Celebrating 45 Years 2015

PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: So much of our history is unknown to our residents

What a letdown! The 1715 Commemoration Week is over! The “Fleet Team” which consisted of five library staff was feeling “we cannot stop now.” The team absolutely enjoyed every minute of preparing, organizing and presenting each event and display. It was generally felt we must do something similar in the coming year. So which historical event should we consider? And therein lies the conundrum. So many anniversaries are forthcoming. On the other hand, so much of our history is unknown to our residents. We have a wide range of ideas to choose from. History is everywhere you live. Probably the most surprising words I heard at the 1715 events are that many did not know why we were called the “Treasure Coast.” Hundreds of books have been written about the Spanish Treasure Fleets, but it depends on your focus. Do you like history? Then most likely you are familiar with the tragedy

of the shipwrecks and maybe even why they sank. I have to admit, the research was most enjoyable because we increased our knowledge. There is no better way to learn than working on a project such as an historical event. We also felt compelled to be historically correct t o avoid too much criticism. But, who agrees when it comes to history anyway? Everyone has an opinion, and discussions with lots of networking is fun. Another surprise was how many people still buy

books. The book-signing was a huge success. Authors and patrons enjoyed a great day of learning and networking. The best way to learn is to listen to what others have to say. The “Fleet Team” is thinking about the next event. We learned that history is fun and it is WHERE you live!

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Steve to get the boot on “Big Brother”:

• Remember Kaitlyn Hunt? Two years ago, shortly before she was to graduate from Sebastian River High School, she made national headlines after being charged with a felony for having sex with an underage girl. Believe it or not, the bizarre case is being turned into a made-for-TV movie. Well, sort of. The Hunt case will be revisited in an episode of the MTV series “One Bad Choice.” It’s scheduled to air Thursday, Aug. 20 at 11 p.m. We’re talking about an episode with actors! According to imdb.com, Kaitlyn Bausch will play Kaitlyn Hunt. Brett G. Smith will play “Detective Shepard,” (I presume that’s Jeremy Shepherd, a detective with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.) Three other actors are listed in the credits. Thanks to Melissa Morales for letting me know about

this episode. As she said, “It should be interesting to see how everything is portrayed.” If you want a quick refresher course on the Kaitlyn Hunt case, check out supporthonesty.net. She ranks with Denise Harvey as the least sympathetic defendants during the past decade.• If Elite Airways starts operating out of Vero Beach Regional Airport in November, the key to its success will be which day it flies from Vero Beach to Newark, and which day it flies from Newark to Vero Beach. (Supposedly, Elite plans to have only one flight per week in each direction.)• Charlie Wilson says he will not be running for Vero Beach City Council in November. He predicts there will be five candidates for the two

seats. Both incumbents, Dick Winger and Amelia Graves, are running. So are first-time candidate Laura Moss and, of course, Brian Heady. (Heady jokes that it’s not an official election unless he is on the ballot.) Who will be the fifth candidate? It’s probably safe to assume he or she will be in favor of the sale of the city’s electric system to Florida Power & Light.• The number of registered voters (as of Aug. 14) In Indian River County: 99,646. It’s on track to break 100,000 by the 2016 Presidential Preference Primary, as Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan predicted several months ago.• Bill Douglass, the owner of WSI Digital Marketing, had me nodding my head in agreement when he talked about the benefits of working from home. Among other things, we love not having to get into a car and drive to the office. “My commute is about 30 seconds,” he said.• At last week’s huge business-networking event at Velde Ford, I had the pleasure of meeting sisters Dottie Childers

and Bobbi Burdick. They operate Goodtime Getaways. Bobbi happens to be the mother-in-law of Bob Gray, who is the Press Journal’s circulation manager. Long story short: More than a year ago, Bob told me that someone mistook him for me – after he said that, I took a photo of us standing together. So, after finding the photo in my iPhone, I emailed it to Bobbi. Did she see a resemblance? “It is a great picture, but the only thing I can see alike is your red shirts,” she said. “Maybe I know Bob too well.”• An ad placed by All Aboard Florida in Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News left me scratching my head. “We love it when a state comes together. … Thanks to supporters from Orlando, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and all points in between.” Really? Apparently, the vehement opposition along the Treasure Coast just melted away and we came together with the rest of the state.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

I had no idea Avon was still so popular. But after seeing Rosi Stubbs work the room at various networking events, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised the company – which I associate with my mother’s generation – had nearly $9 billion in revenue in 2014. Of the roughly 600 Avon sales reps in her district, which runs from Cape Canaveral to Port St. Lucie, Rosi ranks No. 3 in sales. She says she has 1,267 customers on the books. On average, she delivers orders to 60 every other week. “Most of my customers come from referrals,” she said. “I don’t walk up to people and hand them Avon books.”

The third-generation Indian River County resident started selling Avon products about 10 years ago. “It just came naturally,” she said. She jokes that her office is in her car. “It’s good fowr me,” she said. “I see a lot of people during the day.” She takes most of her Avon orders by phone, but texting has become more popular. (Rosi’s phone number: 772-778-5277.)

What are the most popular items she sells? Skin So Soft is No. 1, followed by jewelry, skwin-care products and perfume. How powerful is the Avon brand? Well, when Rosie introduced herself as an “Avon lady” to a group of about 100 people at a recent networking event, a man in the crowd responded with two instantly recognizable words. “Ding! Dong!”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

During the past 144 years, Vero Beach has been hit by 27 tropical storms and 30 hurricanes.

On average, Vero Beach is brushed or hit by a tropical storm or hurricane every 2.51 years. (The last tropical storm was Fay in 2008, and the last hurricane was Wilma in 2005.)
