My Brothers in Christ,

Easter is fast approaching as

we pray to the Lord for His

blessing upon us as we cele-

brate His resurrection. Re-

member the unfortunate

ones among us who need

our help.

The 111th North Dakota State Convention will

be in Bismarck, ND April 27-29, 2018. Councils

should be selecting their delegates and getting

this information to the State Secretary as soon

as possible. It would be great if all councils

would send at least one member as a delegate.

Now is the time to really put our recruitment

skills together and bring in the new members.

March is one of the Orders membership months

for bringing in new members. I am asking each

council to get engaged these last few months in

membership. If help is needed to conduct

membership drives, please let any of the officers

of the state know of this and we’ll do all we can

to help.

I wish to thank all of you for the help and

friendship you have given to me these past 2

years as the State Deputy. I belong to a number

of organizations and can say in all sincerity that

the Knights of Columbus is the best of all of

them. You are a great organization and I am

proud to be a member of this group of men.

State Convention Agenda Christ Has Risen! As Catholics we know that by our Relationship with Jesus and the Sacraments have eternal bene-fits. Faithful Catholics will indeed go to heaven if they strive to know, love, and spread the Faith of Jesus and His Holy Catholic Faith. As Knights of Columbus, we Catholic men receive benefits from our membership in our beloved organization. First gift is that we receive a free sub-scription to our Catholic magazine the

"Columbia." This is one of the best Catholic magazines to help us to examine issues of concern to Knights, Catholics and families. We also did receive in our 1st degree a Knights of Columbus rosary. e are to be men of prayer. The rosary is a wonderful way to meditate on the Mysteries of God, and to become stronger men to stand against a society that wants to obliterate Christianity from the face of the Earth. Mary will help us to crush the head of Satan. Jesus will always reign supreme if we are faithful to prayer. Also, each day a Daily Mass of Remembrance is held at St. Mary's Church for de-ceased members and their wives at the birthplace of the Or-der. The Mass is the source and summit of a Catholic Faith. Our insurance benefit has been a gift to every Catholic Knight and our Family. We also have a Family Fraternal Benefit - For eligible families: a) pays $1,500 for the child who dies before the age of 61 days; b) pays $750 for the child who is stillborn at least 20 weeks after conception; c) offers guar-anteed-issue insurance - up to $5,000 - to any child under age 18. Moreover, Orphan Benefit - $80 monthly allotment for orphans of eligible families; up to $7,000 in college scholar-ships available. These unfortunate events of life with the loss of a Child, money cannot replace a child, but it shows that our Catholic organization is there even in bad time as well as good. We have a Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit - Accidental death coverage for member and spouse at no cost: Widow Benefits - a) continues to be covered under the Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit; b) may purchase life insurance, long-term care insurance or annuities up to one year after insured member's death; c) receives a free lifetime subscription to Columbia; d) eligible with her children for scholarships, student loans, etc. (K of C Web site) We have Scholarship programs for higher education avail-able to members, their spouses and children to assist them if they go to college. We need educated Catholics among the laity, and here is one benefit that most do not take advantage of. Lastly, we have Leadership Development! After getting in-volved we help to develop the whole person, spiritually as well as professionally. We can build personal leadership skills, public speaking ability, and organizational skills. Get more involved in your council and know the gift of your member-ship. Catholic men it is time to unite, and work to build our organization with Christ. There is no other American Frater-nal Society that we could join that helps to develop you spiri-tually, emotionally, and psychologically for the whole of life. I can’t believe it, but my first 6

months as Vice Supreme Master have

flown by.

Many of you may ask, what does my

job consist of as VSM of the DeSmet

Province. First, the DeSmet Province

consists of North Dakota, South Dakota,

Montana and Wyoming. It is my job to

oversee the Master’s in those four States

and to promote the Fourth Degree within

them. I approve all exemplifications and

approve all new assemblies. I also pro-

mote the Knights of Columbus in all the

4 degrees. I do my best along with my

Provincial Marshal, Jake Werner, to be

at all fourth-degree exemplifications in these four states. To

date we have had 4 in ND with 2 more scheduled, 4 in SD with

working on 1 more, 1 scheduled in Montana and 1 in Wyoming

with 1 more scheduled. The Master’s have been doing a tre-

mendous job promoting the fourth degree.

