“It’s pretty neat for them being able toplay kids from all over the country,” saidAnderson, who supported the BucksCounty Select 2020 lacrosse team. “We’veplayed (teams from) Florida, Virginia andMinnesota. It’s been great having theseteams from all over the place.”

In between games, lacrosse players andtheir families relaxed and tailgated undertents set up throughout the park. Others vis-ited the playgrounds or checked outvendors selling lacrosse gear and apparel.

Evan and Tara Jones, who invented alacrosse ball resurfacer, traveled from

Roswell, Georgia, to sell their goods at thetournament.

The idea for their product, “TheBallscratcher,” was created about four yearsago when they grew tired of purchasingnew lacrosse balls every few weeks for theirtwo sons.

The Jones family, who travels to about 30lacrosse tournaments across the countryevery year, enjoy the convenience and setupat Wesley Chapel.

“Having all the fields in one location iswonderful for vendors and also for families,so they’re not having to drive in betweenschools or parks and stuff,” Tara said. “I knowfrom traveling across the country doingthis, the setup of having everything underone location helps tremendously. We loveit.”

Evan said the more a lacrosse ball isused, the more stains it gets, causing it tolose its grip and feel.

“The kids hate ’em because they shootdifferently,” Evan said about discoloredlacrosse balls. “Imagine if you had nothingbut dead tennis balls that you’re practicingwith, and you went out in a game and got a(new) one.”

The invention, which they introduced atthe tournament three years ago, ended upcutting the Jones family’s spending onlacrosse balls in half.

“We spent about 50 bucks a month onballs, and so we were tired of spending it,”

Tara said. “For coaches, a case of balls isabout $180. That’s money that could beused for fields, coaches, uniforms and equip-ment.”

Having a large number of lacrosse teamsand families at the tournament has allowedthe Joneses to get beneficial exposure fortheir product.

“People like to touch, feel and see it, es-pecially with a lot of Internet stores thatcarry our product,” Tara said. “They don’t be-lieve it until they see (it).”

In addition to fans and vendors, theTournament of Champions was convenientfor coaches.

From a coach’s perspective, the tourna-ment’s schedule was easier to maneuverafter event organizers introduced a mobileapp that provided updates on scores, oppo-nents and game locations in real-time.

“It’s honestly one of the cleanest tourna-ments I’ve been to,” said Pasco Lions RisingStars head coach Chris Burke. “They haveyour entire schedule, and they have yourstandings. …I was able to break down thestandings and go, ‘OK, we’re either playingthese guys or those guys the next game be-cause it’s the playoffs,’ and that was becauseof the mobile app.

“The information that you’re getting is alot better, rather than running and trying tofind a guy in a green shirt, saying, ‘Hey, Ineed to know where we’re (playing) at.’ Iwas able to do that on my phone on the

sidelines and tell (players) immediately.”The tournament’s competition level im-

pressed Burke, who’s also a junior lacrosseplayer at St. Leo University. Catching Burke’seye in particular was the unique style ofplay from Canadian youth lacrosse teams.

Canadian teams typically play box, or in-door lacrosse with six players, as opposedto playing outdoor field hockey with 10players, making it an adjustment for bothCanadian teams and their opponents.

“Canadians usually play more of a box as-pect, so they’re really good in closequarters,” Burke explained. “They’re stickhandling is really good. Most of the timethey don’t switch hands. …They’re impres-sive, because in a box environment, it’s asmaller field, so they have to be aggressive;they have to always be sprinting. It’s really adifferent type of athlete rather than field, you’ve got a bigger environment, and you’vegot guys going all over the place.

“Whenever you get a very diverse envi-ronment like this, you’re going to get better.”

In between preparing for games andcoaching, the tournament also gave Burkethe opportunity to try to lure some playersto join the Saint Leo’s lacrosse program.

“I saw a couple of kids, and I texted mycoach; I was like, ‘Hey, you’ve got to behere,’” Burke said. “I’ve been meeting withkids the whole time, saying, ‘Hey, where areyou playing? You’re a senior, non-commit-ted? I’ve got a home for you.’ ”

Cool Deals on Hearing Aids!

By Whitney C. ElmoreSpecial to The Laker/Lutz News

The peaches are in bloom, the aroma offlowers fills the air – spring has sprung.

But, how can that be?It’s only January. The calendar says it’s winter, but our gar-

dens are acting like it is spring. With temperatures 15 degrees to 20 de-

grees above average for this time of theyear, it’s easy for plants, and for us, too, to betricked by Mother Nature.

It’s all due to this unusually strong ElNiño pattern.

