PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Pelican Island was mentioned in 1822 newspaper article

Perhaps one of the oldest landmarks in Indian River County is Pelican Island. It was documented in an 1822 newspaper only because the state of Florida was newly purchased. An extensive article was published in the Independent Chronicle and Boston Patriot titled “Report on Florida.” The topographer mapped the east coast of Florida. Can you imagine what it must have been like at that time when there were so few settlements and no ports to land your boat? “Pelican Island is a small mangrove key, eight miles south from Turkey Creek, nearest the west shore.” In January 1859, Dr. Henry Bryant of the Boston Society of Natural History stated: “…I arrived at Indian River, where I found the most extensive breeding-place that I visited; this was on a small island, called Pelican Island, about twenty miles north of Fort Capron.” F. Trench Townsend took a trip through south Florida

in 1875. His description of the island: “Above the Narrows we came to the greatest curiosity of Indian River, known as the Rookery…This so-called rookery is in fact a pelicanry, being the abode of some tens of thousands of these birds…” The Titusville newspaper wrote in 1885 about conditions and harassment by “Northern tourists” of the birds on Pelican Island.

Frank M. Chapman arrived in 1889 on the Indian River, but it was not until 1898 that he became deeply involved with protecting the birds. He reached out to many of his bird friends to seek passage of a law to protect non-game birds. It was enacted June 4, 1901. The next step was to locate a reliable man in Sebastian to guard Pelican Island’s birds. In April 1902, the committee hired Paul Kroegel and paid him $50 to protect Pelican Island.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the drama on “Big Brother” to unfold:

• While it may have been the best “season” in years, Paul Castraberti says he noticed a “new breed” of tourists on Ocean Drive. For more than a decade, Castraberti had a front-row seat for studying human behavior. He and his wife, Marybeth, owned the iconic Lemon Tree restaurant. They sold it last week to George Shinn, former owner of the NBA’s Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets. “I couldn’t make people happy because they just didn’t want to wait,” Castraberti said. At popular restaurants, there’s going to be a wait during peak times. It’s a given. “The first thing they’d ask is, ‘How long is the wait?’ ” he said. “Not ‘Good morning. How are you?’ These people are on vacation, and they didn’t want to wait 15 minutes in the Florida sunshine.”

I asked a few business owners if they encountered this “new breed” of tourists, and they nodded in the affirmative. As Castraberti put it, Vero Beach is no longer a hamlet. It’s just the way society is today, unfortunately. If there’s not instant gratification, we’re going to take our ball and go home. The next time you’re waiting in line, strike up a conversation with the person next to you. It’ll make the time go faster … and, who knows, you might find you have something in common.• The biggest surprise of the week? Seeing a billboard for a political candidate more than 14 months before the election. The billboard for Wesley Davis, who is running for Property Appraiser, is on southbound U.S. 1 south of Sebastian. Davis opted not to seek a fourth term as County

Commissioner and is challenging David Nolte, who is seeking his 10th term as Property Appraiser.• Speaking of 2016 elections, the field for the County Commission’s District 3 race is getting crowded – and that’s a good thing. Tim Zorc, who is seeking a second term, now has three challengers. The latest to join the race is Joe Earman, a captain with Indian River Fire Rescue. The other candidates are Chuck Kirby and Mark Rodolico. So far, the races for Districts 1 and 5 are two-person races with well-known candidates. In District 1, it’s Susan Adams vs. Jim Hill. In District 5, it’s Bob Solari vs. Jay Kramer.• Back in December, I wrote about a most unusual partnership – Lila Jeanne Bussey, then 89, was opening a business with Eric Behymer, then 20. The original location for Estate Treasures did not work because it did not generate enough traffic. So, a move was in order. Bussey decided not to join Behymer in the move – Estate Treasure is now located on U.S. 1, across from CenterState

Bank, and it’s scheduled to open this week. Behymer’s business partner is now his uncle. Mark my words: Eric Behymer is going to be somebody someday. For someone so young, he’s got more “business savvy” than anyone I ever crossed paths with.• During a stop at Varietals and More (a new business in Royal Palm Pointe), I got to meet the son of owners Michele and Rob Wayne. Noah, 11, was born in France. Not many kids in Indian River County can say that. Could he be the only one?• Finally, I want to take a moment to thank readers who have supported the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. Please let them know you saw the ad – it’s important for advertisers to know their ad is working. This newsletter is published each week for you, the reader, but it would not exist without the support of advertisers. Thank you for reading, folks. Your loyalty is greatly appreciated!

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Ray McNulty and I have a lot in common. He was born on Nov. 28, 1958, whereas I entered the world the following day. We both spent three decades working for daily newspapers. In 2014, disenchantment over a drastic change in the Press Journal’s editorial philosophy – the incessant coverage of the Indian River Lagoon was done at the expense of other local stories, for example – led us down new paths in life. Ray now writes a news column for the three weekly publications under the Vero Beach 32963 Media umbrella. Milton Benjamin launched Vero Beach 32963 in 2008. Then came Sebastian River News and, just last year, Vero News. “What Milt did is amazing,” Ray said. “I’ve said all along,

I think ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ should come here and do a story on him. Here’s a guy who started a newspaper heading into a recession, basically. In an industry that’s supposed to be dying. And it’s turned into a rousing success.” Ray was a longtime sports columnist for the Press Journal. Because the same column appeared in sister papers in St. Lucie and Martin counties, his

topics had to have “regional” appeal. That’s no longer the case, as Benjamin’s publications are circulated only within Indian River County. “I’m really enjoying the whole ‘news’ thing,” he said during lunch at C.J. Cannon’s. “I live here, so I’m getting to write about my own community.” Ray admits he relishes the opportunity to go head-to-head against the Press Journal. “I like competing – I always have,” he said. “It’s one of the rushes of the job.”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

392. “I Love the Nightlife”(1978) Alicia BridgesMemory: One of the iconic songs of the disco era. Don’t you love the way she pronounced the word “action”? 391. “When Will I See You Again?”(1974) The Three DegreesMemory: One of the songs I associate with the time I started driving and listened constantly to Chicago’s AM powerhouse, WLS.390. “All My Life”(1990) Linda Rondstadt and Aaron NevilleMemory: The first dance at our wedding reception in 1996! Aside from that, though, it’s just a beautiful song.

At the Indian River County Jail, there are three 36-pound washers that do five loads a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. In 2014, nearly 200,000 pounds of laundry were washed. The annual cost of operating the laundry unit at the jail is in excess of $100,000.