Dixie and I look forward to seeing you all at this years con-

vention in North Dakota.

Brothers Knights,

We’re now on the back hill side of

the fraternal year and we still have a lot

of work to accomplish! Our State Dep-

uty Larry is asking us all to remember

the new requirement to have a least four

programs coming from the Building the

Domestic church categories. This has

been added to help councils more fully

integrate into the parish where we re-

ceive and strengthen our faith for both us as Knights and our

families.

It is also time to take stock of how you are doing in your

quest for the Star Council award. Have you submitted your

required reports? Are you in good standing with the Supreme

Council (and state) concerning financial obligations? Are you

on track to meet your membership goals? Have you been pro-

moting both current and new members to meet with their insur-

ance representative? Take a look at the requirements and see

how you are stacking up. If you haven’t already, take the time

to meet with your Pastor to plan a Parish membership drive.

Make sure to have a plan ready to execute that includes man-

power, materials, pulpit announcement and forms necessary to

have an effective drive. Invite your District deputy and Insur-

ance Agent to help and schedule a follow up meet and greet for

those who’ve shown an interest and a 1st degree for those ready

to join.

Lent is a time for us to plan church, council and family ac-

tivities around the Easter season. Contact your parish minis-

tries and see how the Knights can partner and assist with the

program and activities planned. Remember if you are conduct-

ing fish fries, always try to have a recruitment component.

My wife Deb and I are looking forward to seeing you all at the

North Dakota Knights of Columbus State Convention in Bis-

marck, so if you haven’t already registered yet there’s still

plenty of time!

State Membership Meeting Held in Historic Medora

The State Membership

Meeting was held in

historic Medora on

December 8 -10, 2017.

Sunday Mass was cele-

brated at St. Mary’s

Church in Medora which

is the oldest Catholic

church in the state that is

still being used. The

church was built in 1884.

Joe Ramirez.

Knights of Columbus members and their families

from Lefor Council 5477 came together on, May 6, 2017,

to help Keith and Debbie Herold plant their crop of spring

wheat.

Keith, Grand Knight of Lefor St. Elizabeth Council

5477, had been diagnosed with cancer and was unable to

plant his crop. Within one day, with four air seeders and

tractors going, and a lot of support help the job was done.

Because in our little town of Lefor, we all come

together when someone is in need and as members of the

Knights of Columbus, we owe this to a fellow knight and

friend. This past summer was a tough one for all, as we

battled the drought all summer long.

Keith battled cancer through the summer and unto the

late fall. He always had the support of his family and

friends to the end.

Keith passed away on December 10th, 2017. He will

always be remembered as a good Christian man where

God and his family came first. Rest in Peace.

Msgr. John Halloran Assembly 1821 in

Watford City stood guard over open casket,

for five hours, of dear friend and fellow

Sir Knight, Jerome (Jerry) A. Garman.

Jerry was very active in Watford City Council 6446 and

Assembly 1821. At Jerry’s request before his death and his

wife Carol’s further request, the Sir Knights from Assembly

1821 stood guard over his open casket during viewing, before

and during the funeral and at the burial. It was a very moving

experience for all.

Jerry was very active with pro-life causes and protecting the

unborn. A memorial fund is being set up to honor Jerry and to

continue support with protecting the unborn.

September: *Removed old floor tile from the St. Boniface

church kitchen so new, brighter floor tile could be installed.

November: *Sponsored a Turkey Bingo for the Community to

raise funds for the council.

December: *The Parishes of Esmond, Balta and Maddock

made a total of 20 tie-blankets which the Knights donated to

the Veterans at the Veterans hospital in Fargo and Veterans

home in Lisbon.

