PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: A look at the life of George Nelson (1876-1962)

George Nelson’s parents were Scandinavian. He and his brother Martin were born in Maine. His mother, Augusta, became a widow with three young children. Until her death, George and his mother lived together for more than 40 years in Sebastian, but returned to their home every year in Massachusetts. She died 1941 in Massachusetts. The U.S. Census of 1900-1920, lists George as a taxidermist at a college. In 1902, he was hired as a preparator of the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology until his retirement in 1946. He was known to be a botanist, zoologist, ornithologist, and an ardent photographer. Local history states that George arrived in Sebastian about 1901. However, he most likely did not arrive until 1909. For a short time, he lived with the Paul Kroegel family during part of the winter months. In 1910, he purchased land from Kroegel and built a home which still stands in Pelican’s Landing Resort on Indian River Drive

in Sebastian. During this time, he built several buildings to accommodate his glass slides and provide a place to process them. In 1952, he sold his home and moved to Vero Beach with his cousin, Helen Stewart. Nelson made several trips to Honduras to study the birds. At Harvard University, there exists a manuscript collection of his journals, photographs

and other papers from 1912-1962. George Nelson died in 1962 and his cousin donated all 3,200-plus glass slides and negatives to the then-private Indian River County Library. Today, they have all been digitized and can be viewed at the Main Library. Many of the flora and fauna glass slides were hand-painted by George Nelson. Included are pictures of Pelican Island and some of Paul Kroegel.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on before rooting for American Pharoah to complete horse racing’s Triple Crown:

• You have to wonder how long the Press Journal building on U.S. 1 will sit empty. Let’s make the over/under 5 years. I’d take “over” 5 years, as images of the Old Diesel Plant keep popping into my mind. By moving its office to downtown Vero Beach, the Press Journal – now owned by the Wisconsin-based Journal Media Group – has changed the dynamics of development on U.S. 1 between State Road 60 and 17th Street. There are now two huge vacant buildings – the former Albertsons grocery store is the other – in that three-block stretch. Albertsons closed in 2012. No question, the Press Journal building sits on a prime piece of real estate. The land (about 7.5 acres total) is on the market for $1.75 million.

Carl Sciara, with Dale Sorensen Real Estate, would take “under” 5 years. He’s the listing agent for the property, which is owned by E.W. Scripps Co. and Scripps Media. (The Press Journal was owned by E.W. Scripps until April 1.) In his description of the property for potential buyers, Sciara called it an “incredible redevelopment opportunity.” He says he has given several tours, and people have liked what they’ve seen. “It’s been pretty active,” he said. “We’ve already had a few offers.” With two parcels in the mix, there are multiple ways deal could go. The parcels could be sold separately, or together. Sciara said he’s currently talking with a group interested in buying both parcels. While I figured the new owner of the property would

want to demolish the Press Journal building and start anew, Sciara said that’s not necessarily the case. There’s a good chance the two-story building will be utilized in the development, he said. Billy Moss, with Lambert Commercial Real Estate, predicts the building will end up being demolished by the developer. As many of you know, I was a columnist for the Press Journal for more than 7 years and my wife still works for Treasure Coast Newspapers. It’s going to be a very complex deal. As Sciara put it, “layers of attorneys” will be involved. For that reason, I don’t see a deal being struck very quickly. So, I’ll stick with my “over” (5 years) prediction.• Some quick housekeeping: Thanks to Art Neuberger, Mark Mucher and Maureen Schwab for pointing out a few errors in last week’s “Rearview Mirror” feature on the Village Spires. Among other things, Royale Riviera (on 17th Street, east of A1A) is six stories high.

• The widening of U.S. 1 (to six lanes) from 53rd Street to County Road 510 isn’t going to happen for several years. Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works, said the project has not received any funding for construction. He said it’ll be at least 5 years before construction begins.• As expected, the widening of Oslo Road is spurring commercial development. At 27th Avenue, for example, a new Dunkin’ Donuts will be built across the street from the still-under-under construction Family Dollar Store. “The whole Oslo area will be coming on strong,” Billy Moss said. “There are a lot of rooftops in that area.”• While it’s great the School Board voted to name the auditorium in Vero Beach High School’s Performing Arts Center after band director James Sammons, he is worthy of the entire PAC being named in his honor. What he has accomplished at the school is truly legendary.• Quick, when was the last time there wasn’t an orange barrel somewhere on local roadways? (That’s a trick question, folks.)

Overlooked cinematic gems

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• Where the Buffalo Roam (1980, R, directed by Art Linson). Years before Johnny Depp nailed the role of Hunter S. Thompson in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” Bill Murray took on the task (with Peter Boyle as his trusty side-kick Lazlo). While Murray doesn’t quite bring the subtle nuances to the character that Depp did, I believe this movie is actually funnier than Fear and Loathing. I’ll let you be the judge.• Perfume: A Story of Murder (2006, R, directed by Tom Tykwer). In 18th century France, perfumers were akin to rock stars. This story is about Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), a man born with superlative olfactory senses that destined him to become the greatest perfumer

of all time. However, his obsession pushes him beyond the realm of sanity and his methods turn deadly. The scenery and set design are absolutely incredible. Also stars Dustin Hoffman and Rick Wakeman.• In Bruges (2008, R, directed by Martin McDonagh). Collin Farrell plays Ray, a hyperactive hitman, who is sent to Bruges to cool off after a hit gone completely wrong. Brendan Gleeson plays Ray’s friend Ken, a fellow hitman, who was sent with Ray to keep him out of trouble. When their

boss (played by Ralph Fiennes) informs Ken that he must kill Ray, Ken develops a crisis of conscience and is not sure he will be able to kill his friend. The exciting finale of the movie is a bullet ballet for the ages. Mike Bushman is owner/operator of Recycled DVDs, located at 937 Seventh Ave. (behind Chili’s restaurant) in Vero Beach.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

401. “Lotta Love”(1978) Nicolette LarsonMemory: Neil Young wrote it (bonus points), but I’m glad Nicolette Larson recorded it.400. “Rock the Boat”(1974) Hues CorporationMemory: While this song doesn’t necessarily stand the test of time, it has great sentimental value.399. “Look Away”(1988) ChicagoMemory: Like the Four Seasons, Chicago enjoyed a second wave of popularity more than a decade after the initial wave subsided.