Warm soil and air temperatures haveconned normally fall blooming plants intoblooming longer. And, spring bloomingplants are flowering way before normal.

Flowerbeds are jumping, cold seasonveggies are lagging, and trees are buddingout.

While it’s not necessarily “good” forplants, most will endure — and in the longrun they won’t be harmed.

However, the consequences of a mild tonon-existent winter for our plants will mostlikely result in less than vibrant color dis-plays and reduced flowering in spring andsummer.

Plants are using their stored food re-serves to bloom now, which will causethem to be sluggish later on. But, plants willrestore and replenish food reserves in sum-mer, so we should experience a morenormal blooming pattern starting next fall— if the weather cooperates.

But, just because the plants will mostlikely survive to bloom again doesn’t meanwe shouldn’t help them along.

Since the plants are currently very ac-tive, keep watering, if necessary, as youwould in the spring.

Since we are in the dry season, activelygrowing plants will need supplemental irri-gation.

Don’t rush to prune out-of-season plants.Pruning triggers all sorts of hormonal re-sponses, which tell plants to grow.

Telling a plant to grow succulent andvulnerable tissue, when some sort of winterweather in inevitable, is a sure way to harmtender tissue when that cold finally arrives.

The same goes for fertilizers – don’t fer-tilize, which also stimulates growth.

All we can do is gently help themthrough the unusual weather and preparethem for summer.

For now, enjoy the warm temperatureswhile they last.

COURTESY OF WHITNEY ELMORE, PASCO COUNTY EXTENSION DIRECTORThis photograph of a cluster of blooming pink azaleas was taken in December. Normally, they do not flower until March or April.

It will be a time to see old friends and toreminisce, members of the anniversary com-mittee said.

Hazel Nalls has accumulated scores ofmemories since she joined the churcharound 1941.

Back then, Fletcher Avenue was still a dirtroad, she said.

“I accepted Christ here, in ’42. I was bap-tized in Lake Keen,” Nalls said.

She was married at the church in 1954,and since then, her son has been marriedthere, too. The third generation of her family— her grandson — is planning to be marriedat the church in August.

Fletcher keeps a scrapbook containingphotographs and other memorabilia from thechurch through the years.

Many of the photos have burnt edges. They are the photos she was able to retrieveafter her house burned down.

They help tell the story of the church. There are images of the old wooden

church, of church picnics, of the church

choir, of baptisms in Lake Keen, of weddingsand other celebrations.

“This church was built on prayer,” Nallssaid.

“The men went back here behind thechurch in the woods and had prayer meet-ings on Tuesday night and the women met inthe church,” she said.

The current church building was financedthrough the purchase of blocks, with churchmembers purchasing what they could everyfifth Sunday, Nalls and Fletcher recalled.

Newspaper clippings and church memo-rabilia also help detail the church’s history.

The church was built out of a mission ofthe Calvary Baptist Church of Tampa at 10thStreet and 36th Avenue, according to achurch document.

“On the second Sunday of May 1940, witha small building 30 by 30 feet and only halfof this floored, no windows or doors, weheld our first service here in the church,” ac-cording to one account. The church had 45charter members.

Other missions sprang out the church, one in Odessa in 1942, which became achurch in 1943. And, another at Amelia begannear Darby in 1943, which became a churchin 1944.

Senior Pastor Charles White has led thechurch since 1990.

It now has about 400 regular worshiperswho come primarily from Lutz and Land O’Lakes. But, its scores of ministries reachacross the region, the country and the world, current church members said.

It has more than 30 people trained to re-spond to natural disasters, hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms and flooding.

Its other ministries have helped to buildchurches in Oklahoma, North Dakota andSouth Dakota, to start schools in Haiti and tohelp launch a seminary in Haiti, too.

Closer to home, church ministries feedthe homeless, make car repairs, do home re-pairs and visit prisoners.

Church member Ron Waters said hethinks people are drawn to First BaptistChurch of Lutz by its “disorganized chaos” atthe start of each service. “Everybody gets upand hugs everybody, and greets everybodyand shakes hands with visitors,” he said, adding that visitors seem to find that warmthinviting.

Jim Hall, chairman of the 75th anniversarycommittee, said he believes “the presence ofthe Holy Spirit” attracts people to the church.

“People can feel it,” he said.Fletcher said the church has a welcoming

atmosphere: “It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re welcome at First Baptist Church ofLutz.”

Paul Vahue, who joined the church’s stafffive years ago, said he felt drawn by thechurch’s warmth when he arrived fromAtlanta 20 years ago.