*Displayed a public Nativity scene in front of St. Boniface

Church in Esmond for the Christmas season.

January: *Sponsored a memorial mass for deceased members

of the Esmond Knights of Columbus.

February: *Hosted complimentary Valentines Day dinner for

members, spouses and guests. Spouses received gifts at the

dinner.

March: *Sponsored an all you can eat Pancake and Sausage

breakfast for the community after mass on Palm Sunday.

Greetings in the Risen Lord! Happy Easter! Alleluia!! We all need reminders and opportuni-ties to refocus our efforts and to get back on track. For example, at the beginning of the calendar year, we may make New Year’s resolutions. “On January 1st, I’m going get back on my diet”. “On January 1st, I’m going to get back to regular exer-cise.” “On January 1st, I’m going to _____.” The Church in her wisdom also gives us those reminders and opportunities. For example, the season of Lent is just such an opportunity. All of us can get lax, or forgetful, or slip out of a good spiritual routine. At the beginning of Lent, the Church reminds us and invites us to get back on track. Remember those words on Ash Wednesday, “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”? But now that we have completed our Lenten journey and are in the midst of celebrating Easter, the temptation is to put our new discipline back on the shelf in our closet where it will be kept safe until we need it again next Lent. Don’t let that happen! Many of you added going to daily Mass to your spiri-tual routine during Lent. Resist the temptation to stop going to daily Mass now that Lent is over! The Lord is just waiting to nourish you with Himself in the Eucharist each day. Many of you took advantage of the opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. Resist the temptation to “not think about confession” until next Lent. Many of you began or in-creased your time spent reading and praying with the Scrip-tures. Resist the temptation to put your Bible back on your bookshelf now that Lent is over. My hope for each of you is that you had a Blessed Lenten journey and that now you are filled with great joy as we cele-brate Our Lord’s victory over sin and death. My prayer for each of you is that you keep motivated to grow in Holiness. Yes, Lent is over. Easter has arrived! But Our Lord’s invi-tation to grow in holiness is extended to each of us every day. Worthy Members of Team North Dakota,

It has been a great past few years. North

Dakota has earned the Circle of Honor for

two years in a year. We are on the verge to

earn the Circle of Honor for a third

year. However, we need your help. We

still need to recruit more members. If you

know of any family or friends who are

good catholic, please ask them to join. Remember, people will

not join until they have been asked. Lets ask and let them feel

welcome to be part this Catholic Organization, the Knights of

Columbus.

Here is a checklist every council should do to close the

fraternal year.

1. Plan a First degree. With out a First Degree, no can can join.

2. Order your recruiting drive materials. You should always

have recruiting materials on hand and distribute to your mem-

bers at your council. Ask them to recruit.

3.Church Drive, Lets get it schedule and executed. Lets the

parishioners know what the Knights of Columbus council has

done and planning to do. If you let your parish know of your

upcoming projects, you will have volunteers that would enjoy

assisting in the charitable projects.

4. Confirm that your council is compliant with the office of

youth protection requirements.

5. Make sure your council is on the path to earning the Star

Council award.

Lets Grow the Order of the North Dakota Knights of

Columbus by welcoming more men into the order.

PENNIES FOR VOCATIONS

Each year at the North Dakota State Convention, coun-

cils bring pennies for the Parade of Pennies. This is one of

many activities the Knights have to raise awareness for the

need of priestly vocations and raise money for seminarians.

The money collected at the Parade of Pennies is put in the

Christopher Fund, a charitable partnership between the

Supreme Council and State Councils. The interest earned

each year comes back to the Diocese of Fargo, the Diocese

of Bismarck and the North Dakota Knights of Columbus

Foundation for vocations.

You can help by giving a donation to your council to

present at the Parade of Pennies at the State Convention on

April 28, 2018

Remember, your pennies can and will make a difference.

