KNIGHTS CORNER This month, we re-run our feature on our Deputy Grand Knight Mike Padilla. This article first ran in 2014 while he was serving as Advocate Why did I become a Knight? My Dad was a Knight in the Philippines. I respected and admired how he lived his life and so I want- ed to emulate his principles, his goodness and his love of God. That's my motivation to become a Knight. I went to the KofC office 16 years ago and volunteered to become a member. A few years after I joined, I took my 4th degree oath. As a Knight, I have participated in the Bingo activities, have at- tended a few 4th degree meetings/events, supported a few KofC fundraising events, and have represented the chapter in the 2013 State conference in Indy. Lourdes and I (with lots of help from the Pro Life Ministry and the Boy Scouts) coordinated the annual Good Friday fish fry when it was still held in the council hall. As an elected KofC Advocate, I have been attending the planning and general council meetings in the past year on the 3rd and 1st Mondays, respectively, of each month. I also volun- teered to publish the monthly newsletter of the Council. We have gone electronic on the newsletter for several months now. Lourdes and I have been the Pro-Life chair couple for the Council since we were drafted by Harold (Neville) more than a decade ago. In all these activities, all I can think of is how I could certainly do more for the Council. Lourdes and I have been involved with parish activities that are tightly knit with the Knights. As a ProLife Ministry member and Gabriel project local leader, Lourdes has always collaborated with the Knights directly or indirectly for years. As WW Marriage Encounter presenting team, Lourdes and I are again hoping to closely col- laborate with the Knights as we work together on strengthening marriage and family. Mikey, our oldest, then 23 years old, has also joined the Knights Council at DePauw (Greencastle) following my foot- steps, I hope. (Since this writing, Daniel, our youngest, has also joined the Knights Council at Notre Dame.) I have always been drawn deeply to the KofC from childhood. The Knights of Columbus, its organization and its founding principles are in line with what I have always believed in as a Catholic. Our es- sence of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism is second to none. Our organization has been true to these principles by what we do, locally, nationally and globally. And we have nev- er swayed with the changing times. Indeed, we are matched in stability only by the Catholic Church, which we so emulate. I'm proud to be a Knight and am joyful to join brother Knights in our quest to help our fellow men to be holy in Christ through Mary.

Building the Domestic Church Prayers, Devotions and Activities for Families

During his visit to the Philippines, Pope Francis cited the need for “holy and loving families to protect the beauty and truth of the family in God’s plan and to be an example for other families” (Pope Francis, Address to Families at the Mall of Asia Are-na). Building the Domestic Church is one concrete way that the Knights of Columbus, in solidarity with Pope Francis, can offer “holy and loving families” for the Church’s mission of evangelization in our time. We encourage our brother Knights, together with their families, to avail of this program with the goal of strengthening and building holy families. Each month, we will provide monthly themes, meditations, projects and Scripture verses that can help you place God and the faith at the center of your lives. By doing so, you can teach your children the importance of humbly looking to God for assistance in all things. The program is designed to be flexible to meet the continuously changing needs of your family, so you can begin during any month of the year. Some families may wish to set aside a space in their home as a prayer corner. Others may wish to come together at the dinner table or another common family area. Whichever method your family chooses, we encourage you to set aside a regular time on each Sunday of the month to consider together the month’s meditation and Scripture passage. Children should also be encouraged to actively participate in these devotions, whether by reading a section of the mediation or Scripture verse, or by adding their own personal intentions to the regular prayers. Older children may wish to be even more involved. Discuss with them in further depth the Church’s teachings on marriage and the family, or encourage them to share their own questions on the monthly mediations and prayers.

The Communion of Saints By virtue of baptism and the sacramental graces of marriage, the Christian family is built into a communion of saints. Holiness is a gift given to every

baptized Christian that becomes a joyful task for the whole of life.

NOVEMBER

Family Project

Select a few saints and learn about their time period and culture and why they are invoked for specific causes or intentions. Include a dish from their culture during one of your meals. Also, consider making a pilgrimage to a sacred place dedicated to a saint.

Scripture Reading

- Psalm 98: 1-6

A prayer to welcome God’s rule over the earth

Sing a new song to the LORD,

for he has done marvelous deeds. His right hand and holy arm

have won the victory.

The LORD has made his victory known;

has revealed his triumph

in the sight of the nations,

He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness

toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen

the victory of our God.

Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth;

break into song; sing praise. Sing praise to the LORD with the lyre,

with the lyre and melodious song.

Meditations From Pope Benedict XVI’s General Audience, April 13, 2011

Holiness, the fullness of Christian life, does not consist in carrying out extraordinary enterprises but in being united with Christ, in living his mysteries, in making our own his example, his thoughts, his behavior. The measure of holiness stems from the stature that Christ achieves in us, in as much as with the power of the Holy Spirit, we model our whole life on his. … What is the soul of holiness? … What is the essential? The essential means never leaving a Sunday without an encounter with the Risen Christ in the Eucharist; this is not an additional burden but is light for the whole week. It means never beginning and never ending a day without at least a brief contact with God. And, on the path of our life it means following the “signposts” that God has communicated to us in the Ten Com-mandments, interpreted with Christ, which are merely the explanation of what love is in specific situations. … We might ask ourselves: can we, with our limitations, with our weaknesses, aim so high? During the Liturgi-cal Year, the Church invites us to commemorate a host of saints, the ones, that is, who lived charity to the full, who knew how to love and follow Christ in their daily lives. They tell us that it is possible for everyone to take this road. … I would like to ask all to open themselves to the action of the Holy Spirit, who transforms our life, to be, we too, as small pieces in the great mosaic of holiness that God continues to create in history, so that the face of Christ may shine out in the fullness of its splendor. Let us not be afraid to aim high, for God’s heights.

What is holiness?

How can we live holiness in the family? How do we love God in the ordinary circumstances of life?

How do the saints help us live out holiness?

A Family Prayer Composed by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation of love. In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit. Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live. May our family always be a place of generosity, understanding, forgiveness and joy. Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be wit-nesses to your eternal design for the family; and grant that the Holy Family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