“It’s that feeling of love and generosity, and kindness,” said Vahue, associate pastor ofadministration for the church.

And now, three-quarters of a centurysince the church’s inception, members saidthey’re delighted to play a role in connectingpeople to God.

“We’re very mission-minded, in terms ofwhat we do as a church here,” Hall said.

“There’s over 30 lay-led ministries at thechurch that minister to folks, locally and glob-ally,” Vahue said.

McShaffrey said, adding that homebuyersknew they would be living next to I-75.

The community could pay for a wall pri-vately, if that is what residents want,McShaffrey said.

The project’s goal is to make drivingsafer by adding more lanes, and improvingaccess on and off ramps. It is one of a seriesof interchange projects statewide along I-75.

“These are capacity projects,” saidMcShaffrey.

On average, about 50,000 vehicles perday travel on I-75, south of State Road 52, ac-cording to state transportation data from2014.

Estimates for 2020 peg traffic along thissegment an average of 56,000 a day.

The project has been on the state roaddepartment’s radar for more than a decade. It has met with hurdles along the way, in-cluding a lawsuit filed by HillcrestProperties against Pasco County in 2010. Asettlement eventually resolved issues relatedto a right of way purchase, and cleared theway for construction.

Hart has a file of material he has collect-ed over nearly three years of protests byhimself and, at times, hundreds of area resi-dents who attended a public hearing in2012.

His letters, emails and phone calls seekingrelief have gone to U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, Gov.Rick Scott, State Reps. Will Weatherford, JohnLegg and Danny Burgess. He has reached outto Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader, and former State Rep. Jim Norman.

Hart disputes the road department’ssound study.

“We did our own soundings,” he said. The results showed noise levels in some

areas reached 94 decibels, Hart said.According to data from Purdue

University, that equates to a jet taking off, ajackhammer, power mower or motorcyclewithin 25 feet.

Hart paid thousands of dollars to installdouble-pane windows that muffle somenoises. He also said he repaired a crack inhis kitchen ceiling which he attributes toheavy truck traffic.

He also noted a crack in the outer wall ofhis neighbor’s house, and a chipped win-dow and similar crack on his house’sexterior.

“Every now and then, you can feel vibra-tions when a truck goes by,” Hart said.

He has hosted tours of Tampa Golf &Country Club for representatives of arealawmakers. He got sympathy but, so far, Hartsaid nothing has happened.

And, he won’t give up.“I know what the danger is out there,” he

said.

cility uses and upgrades, and outdoor recre-ation for the parks and trails.

“The master plan is really going to focuson the vision for our regional parks,” saidForest Turbiville, the county’s director ofconservation and land management. “Wewant the public to kind of tell us what theywould like to see. …What kind of services, activities and, potentially, facilities that theywould like to see in the future at each oneof our regional parks, as well as our ELAPP(Environmental Lands Acquisition andProtection Program) sites.”

For those unfamiliar, ELAPP is a volun-tary, non-regulatory program established forthe purpose of providing the process andfunding for identifying, acquiring and pro-tecting endangered or environmentallysensitive lands in Hillsborough County. It is acitizen-based program made up of volunteercommittees.

While the department has a few possibleideas for the plan, Turbiville said he first

wants to gather residents’ ideas and feed-back on improvements that can be made forthe regional parks and trails before organiz-ing the bulk of the plan.

“Really, we’re waiting for the feedbackfrom the public,” said Turbiville, whose de-partment manages over 78,000 acres of landacross regional parks and ELAPP sites. “We’regoing to have a survey that’s available thatwe’re going to hand out at the public meet-ing. It’s going to consist of a pretty extensivelist of questions centered around what peo-ple would like to see in the parks.

“The public input is going to drive theoutcome of the plan,” he said.

As an example, Turbiville said some peo-ple might suggest additional programmingat select park facilities, request the construc-tion of a new nature center or may want thecounty to build additional boardwalks onthe trails.

The master plan is expected to be com-pleted by the end of December 2016, so itsprograms’ budgets can be set in motion forthe 2017 fiscal year, and successive fiscalyears, Turbiville said.

Sunlake’s Hrenko sets national mark for shutoutsBy Kevin [email protected]

A lack of height isn’t an issue for SunlakeHigh soccer phenom Danny Hrenko.

The 5-foot-10 Hrenko, a senior goalkeep-er on the Sunlake Seahawks soccer team, achieved his 75th shutout on Dec. 14, set-ting a new national career record for theNFHS (National Federation of State HighSchool Associations).