The North Dakota Knights of Columbus Foundation will

again conduct our annual auction at the State Convention on

Friday, April 27th immediately after the civic awards presen-

tation.

The Foundation conducts this annual

fund raising activity at the state convention

and this is one of the main ways that the

Foundation has to raise monies. The suc-

cess of the auction depends entirely upon

our individual Knights, Councils, and

Assemblies, so please bring items to the state convention to

be placed in this auction.

Remember any item(s) that you donate to the action will

help generate monies for the Foundation. The earnings on

these monies are used to carry out our mission of providing

financial support for religious, educational and charitable

programs of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Colum-

bus in North Dakota. The Foundation Board asks that you

bring your auction items to the registration desk when you

register for the convention.

The North Dakota Knights of Columbus Foundation sin-

cerely appreciates your past support, and hopes that you can

continue to support the Foundation in the future.

IT IS MY JOB Every time I get a letter from

Father Gabriel O’Donnell,

O.P., Guild Director, he tells

me that “we depend on you to

further our message and in-

crease our membership.” That

you would be me. It is my job,

that I accepted, so this is yet

another invitation for you to join the Father

Michael J. McGivney Guild, if you have not

already done so. Here is your opportunity to

journey along the path followed in the cause

for canonization along with 1230 other mem-

bers from North Dakota. The Guild is set up

to promote the cause of our Founder. The

goal is to spread the good word about his ho-

liness of life, to encourage devotion to his

memory and to seek his intercession before

the throne of God.

As a member of the guild, you will re-

ceive a newsletter with periodic updates on

the progress of the cause. Currently a sec-

ond miracle, attributed to Fr. McGivney’s in-

tercession, is being reviewed in Rome. As a

member you will be enrolled in a weekly

mass and there is no charge to join.

In the last four exemplifications we have

brought in quite a few young men. That is

what our assemblies need. All we, as Sir

Knights, have to say to begin a conversation

with a potential candidate is “Would you like

to become a Fourth Degree Knight?”. Give it

a try. Some men are just waiting to be asked.

The State Convention is nearing. It will

be held in Bismarck at the Ramkota Inn on

April 27, 28, and 29. The agenda for the

Fourth Degree meeting will be short. One of the agenda items

will be a brief discussion regarding the new uniform/regalia.

This is actually not an issue since it was a done deal at the time

that it was announced. As good and faithful Knights, we must

follow the directives of the Supreme Council.

Assemblies please be sure to send in your list of Fourth

Degree delegates. Attire for the meeting and the banquet will

be the new uniform, or your tux and social baldric, or a suit and

social baldric for the new Sir Knights who have not received

their uniform. The only time full regalia will be worn will be

at the Memorial Mass.

Thank you to the assemblies which have made donations to

the Master’s Fund.

ND K of C Foundation Golf Tournament The 16th annual North Dakota Knights of Columbus Founda-

tion Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, August 10, 2018

at the beautiful CrossRoads Golf Course in Carrington, North

Dakota. The tournament will be a 18 hole scramble format.

There will be four people to a team and teams may be all male,

all female or co-ed. Registration will start at 10:30 AM, with a

shotgun start at 11:15 AM. Registration fee will be $50 per

person or $200 per team. This registration fee will entitle a

golfer to green fees, a meal following the tournament, chance

for hole prizes and chance for team cash prizes. Golf carts are

not included in the entry fee, but may be reserved at the Cross-

Roads Country Club by calling 701-652-2601.

All net proceeds from this tournament will go into the treas-

ury of the North Dakota Foundation of the Knights of Colum-

bus. These funds will then be used to help the seminarians as

they prepare for the Priesthood. So get a team together and

help in this very important cause and at the same time have

some fun on the golf course. The registration form for this golf

tournament will be in this issue of the Discover magazine. So

get your team together, fill out the form and mail the completed

form with the registration fee to Duane Zwinger, 3790 25th

Street South #15, Fargo, ND 58104.

Do this early as the tournament will be limited to the first 36

teams that register and pay their fee.

