PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: History of the Bethel Creek House of Refuge (Part 2)

Two of the reasons for leaving the Bethel Creek House of Refuge in the late 1800s and early 1900s were health and boredom. Ludger Gignac received a letter from his brother: “I hope this letter will not find you in Vero, that is my last letter to that place; if by accident you are still there, put strongly in your mind that you must struggle for your liberty, the life of your wife, the education of your children, the reintegration in a civilized country to the end, never losing courage. Of course the day will rise when they will be obliged to release you.” On Jan. 28, 1915, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the “Act to create the Coast Guard” (which combined the Life Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service). Sadly for county history, the original House of Refuge burned down Jan 11, 1917 while Walter Kitching, part of a longtime pioneer family, was keeper. Coast Guard buildings were replaced to continue the service. There was an observation tower that was used to watch

for submarines during WW II. There also was a tower with the early station. So, it is not known if the rocks you see here may have been from the original tower. This site was transferred to the City of Vero Beach in 1950 and the Junior Chamber of Commerce began development of the park in 1956. Photographs have emerged over the last 10 to15 years from descendants of these keepers as they have

visited the Main Library and Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge to see what it was like. We have been very fortunate for their donations and gifts of history. Some of the more well-known shipwrecks in this area: • USS Panama 1887 – dress goods, staple foods • Breconshire 1894 • Schooner Asta 1918 • Yacht called the Genesee 1925

Eight bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Tony Kanaan to take the checkered flag in the Indianapolis 500:

• Apparently, Aldi still wants to open a grocery store in Indian River County. The German chain originally was interested in building one of its no-frills stores in the new development just west of Olive Garden (on eastbound State Road 60 just west of 58th Avenue), but that didn’t work out. Aldi is now looking at being part of something new a mile or two to the east. The retail shopping development, tentatively called Vero Beach Landings, would be built between Applebee’s and Sonny’s. According to the pre-application submitted to the county, the 9.5-acre development would include an Aldi (18,500 square feet), a retail plaza (42,000 square feet), a fast-food restaurant and a gas/convenience store.

“They’re in the very beginning stages,” said Steven Hitt, a senior environmental planner with the county. Phil Matson, staff director for the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, says a pre-application is the first step in a months-long process. “We have a lot of stuff that dies in (the) pre-application (stage),” he said. What are the chances this project will die? “It depends 100 percent on the interest of the developer,” he said. Based on how many people do their grocery shopping at Walmart, Aldi could be a big hit in the area. That’s because its prices are often lower than Walmart’s.• When there’s an extended downpour, I always joke with my wife that “it’s like Tropical Storm Fay.” (That 2008 storm will long be remembered for the 18 inches of rain over the

course of a week.) So, what are we going to call last week’s storm that dumped 11.22 inches of rain in Vero Beach? It shattered the one-day record for precipitation. (See the all-time Top 10 list on Page 3.) We need a name! Otherwise, it’s going to be too hard to remember the details.• Did you know on the day of the record-setting rain Vero Beach was mentioned on both the CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News? We didn’t make the cut on ABC World News Tonight.• Readers email me photos all the time, and here’s a snapshot of the variety received so far this month – Elaine Moore sent a photo of newborn robins (taken by her friends in Ohio), Sue Carter took a photo of a car with a Quintana Roo (Mexico) license plate, and Melissa Morales sent a photo of a car taking up several parking spaces at Publix. Keep ’em coming!• More on the record rainfall: I happened to be driving on

S.R. 60 and encountered flooding on 33rd Avenue. It was pretty scary. Don’t get me started about the pick-up trucks that plowed through the water, spraying water on both sides. How inconsiderate.• There are days when I wish I were a law-enforcement officer in an unmarked car. That way, I would have been able to stop the kid on the motorcycle who was going at least 85 mph on northbound U.S. 1 in the Winter Beach area. His insurance rates can’t be too high.• The site of the former Dockside Grille, located on Royal Palm Pointe, is being gutted to make way for a new restaurant. Supposedly, it’s going to be a steakhouse.• So I’m dropping off a copy of last week’s issue at the Florida Eye Institute and I hear a man making an appointment for his next annual exam – and the receptionist asks if May 23, 2017 is OK with him. “I’m free,” he said without hesitation.

We’ve finally moved, to 983 12th Street, behind the Car Wash.

Overlooked cinematic gems

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• The 100-Year-Old Man (2013, R, directed by Felix Herngren. Full title: “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared”). Upon his 100th birthday, Allan Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson) decides the old-folks home is not for him and thus makes his escape. He immediately becomes embroiled in an epic adventure that involves a road trip, an organized crime syndicate, $54 million in stolen cash, and an elephant – all the while recounting the exploits of his equally epic life.• Overnight (2003, R, directed by Tony Montana and Mark Brian Smith). This documentary chronicles the rise and fall of writer/director Troy Duffy. Troy’s script for “The Boondock Saints” was THE hot property in Hollywood

in 1997 and Troy was destined for greatness. However, through sheer hubris, Troy managed to alienate everybody in a position to help fulfill that destiny. Blacklisted, Troy still managed to get the movie made (as well as a sequel), but has since all but disappeared from the industry.• A Boy and His Dog (1975, R, directed by L.Q. Jones). This post-apocalyptic action/comedy stars Don Johnson as Vic. He is a rover, who, with his telepathic dog, scours the wastelands searching for food and female companionship. Vic is lured into

helping out an underground society whose male population has become sterile from decades of underground living, but when Vic finds out he is to be disposed of after the job is done, it becomes an all-out fight for escape. Also stars Jason Robards and Susanne Benton.Mike Bushman is owner/operator of Recycled DVDs, located at 937 Seventh Ave. (behind Chili’s restaurant) in Vero Beach.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

Indian River County has seen a steady increase in amount of recycled materials being collected. During the 2012-13 fiscal year, the county collected 50,892 tons of recycled material. During the 2014-15 fiscal year, the number of tons collected was nearly 88,000. Projection for the current fiscal year: 93,500 tons.

Fun factsTop 500 countdown

All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
