It’s hard to believe the school year is half over, but we had an amazing first half of the year. Our students have been experiencing many wonderful activities in their core classes and academy classes. The Florida Department of Education has released simulated school grades based on the proposed cut scores for the FY 2015 FSA. If the state approves the cut scores in January, Jupiter Middle School will once again be an “A” rated school. Our continued “A” rating is the result of our teachers, students and parental support. Our teachers are also having a great year. Our Dwyer nominees are Mrs. Capparelli, Mr. Black and Mrs. Donnie Quigley. Our Teacher of the Year nominee is Ms. Brenda Joyce and our Counselor of the Year nominee is Mrs. Jan Aurand. I am honored to work with such fabulous teachers. Our 8th grade students will be taking the PSAT 8/9 assessment. There are many benefits for our students. It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter high school and begin preparing for college and career readiness. It also provides students with better access to data and personalized study through the online College Board and Khan Academy® resources. I’d like to thank JTAA and Revolutions Cycle for their generous donations towards our new score board. Our athletic teams and coaches are so excited about the new score board. Here’s to a great second half of the school year. Sincerely, Dr. Iannitti Principals Pen

Dear Jupiter Middle Families,

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe the school year is half over, but we had an amazing first half of the year. Our students have been experiencing many wonderful activities in their core classes and

2pg.JMST Grief Support Group

The JMST guidance department is trying to establish a grief and loss support group for students who have lost a loved one. If you want your child to participate in this Hospice directed program, please contact the guidance office by e-mailing any of the three listed [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected].

Treehuggers The Treehuggers Club Gardens are in full bloom. The Hydroponic Tower Garden is blooming with different types of lettuce, herbs, and eggplant on its way. This is a fast system

that gives you amazing food in less than a month. In our traditional garden, we planted tomatoes, jalapeños, and kale. We can’t wait to make salsa and kale chips. We are starting our Equal Exchange Organic & Fair Trade fundraiser which helps support our garden and green school efforts. Please support us by buying some delicious chocolate, tea, coffee, or gift items at the Honor Roll Grade Level Breakfasts in January. Our club meets Wednesday mornings at 8:15 in Mrs. Zern’s room. New members are always welcome.

Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It is commonly known that regular exercise is a wonderful way to improve physical fitness, fight against obesity, diabetes and heart disease. But a new study shows that regular exercise is also a good way to improve children’s brain function which may lead to better academic success. The CDC guidelines suggest that school age students participate in at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. Participation in sports or a formal exercise program is one way to keep fit. However, the three types of recommended physical activity can be met through many different types of play. For example, climbing on a jungle gym or a tree builds muscle strength. Playing tag is a great aerobic activity and bone strengthening can occur by jumping rope or playing hopscotch. Make it fun! For more information visit www.hcdpbc.org/schoolhealth.

Over one hundred students participated in this fundraiser. The evening began with the students enjoying our school’s production of “Little Mermaid, Jr.” There was a DJ who played popular hits. Cheese pizza was available for dinner. Beach ball, dodge ball and other activities were enjoyed. Students were supposed to stay awake all night, though some dozed off during the movie. The students are 6th graders Katelyn Murphy, Lauren Klein and William Bates; 7th graders Amber Yelvington, Blythe Vasquez, Carly Green, Darcy Gannelli, Litsi Castillo-Garcia, Mary Brown, and Rachel Bulyar; 8th graders Brooke Shainman and Jorge Gil. There was a reception on December 10th to honor these artists and their families. The art will be on display until January 13th. Congrats to our amazing Mariner Artists.

Amazing Artists Five art students from JMS will have a piece of art displayed in Representative Magar’s District 82 office in the Florida Capitol Building. The selected art will hang in the Tallahassee office during the 2016 Legislative Session. After the Legislative Session is over, the pieces will be returned to the students, framed, and with a Certificate of Appreciation. The students are: 6th graders, Felipe Obando; 7th graders - Ashley Baijnauth and Carly Green, 8th graders - Johanna Bruk and Samuel Goodman. Congratulations Art Students!!

Arti Gras Artists Three students are being considered to have their art work on display at the 2016 ArtiGras held President’s Day weekend. If chosen, their art work will be on display in the student art section of Arti Gras. The students being considered are: 6th grader Gavin Cairo, 7th grader David Ramirez-Vail, and 8th grader Adele Kimball. Good luck art students.

Chalk Drawing There is a new club which has just started. Any student who is interested in art and likes drawing in chalk are encouraged to attend. As of now, there are about a dozen students who are learning how to grid the area prior to drawing. This method helps the artist transfer the picture onto the pavement. The finished products are amazing! Any interested students should see Ms. Flaigg for more information.

5pg.Little Mermaid Jr.