Just one final comment regarding the golf tournament. You

will recall that we have had some bad luck regarding the

weather during our tournament in the past. We can’t guarantee

that this will not happen again, but hope not!!!!!

Last year as you will recall, the weather was very nice. We

want to thank all teams that were at our tournaments in the past

and hope to see you again this year.

TOURNAMENT SPONSORSHIP

You will recall in the past that we had a tournament booklet that

had information regarding the tournament and also sponsors for

the tournament. The Board of Directors of the Foundation for

the past few years have decided not to have the tournament

booklet for this years tournament. We still want to generate

funds by the selling of advertisement. The board decided to

have hole sponsors as a means of sponsoring. The first 18 busi-

nesses, councils, assemblies or individuals that want to sponsor

a hole may do so for a fee of $200. You may also be a tourna-

ment sponsor with a donation of $50 or $100. These sponsors

will be listed on a SPONSOR SHEET available at the tourna-

ment. So if your business, council, assembly or an individual

wants to sponsor, let Duane Zwinger know of your wishes.

Send him you ad and you money.

So we need the help of all Knights of Columbus Councils and

Assemblies and their members to make this golf tournament a

success. You can do this by being in the golf tournament or by

being a sponsor. Help make this the best Foundation Golf Tour-

nament ever.

LaMoure Council 6752 organized an hour long prayer ser-

vice in front of the Red River Women's Clinic in Fargo on

Sunday, October 29th, 2017.

About 33 parishioners attended, half of which were the youth

from Holy Rosary Parish in LaMoure. The group offered

prayers and song for an end to abortions.

Devils Lake Knights of Columbus Council 1779 and Father

Maurice Jaeger 4th Degree Assembly 792 sponsored a breakfast

that was held on December 8th at the Knights of Columbus

Club in Devils Lake, for Father Matthew Pamplaniyil.

Over a dozen brother Knights from Father Matthew’s parish,

St. Mary’s Church in Munich, prepared a delicious breakfast

that raised $4,000 to cover travel and other non-reimbursable

medical expenses for Father Matthew’s upcoming kidney trans-

plant.

Father Matthew’s brother will travel from India this spring to

donate a kidney. Please keep Father Matthew and his brother

in your prayers. Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact St. Mary’s Parish in Munich or the Knights of Columbus in Devils Lake.

As the State Treasurer for the North

Dakota Knights of Columbus my primary

responsibility is to receive, deposit and

track all monies for the State Council, as

well as, pay all bills incurred by the State

Council.

Spring is just around the corner……and it

won’t be long and and the North Dakota

Knights of Columbus annual convention will be upon us.

As we approach this years convention I would like to remind

each of you that all the monies collected by your council for

the Home on the Range, Shamrocks Sales and Tootsie Rolls /

Special Olympic should be submitted to the State Council by

April 1, 2018.

The Annual Right to Life Rosary

March and Mass were held on January

22, 2018 in Bismarck.

Attendees gathered in front of CHI St.

Alexius and began the Rosary Proces-

sion to St. Mary's Church. Bishop Ka-

gan offered mass and a collection was

taken to benefit North Dakota Right to

Life.

Major Degrees this year have been awesome, State Deputy Larry assigned me to this position and the District Deputies have been awesome to work with. For this fraternal year, we have 32 major degrees scheduled with the possibility of a couple more. If your council would like to host a major degree, contact me and we will do our best to get it done. A great THANK YOU goes to our Team Captains, Ross Reiter, Steven Riehl, Jerry Clark, Daryl Kemple, Don Hoger and John Clark for taking care of all the Formation de-grees. Also to our Conferring Officers, Mike Welder, Kevin Boehm, and John Clark for taking care of the Knighthood Degree. We did use one CO from South Dakota this year as we had no one available on one date so a friend of mine, Tim Salmen out of Madison SD made a trip to Minot. If anyone is interested in becoming a CO, please be in touch with State Deputy so the paperwork can be started. Currently, Dennis Horpestad has had his paperwork sent to Su-preme. Keep up the great work on promoting the Knights of Columbus.