“Once I broke the record, it was definite-ly a good feeling,” said Hrenko, who hasstarted as Sunlake’s varsity keeper since hisfreshman year. “I definitely felt a huge senseof accomplishment over my last four yearshere playing high school soccer.”

Sam Koleduk, head Seahawks soccercoach, put the accomplishment in context.

“You’ve got to look at the record, and ifyou put it into perspective, he’s going to av-erage over 20 shutouts a season, which isquite remarkable. I think it’s the biggest ac-complishment in probably Pasco Countysoccer history and, probably, in the state ofFlorida.”

Thomas Gallagher, who played at St.Louis Christian Brothers College HighSchool in Missouri, set the previous recordof 74 career shutouts in 1997.

Interestingly, Hrenko had “no idea” howclose to the shutout record he was beforethe start of the 2015 season, until someonegave him the heads-up, so he could keeptrack of the statistic.

“At the beginning of the season, I wasmade aware of it, and I started countingdown game after game, ‘only 12 more, only4 more,’ or whatever it was,” he said.

With a significant chunk of the season re-maining in both the regular season andpostseason, Hrenko has an opportunity toput the longstanding record even more outof reach for high school goalkeepers acrossthe nation.

“He’s not only going to break the record, but he’s probably going to shatter it by 10or 12 by the end of the season,” his headcoach said. “I think it’s pretty remarkable.”

Hrenko, who has played soccer since age 3,has only been a goalkeeper for the past sevenyears. The position change happened by acci-dent after trying it out one day in practice, andhe quickly realized he had a knack for it.

With additional instruction fromKoleduk and Tampa Rangers coach MikeConnell, Hrenko was able to take his goal-keeping production to new heights byimproving his footwork, leaping ability andoverall comprehension of the game.

“I got the proper training and the propercoaching, and everyone was behind me,”said Hrenko, who used to be a midfielder.“And, I definitely worked on being the best Icould be at my position.”

Also, not having an interest in playingother sports like football or baseball al-

lowed Hrenko to put all of his focus on soc-cer, where the additional experienceallowed him to develop his skillset evenmore.

“Playing so many games for high school, playing so many games for club and trainingall the time, it definitely has added anotherdynamic to my game,” said Hrenko, who hasplayed in more than 100 high school soccergames.

While his natural athleticism allows himto be a physical presence in front of the net,it’s Hrenko’s leadership skills on the fieldthat really stand out, whether it’s organizingthe team’s defensive structure or giving histeammates direction during a game.

“It’s like having a coach on the field,” saidKoleduk, praising his standout goalie. “He ba-sically instructs everybody where to be…like if a kid makes a couple of bad passes,he’ll get up to him and talk to him. And, hedoes it in a good manner. He’ll get up andexplain what his teammates are doingwrong, even during the game he’ll do it, andI think the kids appreciate that.”

Hrenko’s consistency and eye-poppingstatistics over the past four years havedrawn the interest of several Division II,Division III and NAIA (National Associationof Intercollegiate Athletics) college soccerprograms. However, he has yet to land a cov-eted Division I offer from a major university.

Both Hrenko and Koleduk agree that themain reason Division I programs haven’tcalled yet is because he’s less than 6-feettall.

“I’d say it’s 100 percent his height,”Koleduk explained. “And, in his case, it does-n’t matter. It’s almost like an NFLquarterback like Drew Brees or someonethat’s kind of shorter. There are certain guysthat can do it and some that can’t. But, forsome reason, a lot of the DI coaches wantsomebody that’s 6-foot-4 or 6-(foot)-5.”

“Not (being) tall enough is one of the

main things, but I don’t let that get medown,” Hrenko said about the absence ofDivision 1 offers. “I try to play to the best ofmy ability, and I try to showcase myself inthe best manner possible. I’ll just do my bestand hope for the best. That’s all I can do.”

While the soccer player hasn’t received aDivision 1 offer yet, Koleduk believes thereis still a good chance one will comeHrenko’s way, possibly by March or April.

“Soccer’s a weird thing for scholarships,”Koleduk explained. “Even for the best fieldplayers…so much of it is done last minutebecause it’s not like (college) football where(programs) just have tons of offers andscholarship money. So, for soccer it’s a littlebit more difficult; you’ve got to kind of waitit out a little bit.

“I think by the time it’s said and done, someone’s going to offer him that’s notscared of the height issue,” the coach said.

While Hrenko is proud of his individualaccomplishments, he said the “ultimategoal” this season is to win a state champi-onship with his team come February. TheSeahawks have reached the state semifinalsin the playoffs three consecutive years, falling short to the eventual state championon each occasion.