Jupiter Middle School presented the Little Mermaid Jr. on November 23rd and 24th, just prior to the Thanksgiving break. The show commanded attention through the vibrant colors of the underwater creatures. In spectacular fashion, the cast sang and danced their way into the hearts of the audience one song at a time. The three directors, Donnie Quigley, Kathy Powell, and Johnnie Butler, were glowing with pride after receiving multiple compliments about the advanced quality of the show and the star power of the cast. Jade Huber wowed the audience with her vocal range. Her acting skills made everyone fall in love with Ariel. Kat Walker was a fearsome Ursula, who made everyone tremble in her wake. Anthony Hernandez took on the boisterous role of Sebastian with ease. He delivered each witty line with perfect comedic timing. Ariel needed plenty of help throughout her adventure and Flounder, played by Ashley McCallum, and Scuttle, who was Haley Fekete, were always there to lend a fin or wing. How can we not mention Prince Eric played by Ryan Brashear? He was brave and charming just as a prince should be. The cast had many strong supporting characters from Grimsby to the mersisters - each student taking on his or her character with mastery and transporting the audience under the sea. The chorus was the backbone of the whole performance and of course the show could not have gone one without the support of the backstage crew. With so many talented young performers, I am sure we have many wonderful productions to look forward to in the future!

Dance Club Dance Club wrapped up its fall session on December 8th. The girls had a blast learning how to “Whip and Nae Nae”, “Wiggle”, and how to “Belly Dance”. We also found the time to choreograph a jazz routine which incorporated newly learned jazz moves. It’s never too late to join the club. If you would like to join; please print a permission form and have a parent or guardian sign it. Turn the form into Ms. Previte prior to attending your first meeting. Please listen to WJMS and check the Edline Dance Club page for the Spring Club dates. We hope to see you this spring.

Chess Club It’s never too late to learn how to play chess - the most popular game in the world! The goal of the game is to checkmate the other player’s king. Checkmate happens when the king is in a position to be captured (in check) and cannot escape from capture. If you are totally new to the game or want to learn all of the rules and strategies, join us Tuesday mornings at 8:15 A.M. Come to Mr. Lauer’s room, 510 to play chess and see if you can capture your opponent’s king.

Master Chef JuniorWritten by Jade Lichtenstein

As steam rises from burning flames, five seconds are left on the clock! Pressure and heat rises from all contestants as they battle it out for the “Winner of Master Chef Junior.” Master Chef Junior is a reality cooking show were children from ages from 8 to 13 make food to be judged by Gordan Ramsey. Although all the contestants are very talented, the two strongest contestants this season are 8 year old Kya, and 9 year old Addison from Chicago. First and foremost, Kya has a good skillset. Her strongest point is cooking Asian. She executes incredible dishes at such a young age. Kya uses unusual techniques most kids don’t know about and this makes her food taste amazing! Also, Kya had won many challenges. She won the first mystery box challenge of the season, amongst many other kids that had much more experience than her. The judges are always confident in her and know she can deliver food with high standards. Another contestant who could win the title is Addison. Addison is very bold and puts food on a plate that she has never used before. You might think this is absolutely crazy, but all of her food has been either perfect or qualifying based on the judges’ standards. She whips up exotic recipes in her head, in a matter of five minutes. She knows what tastes work, without ever having to try it. Although Kya and Addison are my front runners, they have several set-backs. Kya may cook too much Asian food, and not show enough range to be a Master Chef Jr. Addison takes risks with her food, which could backfire if her dish doesn’t go as planned. However, all three judges believe in both of them and will give them opportunities to showcase the range of their talents. In conclusion, Kya and Addison would be my top two contenders. Their confidence, risk taking attitude, and experience will take them very far in the kitchen! Who will win? Watch the show to find out!

7pg. Happy Holidays, dear readers! The Music Department has been so busy since the last newsletter that this article has a ghostwriter! Okay, it’s Dr. Goffe - retired, but not totally gone! So here is what Ms. Leland, Mr. Destito, and the students of the Music Department have been accomplishing. November was a very busy month for the music department. Caleb Petranchuk and Luca Downey were selected for the Florida ACDA Male Honor Choir, held in Lake Mary on November 6th - 7th. They auditioned and were chosen to join other outstanding male singers throughout Florida to perform at the State Choral Directors’ Convention. In more chorus news, a record-setting number of students were selected for the 2016 All-State Chorus. The All-state Chorus is chosen from a pool of over 5,000 applicants across Florida. After a rigorous audition process, the selected students (300 in each All-State ensemble) travel to Tampa January 13 - 16, 2016. The students rehearse and perform under the direction of a conductor of international reputation, and then perform for an entire assembly of Florida’s music teachers, parents, political leaders, and friends. Congratulations to Gabriella Venanzi, Kylee Cobleigh, Emily Centi, Jade Huber, Michaela Avedisian, Grace Owosina, and Caleb Petranchuk. If you are counting, yes, that is SEVEN members of the All-State Chorus! Selected to the All-State Honors Orchestra, William Penn will also represent Jupiter Middle School playing the bass. Way to go, William! In addition to the above accomplishments of individual music students, the JMST performing ensembles were out in full force with their annual Veterans Day Concert on November 10. Beginning Chorus, Mariner Singers, Wind Ensemble, and Mariner Symphony presented a moving program of the story and songs to remember and honor our veterans, both past and present. Later in the month (November 19), the Mariner Symphony participated in a day of side by side rehearsal with members of the symphony from U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School of the Arts.

