Hornet Athletics

Basketball season has come to a

close with valiant efforts from our young

men and women’s programs. Our ladies

dropped a close one in the first round of

the district tournament despite efforts from

our savvy seniors. Our boys pulled off an

impressive win with an upset of Mackinaw

City in the District semi’s. The boys took

their game to the District Final with

Alanson before bringing their season to an

end. They fought a tightly contested game

for almost the entire game before a tough

stretch in the second half cost them.

We would like to take the

opportunity to recognize the efforts of our

players as they represented our school in

a very positive light. Despite how things

ended, we couldn’t be prouder of how you

performed sporting the Brown and Gold.

We commend our seniors for their

leadership and resilience . . . recognizing

that athletics can be very challenging at

times. Your ability to demonstrate

character and integrity in those tough

times is greatly appreciated.

Coming into an early spring, we as an administrative staff have been very proud of our students and their growth as young men and women. I would like to personally highlight the student group “Project Unify” for their efforts in raising awareness of bullying in school. Project Unify has made anti-bullying shirts for staff and students to wear on days selected by the group. Seeing our students band together and spread awareness of such an important issue is something special to see. They are proud of what they are doing and I know as a staff we are very proud of these actions as well.

Project Unify also brought in a guest speaker to speak to the school about bullying and pursuing your dreams. Former Michigan State basketball player, Anthony Ianni, came in and did a wonderful job talking to our students about what he had gone though as a kid in school and the struggles he had to overcome in order to beat the odds. Anthony was a powerful speaker that I feel grasped the attention of the students from the minute he started talking.

Little by little we can we can develop our kids into well-rounded adults. When we have the help of students leading students, it shows the character of these kids and shows us what we can expect out of them in years to come. The future is bright at Pellston Public Schools and it’s great to be a part of it!

Project Unify

Project Unify is a Special Olympics created program that seeks to create athletic and leadership opportunities for students with and without disabilities. This program is designed specifically to promote community involvement and awareness amongst those that participate. Under the leadership of Mr. Powell and Mrs. Wagar, Project Unify has provided multiple field trips including Laser Tag as well as guest Speaker, Anthony Ianni, former Michigan State basketball player and motivational speaker. testing for the spring. I am concerned with our

students being prepared for the rigors of this year’s

SAT/PSAT/M-STEP exams. Our staff have been working very

hard to expose students to the sorts of things that will be

asked of them. The unfortunate thing with the SAT/PSAT is

where it falls in the testing window . . . April 12. Not exactly

an ideal time to test, we are preparing to have our students

testing upon arrival back from Spring Break. Please ensure

that your students get ample sleep and are back to school for

April 12. These tests are used to measure the success of our

school and it is essential that all students be in attendance.

These tests mean a great deal to our school and we ask for

your support in this endeavor.

As the fourth quarter quickly approaches, students stay atop

your studies. It is essential that you earn credit for your

classes and avoid the pitfalls of credit recovery. I might

remind students and parents that normally this is the time of

year when we see a spike in behavior and disciplinary action.

Remember the Full Value Agreement and the principles set

forth for students and staff . . . Teamwork, Be Safe, and Speak

Up. Know them, honor them, and live them. If you can abide

by these, I know it will be a good spring for everybody.

As we near conferences, please introduce yourselves to Mr.

Collin Hewitt. He is a new addition to our staff and is offering

tutoring and math 6 for our

students. Please help to

Mr. Ianni presented to our students March 11 and emphasized many character traits that would positively impact student success in life. He focus on the topic of respect and stressed to our students the importance of leaning on those that would be willing to teach you, nurture, and help you. Mr. Ianni spoke a moving message from the heart . . . you see, he wasn’t suppose to be successful in his life. His parents were informed that he had a degenerative form of Autism and that he would never be a good student or athlete. He was the only player in history to graduate from D-1 having Autism. He proved that you can if you exercise respect and Live your Dreams!

As the third quarter comes to a close we are preparing for the spring activities including the annual state mandated testing for all middle and high school students grades 6 through 11 and getting seniors ready for their post-secondary pathways.

Counselor’s Notes

Testing and spring break are dangerously close this year! All of the testing we administer is mandated by the State of Michigan and therefore has certain days that they need to be completed on. Grades 5, 8, 9, 10, and 11 all have testing that starts immediately following spring break. We ask that as you plan your spring vacations to please take the testing schedule into consideration and not extend your vacations further into April.

Grades 3 - 8, and 11: As we did last spring, we will give the M-STEP to grades 3 through 8 and 11. The window for M-STEP testing varies for each grade. The main testing windows for each grade are as follows: Grades 5 and 8 English Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies: April 12 - April 21

Grades 3 and 6 English Language Arts and Math: between April 26 and May 5

Grades 4 and 7 English Language Arts, Math, and Science: between May 10 and May 19

Grade 11 Science and Social Studies: April 14

New this year for grades 9 and 10: Freshman and Sophomores should plan on taking a version of the PSAT. Sophomores will test on TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 2016. Freshmen will test on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2016. Please note that this is right after we return from spring break. 9th graders will take the PSAT8/9 and 10th graders will be taking the PSAT10. These tests take the place of the ACT Plan and Explore we gave in the past.

New this year for grade 11: Juniors took the ACT in previous years, but this year the state is mandating that students take the SAT. The juniors will take the SAT on TUESDAY, APRIL 12, ACT WorkKeys on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13 and M-STEP science and social studies on THURSDAY, APRIL 14. Please note that testing begins the day we return from spring break. We cannot stress enough the importance of our juniors being present on this day.

SENIOR CHECKLIST SPRING 2016

Continue to inquire about scholarships - Scholarship opportunities are posted on the school website under the “Guidance Counseling” section and is also available on Mrs. Dilworth’s Google Classroom Counseling page.

Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): Available after January 1, 2016. Filling out the FAFSA early guarantees that you get the maximum amount available to you. Please contact the office if you need to set up an appointment.

Complete High School graduation requirements - Make sure you pass your required courses! Attending college in the fall? Keep your grades up! Most colleges and universities ask for your final transcript to see if you kept up the good work!

Last day for seniors that have satisfied their graduation requirements will be May 26. Those seniors still requiring time to complete coursework will attend school until they have done so. Deadline for all submissions will be June 2, 2016 at 3:10 PM.