The Valley City Knights of Columbus

#6438 hosted a Region free throw competi-

tion on Sunday, February 24th. Each par-

ticipant shot 25 free throws and the one

that made the most shots was deemed the

winner. Bryson Heck from Valley City

won top honors in the boy’s age 10 divi-

sion. The competitors previously competed

at a local and district

competition and now move on the State

competition in Bismarck on Saturday,

March 24th. Congratulations to our par-

Don’t worry. I will protect you and keep you safe. Some time in our life we may have heard these words and trusted the person who spoke them. We knew they would be our protector. Maybe it was because you were afraid of the dark, a thunderstorm, or just had a bad dream. For others, it may have been from a school bully or someone who might be trying to hurt you in some way. At Home On The Range, we practice, promote, teach, and enforce “safety” as our top priority. In fact, we feel so strongly about being protectors of children, that we include it in our mission statement: “Providing a safe home for youth who have experienced physical or emotional trauma, where every act is done with love to help them discover the dignity of the human person and learn the skills to manage life’s challenges.” But are there other ways to feel safe? Throughout our spiritual lives, we pray to God for protection – from danger or evil, to protect our children from pain or trauma, to watch over us as we travel and throughout the day. We depend on God to watch over us, when we are awake or asleep, and even when we aren’t aware. The Holy Family Chapel at Home On The Range is a quiet, safe place for the boys and girls. It is much more than a physi-cal place or room. Once inside, the children understand and expect they will be safe, that no physical harm will come to them. But what about their emotional and spiritual safety? Again, this comes from the Chapel’s spiritual tones, the Sta-tions of the Cross, the Altar, and the Bible. But here in this place, they aren’t judged by others, just loved. They are free to ask for forgiveness and learn how to forgive. They pray for their families, friends, staff and themselves. They share their hurts and support each other. They share their successes and encourage each other.

Each week, the Spiritual staff leads a prayer group. It is more than just prayers. It is their safe place. “The reasons why I come to prayer group are because I feel safe here. It’s a place where we can share our feelings and our hardships and not be judged for it. At prayer group we give each other positive feedback and there is never any negativity. We all support each other up. We are like our own little family. We trust each other and feel safe when we are here. Safe to share our feelings and safe to show each other love and that we care about each other. No matter how much or how less we show it. Prayer group is also a place where we feel safe to cry with each other. I don’t share a lot about myself or cry much but when I’m in prayer group I can open up and cry and not have to worry about what the people will think of me after-wards. Oh, and I like the snacks and hot cocoa after group.” Gretchen “I come because I feel like it’s a safe place to vent my sins and forgive them and know I’m not alone. This group has showed me that my fear doesn’t exist forever. I’ve so much support and feel the loving energy between everyone and all from joining two times.” Kristen We have often heard stories about the power of prayer. Prayer, safety, or more importantly feeling safe, is flourishing and working within the hearts and spirits of the children and staff at Home On The Range. Home On The Range is a special project supported by the North Dakota Knights of Columbus. Home On The Range is licensed to care for 40 boys and girls, ages 12 – 19. The facility is under the Auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Bismarck and is located in western North Dakota near the town of Sentinel Butte. · Cash contributions or pledges paid over a period of time.

· Purchase a life insurance policy making the Foundation the owner or

beneficiary. If owner, any premiums paid are tax deductible.

· Remember the Foundation in your will. Many people find it desirable and

possible to make charitable bequest after adequately providing for the

needs of loved ones. You can give a percentage of your estate, a

specified dollar amount, or property.

· Our foundation charitable gift annuity program provides an excellent op-

portunity to support our mission while enjoying a fixed income for life.

· With a $10,000 contribution or greater, the Foundation will set up a plan in the donor’s name and he/she can select where the earnings of this contribution should go annually in their name, as long as it is consis-tent with our mission.