Music UpdateSubmitted by Dr. Jerri Goffe on behalf of the JMST Music Department

The month of December brought more than a two week period of public performances by the musicians of JMST! Check out all the times these wonderful kids were heard singing or playing somewhere in Jupiter!• 12/2 - Members of the JMS Music Department (Orchestra, Band, Chorus) at

Barnes & Noble Book Fair• 12/8 - Beginning Band, Beginning Chorus, Mariner Singers Concert• 12/9 - Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band Concert• 12/11 - Members of the JMS Choruses all-day tour to nursing homes and hospitals• 12/13 - JMST Band in the Jupiter Holiday Parade• 12/15 - Beginning Strings, Mariner Symphony, Harp Ensemble Concert

So what is on the calendar for the New Year? • 1/30 - Orchestra Solo/Ensemble Music Performance Assessment• 2/5-6 - Band Solo/Ensemble Music Performance Assessment• 2/12-13 - Chorus Solo/Ensemble Music Performance Assessment

The orchestra is excited to announce its partnership with the Palm Beach Symphony. Throughout January and February the orchestra students will benefit from a series of master classes with the professional musicians of the Palm Beach Symphony. The music department is also receiving some funding for music and artists-in-residence, provided by the Palm Beach Symphony. A wonderful learning experience for the orchestra students, this innovative partnering program is new to Jupiter Middle School, but has already enjoyed success in other schools. These events provide students with the opportunities to perform as soloists and in small ensembles. In March, similar events to evaluate the large ensembles will be held. All performances are judged utilizing a strict rubric of performance expectations and standards. Want to know more?Contact your amazing music teachers at JMS:• Ashley E. As always, the Music Department wishes to thank all of its supporters, sponsors, parents, volunteers, teachers, administrators, and friends. Without your generous support, and gifts of time, talent, money, etc. we could never accomplish our goals to provide opportunities for students to participate in and enjoy all of the benefits of a quality music education! Happy New Year!

2015 Mariner Volleyball The Lady Mariner Volleyball team is off to a fast start with a convincing victory over Howell Watkins and a thrilling 3 set victory over division rival Independence Middle. Leading the charge for the Mariners is eighth-grader outside hitter Hannah Heide and setters Anna Andel and Maddie Eagen. Seventh-graders Kaysa Flemk-Joli, MJ Whitaker, and Mia Delaney solidify a strong starting rotation. The team has also gotten a nice lift with two sixth grade starters Ally Bauer and Courtney Capar. Julia Teri, Madeline Shanz, Abby Moretto, and Mackenzie Gale are all talented players coming off the bench for the Mariners. The girls look to defend a County Championship won last season by the 2014 team. The future is looking bright for Jupiter Mariner volleyball! Coach Costello and his ladies are doing a great job representing our school. Way to go!

2015 JMST Boys’ Soccer Midway through the season the boys’ soccer team has displayed some excellent talent. The team currently sits in 2nd place in the division with a 3-1-1 record. The team is led by Captains Christian Hyland, Chris Radice and Troy Faminial. With their leadership the team has developed a fierce competitive attitude not only on the field, but also in the classroom. Eighth grader Max Bello has displayed superb academic skills as his GPA is the highest on the squad. As the season has progressed the team has been praised by coaches and spectators alike. The boys are in the top 5 in the county in goals scored (12). Also the defense ranks in the top 5, only allowing 5 goals this season. As the team embarks on their stretch run, all preseason goals are still in play and obtainable. With great leadership on and off the field the boys’ soccer team looks forward to a strong finish and a berth in the playoffs at the beginning of the New Year! Coach Hawkins and his team are to be commended.

Girls on the Run Girls on the Run finished their 16 week season on December 8th with a fun and meaningful activity intended to involve everyone in the Jupiter Middle School Family. The girls were discussing all they had learned this season and wanted to share positive pocket messages with the rest of the school. They made display signs and posted them all along the car line in front of school at their final meeting. They wrote and designed the displays themselves. We hope those who read them had a positive feeling, and even felt a little inspiration from the girls! Also, the girls completed their 5K run on November 4th with great results. Please visit the website for girls on the Run for more information. Coach Nouis and Coach Wienke