Coach Koleduk noted this year’sSeahawks squad doesn’t have quite as many“superstars” as the past years, but the play-ers have better cohesion and chemistry as aunit on the field.

“I think this year we’re maybe not asstrong as we were last year, but I think we’rea better team,” Koleduk said. “We play bettertogether.”

His senior captain agreed.“This year, I think we have more cama-

raderie, more teamwork, moreunderstanding of each other,” Hrenko said.“They’ve all been great squads over the pastfour years, but I think this squad has some-thing special.”

Buoyed by the performance of seniorBrianna Anderson, the Sunlake Seahawksgirls wrestling team has been on a tear oflate.

The Seahawks most recently placed first(out of six teams) in the Eastside GirlsWeightlifting Tournament at ZephyrhillsHigh School on Dec. 16.

Competing in the 183-pound weightclass, Anderson recorded a 160-pound benchpress, and maxed out a 195-pound clean-and-jerk for a 355 total, a tournament best.

While Anderson didn’t reach her goal of a225-pound clean-and-jerk, she still felt com-fortable with her performance.

“I was pretty confident, I guess,” she saidabout her results. “I knew if I (completed) allof my benches, and my first clean-and-jerk, Iwas going to get first (place).”

A relative newcomer to the sport,Anderson showed an interest in weightlift-ing as a high school sophomore, hoping tobecome more physically active to boost herathleticism for basketball and track.

She proved to be a natural in her firstyear competing, reaching the 2013-2014Florida High School Athletic Association(FHSAA) Girls Weightlifting Finals, placing19th overall in the 199-pound weight class.

As a junior last year, Anderson becamemore focused on improving her weightlift-ing totals. She altered her diet and spentmore time on proper weightlifting tech-nique, utilizing the expertise of Sunlake High

head coach Denise Garcia. The extra dedication paved the way for

Anderson to drop to a lower weight class(183) and enhance her strength enough toplace third in the 2014-2015 finals.

“The most improvement I would have tosay is clean-and-jerk as far as my techniqueand going up in my max,” Anderson said. “Myfavorite is the clean-and-jerk, so for thebench (press) I just try my hardest. My lowerbody is stronger than my upper body.”

Coach Garcia commended Anderson’swork ethic and believes she has a greatchance to win a state title in February.

“I’m hoping that she continues to go upand get that gap, because there’s other girlsthat are great up there, but with her passionand her wanting it, I know she’ll be on top.”

For Anderson and her Sunlake High team-mates, the overall goal is to perform better atthe FHSAA State Finals on Feb. 5 in

Kissimmee, where the group finished 12thlast year.

Before they can look ahead to the statechampionships, they must first compete in adistrict qualifier on Jan. 13 at Mitchell HighSchool in New Port Richey. The district meetwill determine qualifiers for the 2016 GirlsWeightlifting regional meet on Jan. 20 atCharlotte High School in Punta Gorda, which then determines who qualifies for thestate finals.

Garcia believes this year’s group, whichfeatures 22 members, is unique because oftheir overall “commitment and dedication.”She also noted the team’s camaraderie.

“They listen, and they’re coachable,” saidGarcia, who’s been coaching girl’s weightlift-ing at Sunlake High for 10 years. “They’realways working on their personal bests, andthere’s no drama.

“They’re all great kids.”

Coaching weightlifting is sometimes a lo-gistical challenge for Garcia, who was todivvy up one-on-one coaching among 22pupils.

Garcia is typically forced to organize herpractice schedule around other sports thegirls compete in, such as cheerleading andbasketball. Practices are usually held for twohours every weekday (and sometimes week-ends), with a focus on strengtheningdifferent muscle groups.

For girls that are novices to competitiveweightlifting, Coach Garcia said the key is tofocus on proper technique and not necessar-ily how much weight is being lifted.

“It’s always about technique first,” Garciasaid. Don’t worry about what the other per-son is doing. If 55 (pounds) is all you can do,it better be the best 55 (pounds) technically, because if not, you’re going to hurt yourself.”

While Coach Garcia’s team isn’t as largeas others she’s had in the past, she’s opti-mistic about the sport’s future growth, which she attributes in part to the populari-ty of CrossFit.

“The girls are getting more exposed to it,”she explained. “CrossFit is big, so it’s (transi-tioning girls) into weightlifting. It’s not just aboy’s sport. The girls are coming in anddoing it well.”

Anderson, who plans to join the U.S.Naval Academy after she graduates highschool, credits Coach Garcia for her markedimprovement over the past three seasons.

“She got me when I couldn’t even clean-and-jerk 100 pounds,” she said. “And now, Ican do 200.”
