PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: A look at the history of U.S. 1 through Vero Beach

The following have something in common with U.S. 1: Miracle Mile, Dixie Highway, Australian pines, and the “S curve.” Florida had an East and a West Dixie Highway. The idea was conceived in 1914 to connect the Midwest with the southern United States. “Old Dixie Highway” was at one time the major highway. In 1915, non-native Australian pines were planted along the Dixie Highway as a way to protect and beautify the road. Soon after Indian River County was formed in 1925, the county commissioners in counties north and south of us appealed to the Florida State Highway Department to improve traffic conditions through the counties. Parts of Dixie Highway evolved into the new U.S. 1. The Royal Palm Subdivision was established before 1920. The streets were laid out as east-west roads. As the years went on, hotels and businesses were built along the

east-west roads known as 21st Street and 23rd Street now known as Royal Palm Boulevard. At the east end of the curve was 8th Avenue and is now U.S. 1 going south. At the west end of the curve, U.S. 1 continues north after you turn right at Commerce Avenue. The curve existed since the 1920s. In 1947, a shopping district became a reality for Vero Beach called Miracle Mile, which meant

a shopping destination. The term was first used in Coral Gables, where today their “Miracle Mile” has designer shops and restaurants. The City of Vero Beach agreed to make 21st Street a place of varied shopping and extend the street to the river lined with palm trees. Today, we know that did not happen and in fact it is less than a mile long east of U.S. 1 to Indian River Boulevard.

JUST WONDERING: What are the most popular excuses for speeding?

Jeff Saputo, a deputy with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, hears all kinds of excuses when he stops people for speeding. He compiled the list below.

1) “My GPS said I was doing the speed limit.” (Deputy’s take: “Not their speedometer – their GPS.”)2) “I did not know what the speed limit was.” (Deputy’s take: “I hear this excuse a lot from out-of-town/out-of-state drivers. My response usually is: ‘Do you have speed limit signs in your town, state or country?’)3) “I have to go to the bathroom.” (Deputy’s take: “Typically diarrhea or No. 2.”)4) “This is not my car, I am not use to it.” (Deputy’s take: “My response usually is, ‘Does it have a speedometer?’ ”)5) “I am late for work.”6) “I am late to pick up my children at school.”7) “I was going with traffic.” (Deputy’s take: “A very common excuse.”)8) “My gas tank is on empty and I am trying to get to the gas station.” (Deputy’s take: “I hear this excuse frequently – it defies the laws of logic.”)9) “I am having a bad day ... I have a lot on my mind.”10) “I am running late to the airport.” (Deputy’s take: “Usually late for their flight.”)

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Donald Trump to be more like Eddie Haskell before the GOP convention:

• Walmart may have driven mom-and-pop shops out of business, but corporate-owned “dollar” stores are flourishing. When the new Dollar General Store just west of Velde Ford opens later this year, it’ll be the 12th “dollar” store in Indian River County. (There will be four each by Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.) “When there’s development anywhere, you’ll always see a ‘dollar’ store,” said Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate. “The dollar stores are the new convenience stores.” Pretty soon, U.S. 1 will become a string of “corporate” stores – whether restaurants, drugstores, gas stations, grocery stores, mattress stores or auto parts stores. Oh, and storage facilities.

John McCoy, the county’s chief of Current Development, says two national companies are looking at land near U.S. 1 to build storage facilities. “People tell us there’s a real shortage of (storage) units,” he said. With this seemingly relentless “corporate” invasion, we’re losing the local flavor you associate with Vero. In a couple of years, U.S. 1 in Vero Beach could look just like Highway 192 in Melbourne. Let’s hope that’s not the case, but it seems inevitable.• So I go into the Shell station at 53rd and U.S. 1 to mail a small package, and the post office substation inside is practically a campaign office for Jay Kramer, who is running for a seat on the County Commission. On the counter is a brochure for Kramer as well as a petition for an issue he supports.

Not cool. Postal facilities, even ones as small as this one, should be free of politics.• A “small world” story: John Lindsey, who lives in Mississippi, recently traveled to Vero Beach for the “Strategies to Survive the Summer” workshop. His next-door neighbor (last name of Carter) is from Vero Beach.• In this space last week, I mentioned Pam Birchler’s suggestion of coming up with a nickname for the soon-to-open Indian River County Intergenerational Facility (the huge building under construction just north of Olso Road). Pam suggested Big Red. Catherine St. Clair suggested YORC – an acronym for Young and Old Recreation Center. Jerry Nashel’s nomination: “Your County 1% Extra Sales Tax Rec Center.”• Baseball fans will appreciate what the aforementioned Billy Moss, who is a huge fan of the Baltimore Orioles, is doing next month. He’s taking his 10-year-old son, Sam, who is a huge

baseball fan, to a game at Camden Yards. Even adults get into the fun. Last weekend, Curtis Carpenter was in Chicago and saw his first game at Wrigley Field. (Actually, he saw three major league games in four days – he saw home games for the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox.) OK, one more baseball note: Don’t you love the sign on the sidewalk in front of ABC Printing that brags about the Cubs being in first place?• The parking lot at the Main Library is straight out of the 1950s. It’s often packed and can be tough to navigate. That why it was so frustrating to see a car intentionally take up two parking spaces recently. It ticked me off so much that I posted a photo on Facebook. Much to my surprise, it generated 17 comments and received 25 “likes” in the first two days.• In case you’re wondering, the new Chick-fil-A restaurant is expected to open before the end of the month. Better get into the drive-thru lane now because that’s going to be a very popular restaurant.

We’ve finally moved, to 983 12th Street, behind the Car Wash.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Marce Palos was a safety consultant on 13 high-rise projects in South Florida. The final project of his career was a 48-story building in Sunny Isles Beach (Dade County). Condos there started at $6 million. When it came time to retire, though, he looked to the north. “I was kind of tired of the concrete jungle,” he said. He and his wife, Diane, bought a house in Sebastian in 2006. Their longtime friends moved to Sebastian the year before – and on Marce and Diane’s third visit here, they knew they had found a place to retire. “We looked at each other and said, ‘This is where we’re

coming’, ” he said. At 68, Marce likes to keep busy. He now does insurance inspections (mostly homes and businesses) in four counties. But music has always been his passion. Marce is an accomplished musician (contemporary and mainstream jazz) – he plays a Yamaha digital piano. The Marce Palos Trio was the

house band at the Four Seasons Hotel in Palm Beach for nine years. He wishes he could find more venues for his jazz trio / quartet in Indian River County. He’d like to bump up his 20 gigs per year to 50 or 60. (If interested, give him a call at 954-461-3998.) Meanwhile, he’ll continue to work on his third jazz CD. He hopes to have the collection of his favorite standards ready by October.
